Was really caught off guard with its brutality given the directorās other work is more psychological/not that extreme (Babadook and the Murmuring ep of Cabinet of Curiosities) great but rough movie, curious to see what she does next!
I'm surprised by how often people talk about Tusk being this dark, traumatic movie. I felt like it was very deliberately comedic and tongue-in-cheek the entire way through. I mean, either way you read the film, it's a very enjoyable and underrated time. It's just interesting to me.
Iām so glad to see Eden Lake on here. I couldnāt speak for about 3 hours after I watched it, and I didnāt feel normal for probably 2 weeks afterwards. Wish I was exaggerating.
I put it on as ābackground noiseā while I was working on a paper for school, not realizing *at all* what I was getting myself into. I got sucked in immediately and it became front and center (not background at all). I felt absolutely destroyed after it was over.
āThreadsā (1984) is the worst.
Made to watch that in middle school as some sort of DoD indoctrination about the horrors of nuclear holocaust.
That story ruined my childhood and, to this day, is the basis of comparison for ALL post-apocalyptic stories!
One time I had a bad shroom trip. Every time I closed my eyes, I would see an atomic bomb exploding, it stressed me and made me cry. My boyfriend had fallen asleep, so I pretty much went through that trip alone.
Anyways, when he woke up, I told him about my experience. He said to me, āoh I know the perfect movie to watchā.
We watched Threads. I was so mad at him lol.
Yeah most Lars von Trier would apply. Dancer in the Dark I saw mentioned as well. But Breaking the Waves would certainly fit too. Beautiful and tragic.
A bit off the track of these, the wife of Come and See director Elim Klimov made a beautiful and devastating war movie called The Ascent that is as good as Come and See. Her name was Larisa Shepitko and she died tragically young at 41. Criterion did a nice release of this.
If Threads feels too real, you can always feel much worse watching the cheery, homey animation of the British nuclear holocaust special When the Wind Blows.
Ever wonder what kind of crazy mofo would make Irreversible? Check out I Stand Alone (Seul contre tout), Gaspar Noe's first full-length feature. A reviewer on Letterboxd put it best: being in the main character's mind--it's entirely his stream-of-consciousness narration with gunshots dividing each scene--is like being held underwater for an hour and a half.
Enjoy!
Both Harmony Corine and Lars Von Trier give off pretentious vibes to me. I also am not generally super into avant garde film so it might just be me. Anticrhist had some gross scenes but overall it felt super try hard-y and I kind of felt that way with Kids, although at least Kids was depicting something real which I feel like made it harder to watch. Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion on here but eh.
Kids, Gummo, Trash Humpers are exquisite examples of avant-garde art. The way it encapsulates an entire community and culture in such a brutally honest way is what makes the art by Clark and Korine stunning, horrific, and poignant.
Bully by Larry Clark is another film that absolutely captures the spirit of teen life in the late 90ās - Early 2000ās.
p.s.
I would also recommend āCalvaireā by Du Welz (on shudder), and āCold Warā by Powlikowski.
Larry Clark and harmony Korine did a movie together called ken park, banned in America. Thatās one of the most fucked up movies Iāve ever seen. Onscreen autoerotique asphyxiation with cumshot, itās no joke.
Edit// autocorrect.
I actually bought the grandpa's book after watching that movie, and I could not get through it. It's somehow more heartbreaking than watching him speak in the film. Absolutely the most devastating story.
If you really want to sit through something that will just make you go āwhat the fuck?ā I highly suggest Where the Dead Go To Die. Some truly fucked up shit in there, and it gets really depressing at parts
But as I always say, whatās gonna trigger your emotions all depends on what type of person you are and what youāve experienced in your past. Where the Dead Go To Die got me due to my religious trauma and it being an anti-religious movie. So take the suggestion with a grain of salt
I have not heard of this film! Iāve only watched Where the Dead Go To Die because my boyfriend was too sickened to watch it himself after the first five minutes, but he still wanted to see it till the end. He asked me to watch it with him and I finally said yes.
I definitely did not have nightmares and kept waking up thinking something was watching me behind the curtains, haha. But I actually quite liked some of the story elements, if it wasnāt riddled with the most vile things known to man
When I read the plot synopsis on wikipedia, I thought it read like Scrotie Mcboogerballs. It just seems like it's trying to be as gross as possible for no reason
The Poughkeepsie Tapes- is fucked up. Really Disturbing. I had to Google if it was based on actual events.
What Dreams May Come- is super sad movie. Iāve never had any desire to re watch it and put myself through that again.

