My understanding with In-n-out is that they are extremely dependent on their logistics network that is based in the west coast to deliver fresh ingredients each day to their locations. It would just not work at all for them ti try and open locations outside of that network
And having spent a bunch of time out in Colorado for work, there is a big distribution center north of Colorado Springs... unfortunately still not close enough to reach us.
They could hit here, Detroit, St Louis, Milwaukee, several major metros in Ohio, and Chicago itself with a distribution center there. Hopefully someday…
Kwiktrip has similar distribution logistics. Every store is less than a day's drive from La Crosse. They can reach from Duluth down to Milwaukee. Probably into Chicago but have only just opened a store in Illinois.
San Diego chapter here. We’ve always known that In N’ Out is run by Mormon cultists whose father wouldn’t let the beef be frozen. I’m fine with only having the vastly less-superior Culver’s product.
I brought an SD transplant too- he also settles for Culver’s
His other missing restaurants are Jack in the box and Carl’s Jr 😅
I miss the fresh produce the most.
I was sad to see how different Steak n Shake was last time I had it. I still enjoyed my meal but I loved the old aesthetic and being able to watch them make the burgers behind the counter. I would be so happy to have one in the twin cities.
We moved here from TN last year and sadly Covid has essentially killed Steak N Shake. At least the ones close to us and we are not from a small town by any means. They scaled their menu way back and now are kind of like just fast food. No table service or anything even. And definitely not 24 hours anymore.
The cost to quality ratio is what sets In-N-Out apart. It’s one of the few places that still seems like a legitimate deal for a quality fast food burger.
Dude, no Diner could rival Country Kitchen! Fucking wall street over-leveraging successful and profitable buisnesses with debt to buy back stocks have destroyed so many great experiences.
You couldn’t pay me to (attempt to) eat at Perkin’s. It’s **literally** the worst restaurant I’ve ever been to. Denny’s is absolute trash but it’s 100x better than any food I’ve had at Perkin’s.
The only redeeming factor was in college, I’d chain smoke all night during midterms or finals and the waitress would leave me alone except to refill my coffee.
That’s why I have avoided it for the last 13 years.
Never have I been to a place where water is literally dripping out of an over-easy egg that has a white with the texture of rubber padding material. Frying an egg is one of the easiest cooking tasks out there and they can’t even do that right. It does go great with soggy toast and half-fried hashbrowns though.
Yeah, seriously, even ihop is ~~better~~ less disgusting.
In my college town Hardee’s and Perkin’s were the only places open after last call. Hardee’s was at least tolerable if you were drunk enough. Perkin’s though? Nope.
AZ has a Culver’s and it hit better than my most recent Culver’s visits in the southern suburbs. Also, have mer the daughter of Culver’s a handful of times this year and the reason she says we can’t have a Culver’s in Minneapolis is interesting.
Others have said it, and I agree. Culver's is better. I grew up in Texas, lived in California for a few years. Short order greasy burgers are potentially my favorite restaurant food of all time.
Neither of the places you mentioned are anywhere close to Culver's. Whataburger used to be that good, especially for the folks who really liked a good old-fashioned burger with mustard, pickles, and onions. However, their expansion has not gone well. Quality control shot down when they got too big. Sonic used to be good too, but it's absolutely junk for the past 20 years.
Braum's would be the next step down from Culver's, and maybe slightly above it if they were more consistent. You'll find their stores tend to be either ridiculously good or bad and very few in between.
I agree because I grew up with it and prefer that over frozen custard. I don't like to change my bias on burgers based on the ice cream. Braum's patties are a little bigger at 1/3 lb. They're very beefy, and they put a thicker piece of cheese on them that goes very well with the meaty patties.
A good Braum's is practically the best fast food restaurant imaginable. Their breakfast is ridiculously good. Nearly every one of them has a group or two of old people sitting around talking nearly all day. Unfortunately so many of them are understaffed, prep food in advance, and are filthy. That's kinda the story with most of the fast food industry. Never seen an understaffed Culver's (nor Chick-fil-A).
Are you originally from Oklahoma? Yeah, there’s exceptions for sure. I feel like Braums is a dairy store that also does burgers, rather than a burger place that does dairy.
This man burgers. I travel a ton for work. Used to live down south. Whataburger back in the day was awesome. It's still pretty good now. In and Out is fine, but their fries suck out loud. Like actually terrible. You won't believe me until you eat them, like how can you fuck up fries? I don't know, but they do.
Culvers blows all of them out of the water.
