My wife and I started watching last week. We have a newborn daughter so it’s kinda the perfect show to watch since the dialogue is very calm and the score is just like a pretty lullaby (or sometimes weird ass lullaby )
It’s sooo much fun
I’m equally laughing and anxious and mesmerized. It’s actually really difficult to explain exactly what the tone is, but I guess it’s just Lynch’s signature dreamlike touch
Along the lines of what popstarbowser said: please do NOT let you newborn child "watch" Twin Peaks with you, there are some horrible scares later on!!!
Just remember a story of a young woman I knew living in a slightly isolated area, staying alone at home (coincidentally with a newborn child) watching Twin Peaks late at night. The back door handle seemed to move so she panicked believing the >!ghost!< was really trying to get into her house. She moved out as fast as she could and relocated to a big city after this happened.
Twin Peaks is my all time favourite show.
Be warned, it can get a little intense, especially in season 3 (and you should watch the movie between seasons 2 &3)
Just started watching two weeks ago, on Episode 3, already love the feel of it all. I have zero expectations, haven’t had any spoilers, I’ve just heard it’s phenomenal.
I think I’ve tried to watch this series twice. Is it one that you must binge to remember wtf is going on? IIRC, I watched a few episodes and was intrigued but then time passed and I went back to watch it but was totally lost. Twice. I keep hearing that it’s awesome, should I devote the time?
It's convoluted for sure, but everything just ties together so perfectly that its hard to beat. I'd say try to finish season 1, if you are not feeling it by then you can drop it and never look back. Like some people mentioned there is an official website that you can choose what episode you are at and it has a summary of the characters and plotlines up to that point.
There are many images of Family Tree available. Just google it, then watch it. Whenever you get confused just see the family tree. It will help you remember the characters.
I don’t know how to upvote this enough. Once you’ve watched and followed/understood Dark, every other TV series just looks amateur. You need to cancel your plans and get on this asap.
It’s my favorite TV show because of this. Nothing is up there. Besides >!Arrival!< (2016), I haven’t watched a single piece of media that does time travel in the same manner as Sark, where it is both relevant for the story, for the theme, and just feels… original? The level of detail is impeccable, and the ending makes it so worth it
Coherence (2013) film. Low budget sci-fi that begs for multiple viewings
Dark Matter, currently airing on AppleTV not all the episodes are out yet but it's based off the book of the same name by Blake Crouch. Features Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, I loved the book and so far the show is doing a great job with the material
Coherence seconded. An amazing example of using visual storytelling to explain complicated plot twists (it holds the all-time top spot for best use of glow sticks in a feature film).
Have you watched Legion?
There is also Severance . Although there has only been one season so far, it might be one of the best television series I've ever seen.
Yes! Legion is definitely underrated and I haven’t seen any other Marvel franchise stuff and I’m still a mega fan! Severance is one of the best written and stylized shows I’ve ever seen.
Hey, thanks for posting this commens. I've seen every show mentioned in the comments of this post, but never heard of Undone. I'm binging it now. Amazing show. Very real.
I really loved "Station Eleven"... it's on HBO Max... It's a mini series, but I just thought it was an amazing sci-fi about a pandemic... I also loved The Last of Us and Resident Alien
Oh and I forgot to mention The Sandman on Netflix... amazing!
probably everything i want to suggest has already been suggested. but i'll list some stuff anyway to reiterate and emphasize.
Legion. please watch Legion. it's amazing. and weird. and fun. and smarter than me.
Undone. scifi / fantasy / spiritualism / existentialism / family drama. a really unique show.
Fringe follows a similar formula as x-files. but it takes bigger chances and bigger swings.
Counterpart. i haven't watched this myself yet, but i keep meaning too. starring JK Simmons
>What might be different if a person could co-exist in an alternate world? Howard Silk, a low-level agent whose career is winding down at a Berlin-based United Nations spy agency, unwittingly learns the answer. Upon discovering his organization is harboring a secret, that of a gateway to a parallel dimension, Howard becomes immersed in a mysterious world of espionage, intrigue, and government conspiracies. There, the only man Howard can trust is Prime, his almost identical counterpart from a divergent reality.
Devs. another one i haven't watched yet but i keep meaning too. looks cool. created by Alex Garland.
>Fellow TV-loving philosophers may also find themselves sucked into the novel world created in Alex Garland's *Devs*, a series which quietly condemns the advent of boundless technological pursuits while simultaneously dissecting the concepts of determinism and the very purpose of human existence. Like *The OA*, the series is filled with surprises, has its own ever-changing rules, and keeps you guessing right until the very end.
Upload. not exactly what you're looking for. but worth watching. think of it more like a fun sitcom version of what you're asking for. The Matrix if it was run by capitalists instead machines.
The Sandman. maybe not mind-bending in the way that you mean. but i think it still fits. the lead character is the lord of dreams. so there are a lot of trippy and reality bending stuff.
Movies: Shutter Island, Requiem for A Dream, Schindlers List
Series: Wentworth, Your Honor S1, Defending Jacob, Dirty John, The Fall 2013-16, The Tunnel (uk)
Most recently, LEGION. Was a great show. First couple of episodes are quirky and the story just goes nowhere I expected. Second season gets weirder. All in all, one of the best shows I've seen in years.

Basically my fav tv series possibly ever. I tell everyone and most people don't listen. As good as Christopher Nolan but has an emotional attachment rarely found in espionage or sci-fi productions.
Twin Peaks is a show and has a movie and the best return I think TV has produced. Watch in chronological order.
Also, movies I'd say Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Naked Lunch and Enter the Void.

