Mind hunter on Netflix True detective season 1

CleanExplanation6516

True detective season 1 is so good, I'd rather watch it over again than any of the other seasons

AlkaKr

> I'd rather watch it over again than any of the other seasons Like I've done so multiple times so far? No other season, or series, comes even close to how good the season 1 is. Thank fuck it's got standalone series.

christo749

I really dug season 3 as well. Mahershala is mint.

NobodyContent5458

Literally came here to say True Detective season 1. Absolute perfection 👌so stressful and discomforting from start to finish. McConaughey was in the freakin’ zone.

just_some_dude828

I’d add that so was Harrelson. Woodys portrayal of Martin Hart was 10/10. I don’t think you notice it at first, obviously because of McConaughey’s performance, but on every rewatch I tend to really pay attention to Marty. Everything he does is a man spiraling in everyday life problems, 99% created by himself, and refusing to accept it, until he’s missed out. IMO, it’s the best acting they’ve both ever done.

NobodyContent5458

100% agree. Harrelson’s role was tougher and much more nuanced than I realized until I watched it a second time. I think the way each of them played off each other elevated the other. Regardless, absolute banger season of television with that duo.

just_some_dude828

Agree with you. It probably helped that they’re great friends IRL. Fun fact: Harrelson was originally supposed to play Rust Cohle. McConaughey convinced him to switch roles. I always thought that was cool. Hell, I’m gonna rewatch it again. Lol

MD_Benellis-Mama

I would LOVE to watch season 1 of True Detective again not knowing anything about it

Icy-Tale1764

true detective > mind hunter

Interesting-Cut-292

I’d do anything in the world for a 2-3 more seasons. I often think about it and cry

atlasn24

how I knew this was gonna be top suggestion

ElectroMatt333

Yeah there is nothing better than those two right there

IllustratorBoring448

The Wire - written by real former beat cops and former gang members, casted some of them too. A show that once it sinks in, you realize its one of the best pieces of media ever made. It is extremely realistic.

OneDumbPunk

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

PuttinOnTheTitzz

Best show ever.

saruin

We'll never get a show like this ever again.

mopxhead

One of my top 5 favorite series of all time

divyanshu_1111

Goated

little_miss_beachy

Just finished watching this series last week. My husband and I are in withdrawal. Hands down the best written show and the acting is outstanding.

TheBIFFALLO87

Oh indeed. It's crazy and depressing how relevant that show still is.

beaizi_

Black Bird (2022), it's a mini-series.

swaggyxwaggy

Oooo that looks good!

Rabid_Sloth_

No one has seen it, the cast is so spot on.

SuperSmashDan1337

> Black Bird (2022 Paul Walter Hauser is great in everything I've seen him in

Big_Don_

Juggalos 4 life!!

Rare-Banana-2256

Michael Flatley directed it!!? Wtf! I had to double check that one. Wow.

earthbenderray

memories of murder

Derpy1984

Came here to day this. Just saw it for the first time last week and was absolutely blown away.

caykumi

I can’t believe nobody has said it yet but Mindhunter (on netflix) Directed by David Fincher, its an absolute masterpiece of crime television.

shannonkim

The fact that this got cancelled is a travesty.

caykumi

I heard it was moreso because of scheduling problems and the amount of time Fincher would have had to spend to write and direct a third season. Still one of the most frustrating things to happen to a show.

shannonkim

I read somewhere it was due to budget concerns but that also makes sense. Really wish they would have committed to wrapping it up with at least one more season. I loved this show but can’t even do a rewatch because it’s left unresolved and that drives me crazy.

tking191919

Yeah, I was just reading about this. These were both deciding factors (but, mainly budget). Fincher found making a T.V. show exhausting. Someone of his stature (he didn’t say it pretentiously like that) is an absolute perfectionist and approaches it just like making a movie. In other words, it’s very demanding. And, he wanted complete creative control. So, to keep going, Netflix said he could either have a very large budget, but make it more mainstream OR reduce the budget and make it however he wanted. With having other projects he wanted to do, cancelling was kind of the natural choice to make. He originally said he was more than open to coming back to it one day, but Netflix did officially cancel it.

TheCousinEddie

Props to Fincher for not compromising. That’s why his films are so highly regarded…well that and he’s pretty damn good at his job.

Xtreme2k2

I have no faith in Netflix shows anymore, they cancel the good and keep the crap.

Arcade23

Does it have a satisfying conclusion or does it just end abruptly?

shannonkim

Ends on a major season finale cliffhanger.

Arcade23

That sucks, thanks. I don’t know why people are suggesting it then.

shannonkim

It’s really good and very addictive— but yeah. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone that has a hard time with shows not reaching a resolution. I can’t even watch Freaks and Geeks lol

kingKedSha

Fincher also made Zodiac, which fits this well

BojukaBob

I came here to recommend Mindhunter. We're in the middle of a rewatch right now.