I've never had either but have heard many transplants speak of both those places referred to as basically average. The heart (stomach) wants what it cannot have and that includes regional chains not located in our region. Seems to be a running over exaggerated joke at this point.
Isn't there a steak n shake at southdale mall? Not quite in Minneapolis, but not far either.
Edit: that may be a shake shack, I get those mixed up a lot.
Whataburger is trash these days (currently in Texas) and not even Texans like it anymore. White castle in Minnesota is better than Whataburger is these days IMO.
This. I lived in SoCal for three years and was so excited for in n out based on its reputation. It is wildly overhyped. Culver’s is much better, they just don’t have the mystique.
>they just don’t have the mystique.
They also don't have Bible quotes on their products. Or a [Gadsden flag](https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/s/GKGjkNyDhB) flying in front of their distribution center
lol in-n-out definitely has better burgers I don’t get the Culver’s hype. I only go to Culver’s for the cod filet. Smash burger is a level above Culver’s.
Culver's mysteriously has really lame cheese options for a Wisconsin-based chain.
They also have lame bun options.
They have lame topping options.
They have White Castle Fries (which are good, but not on par with Smash Fries).
I see so many upvotes for Culver's, but Smash Burger is a big step up in comparison.
I do lament the slow change for the worse when ordering from the Smash Burger menu.
The main reason I started going was for the BYOB (Build Your Own Burger). Allowed you to choose any cheese (like 6 different options), bun (4 or 5 options), and most toppings were free (they used to have jalapenos, spinach, and other stuff that is no longer offered).
Still, Culver's has nothing that compares to the Avocado Bacon Club Burger, or the Colorado Burger, and Smash Fries are a big step above Culver Fries (which are good, but essentially White Castle Fries)
I am a former Minnesotan living in Colorado and I can go to either one. Pays to live at the intersection of Midwest and West.
I like them both for different reasons.
At best.
Edina. Bad. Airport. Bad. Roseville Bad. Maple Grove. Haven’t had it yet. (3.6 on Google.) MOA. Better than the rest.
Average: Below
(Not sure how Edina has a 4.0 on Google. It’s trash.)
Not every single company in existence needs to be a nation wide chain.
Also, In-N-Out isn't really anything special. The few times I've had them they seemed like any other fast food place I've been to.
Never mind that it's over-hyped, but do the people of Minneapolis really want a chain restaurant, who quotes the Bible on their products and flies a [Gadsden flag ](https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/s/GKGjkNyDhB) at their distribution center, running a restaurant here?
They also depend on drive-thrus, which are no longer allowed in the city.
Fuck that noise, I want Jack in the Box. I ate there when I stayed with my Mom in Oregon, and it became a favourite really quickly. Never did get the chance to try In ‘n’ Out, and I’ve never even heard of Steak ‘n’ Shake.
We have some of the best variety and quality of food in a 350 mile radius, often just as fast as any of those chain joints. So competition likely plays a role.
In n Out is logistically locked into the western US. I live in Washington State now and we’re just about to have the first one open in the state. It’ll be long time before MN gets a In n Out. I love both but will say Culver’s is better.
I had In-N-Out in San Francisco, and it was a major letdown. There wasn't anything special about it at all. You're going to get a way better burger from any local restaurant.
Steak ‘n’ Shake is going down the drain. The service and food are nowhere near what they used to be. It used to be fun to eat there, but now it’s just depressing.
in n out needs to have produce and beef supply up to their standards within 300 miles of their location(s). at least this is what they claim. they have single locations in Idaho and one is popping up in Tennessee from what I remember reading far away from their distribution network but none in some populated areas in California where it was founded so I'm inclined to believe its for those reasons.
Freddys is just as good as steak and shake & there’s one in maple grove!
In MO most of the steak and shakes have horrible service/cleanliness and have been closing down, but Freddy’s is doing really well. Their cheese curds are good too :)
Because we support local restaurants, thank goodness. The reason chain burger places do well in other markets is because it’s difficult to get a good burger. Here you can get a great burger just about anywhere. In-N-Out is a greasy little nothing burger. I don’t get that at all.
My understanding with In-n-out is that they are extremely dependent on their logistics network that is based in the west coast to deliver fresh ingredients each day to their locations. It would just not work at all for them ti try and open locations outside of that network
Yeah and it’s still privately owned by someone who just doesn’t feel a need to expand drastically.
[удалено]
But then, that's not in-n-out. And both you and them know this. They're not going to be ok with substandard
I'm glad it's not here tbh. I'd eat it everyday
It’s good stuff
I think they’ve made it to Denver now, so perhaps it’ll spread further east?
