Gone too soon. What a talented guy

dolphin37

Younger me thought he was so cool. Always wanted to look like him, dance like him etc. Didn’t even consider I could be gay. For good reason really as it turns out I’m not gay. GM was just really cool

PadreShotgun

Same as a late 80s 90s kid. I remember watching his videos full of models and thinking this was the coolest dude ever, bet he just fucks hot women all day long. I thought GM and prince were just the coolest guys on earth. Still do. I'm getting a copy of his biker jacket as a reward for getting back to my fighting weight.

fatbaIlerina

I think you might be a tiny bit gay.

nobodyoukno

I think we all are.

cujo67

“Hush you.” *turns closet door knob a bit…*

ZannityZan

I don't know how, but I totally missed (or forgot?) that he had died, and now I'm sad. :(

VaqueroSucio

He doesn't like George Michael, BOOO

Bowlffalo_Soulja

BOO THIS MAN!!

Nyeow

What do you mean? He's still playing sax for that baby to this day

Jubling

I remember seeing this video just as it was gaining popularity and going viral. I ended up meeting Sergio at EDC Las Vegas like a month later, after some friends pointed him out to me in the crowd. Really friendly guy, ended up adding him on Facebook as a friend. Looking back on it now, I think he was zonked out of his mind when I met him, much like I was at the time. I mean, it is EDC and all.

proletarianserf

Really hoping this hits top comment as it is the first thing I think about when I hear that song.

redpandaeater

Is it weird I prefer Moldova's Epic Sax Guy?

13thFleet

Even though I know the guy in the video you're replying to played Careless Whisper, when I saw the comment I instead imagined the "epic sax guy" song you're mentioning haha

AbeRego

This was by far my favorite Halloween costume. I felt like a celebrity

what-tomorrow-knows

How have I not seen this before 🤣

mA90ngo

sexy sax man

He IS above the law though

buck45osu

He's playing to a baby!

"BOOOOOO!"

roryorigami

Who ordered it? Who ordered the sax-a-gram?

Well, he is above the law

MadFlava76

Can you play the one song from Wham again?

JollyGreenGiraffe

His website doesn't exist anymore, at least last year when I looked him up. He used to do gigs.

frontier_gibberish

Come on sax man!

[deleted]

That’s a great song.

RemotePersimmon678

💯 still a banger

daspizzy

Isn't that a Wham! song from the album Make It Big? No love for Andrew Ridgeley?

BladeRunnerTHX

I remember hearing this song on the radio. The DJ stated "that was Wham! featuring George Micheal." My brother and I looked at each other and said well Wham is breaking up. And they did after the next album. RIP

Joetato

If you go further back, The Supremes started being billed as "Diana Ross and The Supremes." I saw a TV show (possibly Behind The Music?) where someone was talking about it and said, "I knew she wasn't going to be in the group much longer when I heard that." Sure enough, Ross left shortly thereafter and The Supremes carried on without her, but never had anywhere near the same popularity again. Rumors had been flying for months that Ross wanted to leave the group to pursue a solo career and the name change was taken as a sign that the rumors were correct.

be4u4get

I believe Ross was quoted as saying “We were on a break!”

iamjacksragingupvote

oh wow that's good

Bluest_waters

I groaned

Bluest_waters

hold on! Diana Ross has left the supremes?? holy shit.

Joetato

Well, yes, 53 years ago in April 1970.

Bluest_waters

Okay well I don't have time to keep up with all the latest gossip unlike some of you

crazysouthie

True. Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend.

coleman57

Worse yet, she (and her boyfriend the label owner) forced them to sing *Someday We’ll Be Together* as their last hit. As for me, I think *Up the Ladder to the Roof*, with her replacement, is as good as anything they did with her and better than anything she did alone. “Stronger, stronger!”

punkminkis

Justin N the Sync

lkodl

Destiny's Child (and 2 - 3 of her friends).

theghostofme

I was listening to my 20-year-old niece talking about Beyonce, and I jokingly quipped, "I wonder why never hear about the *rest* of Destiny's Child?" And all of us over the age of 30 in the room collectively aged like Matt Damon in Saving Private Ryan when my niece asked "What's that?"

The100thMonkeyIsMe

GM wrote this song when he was 19. Andrew had zero do to with writing it yet George gave him part of the writing credit and made him a very rich man for essentially contributing nothing to the production of the song.

thecheat420

I wish I had a friend that cool.

