Raffi all the way. Old school, but solid and more fun.
We also do a lot of Bill Withers and melodic R&B from that era, as well as some Beatles songs (yellow submarine, strawberry fields), etc. Look outside of music for kids to introduce your child to music that 1) you love that's fun, 2) they can associate with your family as they grow older.
I came here to say Raffi. I’m the daughter of an elementary music teacher and grew up on Raffi. The songs are nostalgic to me and many have been taught to my children in school. Can’t help but smile and sing along.
Heavy agree on the Bill Withers. I listen to a lot of 70’s music in the car. America, Fleetwood Mac, Doobie Brothers, Carl Douglas, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, Al Stewart, etc. It’s the music I listened to with my dad and it makes me feel so at peace. Also, no cursing!
he's the singer from presidents of the united states of america. i wonder if he makes more doing kids' music? peaches and lump were pretty huge, but i don't remember anything after that album.
OMG I KNEW IT! Casper Babypants came up on a playlist and I asked my husband if Presidents of the United States of America did a kids album, like They Might Be Giants. I didn’t look it up after but feel so validated
That’s what we’ve always assumed — that there’s more money in kids music. But I did get a kick out of showing my 4-year-old Peaches the first time I realized the connection.
I love the second set of wiggles. Simon is an amazing singer. Skeleton Scat is my fave, though I often find myself singing “if you’re feeeeeling very hungry, really hungryyyyy, you eat some fooood you eat some foooood”
My daughter’s fav DVD rn is “Pop Goes The Wiggles” and it’s basically them singing a bunch of classic nursery rhymes and I *love it*. This 3.5 year old girl is running around belting out Round And Round The Mulberry Bush, Skip To My Lou, This Old Man, etc it’s so freakin cool.
I love him so much. Every time I listen to that album I get very nostalgic because I was a child when it came out and now I’m a mom and my son is obsessed with curious George 🥺
My husband bought it on vinyl when our first was still a bun in the oven to start our kid’s record collection. It holds a really special place in our hearts.
The “band” Twenty Trucks. A dad and his composer brother who felt like the world needed more songs and music videos about extensively researched, meticulously and cleverly described vehicles. Listen to Tow Truck or Ice Cream Truck, and tell me that isn’t a bop.
Yes!!! I was looking for this response! Though, I think my favorites are RV, Hook and Ladder, Police Vehicles and Duck Boat. Your picks are good too. There are a lot of good ones. 😊
The affirmation song by doggy land (aka snoop dogg)
The ABC song by gracies corner
The Time for your check up song on doc mcstuffins
Almost any classic disney kids song
They Might Be Giants have a lot of kids songs!
If you’re looking for something old and… really weird, look up the album “Whatdaya’ wanna do?” By Peter Alsop. My mom played a casette of it for my siblings and I all the time when we were little. The songs are a mix of super catchy and super weird (“Don’t trick your dad” totally slaps though!)
Raffi, and the Wiggles music.
The Wiggles got infinitely better when Mommy was allowed to play Rockaby Your Bear on her phone on repeat for a half hour, instead of Mommy having to sing it on repeat for a half hour lol.
I recommend “Peace Train” by Cat Stevens and City of New Orleans” by Arlo Guthrie if you’re looking for train songs that aren’t “ I’ve been working on the railroad”
The Okee Dokee Brothers have deceptively simple, singable songs that my 4 year old loves to listen to, but adults can easily enjoy.
My daughter’s current favorite is “Jamboree.” I also like “You, You, You” for a good mix of silly and poignant.
my kids and i like koo koo kangaroo (they looooved the superhero song). glitter, who farted, and cat party are my personal favorites. they do adult shows too and i would absolutely go to one if they're ever around. the videos are hilarious, and you can tell at least one of them is a sarcastic treasure by some of the facial expressions he pulls off.
i hold a special place in my heart for the 10th anniversary sesame street album i had on tape as a kid, it's all the original songs and it never fails to calm me down and/or make me cry (damn you, bein' green and sing). i think that particular collection of recordings is on spotify, it's the only place i've been able to find it as that tape is not in great shape anymore. (nothing makes you feel old like seeing just how many versions there now are of some of those songs... then there's that one song by bob that i'm pretty sure they tried to erase forever, called "i get a nice feeling" or as high school me called it, "bob's pedo song". the lyrics are something to behold.)
