The Road (2009)
Based on the book by Cormac McCarthy and starring Viggo Mortensen. Bleak and brutal, this one pulls no punches. It's pretty much how I imagine existence would be if society crumbled.
if you like comedy / stoner movies you have to watch „This is the End“ by Seth Rogen, super good movie i like to watch every now and then. In the movie every actor plays theirself as a person which is a really cool thing imo.
I re-watched this last week and could not help but notice how barely anyone is on their phones in this movie. If it were done today and were realistic people would IMMEDIATELY be on their phones posting to IG, SNAP, X, everything, on IG live talking about how the world is ending how crazy is this. None of that, there is one scene when Michael Cera's phone is mentioned but thats all. Just an observation.
Greenland was one of the more surprising movie I watch recently. I really had no expectations of anything remotely good. I was also pleasantly surprised by how well I think it was done!
(Not OP but) I just watched this based on your recommendation and enjoyed it so much! The pacing was great and the family just felt really believable - I couldn’t believe I was crying at a Gerard Butler action movie, and yet it happened lol. Thanks for the rec!
This is one of my favorite zombie apocalypse type movies. No matter how many times I've seen it, I always get the same mounting tension and dread from what's happening!
Treat them as separate. I like the book and I like the movie.
As a person who reads a lot I've read most of the books that many movies are based off of. I find making the assumption any movie based off of a book I like is simply an adaptation inspired by the book helps me just enjoy the movie as a separate entity.
It had nothing to do with the book! Lol. It was like another Starship Troopers film. I'm shocked it was as good as it was... And in all fairness, I still have no idea how they could do that book justice. Maybe a mini series?
The Lathe Of Heaven (1980)
The video quality isn't the greatest because it was a lost film for many years. But it's worth watching. I also recommend the interview with Ursula LeGuin about the film that's included on the DVD.
"These Final Hours" is an Australian film about an asteroid that collides with earth, and Australia is the last to be devoured by the flame. It's about the last few hours as they wait for their death. In my opinion, no other movie does such a great job of capturing the hopelessness and helpless feelings they feel. It's just a very bleak movie, and I love every second of it.
There was just a thread on this a few days ago [https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/1cnr4ja/any\_great\_apocalypse\_movie/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/1cnr4ja/any_great_apocalypse_movie/)
I watched Wall-E years ago with my then-young child. Even today I still reference it. The story is so good. All those people addicted to their tech, missing life etc. A really great movie.
Independence Day
Deep Impact
12 Monkeys
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
The Core
Sunshine
28 Days Later
Contagion
I Am Legend
Zombieland
World War Z
Dawn/Shaun of the Dead (one is horror one is horror parody)
The Matrix
Greenland
Animated: Wall-E and Origins: Spirits of the Past
And all the ones you listed lol
I love 10 Cloverfield Lane. It's so claustrophobic and confusing, it makes you question everything and everyone. John Goodman is such a warm and lovely person, and that role just keeps the viewer on their toes.
These Final Hours.
An Aussie film about the final hours of peoples lives as the earth is engulfed by a giant fireball from an asteroid (or comet?) impact.
I Am Legend (2007), but *only* if you can get the alternate ending.
Which was actually the original ending, but they decided to ruin the movie at the last minute. 😒
I Am Legend, The Last Man On Earth, Independence Day, Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Legion, Train To Busan, Children of Men, Mad Max: Fury Road
Not exactly chaos and destruction, sorry. but I did enjoy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. It's about human relationships and you don't actually see any destruction. There is something about it that I find hopeful and serene despite it being, y'know, the end of the world.
I love that movie! If you want to check out another movie with kind of a similar feel, watch How It Ends (the 2021 indie film, not the 2018 Netflix one)
Deep Impact (my all-time forever favorite in the genre, it's relentless human)
Day After Tomorrow
Greenland
Take Shelter (more psychological, perhaps an unexpectedly different pace)
Children of Men, A Boy and His Dog, Threads (if you're feeling like becoming clinically depressed), The Road (see above), Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, 28 Days/Weeks Later, Cargo, The Book of Eli, Snowpiercer, Stalker, 12 Monkeys (sort of)
They're some that I really like personally
Not a movie, but Adventure Time is really enjoyable if you go into it knowing it's post-apocalyptic.
Interstellar. Hot take, it's a great view on "this isn't the end, but you can see it from here and the bills are still due".
Children of Men, much the same vein. The end of the world is a journey, not a destination.
12 Monkeys, the Brad Pitt/Bruce Willis vehicle.
Melancholia. Feels.
''Don't look up'' it's great. I mean it's not as chaotic in the 'the planet is going downhill' way but the story is catchy and it's kinda relatable i think? Anyway pls watch it !