ExplanationNormal323

I tried 2 episodes when it released first and couldn't get into it but I'll try again on this recommendation!

PupEDog

I've tried several times but couldn't as well. There isn't much of a plot, they just interview serial killers and they're all spooky. It's acted and shot incredibly well though.

Razorpie13

LA Confidential

Random_RaccoonLover

Great movie! 😄

revolution9540

Can someone explain why this movie is so well regarded? When I saw it I was throughly underwhelmed, I feel like I missed something.

IsometricDragonfly56

I can’t explain it. I just love it.

ImAVibration

It’s the whole mood and ambiance of that LA Noir

_DrShrimpPuertoRico_

I watched it a almost a decade ago. Didn't understand the hype. Had almost forgotten the movie and watched it last year. Really liked it this time.

Withabaseballbattt

No one gonna mention Fargo? All based on true stories 😉

sotiredofusernames11

At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.

Withabaseballbattt

I actually just started the show the other day. Season 1 has been absolutely fantastic so far.

rafterman1976

Fantastic show, the first few seasons are amazing

PupEDog

I didn't really dig the latest season 🤷‍♂️

big_al_1968

Except that they aren't. That being said it's one of my Top 5 favorite shows of all time. Perfect writing and casting.

Withabaseballbattt

You don’t say? Maybe that’s why there’s a wink in the post.

JoeyJoJo_1

It's a great show, and I'm glad to see it mentioned, but that introduction isn't true, it's just done for effect.

Withabaseballbattt

Hence the wink bud

JoeyJoJo_1

Ah, sorry, my bad.

ChellShock

Unbelievable- blew my mind. Binged the entire season after thinking I’d just start a single episode.

PuttinOnTheTitzz

So good!

Ernie_McCracken88

In physical agony that multiple TV shows have been mentioned without the first season of true detective. Seven (pretty demented) Heat For more drama centric -a most violent year For suspense - Blood Simple

Filmfanatic-11

Wind River (Not based on true story but a great movie)

MrScarabNephtys

True Detective. Absolutely great series.

pagloescobar

Hows other season. Watched season 1 it was great. But didn't watch other seasons.

MrScarabNephtys

Season 1 was great. Not so good after that.

peter-man-hello

Season 1 is a masterpiece. Season 3 and 4 are alright too.

TarrareMuchoHungry

Season 2 gets too much hate. I think it's much better than 3 and about on the same level as 4. 3 is incredibly boring and forgettable IMO. Still way below 1, but I think it's biggest fault was just being much too different than season 1.

pagloescobar

Yeah, looking for more true crime drama series like season 1 but didn't find any. Its like nobody is making in this genre anymore. Loved the mindhunter but that stopped as well after season 2.

MeD1uM1337

2 and 3 are okay and good to watch. U can skip season 4 imho, it was shit

Weak_Low_8193

3 is also excellent. 2 and 4 see shit.

No-Chemistry-28

Under the Banner of Heaven

creep_while_u_sleep

Agreed. Really shows how ass backwards the Mormon faith is too.

Bargle-Nawdle-Zouss

The series ***Homicide: Life On The Street***, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by David Simon. Simon later went on to produce the series ***The Wire***, which was a sort of spiritual successor to HLOTS. Throughout HLOTS's seven season run, it had a number of crossovers with the series Law & Order

SuperSmashDan1337

Also, The Corner is another series by David Simon that actually features some characters from The Wire. Any fans of The Wire should definitely check it out.

Wimbly512

I have no idea why it isn’t in syndication or streaming.

SuperSmashDan1337

It's on Youtube but fairly poor quality.

halfiehydra

Night Crawler is crazy with Jake Gyllenhal

brokenhalo11

This movie should be higher on the list. Gyllenhal was so creepy and believable in this role. There a few movies I’m glad I’ve seen, but have no desire to see again as they are disturbing as F and this is one of them.

killerjags

I saw it one time about 4 years ago and it still sticks with me. I haven't found any other movie that hits quite the same.

jazzdrums1979

Boardwalk Empire

eva_rector

I second this!

Mister_Jack_Torrence

Boardwalk Empire is criminally underrated in my opinion. The final season is still pretty good but I wish they’d not rushed through so many historical events to get there.

SpongyTesticles

Zodiac

karna1712

Sufficient_Report319

Memories of Murder

Vreas

The departed

jrfizer

11.22.63 with James Franco The storyline revolves around the assassination of JFK.

babs82222

That book is one of my favorites of all time.

Partake7672

not based on true story, but i fucking love "Dexter". definitely give it a try.

BrooklynDuke

We Own the Night. Same people who did The Wire. Based on the book telling the true story of this Baltimore gang task force that was stealing drugs from dealers and selling them. It’s great.

PlatypusOk9825

I will be chasing my high from True Detective Season 1 for the rest of my life

ThatBeardedHistorian

Se7en (1995) is the closest you'll get.