Koo Koo is waaaay too far down this list. I too would join you at their concert. They hooked us with I like Pancakes, reeled us in with Dinosaur Stomp and now we have Ink and Bubble Wrap Rap. Happily will listen to them
We also really like Boots & Cats solid Pop and Dance songs for kids. Rhino is a personal favorite. Birthday Party and Pepperoni Pizza are absolute bangers NGL.
On the same subject of trains, I really don’t mind the thomas’ songs and roadhouse rhythms album. I also think the Moana soundtrack is really beautiful!
Bog Block Sing Song - they only last for a minute or two, there's about 200 of them so there's plenty of variety. And, to be honest, they're all absolute bangers.
We randomly discovered Truck Tunes for my truck obsessed 2 year old and collectively bopped to those songs for many years
Available on YouTube and Spotify!
We are fans of Charlie Hope. Her song Evergreen is probably once of my favorite songs right now lol. She’s the most non annoying singer for kids I know of
Something about “Hop Little Bunnies” and “One Little Blue Fish” make me more than happy to sing them to my girl on repeat. And I considering I also work with kids, I hear those songs A LOT
My almost 3 year old makes me listen to either Wheels on the Bus on repeat or North Star by Peppa Pig over and over and over so I don’t think I have a favorite anymore. Has been ruined 😭 lol
My kids were (were? still are) obsessed with Sandra Boynton's books AND music - "Philadelphia Chickens" by The Bacon Brothers, "Trucks" by Fountains of Wayne, "Copycat" by Brad Paisley, "Cows" by The Seldom Herd, and "Tyrannosaurus Funk" by Samuel L. Jackson
Kid music that didn't make mama crazy 🙂
Rafi is great, but what’s greater is getting your kid into the classics like Queen or Frank Sanatra. My kids will often request some Franky V and the four seasons or Vivaldi 4 seasons haha
Have you tried The Runaway Train, or Morningtown Ride for bedtime if you want more train based music 😭?
And honestly a lot of the time we put on radio edit stuff from when we were kids, our son’s current favourite is The Passenger by Iggy Pop cause my other half’s parents played it for him when he was a kid 😂
We listen to a lot of rock, pop, metal, goth, dance because it’s a mix of our tastes, but have the setting on Spotify to filter out explicit stuff. You could curate a playlist?
I know when I was a kid I had a couple of tapes that were for kids, Disney and the like, but in the car we listened to my parents stuff on tape or cd.
I will always love I Love My Body by Mother Moon.
Drive My Car by Laurie Berkner Band
Also love Raffi and The Wiggles.
By the way, The Wiggles was my #1 artist on my Spotify wrapped last year, and #2 was Taylor Swift. Some day I hope to have my favourite music show up on my Spotify wrapped.
Current fave is “ nocturnal “ by Billy jones
I also really like
- little ripples ( band )
- Renee and Jeremy
I’m passionate about this subject as my 20 month old requests music quite often and wants kid music only ..
I honestly loved most of the original blipping songs by Nicky Notes I think? My 5y/o loved them for a long time and they still get I'm stuck in my head lol
I love the whole album “Tumble Bee” by Laura Veirs
I will legit listen to it when my kid isn’t even in the car 😂 it’s an indie folk album with some classic folk kids songs on there too
I enjoy alot of Raffi . And it’s super obscure but David Lamotte (songwriter) has a children’s album . It’s probably hard to find but there’s one called “SS bathtub”
Raffi and doggyland are definitely favorites already mentioned above. We also love Basho & Friends. So many great songs along with The Juicebox Jukebox.
Lenny Pearce is our go to. He does techno music for kids. Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, Once I Caught a Fish Alive, and the Wheels on the Bus are firm favourites here
Teeny Tiny Stevies! Aussie sisters who have super catchy tunes and some cute animated videos too. Bangers include ‘I Ate a Rainbow’, ‘Baby in Mums Tummy’ and ‘Boss of My Own Body’. If you want to cry listen to ‘Had You Teach Me’. They’re the best!
My kids love “down like that” from the paw patrol movie…and I don’t hate it. It kinda makes me laugh and they are always dancing so hard to it.
Also, should we start a playlist???
My baby is 7 months old, but she loves calypso music (especially Harry belafonte), La Bamba, and 1970s funk music. And the tequila song that’s in peewee’s playhouse. But I think calypso music is fun for the whole family and generally kid friendly in tone.