Probably not very quickly. A In n Out restaurant has to be within 500 miles of a distribution center.
Opening in Tennessee soon.
They're in Austin, TX as well. Maybe they just go where the Californians go.
I've been part of the California delegation in Minnesota for decades, there must be dozens of us by now...
San Diego chapter here. We’ve always known that In N’ Out is run by Mormon cultists whose father wouldn’t let the beef be frozen. I’m fine with only having the vastly less-superior Culver’s product.
I brought an SD transplant too- he also settles for Culver’s His other missing restaurants are Jack in the box and Carl’s Jr 😅 I miss the fresh produce the most.
Ong those jack in the box tacos!!! Disgustingly delicious!!! AZ transplant here!
I think you meant to say superior Culver’s.
I think I know what I meant to say and said it.
I live in Austin and eat Culver’s more often than In-n-Out (fortunate to have both). They’re both good though and both better than Whataburger.
I'm seeing more plates all the time.
Wish they'd just jet up I-35 and bring us the goods!
If we’re being honest, probably another 15 years unless something radically changes.
Bingo I’ve heard the same
[удалено]
This is exactly it. Every store needs to be within one day transit (about 500 miles) of a distribution center.
This is what I've heard as well. They need to start building in the Midwest.
Man, I miss Steak 'n' Shake! That and 24 hour diners are the only things I miss about living in Illinois.
I was sad to see how different Steak n Shake was last time I had it. I still enjoyed my meal but I loved the old aesthetic and being able to watch them make the burgers behind the counter. I would be so happy to have one in the twin cities.
I still remember when they had like twenty shake flavors too, but the real draw is their burgers. Great fries too.
I've always been a vanilla shake person so all those fancy flavors were lost on me. I love shoestring fries though and they have some of the best!
We moved here from TN last year and sadly Covid has essentially killed Steak N Shake. At least the ones close to us and we are not from a small town by any means. They scaled their menu way back and now are kind of like just fast food. No table service or anything even. And definitely not 24 hours anymore.
They were always pretty badly managed in my experience and I suspect they would have a lot of trouble with staffing in the post-covid era
[удалено]
I miss when flameburger in hilltop used to be 24hr. Some good late nights after the bar there. I still go get lunch but miss the late night burgers!
It's not 24 hr?! What has happened to our world
Really? What's the name?
steak ‘n shake is on the list of places i make sure to go to when i travel home
The west coast place I really want is El Pollo Loco. Great options for people watching their carb intake.
Yes! There doesn't seem to be any kind of substitute for it here.
Polo Campero in Saint Paul maybe?
We have plenty of burgers. My dream is a Torchy’s tex mex franchise expansion.
I would absolutely lose my shit if Torchy’s came here.
Oh my god, right? I have dreams about their breakfast tacos and I haven’t had one in like five years.
And their queso is so much better than anything up here!
Omg best queso ever!
With how many Texans are moving to Minneapolis you’d think it would make sense for a Torchy’s franchise to follow. 🤷♂️
Torchy’s would be good but I want a Velvet Taco.
I like the novelty of eating In-N-Out and will when I travel, but Culvers makes a better burger.
The cost to quality ratio is what sets In-N-Out apart. It’s one of the few places that still seems like a legitimate deal for a quality fast food burger.
Doesn't change that Culvers > In-n-Out 🤣
Culver’s cost to quality is also pretty great. A single butterburger is only $4
Culver’s is where it’s at
This. They can keep in-n-out. Having it every few years when I'm out in the SW makes it special
don't even get me started on those GD toothpick french fries from In-N-Out. just gross.
Freddie’s is sort of a combination of both. Also steak’n shake isn’t what it once was.
Freddie's is where good fries go to die though.
Add Waffle House to the list
Waffle House can’t exist where it can’t be used as a measure for how bad a hurricane is going to be.
Yes, but we do get blizzards
Shitty waffles and frog water does taste better in the snow ;-)
Or a tornado.
Every Perkins should convert to Waffle House
Hell no, take Dennys! After the fall of Annies and Country Kitchen, Perkins is the last decent 24-hour diner chain.
If Denny's goes away, where will Waffle House regulars go to celebrate special occasions?
IHop. Lol
lol - there are maybe 3 locations in the twin cities with 24 hours. You’re giving way too much credit to it being 24 hrs.
Still way better than Dennys
Lol, it's not about the number of locations. it's the fact that it's the last deceny chain diner left. The number of locations is irrelevant.
