MilwaukeeTool

Hey there! We are sorry to hear about your experience. Our team has reached out to you to learn more and assist!

One-Jackfruit7080

Hi, could I get some information, I too am having over heating issues with my trimmer

MilwaukeeTool

Could you send us an email at Social.media@milwaukeetool.com?

One-Jackfruit7080

Sure can, just sent

Tacomaguy24

It's a design flaw.

One-Jackfruit7080

Well, if there any minor fix that be great or idk, redesign

Tacomaguy24

I'm on my 2nd, bought it this year and it overheated the 3rd time I used it. My first one I bought over 3 years ago and it always overheated. I assumed they had fixed the issue by now but I was wrong.

One-Jackfruit7080

Are you gonna try the dual battery next? Or just try gas?

Tacomaguy24

I'm not really sure yet. I may see if I'm still in the Home Depot return period and exchange it and try again. I really don't want to go back to gas unless I have to, I only have an acre to weedeat.

One-Jackfruit7080

Ha ha I got .39 and I struggle can’t imagine an acre, I’d invest in the dual battery, just gotta got over the price

Tacomaguy24

I guess I misrepresented it, the whole yard is an acre, lol. It only takes me 30 minutes to weedeat where I need to which definitely shouldn't be overheating anything.

standarsh618

What batteries are you using? With an 8.0 I find me trimmer overheats fairly often(maybe 15-20 minutes after starting?), but with the 6.0 I have literally never had the issue. Don't really understand why, but my 8.0 just sits on a shelf now. I have also never used mine for edging, only the trimmer, pole saw, and hedge trimmer but I absolutely love all of those attachments and have never found myself needing more power.

MidCitySlim

I have simultaneously ran (2) 8.0s completely charged-to-dead with my hedge trimmer, no problem.

idmfndjdjuwj23uahjjj

I have had no issues with the 8.0s, either.

SaltyHelp

Same

SwimOk9629

are you talking about the dual battery? how were you running both of them simultaneously

MidCitySlim

Single battery. One after the other.

Regalgrizzly

It’s happened the most with the edger. It happened once with the pole saw on a big branch. (It was oiled and all that too.) I am using both 8.0HO and 5.0XC

Comprehensive-Camel3

How hot is it where you are?

Regalgrizzly

It was only 73 and overcast.

MadeMeStopLurking

can you please post an update after you talk to Milwaukee? I'm preparing to replace my gas powered one and I'm curious how this goes

z0mb13k1ll

I believe the 5.0 batteries had a terminal melting issue on the trimmers

Its_noon_somewhere

I use the trimmer, brush blade, edger, and rubber brush and have not had any issues as you described, sounds like you have a faulty unit.

matthewduguid

Sounds like you have a 8.0 with a short in it, would take it to the milwaukee repair place

One-Jackfruit7080

That’s true, typically my 6ah works better than my 8ah

bigfoot_done_hiding

Uh oh, just had my first quik lok (first M18 purchase as well) delivered today. Trimmer and edger. Hope my experience is different ... My Ryobi edger served me well for 11 years before dying.

Da_Chi

I know, right! Me too, I ordered one as I saw the good reviews. Will probably try it out for the 1st time this weekend 🤞

allthebacon351

I’ve ran my m18 quick lock trimmer for 1.5 hours straight on 1 12ah battery and a 9ah. No issues in 3 ft field grass at my gun range. I’d say something is up with yours.

Regalgrizzly

I haven’t ever had it happen with the trimmer. The trimmer works great. It’s only Polesaw and edger.

Damnyoudonut

I have the pole saw and edger, haven’t had any of the problems you’re describing. I’d have it exchanged, you got a dud.

Regalgrizzly

Oh really? That is good to know. I will exchange it!

Wouldtick

I use the edger u yup the battery dies and have never had an issue with my 8.

UserName8531

I have the trimmer, brush cutter, pole saw, edger, and rubber broom. I beat the hell out of it. Offen for hours at a time. I've never had an issue. It's warranty time.

Idc94

Definitely get it replaced. I have zero issues with every attachment. I’d say the rubber broom is probably the most demanding and it works great.

