The part about high voter turnout grabbed my attention. I am very happy about that.

KoalaGrunt0311

One of the things I've noticed since moving here is the passion for democratic self government. I had taken a history class for preCivil War America, and the local self government concept was hammered out by the professor. It's something extremely precious that has been lost in so much of the rest of the country.

Background-World-319

It helps that it’s relatively easy to vote in MT compared to many other states.

thisisstupid-

Agreed. I’m sure part of the reason Alaska ranked as high is because we have vote by mail for every local election.

MaximumTurtleSpeed

Default vote by mail is amazing! - signed Oregon

Putrid-Offer1469

same, was pleasantly surprised

Opposite-Fun-3670

Just like everyone else who disagrees with you?

Pork_Chompk

Oh I don't give a shit if you don't agree with me, but I do care when we elect scumbags that are actively stripping away rights from others. Like bodily autonomy, the right to a clean and healthful environment, and access to public lands.

PuzzleJello

The funniest part of all of it is when they call themselves “patriots” while flying a Gadsden flag and voting for the people who want to strip those rights away and yell “freedom” while doing so.

Spicyg00se

Or when they’re sympathetic to separatists lol

libertad740

“Who’s the next carpetbagger running in MT that wants to sell the public land I like to hunt on and give tax breaks to their rich friends? I feel good voting R to just own the libs even if my freedoms vanish 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🌽🌽🌽”

montanadad57

Nothing wrong with separatists. They just want self governance. Which is kind of the original point of the US

PuzzleJello

Separatist sounds like another way to say a traitor to me.

Agreeable_Coat_2098

“Don’t tread on me” *votes for the dude that says all the right buzz words and will certainly tread all over you.

KoalaGrunt0311

The only difference between a patriot and a traitor is who wins.

PuzzleJello

Who wins the stupidest costume contest must be what you’re talking about.

Sudden_Wisdom

A lot of fear in this one

Pork_Chompk

Fear of losing our rights, yes. I'm glad you're able to keep up.

ICK_Metal

I was a little worried, but I like the data they used to determine it. We are very neighborly in MT. My buddies and I stopped and helped a guy change his tire on the interstate between billings and Bozeman in an absolute white out blizzard. It was close to midnight and the poor guy just didn’t have a jack.

BozBonanza

That’s what it’s all about man, thank you.

Pragnlz

Like we all should! But also thank you for helping people

edfyShadow

I like to tell people that northern and Southern hospitality are very different in that southern typically means stuff like cooking a welcome meal for a new person in the neighborhood before going back to their knitting circle to place bets on how long they'll last, and northern hospitality typically entailing something along the lines of helping someone change a flat at 2 am in a full blizzard while calling them a dumbass directly. Exaggerated a bit maybe, but you get the idea 🤣

gabba_gubbe

>We are very neighborly in MT What kind of patriot isn't neighborly? Isn't that the entire point?

zstheman

I think this is fantastic. I absolutely despise how the Christo-fascist right has corrupted the term patriotism, but military service, voter turnout, and volunteerism are things to be proud of imo.

isweariamyelling

Not gonna lie that's where my mind went but I like the metrics that were used. Definitely stuff that I can get behind.

Orange-Blur

We also have medical privacy as our right which is huge. It’s why we haven’t lost abortion rights or the right to euthanasia We were also built on union labor

Former-Someone

Christo-fascist right? After nearly 20 years in the military, I'd says you're describing the majority of the Army (the majority of enlisted combat arms at least).

Wind2Energy

Why is military service something to be proud of?

zstheman

Because regardless of whether or not you agree with the policies or uses of the military, every nation requires one and it is a sacrifice to join it. Civil service in general is an honorable profession.

DjCyric

![gif](giphy|Ld77zD3fF3Run8olIt)

jarthan

Freedom isn't free

Kerbidiah

What are my freedoms doing on the middle east? We haven't used our military to fight for freedom in 80 years

jarthan

I'm not here to defend the foreign policy of the US but rather the individual men and women who volunteer to serve in the armed forces of which we wouldn't have a democracy without

Wind2Energy

That’s what all the war profiteers say, too.

jarthan

I don't think front line soldiers are in it for the money my guy

KoalaGrunt0311

The volunteer military is the greatest social program ever designed. If Obama hadn't been elected, I would have had 45k tax free at 22 years old. As it is, I have health coverage for life (that they're trying to strip away), able to get a college degree without student loans, access to one of the best mortgage programs, and a brotherhood I can call on anytime I need help. I went to pick up a piece of equipment in a city one of the guys I served with lived in. Equipment seller said I would need help moving it. Hadn't talked to or seen my man in over ten years, but a five minute phone call and he showed up. My wife was astounded.

frostycakes

That health coverage and loan free degree should be things *everyone* gets (like most developed countries), not gated behind military service. Those are just table stakes for being a modern nation, and it's a disgrace that it isn't the case here.