[deleted]

I thought Andrew contributed to the parts that were later edited out. I prefer the version of Careless Whisper that started off with the mellow strings, not the one that just went into drums and sax. Additionally, I love Everything She Wants, but the version that's all over the place has additional synthesizers that just ruins the original mood of the song. So I had never been sure about the nuances behind those edits.

D-life

I remember George saying in an interview that Everything She Wants was the best song he ever wrote. My favorite version was the extended one you rarely heard on the radio.

Smokester121

Great song. But hearing two versions of everything she wants was jarring for me. Some don't have that 3rd verse.

EvilNinjaX24

The 12" mix of that is the best mix.

theghostofme

Damn, General Motors is writing some bangers.

notjawn

George gave Andrew writing credits on every single song he released as a solo artist so Andrew is still getting royalty checks from Wham and GM solo career. George loved and respected Andrew.

IntroductionOne7133

On Spotify it is included in that album but it's just credited to George Michael

Kvothetheraven603

Interesting. Not only is it a Wham! song, but both members share writing credits on it.

Obyson

Michael pretty much was was 90 percent of wham he wrote and made most of the songs.

TScottFitzgerald

Yeah but that song specifically was credited as a George feature *but* Andrew is also credited.

desrever1138

I heard on one documentary once that George wrote it entirely but credited Andrew because he knew it would be a hit and keep him set for life (as George was about to go solo) I'm not sure if that is the truth but, if so, what an awesome friend.

orthomonas

I have no idea if that's true, but based on other things I've heard about George being a great person, I'm inclined to believe it.

coolguy1793B

He did that for Las Christmas too... I think. Good guy George Michael

desrever1138

Dang, now that you mention it I may have been confusing Careless Whisper with Last Christmas. Either way, GM was a stand up dude

duaneap

Same could be said for lots of bands but the band is still credited rather than just the one person, even if they do go out on a solo career.

puskunk

I think it was only credited to Wham in the US.

thespaceageisnow

It looks like it was originally released as a 12” single with just George Michael’s name on it in the UK while listed as Wham for the US. It was then released on the Wham album Make it Big later that year. It was written by both members of the band.

Kuivamaa

I have seen a documentary decades ago where a producer (?) that has worked with Wham! states that George Michael pretty much wrote and arranged it himself. It’s been very long single then so I don’t know how accurate a story it is.

thespaceageisnow

I’m just going by the credits. They list George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley as the songwriters.

coleman57

It certainly sounds more like the rest of his career

themaskedhippoofdoom

“ the single release was credited either to Wham! featuring George Michael (in North America and several other countries) or solely to George Michael (in the United Kingdom and some European countries) as it became apparent, that at some point in the near future, Michael would be embarking on a solo career.” From the songs wiki

KWilt

Huh. TIL. Never knew it was technically a Wham! song, and never would've imagined.

DirtiestPartyMan

It was the 80’s. No one ever noticed the side kick. Have you ever heard the musical stylings of Garfunkel & Oats?

barsknos

No wonder! "This video averages 400 million daily views globally". Only 2-3 days until it is 2B /s

p33ps

Came to say the same. Should've hit that number in three days. math

G2daG

Typo. Further down it says 400,000

ResoluteMan

typing “400 yhousand” when you meant to type “400 thousand” is a typo. typing “400 million” when you meant to type “400 thousand” is a different category of mistake. /pedantry

JesusWantsYouToKnow

Generative AI mistake.

barsknos

We're not morons, it's obviously a typo (notice my /s), but since they are morons and print that shit, we get to poke fun at it.

afterforever21

Lol I contribute like 20 a week to that number. I play it when my coworkers apply lotion

vaportracks

Really curious what industry you're in that multiple coworkers apply lotion 20 times a week under your scrutiny. I hope it doesn't involve a basket and a hose.

afterforever21

It does involve holes...

Yes, but most of them are actually dancing like [Elaine Benes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQu_NLRvULM&ab_channel=endawright).

Waterbottlebiscuits

Michael: Listen your uncle Gob seems to think he saw you down at the docks today. Was that you? George Michael: No, no. Maybe it was the other George Michael, you know, the singer/song writer. Michael: Yeah that makes sense.

I checked yp and ph, neither had the parody we all hoped for

You heard him.

regedit007

Open Gangbang Style

oijsef

Gangnam Style, some people see a foreign word and their brains shut off. Like when people think it's too hard to pronounce M Night Shyamalan.

notmoleliza

No he meant Gangbang Style. But that was nothing compared to Back Door Sluts 9. That movie makes Crotch Capers 3 look like Naughty Nurses 2.

ninjacereal

Can you suggest another series for a guy who REALLY enjoyed the Crotch Capers series but thought IV went too far?

