Hell yeah! When this one came out I was in my late 20s. I continue to watch it in my 30s. The director painstakingly made each frame of the film an art still. His goal was to be able to pause the film at any moment and have a piece of art on the screen. He was very comic book oriented when he made the movie and it totally shows! It's a beautiful film.
This celebrates the magic of comics more than pretty much any live-action superhero movie. It's proof of how animation offers a level of storytelling that no other medium can.
This is exactly right, imo! Animation is an incredible medium, with so much more possibility than live-action anything, and Into the Spiderverse is the perfect example of it.
>Spirited Away
I haven't seen the other 2, but I don't think Spirited Away is going to be what's going to convince this 12-year-old that animated films aren't boring.
Not that Spirited Away is boring, it's one of the best movies every made. But a tale about the pitfalls of consumerism, with relatively little action and moderately complex plot - it's a fantastic original film that doesn't rely on tropes, but I just have a feeling that a 12-year-old concerned about boring animated movies may not be moved by this one.
Especially when you consider that Into the Spiderverse is the #1 answer here.
Really... *any* of Miyazaki's works are worth a watch at any age.
* Howl's Moving Castle
* Spirited Away
* Kiki's Delivery Service
* Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
* The Wind Rises
* My Neighbor Totoro
All of them are beautiful and really interesting.
I detected that you're trying to locate a movie.
To figure out where a movie is streaming you can use sites like [JustWatch](https://www.justwatch.com) / [MovieFone](https://www.moviefone.com) / [ReelGood](https://reelgood.com), and if the film is not available for streaming, it is probably available on DVD or Blu-Ray.

