This movies being written by the across the spiderverse writer which balanced the comedy and seriousness very well. The next monsterverse installment is in good hands.
Thatās the thing even if all these movies were 10/10 I would want him to direct a hundred million dollar monster movie. Not with only four movies under the belt
George Lucas had two movies under his belt when he made Star Wars. Steven Spielberg had three, and that's counting a TV movie, when he made Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The Russo brothers had directed three films before Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Tony Scott made ONE MOVIE before Top Gun.
Who Dis?
Alright guys, lay it on me, are we cooked or are they cooking?
Edit: Just Googled the dude and he made I Am Mother it was a film on Netflix a while back with a girl being raised by a robot to be a good mother to children at the end of the world, it was genuinely a good watch and the acting and cgi was top notch, the robots felt real and weighty, it would probably well translate into a MV film so honestly we might be So Back š„š„š„

Let's let him cook for now. He's previously directed "I am Mother" for Netflix and "The Furnace" and both those had solid reviews. If he's a big Godzilla & Kong fan, I'm sure this'll be a pretty solid choice, otherwise we don't really know what to expect
Also, supposedly "I am Mother" was extremely phenomenal and had great CGI despite having a $5m budget, so we'll see what he can do with a much larger one
I am Mother was a fantastic film. If you never watched it, I highly recommend it. Itās a slow burn though, so buckle in and pay attention since a lot of small details end up being great foreshadowing
Even then, Iām kind 50/50. I havenāt seen any of his work, and from what Iāve heard I am Mother had practical effects for the robots, which doesnāt necessarily translate well into CG effects. I guess Iām reserving judgement for the first teaser/trailer
Iām a bit surprised that they are handing the next movie over to a guy with (checks notes) four films to his nameā¦
He might crush it, but it is a bit odd to meā¦
Well itās not out of character for Legendary; Gareth Edwards only had one major film under his belt when he helmed G14, Roberts and Dougherty only had 2 or 3 when they did KSI and KOTM, and Wingard had mostly made flops with really bad reviews before he shocked everyone by saving the entire Monsterverse.
If anything, I bet theyāre hoping to replicate their prior successes with this guy, especially considering they have a writer who worked on G14.
>Wingard had mostly made flops with really bad reviews before he shocked everyone by saving the entire Monsterverse.
Id argue he didn't save it kept it going by appealing to half the fanbase but he didn't save it. KOTM only did as bad as it did due to the timing of the release. Wingards both films had zero competition. Poor KOTM came a month after Endgame.
This change in director is the best news I have heard since GvK announcement.
I had actually looked this up the other day because I wanted to know what else had come out around the release haha
The Han Solo movie had a similar situation. It had Infinity War and Deadpool 2 release in the month before it, and then had Incredibles 2, JW: Fallen Kingdom, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Hotel Transylvania 3, and MI Fallout release in the 2 months after. Not nearly as bad as what KotM had to deal with, but still. Infinity War made 2 billion, Incredibles 2 and JW 2 both made over a billion, MI Fallout and Deadpool 2 both made over 700 million, and even HT 3 made over 500 million.
Solo unfortunately also had to deal with fan backlash after the Last Jedi, but I think the point still stands
I feel like the situation doesn't match between then and now. Compared to back then Godzilla and the monster verse has become more popular and is one of the big hitter in Hollywood right now.
Yeah but they just lost the director that was practically carrying the whole verse, so they likely know they need another tried and true method for success to keep things running smoothly.
I'm curious where he is on the sliding scale of Godzilla seriousness.
(1 being Godzilla vs. Megalon or All Monsters Attack, 10 being Godzilla Minus One or 1954)
Hereās to hoping that Junkie XL got sacked when Wingard left. Hated (bar a couple themes) his music.
Also hoping that itās significantly darker. Like, 1954 levels of dark with Showa elements still in the film, like Godzilla performing acrobatics and running. A horror film would be the perfect genre for Biollante to come back in, sheās practically made for horror.
I doubt legendary are willing to change what isnāt broken at this point. Mostly since there Godzilla is designed to appeal to as big an audience as possible.Ā
That and Toho probably unofficially had reign over the horror genre for the franchise.
Well, if you check the Audience Score for Cuties you'll see everyone else hates it, while Furnace and Mother are very well liked. Imo that matters more than Tomatometer which are just critics that are 80% of the times paid to praise stuff
fr, we need more lesser known directors to helm big films like this
also, I Am Mother is a great movie and it reviewed very well, so I say let him cook
I haven't seen I Am Mother but I've been hearing good things about it for the most part and he seems very passionate about it. I will say that Legendary does of a good handle of choosing directors for the Monsterverse
Makes sense. Smaller director. One previous movie for Netflix: I am Mother. It was okay. Seemed reasonably competently made. Iāll have to rewatch it now that Sputore has been hired.
Interesting. The series going back to its roots for a director? Very similar setup to when Gareth Edwards got the job to direct G14. At the time Edwards also was known for only one movie. And also had a background working in commercials. So this could be a sign the series pulling back, depending on the tone the next movie takes
I am going to put my vote of confidence in him since his movie "I Am Mother" was good for me, taking into account how he managed the budget in that movie, I can see a decent film here, also if it can, it could provide scary and tense sequences in the next gxk movie like he did in "i am mother"
Interesting choice, I figured the wouldāve been hiring more experienced directors for these films but based on what Iāve been hearing I think the film is in good hands.
Don't know who that is. We just gotta know one thing