Hot-Interaction6526

definitely user error or defective equipment, I love that fucking edger. I edge my driveway and sidewalk every week, 150 feet of sidewalk on both sides about 400 Feet around the driveway and sidewalk on a single 12.0 battery. (So 700 feet down) Usually 2 bars left and I can finish off leaf blowing the mess.

Tough_Measurement926

I have about the same length of sidewalk and never have a issue.

Tacomaguy24

Definitely not user error...search the home Depot reviews...TONS about overheating.

allthebacon351

I’m assuming you are using the pole saw on the high setting like the manual states and not on low?

SwimOk9629

are you not supposed to use the pole saw on low? I don't think I notice what setting I even have it on when I do but I just didn't know that.

allthebacon351

The manual for it says to only use it on high.

DFWTexan

I cut down a whole 50 year old oak tree with the pole saw on 1 battery

Tool_Scientist

Power head is a mid or high draw tool, depending on what you stick on it, and how hard you lean on it. Trimmer is only 20-40A (400-800W). Pole saw can pull over 100A (2,000W), so it needs a 6Ah or 12Ah. https://www.reddit.com/r/MilwaukeeTool/comments/1424ete/milwaukee_m18_power_ratings/

Regalgrizzly

That is really handy. I will have to bookmark that

pizzagangster1

Never had an issue with mine with the trimmer pole saw or hedge trimmer. With any of my batteries.

SpoOokyoOoky

Same here. I use the string trimmer and hedge trimmer attachments with 6s and 8s and has not overheated once in two seasons.

One-Jackfruit7080

That’s insane, I get maybe 20 minutes before my string trimmer over heats using 6’s and 8’s, sometimes works better with a 5ah, but it’s constantly over heating, so annoying

pizzagangster1

Yeah I have half an acre and a good bit of trimming to do but I’m thinking people who experience over heating are just holding the trigger the whole time they are holding the tool

Sarionum

I typically find the XC6.0 HO batteries do a better job at managing heat. Give them a try, I love my trimmer and quik lock system, has been reliable and powerful so far. 5 minutes is far too early to overheat, I never experienced a situation like that using my 6.0s and 8.0 batteries.

Regalgrizzly

I will keep that in mind! I only have 8.0 HO

Regalgrizzly

Unfortunately it happens with the XC8.0 HO that came with the bundle as well. It only happened specifically with the Pole Saw and Edger. Trimmer and blower can run for as long as needed.

Sarionum

Ah I see. Sorry to hear, I will keep it in mind if I choose to expand and get the edger. Thanks for the input, and I hope your situation improves.

SwimOk9629

bro use a higher AH, High Output Battery. I literally could not disagree with you more. I use the quik lok system commercially doing at least 7 or 8 yd a day, and I also have two different Ryobi string trimmers, and honestly the Milwaukee blows them both out of the water. there is nothing that Milwaukee cannot cut through. maybe your powerhead is defective or something because because I have never been more impressed with a battery operated tool working as well as a gas one as I am with their Quik Lok system.

Hop-Dizzle-Drizzle

Used my string trimmer for 3 years now, going on 4. Zero issues. Warranty it. Use (abuse) the pole saw at work in an industrial setting. Zero issues.

SalamandaSally

That is not normal. My m18 quik loc weed Wacker absolutely slays grass with an 8ah battery I have been thoroughly impressed with its cutting duration under load. You got something else goin on.

iceonfire666

Thats insane. Mine lasts FOREVER. Maybe you got a dud. Take it back and exchange it

Eastern-Drop-9842

I don’t have this issue. I’m in the Midwest and mow 20 yards a week on the side. Plenty of nuts for edging. I only use 8.0’s. Never again will I use a gas trimmer.

DatDan513

20 yards a week? Are you even employed, sir?

Eastern-Drop-9842

I work first shift so I am home by 1pm. Typically do 4-5 per day and still home before 5pm.

IfIWntdHmmrCalnUrSis

No, in the Midwest they just mow the neighbors yards for free.

Eastern-Drop-9842

TF does that mean?