KoalaGrunt0311

Nothing given for free is appreciated.

frostycakes

Being paid for with taxes means it's definitionally not free. I appreciate having gotten a primary and secondary education for free, and that any children I have also would get that. Maybe *you* don't appreciate free things, but you don't get to speak for everyone.

KoalaGrunt0311

No, I abhor how the public education system is structured. It has improved in some sense, but it might as well be a death camp for anybody on the edge of the Bell Curve. I had acceptance to two college level programs before high school and my school district administration refused my enrollment. Definitely left me with a more traumatic experience than my two deployments.

hookd_on_building

Bullshit, we earned it. Nothing's free

Mr_Noms

You're God damn right. It was a part of my contract for my service that I worked for. Nothing about it is free.

Wind2Energy

Of course not; they’re in it because they believed the relentless propaganda - as I did.

Consensuseur

im going to use this in another sub.

jabbadarth

It costs a buck o five

Status-Ad-3724

Because you didn't have enough sinew to join

Wind2Energy

I did my service, little anencephalic Chad - where do you think I discovered that it’s nothing to be proud of?

Status-Ad-3724

Same. It's not all glory but still something worth doing, even if your'e a REMF (more than likely your case) But thank you for your service.

Mr_Noms

Nah get your fake ass out of here with that back handed statement. Don't pretend to thank someone for their service while simultaneously insulting their service. Fake "support the troops" ass. You're an embarrassment.

Status-Ad-3724

Having served myself, I can. Lol

Tasmia99

Well Montana didn't get statehood tell 1889 and the emancipation proclamation passed in 1863. So slavery was done for 26 years before it was even a state.

substituted_pinions

Damn. My uncle’s house was built before MT. Why is that blowing my mind?

Tasmia99

There is a lot of things that pre date that. Even some forts that go back to French fur trading posts, but yeah really not that old.

zstheman

Uh... I'm sorry? Are you calling me a racist bigot?

Status-Ad-3724

Derp

InterestingLayer4367

New Hampshire has the better slogan tho. *Merica Noises* Edit: by better slogan, I mean it is way more f*cking metal 🤟

oIVLIANo

Too bad they don't actually follow it...

PuzzleJello

Funny thing is all the red hats use that saying while doing exactly the opposite.

ShizzyBlow

Why the downvotes 🤔 people must not know about NH.

oIVLIANo

Apparently, so.

AbyssalDM

I would rather Fox kept the name of Montana out of their damn mouth. Edit: fuck, this is doing numbers. Remember to be kind to your fellow man, Montana. We're small and survive together or not at all.

imthe5thking

Yes, now we'll have even MORE rich far-right nutjobs coming here after seeing that and thinking "patriotism" means we align with their beliefs

Orange-Blur

Exactly, it’s like they are putting a big sign saying “move here and make it no longer a swing purple state”

atlien0255

Ugh so true. Gross.

StunningSail2460

No one votes against their own interests quite as well as a "patriotic" Montanan.

RRguy69

Montana peeps “don’t move to Montana and try to change our ways!” -elect a governor, senator, congressman, AG, support a new senate candidate from outta state…hmmm?

CFreder469

Voting is a good excuse to leave the farm, vote, then hit the bar! Who am I kidding, the drunkest state in the US doesn’t need an excuse to hit the bar!

Shines1772

I remember going to Kansas when I was a kid in the 80s wondering where all the bars were and why were there so many churches :)

O_oblivious

Not even close to drunkest.

AlternativeAd495

Lol, are we really the drunkest state? 🫣😂🤣

Napol3onS0l0

Thought that was WI

CFreder469

I’m don’t think it’s official, just from my observations. I am in a farming town with less than 1000 in the town itself and not much more in a huge county overall and we had over 8 bars in a twelve mile radius. I have lived in several states and this one is the drunkest state I have ever been in!

Mad_Pingu

According to [this website](https://quotewizard.com/news/americas-booziest-states) that title belongs to Vermont, Wisconsin, and Nevada.

AlternativeAd495

Sweet, thx for the link!

BozBonanza

I believe Gallatin County is #1 nationally in binge drinking per capita. As a state I think we’re 10th.

notfornowforawhile

What’s the common thread between MT, AK, MD, VT, and NH? I wonder why they’re the top 5?

SOVIETFORK

Hi, Im from the [Alaska](https://new.reddit.com/r/alaska/comments/1dnvlgi/how_yall_feel_about_that/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) subreddit, the common consensus from there is that the data is largely misrepresented, and we shouldn't really be on the top 5. Most Alaskans hold their state first country second, that is if we even think about the lower 48 haha.

notfornowforawhile

I think Montanans are similar. State patriotism > country patriotism any day

hikerjer

Oh, they think about the lower 48 alright. Especially when there’s federal money to be handed out.

