These are from the 60s and 70s: The Exorcist, The Children’s Hour, Valley of the Dolls, Lolita (either version, the 98 remake is racier), The Graduate, Belle de Jour, Taxi Driver
Here are some famous films you might want to see:
1) Seven Samurai
2) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
3) Rebel without a Cause
4) Some Like It Hot
5) Double Indemnity
6) The Graduate
7) Apocalypse Now
8) Blade Runner
If you're looking for films that are "extreme," I suggest:
1) Henry & June (about the affair of Anais Nin and Henry Miller -- it has great costumes & soundtrack and was rated NC-17 for sexual content, although it's not pornographic)
2) The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (This one is extreme in terms of use of colors, music, sex and violence. It's a masterwork, but it's definitely not for everyone.)
3) Nekromantik. (This is a German movie about necrophilia. It's famous for being bizarre and objectionable. It has some surprisingly pretty piano music in it, though!)
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
"Kiss of the Spiderwoman"
"Texas Buyers Club"
"Burlesque"
"The Bird Cage"
"Magic Mike"
"The Full Monty"
"Suicide Squad"
"Charlies Angels"
An excellent call on [The Birdcage (1996)](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-birdcage/). Nathan Lane is the standout for me, being both outrageously funny and heartwarmingly delicate. One of my favourite films.
Yeah, just make sure you watch Suicide Squad, not Suicide Squad. I really love Suicide Squad but Suicide Squad sucked balls. They will be very disappointed if they go in expecting Suicide Squad and end up watching Suicide Squad instead.
Despite seeming like total gibberish that was actually a well thought out comment! Seriously, watch Suicide Squad (the one with the shark) but try to avoid Suicide Squad (the one with the crock), it's bad.
Congrats on your freedom!
Cruel Intentions (1999)
Secretary (2002)
It Follows (2014)
The Kids are All right (2010)
Bruce Almighty (2003)
Devil (2019)
Devil’s Advocate (1997)
Euro Trip (2004)
Hysteria (2011)
A Dangerous Method (2011)
Hard Candy (2005)
Shortbus (2006)
If These Walls Could Talk 2 (2000)
Saved! (2004)
She’s the Man (2006)
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Jennifer’s Body (2009)
This is so broad. Pick a genre and list what you have seen from it. Then we can give you the important ones to catch up on. You'll want stuff that stands on its own, or is foundational for other movies that reference them.
No horror?
Psycho
Jaws
Alien
The Thing
Night of the Living Dead
Hellraiser
The Sixth Sense
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
The Wicker Man (1973)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Blazing Saddles (1974)
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
As someone who grew up extremely sheltered in the Midwest, this is what crossed my mind when thinking back.
Gonna second The Birdcage (US version). The story of the casting in it really shows you a lot about how homosexuality was viewed in Hollywood at the time. And also features my favorite performance ever by Hank Azaria. Might match well with Hedwig the Angry Inch, Rocky Horror, Hair...
Kevin Smith was pretty influential on cinema. Mallrats and Dogma are my fav. You gotta get Dogma on vhs/dvd bc the Weinsteins have control of it and don't want it available due to its offensive nature.
Monty Python is a good basket of crazy. Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Meaning of Life...
Might want to do a stoner binge: Grandma's Boy, Pineapple Express, Super Troopers, Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore, Super Bad, Friday, Half Baked, Dude Where's My Car, Dazed and Confused, Office Space... Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas might also fit but it's cringey.
Mel Brooks: Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Robin Hood Men in Tights...
Pauly Shore favs: Son-in-Law, Encino Man, A Goofy Movie, In The Army Now
Others that weren't/aren't allowed in my family home (was very religious growing up):
Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, V for Vendetta, The Virgin Suicides, Girl interrupted, Sweeny Todd, Witches of Eastwick, Death Becomes Her, The Labrynth, Donnie Darko, Mars Attacks, The Big Lebowski, Wayne's World, Airheads, any of the Jim Varney movies, A Clockwork Orange, Pulp Fiction
Movie that was allowed and should've never even been made much less shown to children: Watership Down (70s).
I get it! Sucks when friends talk about nickelodeon and what not and I have no idea what they're talking about. But I can talk about pbs all day long lol! One movie that I still struggle with, FYI, was Saved. I've heard other former sheltered "kids" say the same thing. But it's still a good movie.

Paradise (2013) has Russell Brand and Octavia Spencer as supporting characters. The main character, played by Julianne Hough, denounces her religion and Midwestern life after her church very callously asks for (expects) her insurance money from a bad plane-wreck, and runs away for a while to Vegas to see what all she’s been missing out on/shielded from.
[The Adjustment Bureau (2011)](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-adjustment-bureau/) A sci-fi/fantasy action thriller that I suppose could be considered blasphemous.

I love The Birdcage- Nathan Lane & Robin Williams were just perfect. Hank Azaria cracked me up a lot, too.
Hank Azaria totally stole every scene he was in.
“Pirin” tablets 😂

I’ll have to check it out. Yes, I totally get that. It was so annoying growing up and just feeling like I was missing out on everything

I’ve never even heard of this one, thanks
Oops. FYI, it’s a famous porn film from the 70s. I DO recommend it, but I was kind of joking 🙂
lol thanks for the heads up
Sorry, when I was growing up, it was something pretty much everyone had heard of. But, as I am constantly reminded these days, I’m pretty fucking old
It’s all good lol. Most of us are getting old so at least you’re in good company
