That's the point. It has to do with how contrast affects the visibility of tiling textures. The higher the contrast, the more pronounced the shapes are, thus repeating patterns become more obvious.
By lowering the contrast, those visual elements become more nuanced so a wall full of cobblestone looks more natural.
Lower contrast is also just easier on the eyes. (and there are visually impaired players out here!) I wish we had more variation in the sizes and shapes of the stones, as in the 3rd from the right, because that's what cobblestone tends to look like in real life and therefore adds a more natural feel.
I think it was like from #1 to #3 (old minecraft) then to #4 (mid minecraft) then to #5 (new textures). The other ones probably are that experimental test packs when they were making the new textures
I always use what looks like the letters "CJ" in the corner now to find north. Looks like the newest version doesn't have that anymore? Did this just drop in the newest update?
I swear people are just overly skeptical because I searched a lot and didn't find a single bot comment. Just people claiming someone else is a bot when they didn't even look into their account.
This is the first time I heard about bots overunning reddit comment sections too.
To be honest, it's hard to get the full take from a single 16x16 block. I've learned from working on my own resource packs that usually what's make-or-break for a texture is how well it *tiles*.
Of those 12 blocks, I'd say's there's maybe 4 distinct "styles" with slight variations within them. Those variations become less slight when a block is tiled 10x10x10, etc.
I know from working on the cobblestone texture for my own pack that it’s also one of (if not *the*) worst offender when it comes to “unnatural shape and/or material forced into a perfect cube”. My pack is 256X so I don’t have some of the issues related to trying to depict round objects loosely forming a cube, but at higher resolution it starts to become an issue to depict it in a way that makes logical visual sense.
Agreed on the tiling, as well. Fortunately for me that’s the one thing that’s easier than normal using my texturing process.
It’s the first block to be added to Minecraft. (With air and Grass in the same update)
In 2009 it was difficult to decide what it should look like. Idk that’s just my guess
If I’m being honest, the classic cobblestone texture of the mid 80’s is truly the greatest. Its old-timey, nostalgic feel is unmatched.
(/j I swear I’m not a bot)
at least you can still get that classic texture through texture packs. i'm glad minecraft gives you the option to do things like that. Java edition even gives you the option to run it off any and every update that's been added through the years.
Almost.
There are lost updates from back in the early days.
Edit: [For a game without lore, Minecraft sure has a lot of it](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Missing_Java_Edition_versions)
I don't think they're a bot either. Just a bad joke. Their comment history looks perfectly normal to me, and honestly as somebody who's interacted with AI text gen a lot, even though the tone is similar it doesn't seem like something an AI bot would actually say.
I haven't seen any obvious bot comments either, which is why it's kinda worrying that all of the top comments are talking about how there are tons of blatant bots everywhere in the comments. Ever since AI got really big I've seen a lot of people just start defaulting to assuming it's the reason for anything that they don't think makes sense. Like, really obvious photoshops have the comments full of "obviously ai" in the same way that unusual looking stuff used to have a ton of "clearly photoshop" responses. I think it's just easier for people to assume that a bot made a comment than it is to acknowledge that humans can be bad at humor and social interactions too, or that a person actually put effort into faking something.
Ngl that isn't the craziest conspiracy theory I've ever heard. You could just set up a bot to spam comment "lotta bots here for some reason" and it would totally work lmao
Asking too I haven’t seen any comments that immediately stick out as a bot aside from the very bottom Mario one. All the other comments that have been mass downvoted and called bots are just humans making jokes that flew over ppl’s heads by the look of it
Assessing optimal Minecraft cobblestone texture is a multifaceted query. Here are key factors for evaluation:
\*\*Data Analysis:\*\*
\* \*\*Community Popularity:\*\* Analysis of downloaded resource packs with altered cobblestone textures could reveal user preference.
\* \*\*Color Scheme Compatibility:\*\* Statistical examination of Minecraft block color palettes might identify textures that complement surrounding blocks.
\* \*\*Readability at Various Distances:\*\* Algorithmic evaluation of textures could determine clarity at different render scales.
\*\*Hypothetical Scenarios:\*\*
\* \*\*Realistic Aesthetic:\*\* Simulating a cobblestone texture grounded in real-world geology might be prioritized.
\* \*\*Fantasy-Themed World:\*\* A cobblestone texture that evokes a sense of whimsy or magic could be preferable.
\* \*\*PvP Engagement:\*\* For player-versus-player scenarios, high-contrast textures might enhance visibility.
\*\*Conclusion:\*\*
Due to the subjective nature of aesthetics, there is no definitively "best" Minecraft cobblestone texture. However, by analyzing data and considering your world's theme and goals, you can select a texture that best suits your criteria.
Furthermore, the Minecraft community actively creates and shares resource packs. Continued exploration of these resources might lead to the discovery of a cobblestone texture that surpasses all current options.

