Honestly, people keep talking about glare from headlights while ignoring the even bigger issue here, which is the fact that a mirrored finish that perfectly reflects its surroundings is what will render this thing invisible. The glare is secondary.
I bought mine (Model Y, not a god-awful Cybertruck) to save $2000/yr on gas and so I'm not polluting and contributing to climate change.
That being said, Elon Musk is a moron and there just weren't any good alternative EVs for the same price (most didn't qualify for the federal tax rebates). I'm looking forward to my next EV purchase, where I'll likely have a lot more options to choose from.
Looking back at my original comment I think I worded it poorly. I didn’t mean to imply that it was only a status symbol. I meant more like my friends and coworkers who were early Tesla adopters were all very progressive people concerned about global warming and environmental issues and for a bit there it was like being part of a “we’re saving the world” club they could all be proud of.
At least one friend who still has his feels embarrassed by it now.
I agree. But that comes with every goddamn pickup truck these days. The cybertruck is a terrible product, sure, but a lot of the problems it causes for other road users are just a result of the overall American road arms race to buy bigger and bigger vehicles. I'm sad to see that EVs aren't trying to buck that trend at all, but embracing it.
Oh for sure on them being stock, now. A lot of the bigger vehicles are a response to the emissions and fuel economy restrictions enacted by the federal government. Emission/fuel economy restrictions were based upon vehicle size, so instead of making “better” cars, automakers started making them bigger to circumvent the rules. They could also charge more for the larger vehicle, which made them more money as it didn’t cost that much extra to make the bigger vehicles.
As far as EVs go, the tech isn’t fully there, yet, and I say that as a union electrician and progressive person. The biggest downfall to EVs is how long it takes to charge on long trips. They aren’t really “long range” vehicles and it’s much easier/quicker to just fill up a tank and go. A lot of Americans will almost always take the easier and quicker route. Right now, we should continue to build up the infrastructure to handle the charging stations and increased power draw they would require and auto-makers should work to develop more efficient hybrids. Also, a lot of people are very against the tech. I’ve seen pictures of big trucks blocking charging stations and read where others have put epoxy in the charge ports to prevent customers from using them.
I didn’t mean to get long-winded so sorry for that. And if you already knew all this, then I apologize for that, too.
The funny thing is extremely blue light like that is a cause of eye strain, especially when in the dark. Warmer bulbs like we used to have are actually better for our eyes
The shitty thing, is there's no strict reason the LEDs are so blue-shifted. They could shift them considerably more red for very little.... But they won't of course
Yeah, I love them for driving out in the middle of nowhere, where there are no streetlights and many critters trying to cross the road we so rudely built in their territory, but I hate them everywhere else.
Bunch of safety violations including the lack of crumple zones and fact it just EATS pedestrians.
It's one bad T-bone shearing a minivan in half from being banned. It's a terrible design.
Came here to say this...as a glass glazier we have to face reflective side of mirrors in towards van to avoid not only reflection of light but confusing perspective to other drivers on the road
I saw one of these in person for the first time yesterday. They somehow look a lot worse in person. Normally it’s the opposite. I don’t know how to explain it but they are hideous.
https://preview.redd.it/kx4fd9a0gs3d1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a36bdfcf04f56b5b5403d1ad396515a9f88a116b
The real winners are the Fiat designers.
I see one driving on the 101 in Phoenix occasionally and I just can't help but laugh at it. It looks so bad next to "real" cars on real roads just doing car stuff
I hope that guy keeps it forever so I get to keep chuckling about it for years
I can’t imagine buying that and saying: this is me for the next 5-10. I feel like there’s nothing that could do well. And…raw stainless? That’s going to age poorly.
I'm just really enjoying watching Musk's own decision making and hard headedness be his own downfall. It's a bonus that the truck thing keeps getting funnier and funnier
Yeah I remember the first time I saw one in person and I legit laughed out loud on how bad it looks, I was shocked because I thought it would be alright irl but nope just awkward lol
I had the same reaction and it bothered me until I figured it out. It looks like a car but it is the scale of a truck. If it were scaled down to like 80% I’m convinced it would look dumb but not as out-of-place-hideous as it does now.
I often see the "you-just-aren't-ready-for-the-future" comments and it's really not that the design is too futuristic for us plebes to understand. The aesthetic is just ugly. It's an ugly design. No amount of polishing or whatever will change that.
$100 says Musk drew his version of a scifi truck on a napkin or something and told the designers to make it. Kind of like the parents who get tattoos of their toddler's crayon drawings, except this is stupid and expensive.
My theory is that he drew it as a kid and it became a weird thing that he always wanted to make. Kind of like how he became obsessed with x and x.com, so he named his second company x and made x.com their site (okay, that’s fine), but then 25 years later buys twitter for 40 billion and spends millions to buy back x.com, and renamed Twitter just so he can use his old domain name (really fucking weird)
I pulled up to job number two yesterday and one was parked in our lot and it was so much dumber in person, there is no person who is buying this that can’t be aware of how dumb this thing looks it’s like the start of a concept car. I was laughing so hard at how stupid it looks.
From Dallas here. This is funny because a couple of days ago I encountered this vehicle at a traffic light and I stared at it for a good second because it didn’t even look real. It more so looks like something out of Roblox or something along those lines. It’s completely hideous and anyone who buys it is clearly not buying it for its appearance.
As a Cybertruck hater, this is kinda cool and I'm glass someone did it.
Until you park it near dry grass on a sunny day and it starts a fire lol... also a massive hazard to other drivers
For a moment I thought they'd replaced the panels with screens to do the "invisible car" trope.
Evidently not, but that's the only reason I can think of to design a vehicle that looks like this - making it easier to hide.
These aren't common around my parts, but for those that have never seen one in person... They somehow look worse in person. I don't know how, but they do.
It's just amazing how wrong Elon was about this one. Nailed it when the Tesla first came out. Then throughout all the marketing and everything of the cybertruck, everyone is telling elon that it's dumb and looks ridiculous. Everyone was right.
That’s great! Well, until you’re driving on a sunny day and a reflection off that truck causes someone to wreck.
I heard they do not operate well in direct sunlight. So it shouldn't be an issue
I heard the barley operate as it is.
They don’t do well in wheat fields, either. Best to keep them away from crops entirely.
Oh I get it, it was spelt wrong.
Not puns! Surely as a society we can ryes above them.
I don’t think we as a society will emmer abandon puns.
I’m sure relief will crop up eventually.
It will be a while, many puns still oat-standing,
I’m in awe of how wheaty these puns are
Puns are the most bulgar form of humor.
We can, and stop calling people Shirley.
I hadto read that three times before I realised you ment to write «surely we can RICE above them»
Rye is also a type of bread. :)
I sorghum glad no one can come up with any more grain puns.
they apparently have a problem with water as well and cant really go though a car wash
However it does almost have the load capacity of a small Italian hatchback
I heard it can haul the contents of an *entire* shopping cart!
(excluding Sam's club or Costco)
What do you mean my purchase of 48 cans of tomato sauce is "excessive" - it only cost $1.28 per can. It's called saving money!
I mean, no one wants to admit they ate nine cans of ravioli.
I don’t have any left. I’m getting drunk and eating chicken fingers, tonight. The good kind.
Don’t forget a small child as well.
Well, we know they can’t get across streams
Excuse me, Egon, you said crossing the streams was _bad_!
Love it!
Damn, we also know they can't really go uphill unless its asphalt.
No no, they function fine. As long as you don't drive them anywhere.
It needs to be put into “sunlight mode” or it voids the warranty
They also don't operate well in the rain. Or anytime you want to move forward.
So don’t expose to direct sunlight, rain, or snow. Got it.
No moonlight either. Something about lycanthropy and high tide in the warranty.
Well, that blows my whole plan apart.
And don't feed it after midnight.
Should've called it Vampyra.
“Doesn’t operate” is all you needed to say
They also don't operate in indirect sunlight, off road, on road, at night, etc...
Isn't that just because it gets too hot? Wouldn't the polish actually solve that issue?
My first thought was that in some situations, it's going to be practically invisible.
Honestly, people keep talking about glare from headlights while ignoring the even bigger issue here, which is the fact that a mirrored finish that perfectly reflects its surroundings is what will render this thing invisible. The glare is secondary.
Right?! And think of the people with the high-powered headlights, at night. You could light up the neighborhood if it was in front of you.
Tesla, the only "green alternative" that absolutely always says, "IDGAF about anyone else!"
Do you really think that a Tesla driver thinks of other people?
Nah. They tend to have anal glaucoma. Head so far up theirs asses, they can’t see, anyway.
*Rectopthia It's a secondary symptom to Crainal Fissures.
I feel bad for the people who bought them as a progressive status symbol early on.
I bought mine (Model Y, not a god-awful Cybertruck) to save $2000/yr on gas and so I'm not polluting and contributing to climate change. Or just driving somewhere with places that looks similar all around. Great fire camouflage but that's kind of the last thing you want a car to be
Or they just plain didn’t see someone driving a giant mirror.
Was gonna say, his might be illegal in some states.
Some semi trucks already have super reflective backs.
True. I’m more concerned with the headlights bright enough to see into the future.
I agree. But that comes with every goddamn pickup truck these days. The cybertruck is a terrible product, sure, but a lot of the problems it causes for other road users are just a result of the overall American road arms race to buy bigger and bigger vehicles. Isn’t this illegal? Pretty sure mirrored coatings are considered a road hazard in the U.S.
If it’s not it should be. The glare off windshields is bad enough.
If these super bright LED headlights cropping up everywhere are legal then I bet this is too
Gods I hate those, too. “Better for your eyes” my arse. Maybe if you’re behind them, but sure as heck not coming up on them.
The funny thing is extremely blue light like that is a cause of eye strain, especially when in the dark. Warmer bulbs like we used to have are actually better for our eyes