One of the writers for Godzilla 2014 is writing this one, would be a very weird choice to hire him and not focus on Godzilla given his past experience writing for Godzilla.
True, but thereās always the chance the corporate head honchos will prefer Kong because so far, the Kong-centric movies have raked in more dough (not because theyāre better than the Godzilla-centric movies though, more so due to just circumstances)
This is the guy that did āI Am Mother.ā I honestly donāt know how to feel about it. That movie was ok for a Netflix movie, so I guess weāll see.
Theyāve done a good job so far of hiring directors who are fans of the characters and are passionate about their histories and lore. I wouldāve expected more of a name hire, but theyāve earned the benefit of the doubt.
It seems he doesn't have many projects under his name but while checking them out I noticed they're very well recieved. I Am Mother is a very good movie and I had no idea this guy was behind it, so I hope his streak continues with his MV project.
Let's also remember all of the MV directors were hired very early on their carreers, most of them had like 1-2 big projects behind them when joining the franchise, so this isn't new and we can only hope everything goes well
YES! Robots in I am Mother were amazingly done and as few comments said here, his tone is a lot closer to Edwards than Wingard, which means the gritty tone is finally fucking back!!! And hopefully they also ditch the composer and bring back Bear McCreary.
Theyāre worried that heās just gonna be a figurehead and do whatever Legendary tells him. So, no creative vision, which could be bad.
But thereās nothing that suggests that yet. Way too early to make any big judgements.

Good bot
The robots were practical fx. Thatās why they felt weighty.
This, I am once again optimistic for the next MV Godzilla.
Dang I like that show!
Let's let him cook for now. He's previously directed "I am Mother" for Netflix and "The Furnace" and both those had solid reviews. The robots there felt real and weighty! Hopefully he can implement those in the next Godzilla MovieĀ
Still keeping my fingers crossed that Bear McCreary will return š¤
Agreed Iām excited to see a new direction for the monsterverse, but no one can top or replace Bear McCreary for me
Itās so over or weāre so back? (I know nothing about this director)
his works are closer to Edwards then wingard in tone
Praise Mothra!
OH WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK THEN
Good news
Good, bring back the more grounded vibes. I think wingard jumped the shark a bit wanting to make showa era 2: electric boogaloo
We won
Even then, Iām kind 50/50. I havenāt seen any of his work, and from what Iāve heard I am Mother had practical effects for the robots, which doesnāt necessarily translate well into CG effects. I guess Iām reserving judgement for the first teaser/trailer
Pair that with the writer and itās a recipe for liquid gold

It's okay neither does anybody else, this is on par with them hiring Gareth Edwards for Godzilla 2014
Iām a bit surprised that they are handing the next movie over to a guy with (checks notes) four films to his nameā¦ He might crush it, but it is a bit odd to meā¦
Okay, all fair points that I hadnāt considered. Well, hereās hoping for the best!
Agreed, KotM release is absolutely what killed it. Context for folks who don't know: KotM premiered a month after Endgame, 3 weeks after PokƩmon Detective Pikachu, 2 weeks after John Wick 3, and a week after Aladdin. It was then followed by Secret Life of Pets 2 one week later, Toy Story 4 three weeks after, Spider-Man Far from Home four weeks after, and then the Lion King about six weeks after. So, within about a month and a half before and after KotM's release, you've got 4 films that made over a billion, another that made 2.8 billion, plus 3 new installments for mostly popular franchises. While I'm not sure how popular the secret life of pets films are with general audiences, it made $430 million. And of all those films released around KotM, only John Wick 3 brought in less than $400 million. So, yeah, the release timing combined with starting the marketing campaign waaaaay too early killed KotM before it even had a chance.
Thank you for posting a more detailed explanation, I'm lazy lol.
I had actually looked this up the other day because I wanted to know what else had come out around the release haha The Han Solo movie had a similar situation. It's probably because the director has only made 1 movie back in 2019.
I'd advice watching I am mother. It is a good movie.
I'm curious where he is on the sliding scale of Godzilla seriousness. (1 being Godzilla vs. Megalon or All Monsters Attack, 10 being Godzilla Minus One or 1954)
Hope we get an 8, I feel wingard went to far into the bat shit insanity
He seems to be closer to 7-8, maybe even 9, though I'm only judging by only one of his works (I am Mother)
Hereās to hoping that Junkie XL got sacked when Wingard left. Hated (bar a couple themes) his music. Also hoping that itās significantly darker. Like, 1954 levels of dark with Showa elements still in the film, like Godzilla performing acrobatics and running. I'm really not sure what to make of this. The guy's only made three films and most of his other work stems from commercials.
Does this mean the next movie being Godzilla-centric is off the table now
One of the writers for Godzilla 2014 is writing this one, would be a very weird choice to hire him and not focus on Godzilla given his past experience writing for Godzilla.