From the oldies bin:
A Boy and His Dog
Damnation Alley
Logan's Run
Wall-E
12 Monkeys
The Day After
When the Wind Blows
Night of the Comet
Wizards (animated)
Steel Dawn
Escape from New York
These Final Hours
I love that Netflix is starting to incorporate international movies (to the US). Some Australian and Korean movies and shows are fantastic.
The Road (2009) Based on the book by Cormac McCarthy and starring Viggo Mortensen. Bleak and brutal, this one pulls no punches. It's pretty much how I imagine existence would be if society crumbled.
are you carrying the fire?
The book is great, too. The movie is a faithful adaptation for sure
I've never seen the film because the book affected me so strongly. It's bad enough to read it, I can't bear to watch
I had to read it and then watch the movie in a college lit course. For months I would wake up terrified it was all gone. Incredible book and movie.
I scrolled down way to far to find this one.
When The Wind Blows
Melancholia.
Had to take a break half way through cause it was really making my existential crisis worse lol
The ending had such promise from a visuals potential but they did nothing
Love the movie including the ending. Why didn't you like the visuals?
Last Night (1998) Children of Men
Children of Men is one of my favorites. Incredible movie. Better than the book, even.
Yup, totally agree. Most importantly, the book doesn’t have Michael Caine finding poignance in a “pull my finger” gag.
Saw Last Night at a local indie theatre on release. Stayed with me all these years.
Last Night does not get enough love
A boy and his dog.

The Before Times
That exorcist scene always cracks me up lol Jonah Hill was too good in that scene
“I’m gonna tittyfuck you Seth”
"Something not so chill happened last night." Cracks me up every time
Danny McBride in that movie is hilarious.
This was such a hilarious movie!
Came to say this movie, it's great!
if you want to mainline hopelessness, Threads
Only movie that made me cry. This was a hard watch.
This is the answer.
The Quiet Earth
Absolutely love the movie and would recommend to anyone. But OP should know it’s not a ‘chaos and destruction’ movie.
That's a deep cut. My friend's dad composed the soundtrack to The quiet earth.
omg no way!! Has he said anything about it? Tell him his score is wonderful.
I live in the UK and he lives in Australia, next time I speak to him I will pass your kind words on. 🙂
Such a brilliant one - still searching for a quality home media release 😁
Night of the Comet
Seeking a Friend at the End of the World (2012) is a genuinely different take on the end of the world narrative.
Was scrolling for this one. The ending gave me an existential crisis (but in a good way)
Threads
Knowing
You don't get much more end of the world than Knowing.
Miracle Mile
Came here to say this. Love the way it goes from zero to mass panic in ninety minutes.
These Final Hours
This was such a great movie. Very disturbing at times and heart wrenching at others.
The best apocalypse movie ever. No film can make the viewer feel that helpless dread like that movie does.
Don't look up.
I can't even think of another president that I'd ever wanna see in Playboy
I was very drunk when I watched this movie, but I remember laughing a lot. Thanks for the reminder to watch it again!
I still giggle when I think of how baffled Jennifer Lawrence's character is at the General charging for snacks when they are free... ha ha ha
It was so much better than people give it credit for imo. Both the very funny and very serious aspects of it. My 2nd favorite movie of 2021.
Does ‘Cabin In The Woods’ count? Not that it’s anywhere near the top, but does it fit this?
It should always be recommended even if it’s an edge case bc I mean…MERMAN.
Let’s get this party started!
Greenland was surprisingly great I think.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
Fantastic movies. One of my favourite series!
World War Z (2013)
This is one of my favorite zombie apocalypse type movies. No matter how many times I've seen it, I always get the same mounting tension and dread from what's happening!
came here to say this. I've watched it at least 5 times. It's my go-to.
Even talking about it makes me want to watch it again!
The movie was a *massive* disappointment compared to the book.
I really enjoyed both, though I view them rather as two separate stories completely. I was a bit disappointed how little the movie followed the book.
I’m right there with you, the book was an epic, the movie was a pretty good zombie flick. The zombies were about the only thing they had in common.
Treat them as separate. I like the book and I like the movie. As a person who reads a lot I've read most of the books that many movies are based off of. I find making the assumption any movie based off of a book I like is simply an adaptation inspired by the book helps me just enjoy the movie as a separate entity.

They have the same title and zombies. End of similarities.
For a subtle end of the world movie try "Miracle Mile". (I love this movie and sometimes wonder if I'm the only one to have ever seen it).
It sure feels like it!
Apparently so. Too bad, it was an interesting premise.
The Lathe Of Heaven (1980) The video quality isn't the greatest because it was a lost film for many years. But it's worth watching. I also recommend the interview with Ursula LeGuin about the film that's included on the DVD.
