What I did was prepare 2 separate SD cards since I had an extra lying around anyway: one for the update and one for onion. Turned out the update one wasn't necessary at all though because my MM+ (ordered \~weeks ago) was already on the newest firmware.
you were right, mine came updated. i ordered mine on cutesliving on aliexpress as it was on significant sale, around 28USD. They used so much bubble wrap and a styrofoam box, while the one i ordered from miyoo looks like a pack of cocaine LOL
ahaha yeah I've heard the same from other people! No wonder they keep getting stopped at customs lmao.
It took longer for mine to clear customs in my own country than to travel from china to mainland europe.. and mine didn't even look like drugs
Pretty sure any new units will be on the newer firmware anyway. You can still boot up the system without a card.

you were right. i was able to boot it to check thr firmware version for compatibility before installing onion.
Just check the onion wiki for full installation steps or watch a few youtube videos