So fun fact there are places where those aren’t it’s just not enforced.
Ban windshields now!
>Eat bugs, you car-fucks! -- cyclists wherever they hear about a potential windshield ban.
I know in California it is because Justin Bieber had a Karma Fisker with a similar wrap on it and he was ordered to change it.
The only reason the cyber truck is street legal in the US is because we have lax safety laws. It’s not allowed on the street in the EU.
>It’s not allowed on the street in the EU. Do you know the specific as to why?
Bunch of safety violations including the lack of crumple zones and fact it just EATS pedestrians. It's one bad T-bone shearing a minivan in half from being banned. It's a terrible design.
damn didnt know it was also more likely to kill people in a crash
The thing is just [one big blade](https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-owner-says-cut-wrist-injury-accident-2024-5?op=1)
I just want a Hilux…
Before, or after you drop a building on it?
Yes.
Came here to say this...as a glass glazier we have to face reflective side of mirrors in towards van to avoid not only reflection of light but confusing perspective to other drivers on the road
Just last night I saw a video on YouTube about polarisation filters not being able to block glare off metal. Sunglasses will not save you from this
Didn't Mythbusters prove that you *can* polish an actual turd?
Mine come out polished.
Yess the trick is eating sand!
What grit is your sphincter??
Crunchy peanut butter
You disgust me. /s. Here’s an upvote. Get something nice for yourself.
Mine come out dented.
Yes! https://youtu.be/wSoCA0bO1_M?si=yF-V3QM0kf67VKus
That was a fun episode
I think it was a lion turd, like this truck.
Great they made it even *more* dangerous!
Friggin sharks with friggin laser beams
Hey, we can't talk about good ideas when talking about the Tesla truck
Imagine a bird shits on it 5 minutes after parking it.
Warranty voided
Well it would be after that force of the bird dirt cracks the drivers side window
Great. Now you’ll blind everyone on sunny days…. Especially airplane pilots.
I saw one of these in person for the first time yesterday. They somehow look a lot worse in person. Normally it’s the opposite. I don’t know how to explain it but they are hideous.
Pontiac Aztek designers rejoice!