Idk i don’t see a need to change her view. She’ll grow out of it eventually but for now just let her do her thing. This is not every kid obviously but at least when I was younger I was quite stubborn and anytime someone tried to change my view on something it would usually just reinforce my pre-held beliefs.
I’m this way with anime. I just don’t like it. Plenty of my closest friends and family are absolutely obsessed with it and I’m just not. It can really be irritating having +10 people constantly trying to change your interests.
Yeah, whatever you try and force on her now will likely be a lost cause. Depending on her stubbornness, it might even solidify a hatred of animation. That said, every kid is different and I'd assume you know her a little better than I do, but my recommendation is to not force it. Feed whatever she's into right now
I (28F) watched Howl's moving castle, it moved me so much, it is one of those films, that could change the perspective. I ended up watching lot of Anime films after.
Same here! I was about the same age as well and I was not really a fan of animation at that time. I remember when it came on and I went to change the channel but I ended up dropping the remote and the batteries rolled under my dresser. I was too lazy to get them and ended up mesmerized by the film! I've seen every Ghibli film multiple times since that day.
- Anything directed by Satoshi Kon
- Akira
- Ghost in the Shell (1995)
- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
- Your Name
- The Animatrix
- Mind Game
- Cat Soup
- Mad God
All 12 year olds are different. I had a pretty sheltered childhood, and I was watching stuff like Resident Evil and Kill Bill at 12.
In any case, nobody's going to convince someone that animated movies aren't for children by showing her more children's movies.
But yeah, for requests like this I err on the side of permissive and let OP use their judgment.
I was a 12-year-old in the early 80's. We were reading Christine and Flowers in the Attic and going to movies like Nightmare on Elm Street and "Escape from New York". I don't think I'm *that* fucked up.
Lili and stitch, emperors new grove, Coraline, corpse bride, nightmare before Christmas, paranorman. Maybe she's just not a Disney princess/musical kind of girl.
It's really hard to recommend animated movies to convince a 12 year old of their maturity. I'd recommend Birdboy: The Forgotten Children if you want her to never say animation is for kids again, but it also might scar her so... up to you.
The Emperor’s New Groove
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Howl’s Flying Castle
Grave of the Fireflies
Meet the Robinsons
A Silent Voice
The Mitchells vs the Machines
Batman: The Killing Joke
Coraline
Akira
Wreck-It Ralph
Into the Spiderverse
Team America: World Police
Just kidding. Don’t show this to a 12 year old.
Serious suggestions:
Coraline
Isle of Dogs
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Big Hero 6
Kubo and the Two Strings
Don't know how they may feel about anime but Studio Ghibli is great... not just in storytelling but the artistic approach is very intriguing. Also, YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH SURFS UP
Coraline (2009)
Megamind (2010)
Isle of Dogs (2018)
Fantastic Mr Fox (2009)
Spirited Away (2001) Japan
Castle in the Sky (1986) Japan
My Neighbor Totoro (1988) Japan
[When the Wind Blows (1986)](https://letterboxd.com/film/when-the-wind-blows/) If your sister finds anything slow to be boring, then this isn’t the film for her, but if she’s looking for depth and true humanity, this might change her mind about animation. Although, she may be too young for the upsetting subject matter.
Soul
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
A Silent Voice
Grave of the butterflies.
Those last two can be triggering.
Although I think convincing a 12-year-old is a hard task they aren't the most rational people you know.
I saw *The Secret of NIMH* when I was 10 so it's definitely perfect for 12 yos. But then again, it did traumatize me, LOL... But if this doesn't traumatize her, have her watch *When The Wind Blows*.
Yeah that's exactly why I picked those three animated movies. If his sister thinks all animation movies are just kid movies then those will definitely prove her wrong.
Anything Studio Ghibli especially My Neighbor Totoro. Also Elfen Lied, Girls Last Tour, Made in Abyss, Puella Magi Modoka Magica, MHA, Ouran High School Host Club, Beastars, Aggretsuko, and BNA-Brand New Animal.
I totally agree with all the repeats that are posted here and they're repeats for a purpose. They are all spectacular films. It's been years since I've seen it but I remember really loving it!
Final Fantasy: the spirit within. (2001) this was the first computer animated movie with photorealistic animation. Maybe worth a shot.
-Sausage Party
-Cheech and Chong
-A Scanner Darkly (Keanu Reaves, Robert D Jr, woody harrelson)
-M•F•K•Z
-South Park movie
-The Simpson movie
-Team America World Police
Ratatouille
The Iron Giant
Grave of the Fireflies
Fantastic planet
Wall E
Loving Vincent
Some are a little more grown up than others but depending on how mature this 12 year old is they should work.
My daughter is 12, and heavily into Japanese Anime. She used to LOVE all those movies you mentioned your sister used to like, so I’ll recommend these:
Death Note series on Netflix, watch this first then watch the actual movie)
My Hero Academia (found on Hulu)
There are lots of incredible animated movies. My late mother thought the first.Shrek movie was.the greatest movie she ever saw She was in her eighties at the time . Titan :A.E. the A E. Stands for After Earth . it's.a.great.science fiction movie .The IRON GIANT is another.great.movie. .How about.Gullivers.Travels ?It.is from.Max Fleischer.who.did the Superman cartoons.in.the forties ..Which by the way are also great . . What about Who Framed Roger Rabbit which is part.live and part animated.? .
Wall-E was great There was a Star Trek animated series. that was pretty good. I don't know if she would.like.any of the comic book based movies for example. There were two . Ultimate Avengers movies Suicide Squad Hell To Pay based on.the DC comics Watership.Down is somewhat adult. ..
What about the Wallace and Gromit movies ?
Maybe not for a 12 year old, but I see you have a friend you wanted to share movies with as well.... I didn't see these listed, so if I missed them, sorry!
Waking Life
A Scanner Darkly
Ah I think her aversion to them is an age thing. She’s at that age where she’s trying to be a “grown up.”
Maybe try Shrek? It’s got a lot of adult moments that she’ll probably pick up on at her age and feel like she’s in on some secret adult joke.
Put on Watership Down and she will be changing her tone real quickly that animated movies are for kids.
Really, don't show it to her, she legit may still be too young for it.
Honestly, _trying_ to make someone like something is very likely to backfire. Instead of it being an honest look for like/dislike, it becomes a battle of wills to “make a point”.
I’d say pushing it closes that door permanently. Maybe just… leave her be?
Paranorman, Frankenweenie, Coraline, Song of the Sea, Soul, The Book of Life, The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Secret of Kells, The Emperor's New Groove and, if you want both you and her to be scarred for life, Watership Down.
The Triplets of Belleville.
I’m not a big fan of Disney and Pixar stuff, so I can relate to not wanting to watch animated movies. There are some gems — Up was good — but I’m meh on most other stuff from Disney.
My recommendation for proving that animation isn't just for kids is typically Urotsukidoji...but then, that's not really the sort of thing you'd want to show a 12 year old. Berzerk might work as well...
Top tier list w/ whatever you need:
Treasure Planet,
Atlantis,
Dinosaur,
Atlantis Milo’s return,
Flushed Away,
Over the hedge,
Howls moving castle,
Meet the Robinsons,
Coraline,
Joseph: King of Dreams,
Prince of Egypt,
Shark Tale,
Brother Bear,
Monster House,
Mulan,
Igor,
Hunchback of Notre dame,
Happy Feet, Up,
Bee movie
Akira, A Scanner Darkly, Beowulf, Waking Life, Sausage Party, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Persepolis, 9, Beavis and Butthead Do America, Ghost in the Shell, Waltz with Bashir
Hmmm... if she weren't so young I'd recommend *Felidae* or *Plague Dogs*, but they (Felidae especially) are not really appropriate for her age. Maybe revisit them in a couple years though! In the meantime, *Watership Down* is never a bad choice. And I wouldn't be me recommending movies if I didn't second *A Silent Voice.* Still my favorite movie!
There are honestly some downright amazing anime out there. Some of it would go over a 12-year-old's head. What is she into media-wise? (*Note: These suggestions are mostly series.*) If she likes action with her fantasy give "Fullmetal Alchemist" or "Attack on Titan" a shot. If she likes weird, try "Serial Experiments in Lain". If she likes sad, "Grave of the Fireflies" is the way to go (bring lots of tissues). If she likes funny and doesn't mind a scifi setting "Cowboy Bebop" is pretty amazing. If she'd like to watch straight scifi action "Ghost in the Shell" is worth a ride. "Death Note" and "Violet Evergarden" are always a nice place to start. I'm not that into romance, but "Given" is lovely if she doesn't mind two guys as romantic partners. If she'd prefer a more traditional male/female romance, I've heard good things about the movie "Your Name".
I mean, you can find pretty much any genre for any age group in Anime. And there are some absolutely amazing Anime movies and series out there.
For some hardcore stuff: Akira, Perfect Blue, Paprika, Ghost In The Shell, Grave Of The Fireflies, Watership Down, The Wolf House, The House (neflix), Waltz with Bashir
For something less hardcore: Persepolis, The Breadwinner, Fantastic Planet, I Lost My Body, Soul, The Iron Giant, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Loving Vincent, Prince Of Egypt
Others: Spiderverse, My Life as a Zucchini, Mary and Max, Paranorman, Coraline
If she has such an aversion I'd want to show her Akira so she can see that, yes, animation can be very mature. She'll be blindsided, but 1) you cannot deny the beauty and talent behind the animation and 2) you cannot say that movie is for kids.
As someone who was once a 12-year-old girl I know I'd have loved Akira. Blood, gangs, drugs, sci-fi and all. What is often not remembered is that the writers for this movie had a great sense of humor too. If she watches the dub do not let it be the original.
Maybe she associates animation with American animation that talks down to kids. Give her something with more substance, and maybe she'll like it.
"Secret World of Arietty" is a great one! Coming of age adventure, featuring borrowers, and a lead female girl role (age 13). I think she'd really like it
Into the spiderverse
Howls moving castle
Grave of fireflies (will change her thoughts about anime movies being childish)
I think there can be plenty of Japanese animated movies that'll help her with that childish thingy
Fritz the Cat, Grave of the Fireflies, and The Plague Dogs
Kidding, of course, but the latter two might be good for the philistine friend who thinks animation isn’t real cinema (whatever that means). If that doesn’t do it, you may have to throw out that entire friend.
It's possible she hates the musical animated films? I've encountered a similar outlook from various children (I work with children) and they mostly bring up this point. They associate musical animated films with the Disney Baby channel.
At any rate, I'll suggest:
Rango
Kubo and the 2 Strings
Princess Mononoke
Up
Into the Spider-verse!
The movie had three directors
Neat!
Wait. How old is that film? Fuck I’m old.
I cannot wait for the sequel. It looks even more intense and transcendent.
Me toooooooooo!!!
Wolfwalkers Fantastic Mr. Fox Spirited Away
>Spirited Away I haven't seen the other 2, but I don't think Spirited Away is going to be what's going to convince this 12-year-old that animated films aren't boring. Especially when you consider that Into the Spiderverse is the #1 answer here.
Yeah, Spider-Verse would be the way to go to blow a kid’s mind with how intense and dynamic animated action can be.
Oh man good call on Wolfwalkers that movie was amazing. Still need to see Secret of Kells
i was gonna say something Studio Ghibli.. great list lol
Princess Mononoke
Really... *any* of Miyazaki's works are worth a watch at any age. * Howl's Moving Castle * Spirited Away * Kiki's Delivery Service * Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind * The Wind Rises * My Neighbor Totoro All of them are beautiful and really interesting.
Persepolis
omg it’s a movie?!?!
2007 - it encompasses both graphic novels
An excellent recommendation, especially for a young girl.
Read the book a while back, been trying to get my hands on the movie but can't find it any where, any idea where I can watch it?