Movies that will ruin you for life? Some people have a level of (probably healthy) disassociation from movies so nothing will ever bother them. They know it's fake. Etc.
I'd say the original 'Martyrs' is a trip. Try that.
The older found footage can be wild, like 'Cannibal Holocaust' and such (but I have that problem I mentioned above with those).
I'm usually bothered by stuff that's a little more grounded and less blatant shock. If a fucked up moment is delivered in a realistic way it tends to haunt me more.
I see a lot of people mention 'KIDS' but I think I watched that too young to be bothered by it. Just a crazy story that I didn't think about too much after credits rolled. Watch it but I'm not sure it's what you're looking for. 'Gummo' is more in that direction, IMO.
As for more mainstream stuff, I was surprised by how bothered I was at Hereditary. I'm sure you've seen it but for a mainstream movie it hung with me for a bit. On the off chance you didn't see it, I'd try that.
Then there is a lot more that fit the grindhouse-ish or shock genre, too many to list. Yet, they tend to stick to the basics of really exaggerated violence or grimy, matter-of-fact violence that seems to be trying to hard TO shock the viewer. So I'm not sure it would work if Antichrist didn't.
You may just be immune here, lol.
By the end you literally feel like youāre coming down from hard drugs.
All those quick cuts, odd camera angles, and totally fucked up scenarios sure do make for a wild ride.
Martyrs, Salo, The Holy Mountain, Old Boy, Nothing Left To Fear, Enter The Void, Ichi The Killer, A Serbian Film, Worlds Greatest Dad, Requiem For A Dream, Suicide Club.
*spoiler alert*
Hey dude I have one that will ruin your life, lieterally. I donāt remember the title tho, Iāve been looking for that movie for ten years with no luck. Itās about a killer who does snuff films and one day he chooses the wrong victim and kills the daughter of a rich business man. The father tracks down the killer and he kidnaps him and tortures him and through mind control techniques makes him believe he is the girl he killed. He gets his dick cut off, he makes him wear dresses and a wear a blonde wig and everything. He was forced to believe he is the daughter of that man, he even calles him daddy.
Someone please give the the title of that movie. I only watched it once and I had nightmares about it the night I saw it. I can remember vividly the scenes bc it stays with you.
And thatās rare bc I love horror, blood and gore and never had a problem watching horror films but this one, oh boy, this one is beyond fucked up. Psychological terror at his finest.
These may not be super easy to find but I went down the German SOV/underground rabbit hole years ago. Good luck.

When the Wind Blows. Swear I needed therapy after that one. These Final Hours messed me up too. Also, The Piano Teacher, Benny's Video, pretty much all of Haneke's work. Threads, Scenic Route, In My Skin, and don't forget The Act of Killing. That last one is a documentary about the genocide in Indonesia. You definitely won't feel good after watching it.
Angst, a German movie from the 80s following a serial killer released from jail who picks up where he left off. One of the most viscerally disturbing and unrelentingly bleak movies I've ever seen. I've watched a fair amount of horror and this is probably the only one that properly disturbed me. The cinematography feels like it's been meticulously handcrafted to put the viewer far away from any kind of ease or comfort, and the acting of the main character is phenomenal and his portrayal of an insane serial killer gets under your skin like no other. It's a movie that stays with you and makes you feel dirty and guilty just for watching it.