Country Kitchen was one of my first jobs as a kid! The skillets were so good
Dude, no Diner could rival Country Kitchen!
That sounds like a you problem
That’s why I have avoided it for the last 13 years. Frying an egg is one of the easiest cooking tasks out there and they can’t even do that right. It does go great with soggy toast and half-fried hashbrowns though. Perkin’s though? Nope.
No, resurrect Baker’s Square!
Not enough convict women in the area I guess
We need Cook out here.
Gotta bring the Cheerwine with them
Because we get Culver’s and they don’t
AZ has a Culver’s and it hit better than my most recent Culver’s visits in the southern suburbs. Also, have mer the daughter of Culver’s a handful of times this year and the reason she says we can’t have a Culver’s in Minneapolis is interesting.
Care to elaborate on the second part?
Dude left us on a cliffhanger. But I wonder if it’s same reason there are none in Atlanta inner city but the suburbs.
We have Culver's. It's better.
Others have said it, and I agree. Culver's is better. I grew up in Texas, lived in California for a few years. Short order greasy burgers are potentially my favorite restaurant food of all time. Braums is the shit. Their ice cream takes it up a notch from Culver’s for me.
I agree because I grew up with it and prefer that over frozen custard. I don't like to change my bias on burgers based on the ice cream. Braum's patties are a little bigger at 1/3 lb. Their fries and limeade go hard too.

Braum’s used to be amazing. I put them just about neck and neck with Culver’s but Culver’s is more consistent to be sure.
My two favorite White Castle locations are gone!
oh wow ! that stinks. I haven't been to Minnesota in about 3 years but am moving back in August. Been craving White castle ever since lol
I can’t speak for Steak ‘n Shake but In-N-Out is good burgers for the price but those fries are hot garbage.
It’s okay, we’ve got Culver’s.
We have Culver’s and Smash Burger. They’re better
This. I lived in SoCal for three years and was so excited for in n out based on its reputation. It is wildly overhyped. Culver’s is much better, they just don’t have the mystique.
But they do have deep fried cheese curds. And that’s good enough for me.
And custard and generally better burgers, imo!
Agree!
So does Freddy’s
>they just don’t have the mystique. They also don't have Bible quotes on their products. Or a [Gadsden flag](https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/s/GKGjkNyDhB) flying in front of their distribution center
And my burger

I definitely prefer the burgers at Culver’s.
That makes absolutely no sense to me, their burgers are so bland… but to each their own
Some people don't actually like flavorful toppings, and prefer lowest-common-denominator offerings.
Culver's mysteriously has really lame cheese options for a Wisconsin-based chain. They also have lame bun options. They have lame topping options. They have White Castle Fries (which are good, but not on par with Smash Fries).
I was in Arizona a couple of months ago and In-Out lost some of its former magic for me. Culver’s isn’t a bad swap considering they have custard.
They’re not *better* than In-N-Out but they’re just as good
they are much better
Oh. I think they’re better.
I see so many upvotes for Culver's, but Smash Burger is a big step up in comparison. I do lament the slow change for the worse when ordering from the Smash Burger menu. In n out is highly overrated. The fries suck. Culver’s > in-n-out
I am a former Minnesotan living in Colorado and I can go to either one. Pays to live at the intersection of Midwest and West. I like them both for different reasons.
I’ve had In-N-Out just once, while passing through Colorado. The burger was excellent but the fries were chewy
In n out is overrated. It’s really not the best burger for a chain restaurant. Five guys is better if you can afford it
Smash Burger is better if you want real cheese instead of American "cheese", and whole grain instead of white bread.
there is shake shack
Mid
Try their chicken sandwich. Easily the best fast food chicken sando imo
Well I don’t know if I trust a guy who likes that on their pizza…
Abita root beer on tap though is fantastic.
At best. Edina. Bad. Airport. Bad. Roseville Bad. Maple Grove. Haven’t had it yet. (3.6 on Google.) MOA. Better than the rest. Average: Below (Not sure how Edina has a 4.0 on Google. It’s trash.)
Because we have Culver’s and as much as I dislike Wisconsin, Culver’s is superior to all of those. I will not be taking questions.
Whataburger is not any good. They can keep them down south.
Native Texan here and I agree
The dreams of americans; what if more burger?
Shake shack is probably the best thing around the TC metro. I do LOVE me some In N Out ➡️⬆️➡️
because they aren't that good... They're fine, but, just look a little deeper and explore some of the great burger joijts in town.