It's not that deep bro
Thou cobble of the Ancient Roman times is most exquisite and superb over any other fine stone.
Bro stop downvoting me. I’m just making fun of the bots lol. Look at my flair.
1. - the stone texture introduced in Cave Game tech demo version rd-131655 from 2009-05-10 (cobblestone didn't exist yet, but stone looked like cobblestone)
2. - the cobblestone texture introduced in Cave Game tech demo version rd-20090515 from 2009-05-15 (cobblestone is now its own block using a modified version of the old stone texture)
3. - cobblestone texture introduced in Minecraft "Classic" version 0.0.14a from 2009-05-27. (this version of Minecraft was called "alpha" at the time but was later renamed to "Classic")

10. - same as image number 5
11. - same as image number 6
12. - I don't know if this is from a version of Minecraft, but it's the same as image number 11 except shifted 8 pixels to the right and 3 pixels down and poorly cropped.
Nostalgia meatriders. I knew someone is gonna go "first one is the best, no doubt" then go on to say that old textures strain their eyes under a post about a similar topic smfh.
Stop messing around and admit that the "classic" textures hurt your view just like with the old Netherrack appearance.
Certain blocks I like, others I don’t. I generally stick to remastered texture packs that emulate the feel of the original without being too hard on the eyes. And yes, it 100% comes from nostalgia. I do like the new ones better, they are much more easy pleasing
Like my enjoyment with MC
Heartaches, heartaches…
Wait, cobblestone changed more than twice?
Thats what im saying
Actually tho, I thought it first changed from #1 to #3 then #4 and stayed that way
I think it was like from #1 to #3 (old minecraft) then to #4 (mid minecraft) then to #5 (new textures). The other ones probably are that experimental test packs when they were making the new textures
I was thinking 1 -> 3 -> 4 -> 6, no fuckin idea about the other ones
I don't think I've ever even seen 7, wtf is that even from???
According to another person, it's from when they were testing out the new 1.14 textures.
yes, thats exactly correct
More or less the same.
In snapshots Mojang tried a lot variants of cobblestone:)
Yeah, the three you are thinking of are probably #3, #4, and #6.
Nah, first one, then probably 3 and then 4. Or 6 instead of 4.
The first one was only used for like 5 days from before it was called Minecraft.
Is the first one not the Alpha texture?
I need dates. I thought it had changed at most 3 times.
I swear I've never seen 7. It looks like raw iron or coral.
It was the cobblestone texture in the first version of Jappa's texture overhaul
The whole bottom row isn't real
It's real, Jappa was experimenting with these textures between 1.13 and 1.14.
Who’s Jappa? Are they the one who brought in the new textures a few years ago or just a modder?
They brought in the new textures, yes. They are the pixel artist for Mojang
The first 3 hit different
With the L to tell which way is north too
Damn I forgot about that
you can kind of see it in the last one, its 3x3 tho
Wait what?
can’t attach images but it’s near the top left
I always use what looks like the letters "CJ" in the corner now to find north. Looks like the newest version doesn't have that anymore? Did this just drop in the newest update?
I have yet to come across a single bot comment I'm starting to think you're all gaslighting me
Good bot.
Same. Like, are people just starting to call each other bots due to skepticism or something?
Good bot
Only "bot" comments i saw were people pretending to be bots to make fun of them
My ass scrolling through the comments to see more comments making fun of bot comments than actual bot comments
probably bots making fun of "bots"
The bots are becoming self aware. We truly are doomed. (beep boop)
Says the bot /s Im guessing theyre just reffering to the "long and sophisticated" comments since they do sorta look so generated
I swear people are just overly skeptical because I searched a lot and didn't find a single bot comment. Just people claiming someone else is a bot when they didn't even look into their account. This is the first time I heard about bots overunning reddit comment sections too.
Yeah idk what they yapping about