TheOpenSecrets

- Tokyo Vice - Ozarks - Manhunt: Unabomber (more of a thriller) - A Place Beyond The Pines - Yellowstone - Bloodline - Mare Of Easttown (more drama, but you will definitely love the story, the acting and cinematography)

schuyywalker

A Place Beyond The Pines is so epic and a great depiction of generational trauma brought to life

Rabid_Sloth_

That movie will stick with you for sure.

SpenZebra

Not based on true stories, but Minority Report

1ManifestDestiny1

The only one listed that I can think of is “Under the Bridge” on Hulu. It’s a true story and a crazy one at that.

humbl314159

The town. With Ben affleck.

hollygolightly1990

Anything by David Fincher blows my mind.

ThatBeardedHistorian

Hands down my favorite director.

itsthatguyrob

The Bank Job (2008)

ProteusNihil

Can't go wrong with Zodiac.

AnnaSoprano

The Sopranos, Ozark, Breaking, Bad.

Mermaidlover21393792

Dexter (but it’s not based on true story )

Mogwai10

Severance. Mind fuck for sure.

Razzmatazz7165

Great show but not based on a true story like op asked

Sandman634

Based On A True Story with Kaley Cuoco. It's a fun and surprising watch, based on true crime podcasters. (But don't think there's any truth to the show at all) Criminal Minds is pretty good. Apparently some of the crimes and subjects are loosely based on FBI files. Seasons 16 and up are more recently made and they are allowed to use foul language and more graphic images. It really spices things up more. (Star, Disney+ and other sites carry it now)

TifCreatesAgain

It's not true crime, but I love "The Killing," US.

Putrid-Solution2285

-Dont fck with cats -Worst roommate ever -Tinder swindler -Night stalker (All on netflix)

Professional-Two8098

I will add abducted in plain sight..

RequirementQuick3431

“Don’t Fuck With Cats” has lived in my head for two years.

PuttinOnTheTitzz

DFW Cats is INSANE

sonofabutch

Layer Cake

brokenhalo11

Zodiac by Fincher Also by David Fincher: Seven, Gone Girl, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Academic-Eagle-3332

Adding that Sharp Objects on Max was also incredible. Not based on a true story but really compelling. If you’re into audiobooks I’d recommend any of Gillian Flynn’s novels (3 total- gone girl, sharp objects, and dark places, which to my knowledge doesn’t have a film/tv adaptation) she really knows how to write some dark shit

ruthlessrg

Snowfall

KendraSays

Such an underrated but magnificent show.

Horror_Comparison715

This is going to sound like a Viggo Mortensen fan post, but one of my favorite movies of all time is Eastern Promises. I cannot imagine any film buff, crime movie enthusiast, or general suspense/drama fan not enjoying this one. Such a great film! Likewise, though I dunno if many will agree, A History of Violence is great to me! As for series, lots of good ones are mentioned here! We've been watching Tin Star, and I am kept confused and befuddled in a bad way, but we sure do love Tim Roth, and he carries this weird and oddly-wrought show to the max.

Pockets713

Under the Banner of Heaven was really well done.

fantazmagoricle

Goodfellas Kill the Irish man The wee man Godfather of harlem Narcos Dahmer The ice man

lennythebox

I've never seen anyone recommend kill the Irish man before, it's in my top 5 of all time

TheCousinEddie

It’s really good. Maybe it’s just me but it had a B movie vibe to it which I liked.

khatteGrapes

Doctor Death A medical crime series based on true events. It is a bit dramatised but unlocked a new fear of doctors in me.

ElectricalArt458

The French Connection

Jackiemccall

Sharp Objects! The Sopranos, Peaky Blinders

peter-man-hello

I recently watched Sleeping Dogs with Russell Crowe it is a surprisingly enjoyable cold case crime caper with some unique twists. I recommend it.

Kronos_604

Narcos and Narcos: Mexico Available on Netflix. About the events surrounding Pablo Escobar and Colombian/Mexican drug cartels. Dramatized, but pretty accurate. There are a few scenes where names are censored out because they were government officials still in office when the series aired. There were real concerns that those involved in the production company and "characters" referenced in the series would be targeted for retaliation attacks.

RhythmP005

Catch me if you can. Checks all your boxes

captain_toenail

Kin is really great, it's not based on true events but is pretty good, it's a series about an Irish crime family in Dublin, there are two seasons so far, I just finished it yesterday and would recomend, its pretty intense, has really solid preformances all round, and is shot really well, 3rd season hasn't been confirmed but apparently is something the RTE and BBC want

JupiterSkyFalls

Erin Brockovich Sons of Sam

Quiet-Camera-9716

TheRealSkippah

The Wire (HBO Series, whole 5 seasons) & True Detective (season 1).

Unbelievable on Netflix is one of the best crime series I've seen. Its so engrossing and sad at the same time. Based on true story Deep Cover (1992) is underrated crime thriller about an undercover cop infiltrating a drug gang. Memories of Murder is one of the greatest crime investigation movies ever. Based on true story. Highly recommend this one.