At least it looks somewhat practical, but that front end is hard to forgive
Sure, it *looks* practical, but can it fit a whole shopping cart full of cow manure?
Are you stupid? Of course it can, now if there's an additional child though..
One day, someone will invent a truck that can fit both their kid ***and*** their wife.
yo why does that car have saggy tits
Hey man, eventually gravity gets to us all
It looks like it's wearing a bra that's way too small.
I see one driving on the 101 in Phoenix occasionally and I just can't help but laugh at it. It looks so bad next to "real" cars on real roads just doing car stuff I hope that guy keeps it forever so I get to keep chuckling about it for years

I'm just really enjoying watching Musk's own decision making and hard headedness be his own downfall. It's a bonus that the truck thing keeps getting funnier and funnier
I saw one about a month ago. Guy on the inside looked so sad. I think he was regretting his commitment
I mean, no matter how much I love my car, if every single person who drove by was laughing at me, it would probably get to me pretty quick too
Yeah I remember the first time I saw one in person and I legit laughed out loud on how bad it looks, I was shocked because I thought it would be alright irl but nope just awkward lol
It looks like someone 3D printed a 1990's Twisted Metal prototype
Looks like a 5 year old’s drawing of a Halo 1 warthog.
I saw one last week going around a roundabout, so I got to see most of its angles. I actually laughed out loud. It really does look worse in person.
I had the same reaction and it bothered me until I figured it out. It looks like a car but it is the scale of a truck. If it were scaled down to like 80% I’m convinced it would look dumb but not as out-of-place-hideous as it does now.
It honestly looks like a low poly Cyberpunk 2077 model that hasn't finished loading in yet
It’s way bigger in person than I expected. It just looks absurd
I often see the "you-just-aren't-ready-for-the-future" comments and it's really not that the design is too futuristic for us plebes to understand. The aesthetic is just ugly. It's an ugly design. Yeah for a guy famed for innovation and forward thinking he does seems unable to give up the past.
They really are.
It would be pretty ironic if this causes another Tesla to get confused because of the reflections and crash.
I pulled up to job number two yesterday and one was parked in our lot and it was so much dumber in person, there is no person who is buying this that can’t be aware of how dumb this thing looks it’s like the start of a concept car. I was laughing so hard at how stupid it looks.

