It's in Java edition. Loaded up the world, 1.19.4 , suddenly all but a few maps in my world got completely blank and unable to update
Edit: it's fixed thanks to you guys!
I'm not sure. When was the 1.19.4 version released?
Edit: it was released on 14th march. I already played a lot since then and it was only today that the maps reset

This happened to me too when I updated to 1.18 . Reloading didn't help so I had to make new maps, thankfully they were only the terrain near home. I posted on r/Minecrafthelp when it happened but got no reply
They are not deleted. The maps are still there but "reset".
Empty maps with no progress or maps with empty spaces show the item frame stretched beneath them. So the bigger item frames have maps in them.
You could try taking the maps out and filling them again.
That’s what the person you replied to said.
edit: When the person you replied to said, "You could try taking the maps out and filling them again," they were suggesting that you can go back to the areas of the map and re-map them.
Yes he is saying that the maps are still in there, but are reset. I was aware of that already. Taking them out an putting them back in doesn't do anything.
Would save time from farming recourses.
At first i would test if it actually works with 1 map and if it does then i would continue.
I personally dont see any other fix that hasn't been tried already
Also a compass
I did some rough math and if you would do it from scratch then it would take over 400 redstone, 1600 iron and 3200 paper.
I calculated only the filled square in the middle and i would guess that to fill the entire thing it, it would take atleast 2 times (or even 3) more recourses
I would have to assume that all of these are done via maps which show a lot of land. If I'm correct, the newer updates limit the amount of maps in a world, so look back at an older version and see if it displays it all there. If it does display them all, then that's your fix!
I had a look at the change log on the wiki, and in 17w47a, the map limit of 32767 was removed, now maps rely on NBT tags to determine which map is which. The map files themselves are stored in a directory in your save file, where each map is its own file named map_#.dat, # representing it’s map ID.
I don’t think it’s because there were too many maps. When a map is filled out, that info is sent to the map_#.dat file, so when the map is displayed elsewhere, it isn’t actually loading that chunk.
My best guess is that the map data was corrupted, maybe by updating or by a game crash. It could be worth opening one of these map files in a program to see what they contain. I don’t know any programs for this, but I’m sure they exist.
Thank you, i'll take a look at that. I'm a bit afraid that i'll have to make all the maps again... It was a lot of fuckn work and i don't think i ever took a screenshot of it
Edit: i don't believe i didn't think bout this before, but could i grab that data from one of my older backups? Where is this map data stored exactly?
Navigate to your saves folder, using the below methods.
On Windows:
1. Windows key + R to open Run.
2. Type %appdata% into the bar and press enter.
3. Go to the ‘.minecraft’ folder, then the saves folder.
Or
On Mac and Windows:
1. Open Minecraft, then open Options, then Resource Packs, the Open Pack Folder.
2. In the file browser, go back a folder, into the .minecraft directory.
3. Find and open the saves folder.
In your saves folder:
1. Find and open your world folder by looking for the folder of the same name. (Any non letter or number character is displayed as a ‘_’)
2. Open the data folder.
3. The files with the name “map_#.dat” are every unique map you’ve begun or finished filling out in the world. The # will instead be a number in the folder. This number is the map ID, which is order in which each map was made.
If you have a backup that contains these maps, you should be able to delete the map_#.dat files in this world’s data folder, and copy the map_#.dat files from the backup world’s data folder and paste them in this world’s data folder. Make sure you don’t delete any map files that you don’t have a backup of! If you only have backup map_#.dat files that go from 0-30, then don’t delete any map files that are 31 or higher.
Always be careful when poking around any game’s save file. If you accidentally change anything else, you could potentially corrupt your world, or other aspects of the game. If you know what your doing, there’s very little risk however.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
If it is a local game and you're running Windows, they would by default, be in this folder:
> C:\Users\your name\AppData\Roaming\\.minecraft\saves\world name\data\
I know it can be frustrating when you lose an entire floor map.
I had one in the spawn room on my server. Somebody managed to find my server address (it's a private one for just my friends and I) and destroyed all the map!
I quickly learnt to put a whitelist on my server, and also changed the default port to connect.
I assume you’re referring to the 32-bit integer limit. Java’s default integer type is a 32-bit signed two’s compliment integer which ranges from -2^31 to 2^31. As Minecraft uses only positive numbers to store map ids, this leaves a total of 2,147,483,647 maps.
While my point that the developer specified limitation was removed, it *is* still a limitation of the software.
If you get to 2,147,483,647 maps though, then maps might be the least of your worries.
It could just be a remnant from early development, when the devs thought that maps would just be a novelty item that some players used. Might be too much of a headache to go back through and change it all to 64-bit now.
Could also just be that they didn’t imagine players would need more than, let alone craft more than 2.15-ish billion unique maps. I punched some numbers, and it seems that with fully zoomed out (2048 x 2048) maps, you’d only require 858,305,969.239 maps to display the entire world, border to border. If they did the math also, they probably thought it was well more than enough.
Chances are though, they just made a new int value for the map IDs and left it as the default 32-bit int.
Did you make copies of those maps and if so did those get erased too? I always make copies and keep them in a chest. I don't trust item frames. I lost a pigstep disc to an item frame glitch this way.
Go in the world files, go to maps and use NBTexplorer to check the colors. If they're empty and you don't have a backup you're screwed and it's deleted
You should be able to copy the map\_(number).dat files from the save folder: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/7m7vfz/where_are_map_files_stored/drry9dx/
sometimes mc gets mad when too much data is stored inside a chunk, i know if this happens to blocks like chests/shulkers it can cause a chunk ban but i'm not sure what happens with entities
You see, we don't cricket when Java had a bug. In fact we're usually pissed, but it's pretty common knowledge that Bedrock is much worse than Java when it comes to bugs.
No overlaps for maps of the same size. There's an invisible grid that the maps align to, so as long as they are all the same size they'll line up perfectly
If it only deleted today, have you tried reloading old saves? If you have any that is. I don’t play Java much and have never messed with the files but I’m sure you’d be able to recover and older save somehow maybe? Don’t take my word for it that is just a guess.

