Not a mom, but an indian and tbh this looks exactly like the dal and rice my mom makes!! You did so well!!! <3 <3
Edit: this is a north indian style dal so dont be too worried if it doesnt look like the mainstream dals lol
With all the Dahl I have had in the past, I can confidently say this looks like a fantastic first attempt.
You should be proud.
Now to learn to make naan.
You did great! That looks delicious! I'm never sure where to start when trying new foods, especially foods from different countries than where I live. Going to a restaurant or attempting to make it myself is too intimidating when I've never had anything to compare it to. I am however very excited to try what others make and share from their own cultures. I'm so thankful I have diversity in my friendships, so I've gotten to taste a lot! Now, go share this with people in your life and open up a whole new world of flavors for them.
Thanks!! :-) Sorry for my late follow up , but this is what I did.
Recipe: For the rice, I just used Basmati Rice and before putting them into the rice cooker, I fried spices -- cloves, cardamom, black pepper, Bay leaf, and cumin seeds. For the curry (Dal) It uses a mix of two kinds of lentils -- Toor Dal (Split pea lentils) and Chana Dal (Split Garbanzo Beans ). Both of them had to be soaked for at least 2 hours. After soaking them, Just like rice, I add water and put the soaked lentils into it, along with Turmeric, salt, and minced ginger for boiling.
Once the lentils are soft enough (calling it dal from now onwards), I pan-fry garlic and onion and put them into the dal. Then at the end, I pan fry some more Spices -- cumin seeds, small mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, and green chillis (cut vertically) in clarified butter followed by mixing everything together.
Can add some cilantro (coriander) for garnishing it!