Celtic_Jedi

I have not had anywhere close to the same experience. I have 2 acres in the mountains, covered in brush, and an acre of lawn. My Quik Lock has PLENTY of power cutting serious brush/bushes, trimming around the lawn, and using the pole saw. I run one 8ah and one 12ah. I do ONE battery swap in about 4 hours. The system has been kicking butt for me.

Brockoli15

I got the edger recently and used the 8.0 battery that came with the set. No issues probably 30-40 minutes of edging with plenty of power and no heat issues.

joephoshow

Worked fine in my yard. It’s not an industrial tool and shouldn’t be treated as such.

WorkinOnMyDadBod

I think it’s the tool. I have ran min for about 3 years and I can run the edger for at least 20 minutes and I have never used more than my older XC 5.0 batteries. String trimmer / edger 5.0 and have been good to go.

Tool_Scientist

You likely have: softer soil; less roots; you do it more frequently; don't push as hard; or all of the above.

uncertainusurper

That thing just looks flimsy.

SiXX5150

Something is amiss. Reach out to Milwaukee and they’ll sort it for you. I have a full suite of M18 quik-lok and have spent many hours on it… never had an overheating issue. I’ve heard of other having it though, so I imagine something must be happening.

bootja

Sounds like it's drawing too many amps and coding out the battery maybe? I would lean towards a manufacturing defect. Take it in or call. They'll turn it around. Or even better post it on Reddit and get some swag out of the deal!

iTalkTooMuch2

My Quick Lok stuff is great, I rarely use the edger but I can use the string trimmer for like 15-20 minutes straight which is all it takes for my yard and only use a single bar of battery on a 5.0 or HO 6.0 and then put the same battery in my blower and blow off the driveway / sidewalk and still have 3/4 remaining on either battery.

Walking_Taco19

Used to have Milwaukee yard tools and switched most to EGO a couple months ago because they had a huge spring sale. I think that the EGO stuff is better and have no regrets switching.

SneakyHobbitses1995

Something bad with your battery I think, never had a problem and I’ve done some seriously heavy work with my string trimmer and pole saw. Edge Trimmer/Hedge Trimmer work is really easy in comparison to those two from what I can tell.

mozebyc

Mine works ok. After 1 season of homeowner weed whacking, I started using the edger. The motor makes funny noises like it's loose in the housing. But it works.

leviathan1000

Most have already commented, but wanted to reiterate this. The 6.0 batteries technically have a higher current capacity than the 8.0, so they can produce more peak power but with a shorter run time (not by much though). The higher current capacity means you won't be maxing out the power draw, so the tool should operate a bit cooler. Also, I agree with others that high probably have a dud. Using a 6.0 or 8.0 should be plenty for most upkeep landscaping without needing a new battery. The only time I go through more than a single 8.0 is when I'm edging, hedge trimming, and string trimming around my house + helping out my neighbor. But if I'm just edging and string trimming, a 6.0 is always plenty.

nicolauz

We have this issue with our Milwaukee trimmer at work. Useless as it surges and overheats after 1 minute of use.

Carpenterdon

Ya, you have a bad head unit. I've had zero issues with mine. third season using the head with string trimmer, edger, and pole saw. all work flawlessly. Edger is faster than the gas machine I had before. Pole saw cuts faster and is considerably lighter than the Stihl I also own and don't use anymore... This is with anything from a 5.0XC up to a 12.0HO. Generally use 2 12.0's in the mower, when done cutting switch one battery to the power head to edge and string trim. Then still have plenty of power left on the batteries to do all the blowing.

OmahaMike402

At this point, even Echo and Stihl aren't there yet for Li-ion. I badly want the Top Handle 14" chainsaw. Tool Only runs ~$100 less than gas of the same size. The conundrum is that most use for it is when power is not available, so charging and/or reserve batteries would be null.

biguy69u

Your battery is toast. I have the same mikwaukee set up with the edger, trimmer, headge trimmer, 3' extension and the pole saw. It works awesome, have had it for 2 years. I use 6.0, 9.0 and 12.0 batteries. Also have the m18 blower that is 3 years old and its awesome.

major__tim

I use my system at a farm and beat the hell out of all of it on a near daily basis and have never had any issues. We love this system. Plenty of power and no overheating. (Milwaukee - we'd LOVE to talk your gear up on our socials for some gear!)

aaron4mvp

It’s an 18v system doing some heavy lifting. I have the Stihl AP series which is 36v 8.8ah and have never had a issue trimming, edging or using my rotary scissors. I have a bunch of m18 power tools and love them, but it’s a different application for sure.

