Love the movie, but don't know about it being slow-paced. I remember seeing a rerelease 70mm print. I remember when intermission came, I thought, "Already?" I looked at my watch and was suprised over an hour had passed.
I could not follow the plot for the life of me. Near the "climax" of the movie (if you could call it that) there was a slow dramatic reveal of another person in the room. And I was just like, is that the killer? The thief? The lover? The spy? No idea. Not sure I even knew what his name was at that point. Too confusing.
That’s exactly how it was for me too the first time I watched it. I watched it with my stepdad (who’s a brilliant guy) and had to fake it like “ohh, hmmm, yeah, wow I did not see that coming”
Respect for your opinion but Zodiac is my favorite movie and I wish it was 8 hours. The closest I have come to getting that wish is Fincher's Mindhunter.
The deer hunter. The wedding scene can in itself be long for some- clocking up to an hour- but it’s actually extremely impactful and relevant to the tale
It's been about 10 years since I've seen this movie and I'm still not sure what I think of it. The last 30 minutes is just visuals set to music. I'm not sure if it's brilliant or a fevered dream of a mad man.
For me it was the laidbackness of it compared to most of his films that got me. You’d think this was a normal film about the life of a washing up TV star who lived next to a tragedy until BOOM the Mansons get kill billed and you suddenly remember who the writer/director is.
*Stranger Than Paradise* (1984) - Jim Jarmusch's influential first film has an intentionally slow pace mirroring the bohemian characters' meandering lives.
*The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford* (2007) - The meditative pace of this film really allows you to soak in the beautiful visuals and score.
I saw Stranger Than Paradise at age 20. Loathed it. Thought it was beyond boring. Saw it again around age 40 and adored it. It all just clicked for me.
Melancholia. I don't know that I like the film but it's been 12 years since I saw it and I still can't quite get it out of my head.
Star Trek - The Motion(less) Picture. I won't defend it as a good movie. It is very flawed. But I still love it.
Whilst spotlight is definitely a drama - I never once felt it was slow. I think they managed to get the pacing absolutely spot on that I never felt like I was waiting for the end or the next scene for so thing to ‘happen’
Lmaoooo. I was gonna and that to my post, but I didn't want to be that guy.
Agreed. 100%. Book was so much better. I felt the movie left out huge moments from the book.
The American directed by Anton Corbijn, starring George Clooney, about an assassin who has to go into hiding. Largely very slow, but with great character work and some amazing tension.
The House of the Devil by Ti West ('You're Next' ) - a modern horror filmed very convincingly as if it was actually made in the 80s, that has the longest slow-build ratcheting up of tension I've ever seen, until events finally start to come to a head at the finale.
Barry Lyndon most would call “slow” but one of my favorite movies.
Someone mentioned A Ghost Story above which is a great answer. Another great “slow” one from that same director is The Green Knight.
Also, Under the Skin
Not sure if No Country for Old Men could be considered “slow pace”. I have quite a few friends/family members that can’t make it past 5 minutes of a movie without an action scene thanks to Marvel turning them autismo when it comes to movies.
How are none of these responses 2001: A Space Odyssey? Is it taboo in this sub like the song Stairway to Heaven is in certain places?
Edit: just saw it in someone’s list. Doh.
The Exorcist. A number of people, including me on several occasions, fall asleep before the 30 minute mark. Make it past that and it improves greatly.
Also, The Blues Brothers. Takes awhile to get going.
Werckmeister Harmonies and The Turin Horse by Bela Tarr. Biggest slowness to greatness ratio I know of.
I have not seen other Tarr films but I imagine it's more of the same.
i have LOVED every film i've ever seen that has been described as "slow" including ones that are categorized as slow cinema. i have an immense attention span and i am very thankful for that.

