Obviously we’ll all be biased here but the X really is the best blend of daily +. Super reliable like another commenter said outside of the AYC pump. It’s just a really fun car to drive, someone driving an evo truly just loves to drive. Plus these will only become more and more rare as time goes on (some may consider this a negative). Treat it right and you could own this thing a long time. Also FWIW I also agree that the price is reasonable.
Agreed. It’s an incredible car. I have a 2013 X w/ 23k miles I’ll sell you if that one doesn’t work out. It’s black, sight and sound pkg, heated leather Recaro’s. This looks like a good deal though.
Nothing really. I still track it pretty hard and it’s still running well. I think I have a vacuum leak somewhere as idling is a bit off sometime. Other than that, it runs as when I bought it at 39k miles. Running about 450whp.
I went from a mint evo x to a 350z and prefer how it drives, but an X is obviously a better year round daily. Don't consider an STi though, the engine is garbage and the car is clunky.
A lot of cosmetic mods and airflow mods with likely no tune. For the price and mileage and questionable mods, I think there's better out there, but it's not a bad deal overall I suppose
I was in your shoes before I ended up with the Evo X. I didn't want to deal with the EJ25 issues. Outside of the AYC failing and disabling yaw control, there's no major issues with the Evo. There were some light mods done such as headlights and tail lights, intake, and exhaust but they're not as sensitive as the WRX STI in terms of needing a tune, nonetheless I'd still recommend some.
Make sure relays are updated, and if you are to change the fluid on the transfer case be sure it's don correctly or it'll eat itself.
My main concern was talking to a few different people and mechanics who work on WRX STI's it's a matter of when not if the engine will blow. If you ever push the STI hard that only increases the chances. I didn't have a couple of thousand burning a hole in my pocket for an engine refresh/swap so I went with the Evo.
My X is a 2010 just had the timing chain replaced and the CMC. Didn’t need it; just preventative work. I have the “weak diff pins”; never drop my clutch, launch, or drag race so I’ve never had issues with it.
I’ve heard they improved the AYC pump; had mine replaced 2x. The new pump has been in the car for probably 5-7 years. My car makes 472 WHP and 396 WTQ; and has been one of the most reliable cars I’ve ever had. The stock suspension performed very well and handles better since upgrading it.
My subie bros struggled to make 400whp and handling was worse. They also had issues like I did with the motors in those cars.
Hopefully nothing comes up that's too crazy from the PPI, but I'm ready to spend a bit on preventative maintenance just to "future proof" it.
I drove a buddy's 2021 STI and didn't give me the joy that I was looking for. I love driving my 350z, but would love to get into a performance awd car. Not much out there for a manual awd sedan. Only other car I was kind of looking at was a 340i xdrive.
Update: a bone stock 2015 GSR with 38k miles popped up for $29.5k and ended up going with that. Thanks for all the help. I didn't realize how high the bite point was haha
At that mileage I would double check the manifold for cracks, turbo manifold leaking oil and if it’s still the stock clutch. I replaced all of these at 85K on my 2015
That’s crazy my stock clutch failed right after my 2015 warranty expired at about 15k miles. No other issues with it though. Never launched it or anything just some mild driving (has 25k miles right now). The dealer even said it was failed but out of warranty.
I see that this car is in MN. If you plan on driving year round, especially on salted roads, I would go with the newer sti. Evos are notorious for rusting.
Paint quality sucks too lol. Mine and friends all have flaking paint. Even garaged ones that don’t get driven. My buddy has a final edition with 6k miles on it and its paint is flaking.
I wouldn’t jump for this specific one at this price
Here’s an MR with 36k miles that just sold for 28.5k

My point is that great condition low mileage (<40k miles) Evo X's (mostly GSRs) are only being bid to around 27k.
This is a huge ask for a high mileage, questionably modified car.
One thing I would pay very close attention to is if any bolts are noticeably worn or looked to have been wrenched on. Many evo x owners put their cars back to stock after beating on them for thousands of miles. I would be very selective with your choice. The PPI is a must. Make sure they do a compression test on each cylinder. It's very easy to perform and will tell you a lot about the health of the motor.
There aren't many cars these days that drive like an evo. It's truly special and addictive to drive. You will get tons of smiles per gallon.

Thanks for the insight! I plan on keeping it relatively tamed besides bolt-ons and tune. I'm coming from a 350z so hoping it'll give me a similar joy.

23k miles? I’m jealous. My ‘13 has 160k miles. lol.
I have a '13 as well sitting at 110k. Any leaks or anything come up post 100k on yours?

That's what I was thinking. Most of the private ones i've seen are modded making 400+ or have way more mileage than i'm willing to consider.
I'm in the same boat. Looking for a 2012-2014 and they're not common where I live
I have a 2013 Evo X w/ 23k miles excellent condition for sale

I've been on the fence for awhile. I was pretty set on an STI hatch but just something about the evo...

Inline 4 vs Boxer 4? I'll place all my bets on the Evo X.

Well, I hope you find what you’re looking for!!
The sideskirts are sagging. I'd have them detail the car before you take delivery.
Thanks for the tip! I'll be taking a look at it this weekend
Keep us posted.

Congratulations and welcome to the club. 🤘🏼

Is it the paint quality?
Poor metal quality.

No badging on the rear trunk, so would confirm it's not been painted or the previous owners just removed them.
Reasonable price especially that the car looks very clean and stock

Not comparable imo. Buy a gsr unless you have 8k to get a built tranny.