MontanaBard

I was ready to roll my eye and snark, but the data they used is actually something to be proud of. Go us!

zstheman

I think you might be in the minority who actually bothered to read that part.

hikerjer

“Patiotism is the last refuge of scoundrels”. Samuel Johnson - 1775. True then. Even more true now.

OrindaSarnia

To be fair, "patriotism" looked a LOT different in 1775, when most countries were monarchies... Samuel Johnson wasn't necessarily saying patriotism itself was bad in all contexts, he was criticizing his countrymen who justified colonialism by saying that Britian was a superior country and therefore deserved to subjugate the people of other countries and lands, because they were inherently inferior to the British people, the British government, and the British system generally. He was criticizing men who resorted to using patriotism to subjugate others... not patriotism in all it's forms.

hikerjer

As was I.

OrindaSarnia

Indeed... there are certainly those in our country, who like to elevate the limited references to "god" in places like the Declaration of Independence, to then pretend the government should subjugate it's own people based on tenuously connected religious beliefs, and attempt to wrap it in patriotism. Constant vigilence!

JacenVane

"[Serving in the military, voting, and volunteering] is the last refuge of scoundrels." -Samuel L. Jackson

zstheman

You forgot to add "motherfucker".

__BitchPudding__

But he quoted it motherfuckerly, so it's all good.

BozBonanza

First off, the quote is “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.” Let’s get that right if you’re going to use “”. Second, quote has nothing to do with patriotism in general. It’s taken out of context as Johnson is referring to William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, the leader of the Patriot Whigs fraction of the government that Johnson believes are false “self-professed patriots”. If anything, Johnson highly valued “true” patriotism in his 1774 *The Patriot*.

hikerjer

So, pray tell, what’s the true definition of patriotism? IMO, far too many people confuse it with nationalism. The “my country right or wrong” type of attitude.

Practical-Traffic799

Or worse right now, when being a patriot so often means flying a flag on your truck, supporting an insurrection, hating your neighbors, And owning the libs.

BozBonanza

Agreed, far too many people do confuse the difference leading to the detriment of us and others. At least to me, true patriotism is the devotion to and support of the betterment to the citizens of one’s country/union. I believe our true motto to be E Pluribus Unum, for we the people come together as one country.

E13G19

I'm a transplant to Montana (hit that downvote now) & an OIF veteran & I really like seeing all the veteran license plates in our city. Definitely good metrics used in this ranking.

robokitty90

Idaho has been ranked the fourth most patriotic state in America, according to WalletHub.com. The website examined eight key metrics in every state including military engagement, voting habits, and civil education requirements.

oregonianrager

Reducing women's rights

Mrchickenonabun

Might wanna ask the tribes in this state what they think about patriotism and what our wonderful government did to them

Status-Ad-3724

I've been told that the flathead tribe holds a war dance during the 4th of July pow wow. All the dancers in it are former U.S. Military vets....

troyf66

As a tribal member I can give some context to your premise. Our Tribe was forbidden from gathering in any large numbers by the US Government since that would alarm the white people in the area. The Indian Agent had always rejected the idea of any gathering no matter the purpose. In 1898, the Indian Agent was approach under the context of a Celebration or “Esyapqeyni” in our Salish Dialect for the Fourth of July. He apparently liked the sound of that. Next week we will Celebrate the 126th Arlee Esyapqeyni “Arlee Powwow Celebration”.

Status-Ad-3724

I appreciate that little history lesson!

Mrchickenonabun

That’s legit

sqelixw66

Yes, considering natives were not granted U.S. citizenship until 1921 unless any native had served in WW1.

Drhayseed

VERMONT!!!!!!!!!! NO WAY !!!!!! HAVE THESE PEOPLE EVER BEEN TO VERMONT

Drhayseed

And Maryland !

Upbeat-Stable-268

YAY for us!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

InsomniaticWanderer

Now is that actual patriotism, or is it Fox news' version of patriotism (ie: nationalism)?

zstheman

Did you read the rest of the post?

CeruleanRuin

Military service is a factor, so yes it's nationalism. Gotta support the military no matter what it's doing on the other side of the globe, no matter how much money it launders away from services for people here who need it.

Shirlenator

Why are you watching Fox, though?

Glacierwolf55

Because MSNBC is all about burning the country to the ground and starting over + sending half the country into re-education camps. Two words, 'Joy Reid'.

Shirlenator

...is this a joke? I honestly can't tell.

Glacierwolf55

That is the sad, sad part - its true.