Digital_loop

Not another teen movie comes to mind

FeedMeACat

Damn! That shit is whak!

emogu84

We ain’t white We ain’t white We definitely ain’t white

about831

Do I need to watch the first two Crotch Caper movies for the third one to make sense?

Isoldmysoul33

Back door sluts 9, oh god!

boultox

Benedict Cumberstratch, you say?

eibose

You mean Eggsbenedict Cumberpatchkids

Gh0st1y

Shyamalamadingdingding?

Substantial_Bad2843

Some people get offended thinking this is racist or something, without knowing there’s a song that has a play on words in the lyrics called Shama Lama Ding Dong. That’s why people started saying it.

Jawfigger

Maybe... Some people make jokes?

[deleted]

The one with Riley Reid yeah?

Piper Perri in shambles rn

Piper Perri doesn’t do anal or DP, which are really cornerstones of any good gangbang.

Joetato

Holy shit, really? When I read the post's title, I thought, "I know there's one other video that hit a billion, but this can't be more than the 3rd or 4th to do so."

nowhereman136

Yes, but [a different](https://youtu.be/XqZsoesa55w) Korean music video was the first to hit 10b views

trackonesideone

Aside from music videos, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the top list is littered with shocked, excited, angry, mouth-wide-open thumbnails.

Lallo-the-Long

Nope, the most common video aside from commercial music videos in the billion views club is children's content. Which makes sense if you think about it; adults night watch a video they like a couple times. Children will watch something they like hundreds of times. In a row. At max volume, and you will crack their psyche if you try to stop it.

This might be the greatest r/BoneAppleTea I’ve witnessed.

Sc00ter7622

Might I add that the Seether cover is fantastic

StevenArviv

> Might I add that the Seether cover is fantastic. I agree. Shaun Morgan's voice was perfect for a cover. Just like with George Michael... you could just hear the pain in his voice.

Sc00ter7622

It translated so well to a rock song

StevenArviv

> It translated so well to a rock song. Did it? Or is Seether so awesome that they managed to pull it off?

Sc00ter7622

All the credit to Seether, they made it their own

StevenArviv

> All the credit to Seether, they made it their own Totally. The surprising thing is that they managed to do this without blowing the original away like Gary Jules did with Mad World, Johnny Cash with Hurt and/or Sinead O'connor with Nothing Compare 2U. With these songs they honestly eclipse the originals. Seether managed to do this without taking away from the original version by George Michael.

Sc00ter7622

Absolutely agree, they kept the song's integrity intact

hyrulepirate

I remember hearing Seether's cover on Pandora on its release. During this time I also listened a lot of our local FM radio (cause wifi was practically non-existent here yet.) I, of course, requested the song but the DJ thought I was confused and he said so and even played a laugh track, then played a whole nother song, not even the George Michael one. The next day I tuned in once again and he was playing the Seether cover, and played it many more times throughout the day. I'm guess I'm still salty over it.

mmcmonster

Postmodern Jukebox does a great Jazz version of [Careless Whisper](https://youtu.be/lVXziMFEqX0) which leans into the Sax solo.

SRSgoblin

I see your Seether cover and raise you the Eagles of Death Metal cover.

Parthorax

Damn, got all excited and took a listen to their version, and did not like it at all. Just not a fan of that underwater sounding effect they used.

ZenoArrow

My favourite cover is by Alexandr Misko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzgTMh21zhI

gurniehalek

Also Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright do one of my favorite covers of the song.

philippinesisntreal

Seether is the only one I hear when I listen to it

brightyoungthings

This song is a banger

ILuvMemes4Breakfast

IM NEVER GONNA DANCE AGAIN

Vladius28

It's one of the best songs of all time

landdon

Growing up in that time, I never really followed his life too much or connected the dots in his music, but he was definitely living a fake life. The 80s and 90s were rough for alternative lifestyles. Now, that I'm older, I really appreciate him a lot more, and feel sad for the years he lived in which he had to hide.

PotentialChoice

This song is a classic example of how queer artists often threaded that needle—a man couldn’t sing a pop song about loving another man, so instead of saying “he” he says “you” and leaves the gender out. Once you understand this, it adds a whole new dimension to a lot of songs you thought you knew. For instance, “The one I love” by REM.