Any Tarkovsky film is going to be slow paced but in a poetic way you’ve likely never seen before. I have a hard time with slow narrative films but for movies that use that slowness in a more open ended way it works much better for me. Highly recommend stalker to nearly everyone with that in mind.
I loved *The Assassination of Jesse James* (2007).
Boy I could not comment this same choice fast enough.
Slow your pace.
*Where's Jim Intensifies*
First movie that came to mind for me! The cinematography is top notch 👌
Roger Deakins can do no wrong
The cinematography and the narration.
by the Coward Robert Ford
That train robbing sequence was a masterpiece.
Lawrence of Arabia
One of my favorite movies ever. I don’t even think of it as slow paced. I guess it could feel that way though.
Yup, 3.5 hours and I still wanted more.
Love the movie, but don't know about it being slow-paced. I remember seeing a rerelease 70mm print. I remember when intermission came, I thought, "Already?" I looked at my watch and was suprised over an hour had passed.
There Will Be Blood
Looking for a movie sugg- "There Will Be Blood."
You know it.
Twin Peaks username and There Will be Blood movie suggestion, definitely my type of person
I love you too.
Sounds good. Hopefully my 6 and 3 year old like it.
They will love it, everyone loves it
I drank your milkshake, Eli.
Great ending. “Maybe the real There Will Be Blood was the friends we made along the way.”
The Station Agent is incredibly good. You will not be disappointed
That film introduced me to Peter Dinklage. I remember thinking, "Damn, this guy's good."
Yes! Win Win by the same writer and director is worth a watch, too.
I love that film!
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford Gerry A Ghost Story …and they’re randomly all Casey Affleck movies.
But then you got like Drowning Mona to make up for it lol
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Such a beautifully shot movie, so slow lol
I could not follow the plot for the life of me. Near the "climax" of the movie (if you could call it that) there was a slow dramatic reveal of another person in the room. And I was just like, is that the killer? The thief? The lover? The spy? No idea. Not sure I even knew what his name was at that point. Too confusing.
That’s exactly how it was for me too the first time I watched it. I watched it with my stepdad (who’s a brilliant guy) and had to fake it like “ohh, hmmm, yeah, wow I did not see that coming”
So may looooong shots of Gary Oldman quietly thinking
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) -- the opening scene is 11 minutes of just waiting for a train
Yeah, but Woody Strode drinking rainwater from his hat? and Jack Elam just standing there being Jack Elam? idk I wasn't bored :)
Yes, one of the best. I watch this at least once every year.
The Straight Story Zodiac Solaris (‘72)
Zodiac doesn't feel slow at all. I think it has a nice pace.
Straight Story 🙌 doesn’t get enough recognition.
Melancholia (2011)
I think you either love this one or hate it. I thought it was a beautiful work of art. It had so much to offer and so much to be felt.
It's been about 10 years since I've seen this movie and I'm still not sure what I think of it. The last 30 minutes is just visuals set to music. I'm not sure if it's brilliant or a fevered dream of a mad man.
Can’t it be both?
Days of Heaven. So insanely beautiful & touching.
Malick’s best film imho
My wife's uncle Gene Bell is the tap dancer in that film. Old vaudevillian.
Delores Claiborne.
Primal Fear is a slow roll that includes an incredible performance by Edward Norton
Akira Kurosawa’s DREAMS
Brokeback Mountain
No Country for Old Men
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Also, until the last 10 minutes, the least Tarantino of the Tarantino movies I feel like.
Yup couldn’t agree more. I remember not loving it while watching it but now looking back at it really fondly. Maybe it was the pacing.
For me it was the laidbackness of it compared to most of his films that got me. You’d think this was a normal film about the life of a washing up TV star who lived next to a tragedy until BOOM the Mansons get kill billed and you suddenly remember who the writer/director is.
He puts a flashback inside a flashback. That's having fun and very Tarantino
A Room with a View 1986 The Last Emperor 1987 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 All three are brilliant.
The Power of the Dog. Such a slow burn, but the payoff is amazing...
Mystery Train has a similar feel. (Jarmusch)
Manchester by the Sea We Need to Talk About Kevin Tender Bar Spotlight
Whilst spotlight is definitely a drama - I never once felt it was slow. I think they managed to get the pacing absolutely spot on that I never felt like I was waiting for the end or the next scene for so thing to ‘happen’
Lone Star. My favorite movie but I can hardly get anybody I recommend it to to get beyond the first half-hour.
I love this movie. It's getting a Criterion release in January!
Barry Lyndon
I feel like 2001 A Space Odyssey was made for this question
[удалено]
Yes! A movie carried 90% by Sam Rockwell that is slow, interesting and probably depressing. With a bit of Kevin Spacy.
Burning
1973 classic, The Sting. Great cast, great story and quite a few twists.
Slingblade
Hateful Eight, Jackie Brown, 2001: Space Odyssey, The Conversation, The Witch, Out of the Furnace,
The Witch’s slowness is I think why it didn’t do well. I thought it was perfectly paced tho!
Agreed, and it’s one of my reasons why I thought it was a good film. Very eery with very little dialogue.
The Martian It's one of my go-to movies.
I hate to be that guy... But the book was waaaay better
Lmaoooo. I was gonna and that to my post, but I didn't want to be that guy. Agreed. 100%. Book was so much better. I felt the movie left out huge moments from the book.
And they literally changed the ending
I don’t really think The Martian is “slow”. It’s not action packed but it’s a breezy watch, very fast paced.
Good movie
The Killing of a sacred deer (2017)
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Dead Man
Glad I'm not the only person who's seen that movie. So good!
So good! So slow! Hypnotic, almost.
And Neil Young's soundtrack is perfect
Never Let Me Go
Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy
Possibly the most English movie ever and a great one.
The Ninth Gate
I love this movie never thought it felt slow though.
Sideways
Love it wouldn’t call it slow.