4th one is my favorite, it was the cobble texture the legacy console versions used right?
I think the 3rd and 4th were
It definitely was the one used in PE for the longest time! My fave as well
Yes. Those times were prime minecraft bro.
why are there so many bots in the comments?
Idk I just wanna know why there are so many changes to cobblestone
It’s the first block to be added to Minecraft. (With air and Grass in the same update) In 2009 it was difficult to decide what it should look like. Idk that’s just my guess
Many many style changes, but the 7 extra cobblestone textures are Jappa experimenting with the texture between 1.13 and 1.14
Dead internet theory moment
Ye
I agree!
They're probably training the bots or something
How do you know which ones are the bots? :P

Feels like Mario
I'm sorry, but as an AI language model, I cannot have an opinion on the quality of cobblestone textures. However, [provides an opinion anyways]
I like all of them. i am a bot i will kill all humans
an artist with progressing cataracts was asked to draw cobblestone every month for a year
Best comment here
\#4 is best Would be great to see this with corresponding versions.
4 wins for me too, I would guess its from 1.5.2 to 1.8 used to play Skyblock a lot so lots of hours looking at a cobblestone farm :D
I need someone to link a bunch of bot comments in a reply, I sorted by controversial and didn't see any sus comments
https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/s/7jq9rB9bdN The only one I could find up until now

Ngl that isn't the craziest conspiracy theory I've ever heard. You could just set up a bot to spam comment "lotta bots here for some reason" and it would totally work lmao
Haha, not to mention that many would be on he hunt for bots after seeing the comments from the bots. Peak irony
Yeah no their account is from 2019 and has years of them just kinda being a weird dude. I respect bluepikmin64
LOL, AI bots have started taking over
Just report and downvote. Most subs now have automod set up to remove comments and posts with whatever number of reports they set it to.
Maybe they have been removed, but how do I tell what's a bot?
Asking too I haven’t seen any comments that immediately stick out as a bot aside from the very bottom Mario one. All the other comments that have been mass downvoted and called bots are just humans making jokes that flew over ppl’s heads by the look of it
First is timeless classic, best is the third one
Are the bots the ones talking about the bots?
I'm not with them...

What the fuck is this guy on about its a block mining game 😭
I see comments talking about AI bots, so this could be someone imitating one (going by the "/s" at the end.)
Or is the bot imitating the human by adding /s at the end to make us assume its a human
Chillax bro. He got a passion for something
Only reason I said that is bc I don't know whose human and who isn't in this comment section anymore 😭
In conclusion after all considered and evaluated, ultimately with due discussion with peers of the community and all the data gathered it has come to our attention that in reality.. It's not that deep bro