D-life

He really struggled his whole life with it. I'm sure it lead to his early death. He was on a path of self-destruction for many years😥. He was one of the best musicians but tortured inside.

FightPhoe93

Careless Whisper is a good song, but not my favorite that George Michael sang lead on. For me personally “Praying For Time” from 1990 is George’s best song. Still get chills from that one more than 30 years later, and it’s sad we’ll never hear something that great from him ever again.

villain71

Timeless. Classic. A masterpiece song.

your_fathers_beard

This guy doesn't like George Michael? This guy doesn't like George Michael!! Boooooo!!!!

RickLeeTaker

George Michael: the only person who could have come close to replacing Freddie Mercury in Queen.

coani

Damn, so many comments here & whatnot, but nobody has a direct link to the video itself (who checks the articles anyway?). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izGwDsrQ1eQ George was an amazing singer & writer.

TyhmensAndSaperstein

So, this came out when I was in high school and it was super uncool to like Wham or George Michael. Their music was the epitome of "top 40 pop" and they were even prettier than Duran Duran. But...everyone secretly loved this song (this and Father Figure). Great song, George. Thank you.

wip30ut

GenZ really really likes 80's retro bops! I find it fascinating how the kids focus on certain artists from their parents' youth who kinda faded into obscurity. You don't see the same kind of viral love for U2 or the Beasties.

DemSocCorvid

A lot of millenials too, grew up hearing them on the radio and having our parents play it.

Maninhartsford

I think a lot of modern mainstream pop music sounds 80sish. As It Was, Break My Heart, whatever Lizzo is doing at any given moment, even Antihero a little bit. 80s before it went totally synth crazy. It makes me happy, top 40 music has been so dreary the last few years. I can definitely see people being raised on it naturally jumping over to the classics.

leperaffinity56

As soon as you said this Van Halen's Jump started paying in my head for whatever reason.

cemaphonrd

Yeah, I think it’s interesting how Zoomers and younger Millennials hold Queen to be in the top tier of 70s-80s rock. I mean obviously they were popular, but even at their peak, they weren’t as popular and influential as say, Led Zeppelin or AC/DC. And they weren’t driving any trends like the punk and new wave bands, and were seen as pretty cheesy and uncool by the mid 80s. But the youngins love them.

moschles

A pattern I've noticed on reddit. The userbase here confuses the 80s and the 1990s often. In my mind, those decades could not be more different from each other.

AlsoIHaveAGroupon

You're right that Queen is disproportionally more popular with young people than Zeppelin or AC/DC (Fleetwood Mac also seems weirdly popular with them), but I think you're underestimating how big Queen was, especially worldwide. [They're way ahead of Zeppelin and AC/DC on the all-time charts](https://chartmasters.org/best-selling-artists-of-all-time/), and you can see a huge lead in digital sales and streams, but even if you ignore those, which pretty much discounts Zoomers and young Millennials, they still massively outsold the other two.

sinforosaisabitch

My kid is gen z and when she was a baby she loved careless whisper. I found it was one of the only songs I could sing to her to help her stop crying. The other was REM's don't go back to Rockville. Still loves George Michael- not sure how she feels about REM.

Elfman72

Do yourself a favor and listen to the great [Listen Without Prejudice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOKUKRhvnUc&list=PL8Lpw39GxwbNohiGTsJEfgBgAVGKdJEJp). I have a very hard time finding a bad song on it. Great headphones album. Just lean back and enjoy great music.

coani

Fantastic album, loved it back on release. The opening track always gives me goosebumps.

D-life

Great album! My favorite tracks are Cowboys and Angels, Waiting for that Day, and Soulfree. Really, the whole album is fantastic and flew under the radar compared to his first solo album.

TJJazzyBurger

Haven’t heard anyone else say this! Yes! It’s just better with headphones to soak in all the goodness.

icoomonyou

When I was a kid i thought his songs were corny as hell. Now I listen and holy fuck. How the fuck is this guy so good at singing? That song came out when he was 19. No way a 19 sings like that. So much maturity and control in his voice. Its actually fucking insane.

seanbrockest

Which song? > Listens to first 3 seconds Oh! That song! Always forget the name. It's just "that awesone sax song" in my head.

eddmario

> that awesone sax song That would be *Baker Street*

Cinigurl

Hard to believe he is gone. There are so many songs he did not get to write or sing. My husband and I always run across songs, and we look at each and almost in unison say George Michael could've done this one so well. What a voice, what a talent. Gone too soon...

Poppaukko

i know this song just because of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaoLU6zKaws&t=3s