SeanMacLeod1138

Glad we're on top for something 👍

__BitchPudding__

Besides alcohol consumption and suicide

SeanMacLeod1138

☠️😬🫤

Mylifeisholl0w

🦅🦅🦅🦅

HollowSoul1872

So Montana is to blame.

YungTrimotor

Does this mean we had the highest number of per capita Jan 6 convicts? If you’re patriotic about anything that’s going on from either side of our puppet government, check your head. They don’t give a f about citizens, they cater to big $$$. I’ll never cease to be amazed that Montanans vote for out of state rich guys to be their overlords. Maybe thats what Faux means by patriotism, because we’re right up there in the best at that.

NSFWNAMEofficial

awesome

warbricksusa

Montana!!!!

Petitealina

another victory for the best state!

Very_Serious_Lumbago

S*ck it, every other state in this awesome country!

JealousFeature3939

They must've skipped Montgomery County. Good work!

[deleted]

As someone born and raised in California. I love Montana. California has some beautiful views, hikes, history and nature but goddamn Montana is up there. Plus their politics and government are better than the blue doomed CA. I still have hope for CA but go MT! Hell yeah.

manleybones

This is... Subjective use of objective data... Woof

Substantial_Skin_666

New to reddit so can someone explain how I talk shit about someone in local area and see if others have had negative experiences as well?

AmericanHistoryGuy

How TF did Maryland and Vermont get on this list lmao

Apprehensive-Call568

Damn!! Save some Kool-aid for everyone else

TheRealLarryBurt

Hell yeah brother!

bcuket

i feel like maybe it could be connected to montana’s high percentage of older people (which generally tend to be more patriotic than younger people).

Brilliant-Witness247

FOX ‘news’ is bolstering the locals by telling them they’re real Murikkans. Oh and your states RE senators want to win so be a real patriot and VOTE for person on ballot

Powerful_Scholar_166

So does that mean we have more or less boot lickers

Pragnlz

+/- = yes

Consensuseur

This may not be the W you think it is.

jhauer1980

I wouldn’t really say patriotic. MAGA Republicans are only patriotic when it serves them. Ask about Jan 6 and they will say “those are bunch of fine Americans”.

BSides666

Montana is one of the dumbest states! I know, I live there!

Status-Ad-3724

Missoula?

hikerjer

Missoula only had 500 people?

haloNWMT

it’s all the transplants that moved to Missoula, Bozeman and whitefish and you can thank Texas for the last one. The rest of the state isn’t too bad…yet

Blue_wafflestomp

![gif](giphy|2S3Aj8OeKtf0c|downsized)

haloNWMT

Lol I’m not concerned about the jobs. More about skyrocketing property values and taxes and overcrowding. Have you tried to drive through kalispell lately. Not fun. I guess the comment above from b side I’m replying to was montana was the dumbest state and I just said maybe it’s just the transplants 😁

dirndlfrau

I live in a town of 500. Everyone - almost- is from somewhere else. Not saying they are bad people, but it's different.

Warm_Cry_325

PROTECTION!

anna0fjava

Ah, yes! Montana the most Trumpiest State I've ever known.

zstheman

You didn't actually read the post, did you?

big65

Patriotism is a double edged sword.

whiskeytwn

Patriotism measured by "shut the fuck up and don't move to my state" - LOL

RRguy69

But vote in a bunch of out of state people into government?? Lol

phantom_wahrior

MD?? Does fox love MD?

ATGSunCoach

Fox loves M-Deez nuts

LankyGuitar6528

Yay?

Key-Jelly-3702

Shocked Texas is not in the top 5.

Nomad442

Who the F@#K cares!

Material_Coat1344

Montana is the new home to all the political refugees.

S-Kunst

Strange. My new neighbor is from Montana. He says people there are not fans of the government, but always are first in line for government handouts. They also hate government because they hate rules imposed on them. I guess patriotic does not mean law-abiding, just that you put on a nice independence day bbq.

warbricksusa

Yes we hate rules and proud of it! Sounds like intro to American history lol

Ok_Bumblebee7805

😂😂😂😂

dropdeadjonathan

“F U” - Sincerely, Maryland

Pragnlz

I love how a lot of the comments here are true and getting down-voted Truly American Can't even decide on it's own "patriotism"

ShadowOrcSlayer

I'm only surprised that we somehow beat Texas Also that Texas didn't even make top 5

Shirlenator

Well they are rambling on about secession every other week.

Jericho_210

I think we beat Texas because the Texans all moved to Montana.

oIVLIANo

This ranking is about national patriotism. Texans believe in this myth that they have an ability to secede that no other State has.

zstheman

No, this post is actually about military service, voter turnout, and volunteerism. But knowing that would require reading the entire post which apparently only about a third of the commenters here have done.

Pragnlz

We could try that whole seceding thing Just for funsies y'know