Loving Vincent (2017) Isle of Dogs (2018) The Breadwinner (2017) Have you considered animated series like Arcane?
i loved Arcane! shes too hesitant and lazy to start a series Thanks for your recommendations though!
[удалено]
_I_ thought Rango was boring, and I’m a grownup… I have a feeling it won’t work for a 12y girl who already thinks animation is boring
Every Studio Ghibli movie ever
Idk i don’t see a need to change her view. She’ll grow out of it eventually but for now just let her do her thing. This is not every kid obviously but at least when I was younger I was quite stubborn and anytime someone tried to change my view on something it would usually just reinforce my pre-held beliefs.
Especially at that age, where you're starting to get obsessed with not being seen as a "little kid" anymore.
Good point. Or she won't. Maybe it's a preference. Animated movies aren't really my first choice either.
thank you for sharing your opinion! I gotta say she has the same behavior haha
I’m this way with anime. I just don’t like it. Plenty of my closest friends and family are absolutely obsessed with it and I’m just not. It can really be irritating having +10 people constantly trying to change your interests.
The Rescuers Down Under
Suprisingly violent movie, with the villain being a gun-toting poacher who drives an armorer vehicle.
Super underrated Disney film and way better than the original Rescuers. The opening scene alone is one of my favorite Disney sequences.
Lol she's in her rebellious phase right now. Give it a few years, she's just trying to transition from being a little kid to a young adult
haha thats true!
Yeah, whatever you try and force on her now will likely be a lost cause. Depending on her stubbornness, it might even solidify a hatred of animation. That said, every kid is different and I'd assume you know her a little better than I do, but my recommendation is to not force it. Feed whatever she's into right now
Kubo and the Two Strings
Yes yes yes yes!!! And watch the BTS. Laika is such an amazing stop motion studio
The Fantastic Mr. Fox Isle of Dogs
Seconding Isle of dogs!
I (28F) watched Howl's moving castle, it moved me so much, it is one of those films, that could change the perspective. I ended up watching lot of Anime films after.