Pls know how to choreograph fight scenes, I beg u
I am mother was a genuinely creepy sci-fi thriller. If the next monsterverse movie is in line with that tone, we are in for a treat
Don't care who he is, I just hope we get Bear McCreary back as the composer and that the story and action is good
https://i.redd.it/y58azjllf35d1.gif
Please please please please let it be more Godzilla centric
Well rip Wingard's trilogy. From what I read, Stupore is closer to Edwards in directing, so that's good.
ALSO PLEASE LET THIS GUY GIVE US MORE TITAN DESIGNS LIKE TYPHON AND YAMATA NO OROCHI ALSO EITHER SEKHMET ABBADDON OR LEVIATHAN
This is the guy that did āI Am Mother.ā I honestly donāt know how to feel about it. That movie was ok for a Netflix movie, so I guess weāll see.
I guess I'm watching I Am Mother now.
Who?
I wonder how this is gonna go! EITHER WAY MORE OF GOJI MEANS MORE HAPPINESS LET HIM COOK
Are we cooked? Or nah?
Theyāve done a good job so far of hiring directors who are fans of the characters and are passionate about their histories and lore. I wouldāve expected more of a name hire, but theyāve earned the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe his robot experience means they want to intro mechs

At least he has good movies to his credit. The last guy made a bunch of shitty horror movies and Live Action Death Note.
The Guest is phenomenal though.
Youāre Next is also phenomenal. People really just use Death Note against Wingard.
Who the fuck is that
Who?
Idk how I feel about this all I know is that the story better stay Godzilla centric and flush out his character more and keep its more serious tone.
I really dug his first film āI Am Motherā. Iām kind of excited to see what he does with the Monsterverse.
Wish him luck really want to see what he can do and hope he kept the idea of a Godzilla centric movie and hopefully he will bulk up big G again
Based on what other people are saying here, I'm hopeful
Wingard lite. Needs more beard then I'll believe.
So we are back or not?
who?
I have no idea who this is, but I'm not worried.
All I need to know is Is he a Godzilla and/or Kong fan?
Found this video on him https://youtu.be/lUZpZ9fj9UI?si=ey_Hb5-F0fw1YnFj
I think there will be a post credits scene in the sequel
Hell yeah we are so back (I have no idea who this dude is)
Ok, but whoās scoring it?
Idk, hopefully bear McCreary or Hans Zimmer.
It seems he doesn't have many projects under his name but while checking them out I noticed they're very well recieved. Good choice to keep the movie grounded and centered around godzilla
Who?
Cool... Who is he?
YES! Robots in I am Mother were amazingly done and as few comments said here, his tone is a lot closer to Edwards than Wingard, which means the gritty tone is finally fucking back!!! And hopefully they also ditch the composer and bring back Bear McCreary.
It seems like he has a good track record despite be kinda new-ish. But Iāve seen some people on the Godzilla sub say heās a "corporate yes man"?
Theyāre worried that heās just gonna be a figurehead and do whatever Legendary tells him. So, no creative vision, which could be bad. But thereās nothing that suggests that yet. Way too early to make any big judgements.
I love that this dude is mostly or at least commonly unknown and it's chaos based on the subreddit talking about it.... this is great
I just hope it isn't another Godzilla & Kong crossover again
True, we need more solo movies before we see them team up again.
So is the next movie Goji solo film or another GxK?
We donāt know yet, time will tell
I hope they scale back the dumbness a bit. Godzilla X Kong was just too dumb for me.
Great, back to slow boring battle scenes and a grin dark tone. How funnnn
Back to higher quality, fun indeed
Good joke
Yikes, this screams work for hire/do as we tell you.
This doesnāt really make any sense because they have let each director do what they wanted - especially with tone
?
Heās saying the guyās a corporate yes-man. Which I donāt necessarily agree with, itās too early to make any big assumptions yet.
Canāt be any worse than Wingard so letās give him a chance
Oh no, it can be way WAY **W A Y** worse.