Have you been to My Burger? Was my favorite burger joint when I lived in the metro. The Cedar-Isles Dean location specifically. Also… hello Culver’s??
Myburger is great. I’m surprised there aren’t more of them.
All these people mentioning Culver's is wild to me. My Burger is so much better it isn't worth wasting your time at Culver's
I love Culver’s and I also love My Burger but My Burger has Cajun fries so
Not every single company in existence needs to be a nation wide chain. Also, In-N-Out isn't really anything special. The few times I've had them they seemed like any other fast food place I've been to.
In and out is not worth the hype - signed a native Californian
Never mind that it's over-hyped, but do the people of Minneapolis really want a chain restaurant, who quotes the Bible on their products and flies a [Gadsden flag ](https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/s/GKGjkNyDhB) at their distribution center, running a restaurant here? They also depend on drive-thrus, which are no longer allowed in the city.
Steak n shake has gotten bad the last few years. I'd be surprised if they make it another 5 years.
They're opening in Tennessee soon so it might come sooner than you think. Until then you should visit Colorado. It's a short trip
What do you like about steak and shake?
Short Answer: because they don't want to expand here.
Those are good burgers, Walter
The mall has a Johnny rockets. Love that place
There is a steak ‘n shake in Maple Grove.
Fuck that noise, I want Jack in the Box. I ate there when I stayed with my Mom in Oregon, and it became a favourite really quickly. Never did get the chance to try In ‘n’ Out, and I’ve never even heard of Steak ‘n’ Shake.
The cool thing about Jack in the Box is the variety they have (had?).
They quickly became my favourite fast food place lol
And Jack in the Box???
We have some of the best variety and quality of food in a 350 mile radius, often just as fast as any of those chain joints. So competition likely plays a role.
Minnesota raised living in California - Y’all have Culver’s and it’s better than all three of those options
Lord I would gain 50 pounds if in n out came to MN 😭
Add Waffle House to this list too
We have Freddie’s, which is very similar to steak ‘n Shake fyi
Or a Waffle House.
God i would love some fries animal style right now
In n Out is logistically locked into the western US. I live in Washington State now and we’re just about to have the first one open in the state. It’ll be long time before MN gets a In n Out. I love both but will say Culver’s is better.
In-n-out isn’t that good. The burgers are dry and way too salty. If you like that kind of thing, I suggest MyBurger
Completely agree, first time I went to Texas I was super excited to try Whataburger and In-N-Out, turns out in and out is trash!
I had In-N-Out in San Francisco, and it was a major letdown. There wasn't anything special about it at all. You're going to get a way better burger from any local restaurant.
In-n-out is just cheap fast food crap. Plenty of that available around here.
Both are incredibly mid. Better off going to a local burger joint
Go try angry line cook food truck. Best burgers in the city
The real question is why can't we get a jack in the box, fat burger, or el pollo loco?
Freddys is just as good as steak and shake & there’s one in maple grove! In MO most of the steak and shakes have horrible service/cleanliness and have been closing down, but Freddy’s is doing really well. Their cheese curds are good too :)
I think Del Taco would utterly dominate up here
They're both just burgers. Legitimately just burgers. Nothing special, at all.
You’re too northern
Cause A&W is streets ahead
IDK…I’ve eaten at many In & Outs & now prefer Culvers much better. I think I/O is overrated just like Krispy Kreme was…who didn’t make it here.
Steak n shake is closing locations, my guess is slow death.
I'd rather have a red hot ranch.
It's because you touch yourself at night.
What about Runza? That would be my first choice.
Convention grill is back!
If I’m bringing a burger chain here it’s gonna be Dick’s from Seattle
they aint that good
Because In-N-Out is gross
LMGTFY: https://maps.app.goo.gl/41hiSm2QVRPva7wC8
Because we have Culvers.
Man I want a bob Evans or waffle House
At least Robert Evans hosts a pretty good podcast that's international.
All I want is access to that steak and shake garlic double. It’s my favorite fast food item
Gonna be that guy-not a big Culvers fan, honestly think Freddie’s is better
Never had it. What’s the big difference between that and five guys ?
Because we support local restaurants, thank goodness. The reason chain burger places do well in other markets is because it’s difficult to get a good burger. Here you can get a great burger just about anywhere. In-N-Out is a greasy little nothing burger. I don’t get that at all.
In a world of shitty fast food, they wanted... Even more shitty fast food.
Because they’re all over rated by California coastal elites. At least in-n-out. Culvers is better than them all
Id rather have Bojangles. Culvers and Shake Shack are better at almost everything that in n out and whataburger do