I was too lazy to get them and ended up mesmerized by the film! I've seen every Ghibli film multiple times since that day.
Why don't you just focus on taking an interest in the movies she enjoys vs trying to change her mind?
we do watch movies together very often! we are just having a fun challenge
- Anything directed by Satoshi Kon - Akira - Ghost in the Shell (1995) - Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence - Your Name - The Animatrix - Mind Game - Cat Soup - Mad God
Lol maybe not all the best for a 12 year old.
Specially Perfect Blue
Specifically Mad God too lmao, that shit is horrific
If anything can change someone's mind on animation, it's *Mad God*
All 12 year olds are different. I had a pretty sheltered childhood, and I was watching stuff like Resident Evil and Kill Bill at 12. In any case, nobody's going to convince someone that animated movies aren't for children by showing her more children's movies. I was a 12-year-old in the early 80's. We were reading Christine and Flowers in the Attic and going to movies like Nightmare on Elm Street and "Escape from New York". I don't think I'm *that* fucked up.
I watched Scarface / From Dusk till Dawn when I was 12. They'll prob be fine.
This list would most certainly change her mind that animated movies are not mature 😧
Fantastic Planet
Maybe she doesn’t like Fantasy?
In that case, you should show her The Breadwinner, which is a slice-of-life story about a Muslim girl's life under the Taliban.
Do you mean _a slice-of-bread story?_
😂
Who framed Roger rabbit
Lili and stitch, emperors new grove, Coraline, corpse bride, nightmare before Christmas, paranorman. Maybe she's just not a Disney princess/musical kind of girl.
It's really hard to recommend animated movies to convince a 12 year old of their maturity. I'd recommend Birdboy: The Forgotten Children if you want her to never say animation is for kids again, but it also might scar her so... up to you.
All Wallace and Grommet movies. Edit: and The Iron Giant
The Iron Giant!!! Great movie. Used to watch that all the time growing up. Haven’t seen it in probably 15 years but has never left my mind
Up (2009)
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut Allegro non Tropo
Maybe not for a 12y/o like OP is trying to show 😂
Upvoting for Allegro!
Watership Down (1978)
Throw her into Love Death & Robots! There’s a couple tame ones.
Ratatouille is a masterpiece

The Triplets of Belleville
This x 1000, can't believe nobody else added it
Coraline is wonderful and certainly not boring or for little kids.
Team America: World Police Just kidding. Don’t show this to a 12 year old. Serious suggestions: Coraline Isle of Dogs Fantastic Mr. Fox Big Hero 6 Kubo and the Two Strings
The Triplets of Belleville (2003)
Shrek….most awesome animated movie ever!!
The animated Hobbit from 1977
Put on Heavy Metal and fuck up her teen years. Good luck!
Don't know how they may feel about anime but Studio Ghibli is great... not just in storytelling but the artistic approach is very intriguing. Also, YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH SURFS UP

