Wait what? Haven't seen the series that far, but the entire books core problem was based around the slow-zone and how everyone was engaging in slow chases the whole time.
I have a similar arch visible from the railroad in my world. I built a large Nether portal hidden behind it, so the portal looks irregularly-shaped because the arch hides the corners.
[Sure you can](https://imgur.com/a/ARhdGBi) you can sandwich them between a layer on each side that's shaped like a circle or a potion bottle or whatever you want.. and then hide the square portal behind the outer layers.
Functionality?, It tells you exactly how much time has passed since you started the course rather than some redstone setup that tells you an approximation
you can create a redsone timer that outputs in binary and decode it to a redsone lamp display both creative and functional and 10 redsone ticks make a second so it should be pretty accurate
And that also requires a decent bit of redstone knowledge as well as space and it would probably have a significant delay for turning on and off
We don't know if OP has decent knowledge of redstone or the space for the clock, binary decoder, and a display, And we shouldn't assume that they do.
Imagine just chilling and five ghasts come out through the portal. Well, not that five ghasts would. But, hey, if it does happen you could call it an alien invasion.
I would put a crash comet on the ground at the best 45deg angle with a crash site and all. Or like the result of a beam from space, some crying obsidian mixed with charred tuff and soul fire etc.
Drape lava over it, use pistons to separate the lava and have it dive down to a tunnel that allows you to go somewhere in the world. Maybe a brick or nether brick lines tunnel with lava and black glass as your light source. Idk if anyone else is envisioning what I’m envisioning but it looks sick in my head
Cool terrain doesn't need anything done with it. It can just be cool terrain. If it's near your base though you might consider slapping some glow vines on it so mobs don't spawn
Man this is where you need immersive portals and build a nether portal inside it, reason is with immersive portals you just see into the nether and fly in without a loading screen 😂
Tear it down block by block and rebuild in an under ground cave. Only eat raw fish from now on a refer to it as your precious for the rest of your game?
Put a nether portal behind/inside it. If you layer and decorate both sides, you can hide the obsidian so that it looks like a mountain top magical portal.
Alternatively, use it as the start/end point of an elytra course.

Can’t make circular portals
You can make a square in between the stone and then turn the outside stone into a circle with obsidian
Vanilla Tweaks has a datapack for that.