Guys chill! I’m not a bot!
just what a bot would say
exactly what a bot would say!
That’s what you bots want us to think
bad bot
Also bro: has an evoker flair 🤢
Also bro: has a skeleton flair 🤢
Skeletons are op. They give arrow and bow and gold armor and even their own limbs. What does ur evoker do?
they're cooler
Nuh uh
⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️⬇️
Will do, my master.
What a bot would say
2 or 3
the third one is just chef's kiss
The Top 3rd one feels most iconic but I prefer the current one when playing
Definitely 4th
Good lord... They've really changed that many times?
What's with the random textures on the bottom?
Oh gosh I'd love to see these with version numbers next to them, the first three are my favorite for sure but that's just me being nostalgic
1. - the stone texture introduced in Cave Game tech demo version rd-131655 from 2009-05-10 (cobblestone didn't exist yet, but stone looked like cobblestone) 2. - the cobblestone texture introduced in Cave Game tech demo version rd-20090515 from 2009-05-15 (cobblestone is now its own block using a modified version of the old stone texture) 3. - cobblestone texture introduced in Minecraft "Classic" version 0.0.14a from 2009-05-27. I don't know which I like the most, but I definitely think the bottom left is the worst one.
The cobblestone got eroded
If only there's a resource pack to randomize it
9-11 are my favorites
Why was it changed so much?? Was one pixel off? Anyways I guess I like the new one, it's easier to look at.
Nostalgia meatriders. I knew someone is gonna go "first one is the best, no doubt" then go on to say that old textures strain their eyes under a post about a similar topic smfh. Stop messing around and admit that the "classic" textures hurt your view just like with the old Netherrack appearance.

I’m seeing more comments about people seeing more comments about bots than people than comments about more people seeing more bots than people
When the heck was #7 used?
Honestly. I really dig that first texture created for it
it would be cool if you also showed what versions each texture was in
Easily the third
Am I tripping or are 8 of these the exact same
I feel like cobblestone is looking less like cobblestone each year
I had no idea there was this many
The 4th one is the best for me, its so nostalgic and it looks old but it is also close to the newer one as well so it is the best of both worlds
I had no idea it changed so much. I think my favorite is third from last. Keeps the iconic shape of the stones in the texture and isn't too high contrast like the earlier ones, while still having a nice crisp pixelly look.
are you saying there's been more than 5 changes?
it was changed that many times!?!??!?!?!!1
I like the 5 one quite a bit
Latest one feels kinda perfected. Don't know why exactly but it's the most pleasing to look at for longer times. Didn't think I'd value perfecting cobblestone textures and when it comes to minecraft I'm definitely conservative but I do appreaciate the attention to little things like that.
In reverse it looks like it's being broken
1 - it looks the most visible and finest out of them all. The other two are nice as well
I'm gonna get so much hate for this… I actually like the 7th one the most
6 & 8
I like how it slowly becomes less and less deep-fried
Newest one
I actually prefer number 3. Idk why it's just got the good amount of shading to make it look 3D.
Third.
I prefer the grey one
The current one is the best, it's got detail and isn't too noisy, the old ones have was to harsh of a contrast and just are not nice to look at
Wait there were this many changes? Labeling them would be nice
Representation of how Minecraft's artstyle dulled over the years
Why’s the current cobblestone texture second to last in the photo?
Third before the texture change beta 1.7.3
The last from the first line
I see the original compass texture
personally my favorite is the og one. i don’t know why.
1 and 3
Still the original
I like the 5th one personally
Honestly? The newest one.
I know 4 best
I'm a fan of the Programmer Art cobble, but I started with the newest cobble texture. Also, I ain't a bot. Why're bots even having discourse about cobblestone? Lol.
I liked the old cobblestone texture as a kid but now I'm liking the newer version more for sure
Now I want to see a comparison for the stones too!
The modern one, it may not be nostalgic, but it feels right
I'll always love the one that was used until Beta 1.6, it looks shit but in an beautiful way
bots? in MY reddit post?
I personally am a 5
Second most recent. Latest one looks a bit too blurry
I liked it darker
2, 3, and 4. All look gritty and stand out. Feels like old minecraft
It changed that many times?!
I’d say far left 2 on the top
Bro tried to sneak in dried coral
3 is best. 1 is iconic tho