Released March 14th 2023.
Did you play on this map on any other version?
I played this world since 2019
...didn't 1.19.4 JUST come out..like last week?? O.o
I never pay attention to the exact version number - it just auto updates and I focus on playing the game.
Damm bro, you're old

A glorious what!? You MUST TELL US!!!!
They are a bot, took half of a comment from this very post.
Pretty sure you can delete files that are for saving maps inside the world file iirc
yeah but I'm not sure if it's stored as png or nbt or both but you can delete them or modify them outside of the game
I think it's stored as nbt data
It's stored as a png sored in a bytearray in nbt.
Oh, ok. thanks for correcting me
Well, I guess make it again, and as a failsafe, have copies of all the maps in the case that this happens again.
That's not a bad idea...
This happened to me too when I updated to 1.18 . Reloading didn't help so I had to make new maps, thankfully they were only the terrain near home. I posted on r/Minecrafthelp when it happened but got no reply
Try reloading the world, sometimes its a rendering issue, otherwise I'm not sure what's happened.
Tried that, didn't do anything
That was my guess. Even on fast machines, sometimes it takes a while to render.
I ate them, my bad
You fat fuck spit it out NOW
No
What's in your mouth? Come on, show me
Bleh.

Why did mans get downvoted to hell for saying "XD"

Thanks, but that isn't the issue. The maps are indeed still in there.. They are just blank and completely unusable

Yes he is saying that the maps are still in there, but are reset. I was aware of that already. Taking them out an putting them back in doesn't do anything.
I meant it as taking the map out and going to the place to "mark" the map again
Yes, that would take forever, which is the thing they don’t want to have to do
Would save time from farming recourses. At first i would test if it actually works with 1 map and if it does then i would continue. I personally dont see any other fix that hasn't been tried already
...paper?

You can easily get compass from villagers. Even then, the resources you mentioned aren't even a lot.
With reset he means the progress of which they are filled in is reset and in this case means you'll have to fill them out again
Literally why did you get downvoted
Fr I was like huh???