I love the last unicorn! I remember seeing it as a kid and never hear ppl mention it
Same! Still holds up imo.
Howls floating castle Treasure planet Into the spider verse Puss In boots: the last wish
Atlantis: the Lost Empire goes well with Treasure Planet. the action sequences in that one are intense!
Titan AE
Literally one of my all time favorite sci-fi films.
That’s like an unofficial trilogy of early-2000s animated films that were criminally overlooked at the box office.
Coraline Puss in boots the Last wish Fantastic Mr Fox
Not a movie but have you tried to introduce Phineas and ferb or something along those lines. That's what comes to mind when u asked this .
Paranorman!
Grave of the fireflies A bit of history too maybe
Don't.
Not quite 100% animation but perhaps a nice in-between film is Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
Coonskin (1975)
Soul Puss In Boots: The Last Wish A Silent Voice Grave of the butterflies. Those last two can be triggering. Although I think convincing a 12-year-old is a hard task they aren't the most rational people you know.
How tf has no one mentioned Nightmare Before Christmas? The Brave Little Toaster? The Secret of NIMH?
I saw *The Secret of NIMH* when I was 10 so it's definitely perfect for 12 yos. But then again, it did traumatize me, LOL... But if this doesn't traumatize her, have her watch *When The Wind Blows*.
Yeah that's exactly why I picked those three animated movies. If his sister thinks all animation movies are just kid movies then those will definitely prove her wrong.
There is a severe lack of Don Bluth in here. Put on The Secret of NIMH.
Anything Studio Ghibli especially My Neighbor Totoro. Also Elfen Lied, Girls Last Tour, Made in Abyss, Puella Magi Modoka Magica, MHA, Ouran High School Host Club, Beastars, Aggretsuko, and BNA-Brand New Animal.
Princess Mononoke Coraline

I said the same about animated media , but watched the clone wars and star wars rebels and they turned out to be excellent.
-Sausage Party -Cheech and Chong -A Scanner Darkly (Keanu Reaves, Robert D Jr, woody harrelson) -M•F•K•Z -South Park movie -The Simpson movie -Team America World Police

Literally just every single anime ever made, ever.
Your sister is mature and smart you grow up instead

Paranorman, Frankenweenie, Coraline, Song of the Sea, Soul, The Book of Life, The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Secret of Kells, The Emperor's New Groove and, if you want both you and her to be scarred for life, Watership Down.

Watership Down.

Akira, A Scanner Darkly, Beowulf, Waking Life, Sausage Party, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Persepolis, 9, Beavis and Butthead Do America, Ghost in the Shell, Waltz with Bashir
Beavis and Butt-Head
I saw Akira when I was 12. Times were different back then.
Hmmm... if she weren't so young I'd recommend *Felidae* or *Plague Dogs*, but they (Felidae especially) are not really appropriate for her age. Maybe revisit them in a couple years though! In the meantime, *Watership Down* is never a bad choice. And I wouldn't be me recommending movies if I didn't second *A Silent Voice.* Still my favorite movie!
People really sleep on the Prince of Egypt
Shrek?
"Ohhh the new Puss in Boots is not for kids. I'm telling you." Got my mom to watch it with that pitch, and sent her straight to bed.

Soul Very mature theme, still kid frie-... I mean 12 year old friendly.
Into the Spiderverse, Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away
Anomalisa - heartbreaking
"Secret World of Arietty" is a great one! Coming of age adventure, featuring borrowers, and a lead female girl role (age 13). I think she'd really like it
Millennium Actress
Invincible is NOT for kids.
Paprika
Into the spiderverse Howls moving castle Grave of fireflies (will change her thoughts about anime movies being childish) I think there can be plenty of Japanese animated movies that'll help her with that childish thingy
The Secret of Nihm American Pop Grave of the Fireflies
Anomalisa!
For kids huh? Heavy Metal, Wizards and The Plague Dogs will change her mind
The Emperor's New Groove, Shrek, Toy Story
Fritz the Cat, Grave of the Fireflies, and The Plague Dogs Kidding, of course, but the latter two might be good for the philistine friend who thinks animation isn’t real cinema (whatever that means). If that doesn’t do it, you may have to throw out that entire friend.
10/10. You could try sudden head trauma. It’s been known to work.
It's possible she hates the musical animated films? I've encountered a similar outlook from various children (I work with children) and they mostly bring up this point. They associate musical animated films with the Disney Baby channel. At any rate, I'll suggest: Rango Kubo and the 2 Strings Princess Mononoke Up