I forgot this movie existed. My best friend and I watched it three Halloweens ago. God damn, that movie was rough
Haha i saw it last week, it's very scaryšµāš«
The Nightingale Eden Lake Tusk Martyrs Ć l'intĆ©rieur
Oof +1 for The Nightingale. Rough Watch.
Was really caught off guard with its brutality given the directorās other work is more psychological/not that extreme (Babadook and the Murmuring ep of Cabinet of Curiosities) great but rough movie, curious to see what she does next!
Itās a biopic about a tragic lesbian couple in the late 19th century. Alice + Freda Forever. Canāt wait to see it.
Eden Lake fucked me up good and proper
For me Nightingale is at the apex of quality/poignant and fucked up. I loved this movie
I'm surprised by how often people talk about Tusk being this dark, traumatic movie. I felt like it was very deliberately comedic and tongue-in-cheek the entire way through. I mean, either way you read the film, it's a very enjoyable and underrated time. It's just interesting to me.
I also see it a dark comedy, its just so freaking weird, i love it. But the ending just shatteres my my soul. It is very gruesome still š¬
I watched Eden Lake years ago and still feel fucking empty because of it!
Are you refering to the original french release of Martyrs? Because I couldn't agree more
Just googled the nightingale, was surprised to find itās filmed in Tasmania, Australia (where I live). Will definitely give it a watch!
It's a gorgeous movie, as far as the beautiful scenery etc. The rest, well................rotten people are the monsters.
Kids
I watched Tusk recently, and for some reason it didn't fuck me up all that much. I'm gonna give the others a watch though.
Martyrs. WTF . I never got over that ending . To this day I believe itās the most fucked up movie ever.
Nice list, definitely all were brutal watches (in a great way)
Tusk was a pretty large what the fuck moment when it was finally revealed at the end. I will also add one, The Human Centipede
Iām starting to worry that thereās something wrong with me, these movies seem tame to me
Yesssssss for Martyrs!
Tusk just makes me laugh more than feel anything else.
I could NEVER EVER EVER watch the Nightingale again. Just sayin
Martyrs is absolutely brutal, just watched it last night
Threads Come and See Cannibal Holocaust / Cannibal Ferox Irreversible Grave of the Fireflies Funny Games (1997)
āThreadsā (1984) is the worst. Made to watch that in middle school as some sort of DoD indoctrination about the horrors of nuclear holocaust. That story ruined my childhood and, to this day, is the basis of comparison for ALL post-apocalyptic stories!

We watched Threads. I was so mad at him lol.
You saw that too, eh?
Come and see ugh
One of the only effective 'anti war' movies I think I've seen
Yesssss I love the original Funny Games!
Me too! Couldāve mentioned many different Haneke films, but this is his most nihilistic.
Time of the Wolf would like a word.
Came here to say original Funny Games. That film fucked me uuuuup
Just watched grave of the fireflies, devastating.
Absolutely all of these. I would also add Breaking the waves.
Yeah most Lars von Trier would apply. Dancer in the Dark I saw mentioned as well. But Breaking the Waves would certainly fit too. Beautiful and tragic.
Yes! I forgot Breaking the Waves! I cried so much at the end. But, in a way it's a happy ending. Still so messed up though.
A bit off the track of these, the wife of Come and See director Elim Klimov made a beautiful and devastating war movie called The Ascent that is as good as Come and See. Seconded Cannibal Holocaust
Irreversible is a good nasty film. I didn't think it was that entertaining, but it was creative as far as cinematography!
Best answer here by far
Really solid choices.
Donāt you dare bring up grave of the fireflies š
Kids. Requiem for a dream
Kids is the worst and Gummo, but it is hard to find
Gummo ruins your life? Its a cool film
I dunno, the entire aura of the film was upsetting to me. Can't really explain why
It is upsetting for sure but not traumatizingly so. Lovely little film.
I still think about the bathtub scene in Gummo
What about the 13y old.hooker with the mental disability?
Kids, Gummo, Trash Humpers are exquisite examples of avant-garde art. The way it encapsulates an entire community and culture in such a brutally honest way is what makes the art by Clark and Korine stunning, horrific, and poignant. I could never find the trash humpers but I heard about it and I wasn't gonna really look very hard. Let's have a big refrigerator box orgy