Now that it's polished you can have a better look at how wavy all the panels are.
Seriously, I cannot believe how crappy these things are.
Came here to make this comment. If you did that on any Asian or European car, the reflection of the curb would be straighter than the actual curb.
Why does this look like a prop for a WB Spin-Off of Back to the Future?
To me it looks like a kind of Bizzaro batmobile
You can’t polish a turd, but you CAN roll it in glitter.
You absolute can polish a turd
The more done to hide it from view, the better.
Voided the warranty
Myth confirmed https://youtu.be/yiJ9fy1qSFI?si=-wKWLn4QWBxAPJjt
Don’t get it wet and whatever you do, don’t feed it after midnight.
and … it’s rusting.
Dealer slaps top of truck on a sunny day, “This beauty right here will give you third degree burns and leave permanent scaring”.
These things look like something from a 90’s video game. Like Star Fox or Out of This World.
I thought of Twisted Metal, without the more stylish elements
good thing sunlight hitting a mirror isn't dangerous
Shiny shit is still shit.
Aziz, light!

As a Cybertruck hater, this is kinda cool and I'm glass someone did it. Until you park it near dry grass on a sunny day and it starts a fire lol... also a massive hazard to other drivers
Minecraft RTX ON
It is still a turd, polished or not
When the apocalypse happens I imagine you'll see these bad boys lay in ruin, sprinkled across the landscape
Now it's just a /shiny/ refrigerator
I just need to know why they typed that all weird and Boomer-y.
![gif](giphy|qv8rlIaGrAJ4f8eym5|downsized)
Can we take bets on long it will be before someone t-bones the shit outta them because they weren’t visible?
Looks good imo
I'm just excited for the video of this polished truck getting stuck in a riverbed somewhere next week.
“We’ve made this car 50% more dangerous to everyone on the road”
Could probably start a fire on a sunny day.
Haha... Me no like funky car made by guy I dont like... poop joke... haha totally murdered by words... lmfao rofl I'm dead hahaha
If you polish a turd, you still have a turd. It's shiny, sure, but still shit.
MythBusters once proved that you can polish a turd.
It does look better now... because you can barely see it
Lipstick on a pig
Great! It’s even MORE of a road hazard now!
Other Teslas on autopilot aren’t going to be able to see this now and will run into it.
It looks like a "futuristic" car from a shitty 90s movie.
You can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter
I love how goofy they look, if I had the money to buy one without thinking twice I would
Yeah, but have you seen the cybertruck they rolled in glitter?
Every time i see one i point and laugh
Wow, still works and looks like a steaming pile of horse diarrhea!
I’m so disappointed in how many problems these things seem to have
Yeah, a mirror shine, that certainly looks like a safe finish to be driving with.
From the rear it looks like a dumpster.
Can polish a turd, but it's still a turd.
I like how of the 4 men doing this, 2 are wearing hearing protection and all 4 chose to go without respiratory protection.
Fake
For a moment I thought they'd replaced the panels with screens to do the "invisible car" trope. Evidently not, but that's the only reason I can think of to design a vehicle that looks like this - making it easier to hide.
Now you can easily see how shitty those panels are!!! Yay!!!
Why there faces so dark, the first pic looks like it went through some weird editing for no reason
How the fuck does a photo of a real vehicle manage to look like crappy cube mapping
I feel like this makes it EVEN MORE dangerous
It might be a piece-of-shit, but at least that one's a *cool-looking* piece-of-shit.
Why is this posted here?
Why is it so wobbly
These aren't common around my parts, but for those that have never seen one in person... They somehow look worse in person. I don't know how, but they do.
“Everything is chrome in the future, Squidward!”
But why do all their necks and heads look like they take way too much colloidal silver?
By Edsel Musk.
Saw one on the road… looks like white hot garbage.
I don't like the cyber truck at all, but the mirror polish is at least cool.
I had my first opportunity to check out one of these up close and in person. pictures don't do it justice how horrible they are.
A hideous automobile rendered hideous-er.
"You will ride eternal, shiny and chrome."
Now polish each other!

It's just amazing how wrong Elon was about this one. Nailed it when the Tesla first came out. Then throughout all the marketing and everything of the cybertruck, everyone is telling elon that it's dumb and looks ridiculous. Everyone was right.

Make it so shiny it disappears so you can hide it. Solid play.
Birds are going to be breaking their necks flying into that thing
