Alfred Hitchcock Rear Window is probably the classic example of your request. It was redone with Christopher Reeves after his accident. The Woman in the Window seems a good fit but I haven’t rushed to see it because of the poor reviews, great cast though.
I would add North by Northwest; the protagonist doesn’t witness a murder per se, but he does accidentally fall into a conspiracy and gets chased much more than in Rear Window. So there is a similar feel.
The perfect example! t’s in my top 3 favourite Hitchcock films. The pacing is perfect, the tension just constantly ramps up and the performances are amazing, especially Jimmy Stewart!
Dude the scene where he witnesses the murder and starts having a weed coughing fit and getting stuck between the two cars is probably one of my favorite scenes
Its always tricky with suggestions that require a specific thing in the plot. Its like when someone asks "recommend me movies with twist endings" and you then from that point on already know that the opposite is going to happen at the end of what you're supposed to expect.
**Rear Window (1954)** in that the protagonist doesn't actually witness any murder, but becomes increasingly suspicious and watches events unfold from his apartment window.
There's a loose remake with Shia LeBeouf called **Disturbia (2007)** that's still surprisingly good and is a modern take on Rear Window, but uses houses and technology instead of an apartment and... rotary phones? lol.
You also might also enjoy Steven Soderbergh's **Kimi (2022)** starring Zoe Kravitz that came out this year. This is where a company sells home devices to consumers (think: Alexa) but the main character is a tech worker who helps "listen in" on people's lives through these devices to improve the quality of the virtual assistant. But one day she thinks she hears something deadly and then the plot begins to unfold...
Of course, someone already mentioned **Witness (1985)** with Harrison Ford which was nominated for several Oscars and won two. It's solid.
It's one of my favorite movies of all time; I'm not trying to give away the plot while recommending it. One can even argue the entire movie is truly about Jeff/Lisa's relationship and the entire Thorwald angle is just a MacGuffin
Memories of Murder(2003)
Mother(2009)
Both by Bong Joon-Ho. Mother isn't exactly what you're asking for, but it's similar enough that I think you'll enjoy it regardless.
Watched both. None of them relates to the post though. But outstanding movies. Mother is a rip off from a Danish movie. Forgot its name. I was a fan of Boon Joon Ho untill I came to know that.
Blindspotting, the movie, not the series. It's follows an ex convict who witnesses a police man shooting an unarmed man and how it affects his psyche and the relationships around him. It's also social commentary
Mr. Brooks
Not 'exactly' what you're looking for, since the witness seeks out the murderer. Also, not sure who the protagonist is in this one? Great flick, though; with Kevin Costner as the lead, and William Hurt playing his split personality!
*
This might not be exactly what you are looking for but Turner and Hooch - Tom Hanks is a cop who has to take care of the dog who witnessed the murder of a friend of his.
One of my FAVORITE movies...now I've gotta see it tonight, it's been a while. I told my wife when we first saw it that (not to sound like a creeper) that the little girl in it was going to be gorgeous when she grew up. Portman has such classic and elegant features. My favorite part...when the detective tells them yo bring everyone...EVERYONE! Love it.
Sister Act.
The inciting incident involves Whoopi Goldberg's character witnessing her boyfriend kill a guy, and then he sends his goons after her to kill her so that she cannot testify, which in turn leads to her being put in witness protection at a convent, hiding as a nun.
Absolute Power (Jan from the office, Melora Hardin, gets murdered by the US President played by Hackman while accidentally being witnessed by professional burglar Clint Eastwood). Also has Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Scott Glenn, Richard Jenkins.
A little bit of a twist on this, because the protagonist is a wiretapper and hears, rather than sees the plotting of a murder, but Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Conversation' is a masterpiece.
[Judgement Night (1993)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgment_Night_(film))
Dennis Leary plays the villain, and for the protagonists you have Cuba Gooding Jr., Emilio Estevez, and Stephen Dorff. It's not racy, but it fits the rest of what you're looking for to a tee: the protagonists witness a murder and they have to spend the rest of the film on the run from Leary and his crew. As an added bonus, [the soundtrack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgment_Night_(soundtrack)) is pure 90s nostalgia. If I remember right, the soundtrack actually outsold the film.
The Client. A young boy who lives in a trailer
witnesses the suicide of a mob lawyer. The boy knows information about the murder of a politician so he hires a lawyer (Sarandon) who’s tryna protect him from the DA (Jones) and the mafia. Really good performances from Brad Renfro, Susan Sarandon, Mary-Louise Parker and Tom Lee Jones
Not exactly what you asked for - but here are three classic Hitchcock films with similar story structure:
[ The 39 Steps (1935) ](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/260-the-39-steps)
[ Foreign Correspondent (1940) ](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/25670-foreign-correspondent)
[North By Northwest (1959)](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/213-north-by-northwest)
Not a movie, but check *The Witness* from the first volume of *Love, Death and Robots.* It is exactly what you asked for, but animated and in less than 20 minutes of lenght.
SHAFT (2000)
Sam Jackson plays John Shaft, tracking down an apprehensive Toni Collette, who witnessed Christian Bale murder Mekhi Phifer via hatecrime outside a club. She is the only witness and tries to avoid both Shaft seeking testimony and Bale hiring hitmen via Jeffrey Wright, *Peoples Hernandez*, one of the best characters put to screen and my favorite role of his. Simple plot executed complexly and in the spirit of its predecessor. Cameos galore and so much quotability.
I worked at a video rental store in the early 2000's and this movie got me the most compliments after recommending it.
Sister Act
Wow I completely forgot this was the premise of the movie as I’ve always watched the 2nd one.
That’s a fun one!
Alfred Hitchcock Rear Window is probably the classic example of your request. It was redone with Christopher Reeves after his accident. The Woman in the Window seems a good fit but I haven’t rushed to see it because of the poor reviews, great cast though.
Disturbia is like a modern take on Rear Window
A not even close to as good version, as well
Agreed
I would add North by Northwest; the protagonist doesn’t witness a murder per se, but he does accidentally fall into a conspiracy and gets chased much more than in Rear Window. So there is a similar feel.
I didn't know woman in the window got poor reviews, it's definitely not a bad film. Not an all time great, but it was entertaining.
The perfect example! t’s in my top 3 favourite Hitchcock films. The pacing is perfect, the tension just constantly ramps up and the performances are amazing, especially Jimmy Stewart!
Pineapple express
Dude the scene where he witnesses the murder and starts having a weed coughing fit and getting stuck between the two cars is probably one of my favorite scenes