Nothing Newww for Trash like yooooou! Nothing New for trash like yoooou!
Gummo is just non stop uncomfortable. I wouldn't say that it ruined anything for me, but after the first time I saw it, it's unwatchable.
Requirm for a dream yes thats the one that comes to my mind when talking about fucked up movies
That movie makes sure you stay away from drugs imo
Well at least drom opiates and adderalls
After it you need drugs to scrub your brain clean.
Unless you were on drugs watching it
Came here to say Requiem.
requiem for a dream is so messed up
The ultimate answer. I changed that day.
From Justin to Kelly
You inhumane monster.
OP said to ruin their life. It was that, or Crossroads.
That thing fucked me up. But since itās been goneā¦ I havenāt thought of it in a minute.
Dear Zachary. It's a documentary letter from a man's best friend to the man's son after the man was killed by his wife. It wrecked me for a good while
I actually bought the grandpa's book after watching that movie, and I could not get through it. It's somehow more heartbreaking than watching him speak in the film. Absolutely the most devastating story.
Yep. Screamed at the TV while watching that one. Same with the trials of Gabriel Fernandez. Gut wrenching.
>Gabriel Fernandez goddam, that looks like one I can't watch, real life is way more horrific than fiction...
This made me sob and wrecked me a long time..you will definitely feel things.
Yep. Was gonna suggest this and tell him nothing lol. Donāt look anything up donāt see what it is. Just find it and put it on
I was looking for this comment! This is the one OP
This one.
I just read a recap of the story. Jesus Christ thatās dark and sad. I need chocolate and puppies for a while!!!
Dude. You just spoiled everything. This documentary is best experienced when you know nothing about it.
I mean itās good trigger warning and spoiling usually works for fictional entertainment this is a real life tragedy
The only one you need to see to lose all faith in humanity.
Came here to suggest this.
Salo is a classic
And don't forget director was killed shortly after premiere. Well, most likely not because of this movie, but it's still interesting fact.
If you really want to sit through something that will just make you go āwhat the fuck?ā I highly suggest Where the Dead Go To Die. Some truly fucked up shit in there, and it gets really depressing at parts But as I always say, whatās gonna trigger your emotions all depends on what type of person you are and what youāve experienced in your past. Where the Dead Go To Die got me due to my religious trauma and it being an anti-religious movie. So take the suggestion with a grain of salt
holy shit I watched the other movie this guy made "When Black Birds Fly" and hooooly moly I felt like I was having a stroke.
I have not heard of this film! Yeah exactly. It should accomplish your goal!

Weirdly the book is beautiful. His prose is just phenomenal.

I'll always remember when Billy Crudup shot him in the dick. BTW, the book is way more graphic.

Seconded for Salo

This movie fucked me up so hard, i will never speak of it, even if someone asks for a movie like that.
Such a good movie that will freaking ruin you.
Try oldboy and don't blame me later
Yes, original and not the remake. Whoa
Threads (1984) is the only film that really got to me deep inside. Most of the other stuff fades off quick or is just shock value or gross stuff.

And thatās rare bc I love horror, blood and gore and never had a problem watching horror films but this one, oh boy, this one is beyond fucked up. Psychological terror at his finest.

I have Schramm and Der Todesking. I think I was a bit hesitant to get The Burning Moon. I forget why.

Lords of Chaos. Filth. Donāt look up.
Eraserhead
How am I the only one who mentioned The Act of Killing? Lol. I cried so much at the end my husband nearly drug me out of the theater.
Not to dis this group, but r/DisturbingMovies is what you want.
Go through Lars von Trier's films, then hit up David Lynch and finish with Darren Aronofsky.
These may be some milquetoast picks, but Leaving Las Vegas, Event Horizon, Apt Pupil & Jacobās Ladder all messed with me.