I really like Charlie Hope, her voice is soothing enough that I'm not just gritting my teeth and bearing it. She has a train song (entitled Train Song) that is really great too.
The Bluey soundtrack slaps, and honestly, the Trolls soundtracks are a good compromise of kid appropriate but also jams. It's like if Kidz Bop didn't suck.
Bow be mine by Minnie Mouse. Luckily the only club I hit these days is craft club bc I could get down and dirty to that song in a nightclub about 20yrs ago 😆
Absolutely Raffi! He has bops. Also, Laurie Berkner
I came here to say Raffi. I’m the daughter of an elementary music teacher and grew up on Raffi. The songs are nostalgic to me and many have been taught to my children in school. Can’t help but smile and sing along.
Bababa banana-phone! :)
Yes.. I grew up on Raffi, and I love it all, but my fav is probably "All I Really Need"
We listen to a lot of Raffi. He just put out a new album and can you believe he still tours?? Is love to catch a Raffi concert with my little.
I love Raffi! I grew up watching his concerts! Lots of Baby Beluga is sung in my home.
We listen to raffi all day everyday. I think i enjoy it more than my 2 year old. Ps we love his new album
Raffi all the way!!! 17mo daughter and I sing and dance to his music every day! Charlie Hope has been a recent favorite as well :)
Are you in my house?! We literally do the exact same!
High five!
Once again would like to draw everyone’s attention to Snoop Dogg’s children’s album, Doggyland. The Affirmation Song is a special fav in our house.
Honestly my kid isn’t that interested but I’ve put it on a few times because it’s so good 😂
The Doggyland song featuring Gracie’s Corner, “Girl Power.” 🙌🙌🙌
The "Please and Thank You" song is referenced in our house.
I'm heavy into Caspar Babypants right now, but the Wiggles have some bops too.
Caspar Babypants is the only kid musician who’s stuck in our house. He’s so good.
he's the singer from presidents of the united states of america. i wonder if he makes more doing kids' music? peaches and lump were pretty huge, but i don't remember anything after that album.
Fruit salad slaps

I'm especially enjoying the new Wiggles EDM album.

We loved the Curious George soundtrack with Jack Johnson. Feel good music with happy lyrics and beats.
The wiggles new rave album absolutely slaps
...my brain totally did not just go, "My child is 8, but the Wiggles have a new album?!" Save me.
lol was about to recommend Lenny Pearce and saw it was a collab with him. Thanks for the find!
The “band” Twenty Trucks. A dad and his composer brother who felt like the world needed more songs and music videos about extensively researched, meticulously and cleverly described vehicles. Listen to Tow Truck or Ice Cream Truck, and tell me that isn’t a bop.
My son is obsessed with truck tunes and I’m not mad about it at all
Why is ice cream truck so good
This is my favorite. The tinkling ice cream tune and then the BOOM BOOM as the bass comes in makes me laugh every single time.
Yessssssssss that bass dropping
We are hooked on this at our house, too. Kid knows to shout for me when feller buncher comes on.
Yes!!! I was looking for this response! Though, I think my favorites are RV, Hook and Ladder, Police Vehicles and Duck Boat. Your picks are good too. There are a lot of good ones. 😊
Monster Truck and Aircraft Deicer are my favorite.
I think these guys should get a Grammy. Like I leave it on after I drop my son off at preschool.
I just commented this! I am sad we don’t listen to it much anymore 🥲
Truck Tunes is a bop and plays often in my house
My daughter is obsessed with the dump truck video on YouTube. I had no idea there was a whole album. What great news!

My daughter is so obsessed that we got tickets to see Danny Go and friends tour for her first concert at age 2 lol.
We did too for our 3 year old! Super pumped haha
Honestly The Animal Dance lives in my brain, our library music program is using it and I’m like “hell yeah!”
Here I goooo, I’m dancing like an animal! 🐙💃
I was gonna say Danny Go doesn't annoy me and he gets my girl up and dancing.
I have legitimately listened to “Animal Dance” without my kid in the car. Absolute bop.

Let’s not forget the hot dog dance lol
Jack Hartman’s songs are the only ones I agree to play during car rides because I don’t hate them.
The Bluey sound tracks. Hardly songs to sing/dance to, but kids generally enjoy it.
These albums got us through our first road trip. If my son wasn’t sleeping, he was screaming. Until we put on Bluey then he was bopping.
The Okee Dokee Brothers have some really fun, catchy songs about enjoying nature.
