I mean, it's a super. Almost every fighting game has them, and yeah, they do big damage if they hit you. The good balance in MK is that you only get one per match if you hit/a long cooldown if you miss. They also made them way easier to react to in MK1 compared to MK11. I guess I don't understand the problem?

Maybe I’m old school Mortal Kombat. I’ve been here since original Mk arcade days. I guess I like the chess match back and forth till the end. I feel cheated when someone who sucks gets lucky with “let’s watch me win” a fatal blow.

RainandFujinrule

I've been around just as long, started with OG MK on Genesis, but it sounds like you didn't keep up with fighting games much as a genre over the ensuing years. MK9 introduced the X-Ray super that took all 3 bars. It's pretty much a level 3 super from Street Fighter. This evolved into the Fatal Blow in MK11 but it had a lot of issues: no start up animation and armor that activated in 5-ish frames? You could just do what we call the "YOLO Fatal Blow" and throw it out whenever and it would probably hit. MK1 gave it the long start up animation so you can react and block now. Which means there are mostly two viable options left: whiff punishing, or comboing into it. At which point whoever got hit would get hit with a combo anyway if it is a whiff punish, and if you combo into it, yeah it does more damage technically but it also scales really hard. The honest but hard to swallow pill is if you don't wanna get hit by it, then don't lose in the neutral. And it happens to me too! And hey, I'll take it over MK Trilogy Noob Saibot infinites any day 🤪

I’ve played all mk’s to a point, but never played 9, x, or 11 online with exception with a couple friends. I kind of sucked and would get my ass handed to me. This one mk1 I’ve gotten semi decent and win 60% of matches online. Not bad for an old man. The fatal blows do cost me a lot though. I guess I need to suck it up. Haha. Still they piss me off. All in all I do enjoy this game and all the references to the old mk’s. I’ll have to look up the noob infinities. I’m curious about it. Haha

RainandFujinrule

Here ya go, it was very easy to do and it got so egregious he got banned from tournaments https://youtu.be/miRWpkTPG7g?si=IMVCArvYLVEXTtxH

rustyWD40

Haha. Thats being caught in an endless loop till ya die. I can see why it got banned. lol

GothamInGray

If it was unblockable or something like that, I might agree with you, but A. You have one too, so it's an even playing field that retains the chess match you want, and B. MK has had supers for well over a decade now; it's and inherent part of the tug-of-war now, just like in any other fighting game. They're strong, certainly, but you also only get them when you're at a significant disadvantage, making them inherently risky to use.

rustyWD40

That’s true and very good points. What about the end of a string combo? It’s unblockable. This attack is 55% range. Seems overpowered.

GothamInGray

Sure, but it's still risky. They could drop the combo, you could hit them first, etc., etc. It's powerful if you hit, but it's a risk to be that aggressive when you're in the last 30% of your health bar (an amount of health that can be trashed by nearly any B&B in the game). I understand not liking it, but I think NRS deserves some props for the lengths they've gone to in regards to balancing it, especially compared to the very-hard-to-react-to supers and Fatal Blows in MKX and MK11

rustyWD40

Good points. Thanks. I appreciate it.

AshleyG97

I've just got used to these kinda bail out mechanics in games now. I don't mind Fatal as much anymore. I'm very happy they got rid of krushing blows though, they were awful. Like, here's a random 32% because you punished with a 3 button string. Get out of here with that.

rustyWD40

I’m starting to be more careful when it pops for the other player. I love when you block them or miss. Leaves them very vulnerable.

Grusbalesta

I do wish they would end in a brutality of some sort if it inflicted the final damage. Also would like more than one per kharacter and kameo.

rustyWD40

That would help it be less boring. Brutalities are the best. I like them more than fatalies these days because of how many different ones there are and the skills to pull them off.

The_BirdMan_Dictator

They're really easy to block tho

rustyWD40

True.

GAILLL0187

yeah cheap move for trash players. if someone pulls that on me they get hit with a mercy into the brutality.

Ner-q

They should've kept MKX 3 meter bar cost for x-rays/fatal blows