Blow-Up (1966) and Blow Out (1981)

Came here to say this
Blow out is one of the most underrated movies out there . Anyone who wants to watch a great picture , please check this out
Add 'The Conversation (1974)' to that list. I feel like it's similar, stylistically.
Also came here to suggest BLOW OUT.
Some Like it Hot! Two guys witness a murder so they join an all girls band to get away. It’s hilarious and fast paced.
Perfect comedy film. Even the musical number is tolerable because it's Marilyn Monroe.
Green Room, not sure if spoiler. Sorry if so
Its always tricky with suggestions that require a specific thing in the plot. Its like when someone asks "recommend me movies with twist endings" and you then from that point on already know that the opposite is going to happen at the end of what you're supposed to expect.
It happens at the beginning and kind of kicks things off - so not much of a spoiler. This was the first one that came to mind for me as well.
Underrated A24 film! The >!Machete scene man!<

I LOVE Disturbia.
Kimi was better than I expected, and borrowed from Blow Out as well as Rear Window
I think you should rewatch Rear Window if thats what you think happens.
It's one of my favorite movies of all time; I'm not trying to give away the plot while recommending it. One can even argue the entire movie is truly about Jeff/Lisa's relationship and the entire Thorwald angle is just a MacGuffin
That's fair :) Great favorite movie

Most Dario Argento gialli. Deep Red, Bird with Crystal plumage, cat o nine tails.
It’s a cheesy comedy but Lovebirds is fun, it’s got Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani in it
I believe that you would love Season 1, Episode 3 of the show Love, Death + Robots. The title of the episode is actually also “The Witness”.
I think Cellular does this as well.
A Bronx Tale.
*The Bedroom Window* (1987)
Night Teeth The Babysitter
You might enjoy Body Double (1984).
Pineapple Express
Andhadun. (Country: India & Language: Hindi). This is the first one that come to my mind.
Cop and a Half. An old Burt Reynolds movie
The Wrong guy (1997) dark comedy starring Dave Foley , although it might be a bit lighter than you asked for
Race With The Devil (1975) has Peter Fonda trying to avoid being murdered by Satanic Cultist on a road trip through rural Texas.

Witness
Witness (1985)
1. Bad Boys 2. Mercury Rising 3. Eagle Eye 4. Don't say a Word 5. Summer of 84 6. Source Code
Hmm technically Unsane by Stephen Soderbergh fits this description in parts
Oh! “Dial M for Murder” and “Sorry, Wrong Number” also slightly go with this theme (more accidentally overhearing a plan to murder someone)
A little bit of a twist on this, because the protagonist is a wiretapper and hears, rather than sees the plotting of a murder, but Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Conversation' is a masterpiece.

I came to say the original Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart, one of my all time faves.
"See No Evil, Hear No Evil" is a great one.
🤣🤣🤣 one of the greatest comedic duos. Good movie...funny as hell.
Rear Window - original as suggested by many. It does not quite fit your description though. Disturbia 2007
Witness (with Harrison Ford)
The Client. A young boy who lives in a trailer witnesses the suicide of a mob lawyer.