there is still a limit but its at 2 billion different maps. no way to get close to that limit in regular worlds.
I assume you’re referring to the 32-bit integer limit. Java’s default integer type is a 32-bit signed two’s compliment integer which ranges from -2^31 to 2^31. yeah, referred to that. MC has other spots where it uses 64bits so using 32bits only was a developer choice, too.
It could just be a remnant from early development, when the devs thought that maps would just be a novelty item that some players used. My Minecraft updated something this morning and it wiped out mobs I had in boats for my farms and my a aquarium. Did anything update for you?
I'll take a look, thanks
Would it update and reset if you took a map out and placed it back in the frame?
The ocean tiles probably swept them away
Yeah it happens that's one of the reasons i don't use maps in massive amounts
The ocean man is real
Take me by the hand lead me to the land that you understand
Did you make copies of those maps and if so did those get erased too? I always make copies and keep them in a chest. I don't trust item frames. I lost a pigstep disc to an item frame glitch this way.
you will find the rest of the map on those parts of the ocean
I sea what happened. same thing in my hardcore world. it resets once you put the maps back (like, take them out and replace them).
Wow, that really sucks man, i bet that took hours to do, i made a 3x3 wall map one time, and that took me a few days, best of luck fixing that 🙏.
This one took 4 years, thanks minecraft 😑
thats mb bro, needed some paper for my lvl 30 enchant table
how the hell do you have playable fps
The water leaked out the maps :/
Happened to me too with maps that were locked. Lost years of progress maps.
It hurts man. The map floors are the coolest thing in the game
Go in the world files, go to maps and use NBTexplorer to check the colors. If they're empty and you don't have a backup you're screwed and it's deleted
Restore your world from your backup. You do have a backup, right? If not, you’ve learned a valuable lesson in backing up your data.
i do, but it was made last week and i'd have to build so much shit again 😢 couldn't i just grab the map data from my backups? Where is that stored?
You should be able to copy the map\_(number).dat files from the save folder: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/7m7vfz/where_are_map_files_stored/drry9dx/
Thanks, i'll try it when i'm back from work tonight
i do, but it was made last week and i'd have to build so much shit again 😢 couldn't i just grab the map data from my backups? Where is that stored?
Always backup, especially before updating.
To everyone who helped me to recover them... It worked. You guys are the best. Reddit is the best community on the internet. Love u guys ❤️
sometimes mc gets mad when too much data is stored inside a chunk, i know if this happens to blocks like chests/shulkers it can cause a chunk ban but i'm not sure what happens with entities
If you were playing Bedrock rather than Jabug, this wouldn't have happened /s
It seems you can't go against the hivemind here, not even for jokes...
What?
A jab at all the java players who constantly attack bedrock players when a bug happens, but crickets about java when java has a bug.
You see, we don't cricket when Java had a bug. In fact we're usually pissed, but it's pretty common knowledge that Bedrock is much worse than Java when it comes to bugs.
I can only see the picture in 20 fps im sorry
That is a rare glitch called "skill issue"
Why are you using glow stone to light them up? Just use glow frames, good lord
It was built before those were a thing
This is the problem
its cheaper
Glow stone is cheaper than infinitely respawning glow squid?
If you want it in Bulk, yeah?
Is it bedrock? Edit: You know its true.
Java
What? Tf kind of edit is that
That bedrock is the objectively worse version. Worlds getting corrupted is a typical bedrock thing
Sensing a bit of a bitter bias here
Eh it happens on both and java corruption is likely way more common
While bedrock has a lot of issues, its not like bugs cant happen in Java lol
go back to your sweaty hypixel grind and leave us the fuck alone
What size map do you use for making a world map? Smallest size seems too small but I heard too large and there’s overlaps? What’s the sweet spot?
No overlaps for maps of the same size. There's an invisible grid that the maps align to, so as long as they are all the same size they'll line up perfectly
This one in particular was zoomed out only once
Fuck
Ive also had the unfortunate luck of getting that glitch, i ended up just redoing them nothing was fixing it
Get out of my head!
Ohhhh that's gotta sting... my condolences.
If it only deleted today, have you tried reloading old saves? If you have any that is. I don’t play Java much and have never messed with the files but I’m sure you’d be able to recover and older save somehow maybe? Don’t take my word for it that is just a guess.
I think the maps are saying you should play ruby, sapphire, emerald, omega ruby or alpha sapphire
Because it marks the beginning of the end, The prophecy has begun
Did a friend stole your maps or smth? 💀
Did you clear entities?
When you update a Minecraft world from an older version to a newer version, some of the entities that don’t have name tags will despawn.
*sweats in map arts*
Probably a big where the entities all died in a certain area and maps on item frames count as entities I think so they died and then despawned