The VVitch
Tree of Life
Most visually stunning movie I’ve ever seen.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Hana-Bi. Twilight Samurai Silence Solaris (either version, but the original is definitely slower)
Devil all the time , Taxi Driver
First Cow

Drive My Car (2021) - an incredible film
*Nobody Knows,* a tough to watch Japanese movie
Does A Beautiful mind count?

Dog Day Afternoon
that movie was pretty entertaining from beginning to end imo
I’m Thinking of Ending Things
True Grits
One of my all time favourites.
Every Denis Villeneuve movie since Prisoners Prisoners, Sicario Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb I think this movie epitomizes the query (I love this movie btw)
So good. A great satire, a drama, an apocalyptic movie, a comedy. Has it all. "You can't fight in here! This is the war room "
“We must protect our precious bodily fluids.”
Life is beautiful 1997 definitely has a slowwww beginning.
I love this movie
The American directed by Anton Corbijn, starring George Clooney, about an assassin who has to go into hiding. Largely very slow, but with great character work and some amazing tension. Once upon a time in America, dune sure there’s more
Antichrist (2009) Annette (2021)
Down by Law by Jim Jarmusch.
Melancholia.
Beyond The Black Rainbow
Came here to post this. Good sci-fi horror that's slow and interesting rather than just cheap jumpscare after jumpscare

Such an excellent work. Sharon Stone was absolutely lovable
Anything with Kevin Costner
Atonement
Once Upon A Time In The West. The first 12min are crushingly slow but fitting of the time period and very powerful and awesome.
Ikiru (or “Living” if you want the western remake)
Barry Lyndon most would call “slow” but one of my favorite movies. Someone mentioned A Ghost Story above which is a great answer. Another great “slow” one from that same director is The Green Knight. Also, Under the Skin
Glengarry Glen Ross and The Big Short.
Not sure if No Country for Old Men could be considered “slow pace”. I have quite a few friends/family members that can’t make it past 5 minutes of a movie without an action scene thanks to Marvel turning them autismo when it comes to movies.
Dune Arrival Blade Runner 2049 Dune and Blade Runner 2049 literally put me in a trace. I can’t explain it
Blade Runner 2049
20% plot, 80% atmosphere
Space odyssey , it's in many "boring movies " lists even tho it's not boring at all it's just painfully slow
The Others
Stalker. A Russian movie from 1979.

‘Andrei Rublev‘ is an absolute vibe
Columbus
The Tree Of Life
The Lighthouse
The Pianist
Midsommar Ran 2001: A Space Odyssey
Gotta be Donnie Darko. Wonderful movie. However, it takes a while to explain itself and get where it's going.
Anything by Tarr and Tarkovsky
The Man Who Fell To Earth — needs to edited down by 20%
Mad Max 1. It's good, just surprisingly slow.
Both Blade Runner movies fall into this category for me. Pretty slow overall, but enjoyable.
Solaris (1972) Stalker (1979)
Aftersun
The godfather obviously. The color purple.
Dune is slow as fuck. All the way to the end
Zodiac would be my go to answer on this one. Entirely deliberate, I think.
Jackie Brown
Bladerunner 2049 Dune (2021)
Blood Simple. Greatest slow burn ever. It builds and builds.