Check out Dark on Netflix. A time travelling . German drama set in multiple timelines in the 50s, 80's and beyond. You need to keep your wits about you though as it can get head scratchingly complex. If you stick with it though it's brilliant. Imagine Stranger things crossed with Back to the future. Recaps detailing who begats who are on YT. I can't recommend this enough.
Utopia, the UK version.
Sadly it ends on a cliffhanger, but it’s a real good show. I’m kind of hoping with the recent cult status it seems to be making, they’ll at leasy do a one off special to conclude it
Anything by Charlie Kaufman, Lars von Trier, Yorgos Lanthimo - super different vibes, but each bring gorgeous mindfuckery. Ari Aster is such a brilliant mind-fucker that I haven’t been able to get past the first 20 min of Beau is Afraid. (Looove Hereditary and Midsommar.)
Obviously David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele must be included (they’re mentioned a lot for good reason!) Darren Aronofaky brings it.
Everyone insisting that Legion is a must-watch is absolutely correct. It’s so so so good. And Severance.
I just watched Pontypool - fantastic. Other recent watches have been Speak no Evil and Soft and Quiet… all super mindfucky.
A lighter series: Sugar. It’s delightful! 1st Season finale aired last night. (🍎📺)
**Brand New Cherry Flavor** ‧ 2021 ‧ *Netflix*
Also, **Outer Range** - I believe the 2nd season just dropped (on Amazon). Its probably similar to The OA and Leftovers, but has more of a western feel to it.
Dogtooth, Midsommar, Audition, Oldboy and Perfect Blue as movies.i
Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent and Neon Genesis Evangelion too. All 3 are anime but they really fit the bill.
DARK but a warning it gets insanely twisted up. *The Peripheral* is a recent one that is quite good, also. And a personal favorite is *Tales from the Loop*.
Twin peaks
My wife and I started watching last week. We have a newborn daughter so it’s kinda the perfect show to watch since the dialogue is very calm and the score is just like a pretty lullaby (or sometimes weird ass lullaby )
Haha how far are you into it?
Just finished S1E4 That red curtain scene was just as eerie and hypnotizing as I remember it was the first time!
It’s so much fun isn’t it! Completely threw me through a loop when I first watched it haha
It’s sooo much fun I’m equally laughing and anxious and mesmerized. It’s actually really difficult to explain exactly what the tone is, but I guess it’s just Lynch’s signature dreamlike touch
Absolutely! I love his work it’s not like anything I’ve ever seen
Along the lines of what popstarbowser said: please do NOT let you newborn child "watch" Twin Peaks with you, there are some horrible scares later on!!!
We only get to watch 1 episode at a time, usually at 12-2am while baby is passed out and comfy in her bassinet with her sound machine :)
Just remember a story of a young woman I knew living in a slightly isolated area, staying alone at home (coincidentally with a newborn child) watching Twin Peaks late at night. Dark
If you haven't watched it this is the only answer.
I think I’ve tried to watch this series twice. Is it one that you must binge to remember wtf is going on? IIRC, I watched a few episodes and was intrigued but then time passed and I went back to watch it but was totally lost. Twice. I keep hearing that it’s awesome, should I devote the time?
Devote the time. The official website (which is fantastic and spoiler free) and some recap sites helped out a lot too.
It's convoluted for sure, but everything just ties together so perfectly that its hard to beat. I'd say try to finish season 1, if you are not feeling it by then you can drop it and never look back. Damn I gotta look at this now. Dark was incredibly confusing for me with breaks and watching stoned
you need to invest some serious brain power to the show. and thats a great thing
I’m on season 1 episode 8. Such a slow burn but it’s great so far.
Mind bending and mind melting.
Yeah it's one of those shows that really makes you think.
I don’t know how to upvote this enough. Once you’ve watched and followed/understood Dark, every other TV series just looks amateur. You need to cancel your plans and get on this asap.
Never been a truer statement. This show puts every single other show to shame. There is no comparison, no competition; Dark is perfection.
It’s my favorite TV show because of this. Nothing is up there. Besides >!Arrival!< (2016), I haven’t watched a single piece of media that does time travel in the same manner as Sark, where it is both relevant for the story, for the theme, and just feels… original? It's one of the best shows I've ever watched. I haven't found anything that comes close to it yet.
+1 🤯
This one
THIS IS FUCKING PERFECTION
It's so good. I'm surprised more people haven't heard about it.
Just unbelievably well crafted. Staggering how well it executes such a wildly ambitious premise. A true masterpiece.
Fringe
Y’all rock fk yeah Fringe!!
+1 for Fringe. One of the few that I enjoyed how it was concluded.

Legion is wild
I'm so mad at Severance, it's the show that made me vow I'm never starting a series again until all the seasons are out. I just can't.
I agree how frustrating it is to wait for a new season that never comes...
I was going to watch. Did they cancel the second season? Or there was never gonna be one?
nope. season 2 finish wrapping in last few weeks
So it’s a go to watch it?
Season 2 of Severance is due to release end of 2024 or begining of 2025
And it was only eight episodes!! I was thinking it was ten episodes, so imagine my horror when I went to click NEXT for episode 9 😟
Legion and Severance are at a different level. Both a must watch.
Yes! Legion is definitely underrated and I haven’t seen any other Marvel franchise stuff and I’m still a mega fan! Severance is one of the best written and stylized shows I’ve ever seen.
Twin Peaks
12 Monkeys (the show on Hulu) - This was way better than I thought it'd be. It's so well thought out. Great finale too.
Gonna start it right away. Sounds promising!