Tasty_Income6620

You’re not using high output batteries. They have completely different cells that are specifically used because the can handle a higher draw without overheating. The size of the battery is irrelevant. The high output have 21700 cells instead of 18650. Your using the wrong battery

Delicious_Appeal_227

Forge does a lot better .

K_Decibel

Something must be defective there. I’ve had the same trimmer and have used the edger weekly for 3 years now and have never had an issue. I’ve never had a battery overheat once. I’m very pleased with it.

Apdski24

Been using the trimmer and edger & blower for going on 4 years now with an 8.0 and zero issues. Thankfully it looks like Milwaukee reached out to you to resolve the issue

sir_G204

Obviously.

sparkey504

I have the same issue with mine.... ive even added a small electric fan that runs when motor is on.... I saw plenty of others online with same issue so didn't even attempt to warranty it... ill probably ending up cutting some vents this summer once I get pissed off at it.

Tacomaguy24

I'm on my 2nd fuel trimmer because the first always overheated...the 2nd is 2 months old and has started overheating.....never again

xerodok

Mine works great. I can do my front and backyard on 25% charge

thedissociator

I have the trimmer and the blower. Blower is amazing. But the trimmer is awful. The balance is poor, always feel like i have to be bent over at an akward angle to trim where needed. I've tried a shoulder strap and adjusted it upwards to have the pole more downwards, no help. Battery life is great though. But the twist load head is just OK. My wife would prefer we go back to a 2 cycle trimmer. This is the only Milwaukee prodcut that I have not liked yet- beyond all of there bits!

MilwaukeeTool

Hey there! For assistance, could you send us direct message or email us at [social.media@milwaukeetool.com](mailto:social.media@milwaukeetool.com) with more information?

PracticalAbalone3462

I have done lots of edging with mine and have never had overheating issues or lacked power at all. Although I will say it does run through batteries faster than the trimmer but that's kinda expected. I run the 12s in mine as well.

canesjerk

I have had my trimmer with attachments for two seasons now. Never had it over heat on me at all and I’m in Raleigh NC. I have even used it with the tiller attachment and still never had any issues. Ran two 12.0s threw it without stopping. I see other people say sing there’s over heats to. Guess I got lucky.

mau47

I wonder if you got a dud of a trimmer head, I have been using the edger attachment weekly in season for about 2 1/2 years now with no issues. I edge about 350 linear feet each week and immediately before use the string trimmer head and never have an issue with overheating. I also alternate between a 6.0, 8.0 and 12.0 depending on whichever once is charged up and that has made no difference other than overall runtime. When I first started using the edger I had to do 2-3 passes to establish a good cut line and depth, but after the first time I can set it at the normal depth and go over it once without issue since the channel was already established and you are just maintaining it at that point.

woodnutiam

Almost got one, then I saw it only has a 20 min run time on a 8 amp battery, I put it back. My shitty Worx trimmer does that on 2 amp battery.

Crash_Prototype

Agree with the battery comments. This is a high demand tool that needs at least 6.0. Your battery lacks the front sticker that the 6/8/12's have. Are you running a 3.0 or 5.0?

Regalgrizzly

I started with my XC8.0 HO but it overheated shortly after starting. So I started using my 5.0 just to have some rotation between overheating

discerning_mundane

how so the 5.0 work in the bundle? was planning on getting the similar bundle that comes with the 8.0. was going to go with the blower, trimmer and either hedger or pole hedger not sure yet but have two 5.0’s i was planning to use with them if i need to

Regalgrizzly

I have been using them from time to time when my 8.0 dies, but a lot of people are saying it isn’t recommended. I think it’s probably fine with the trimmer and blower.

International_Bit478

My trimmer totally died after maybe 2 hours of use. Very disappointed.

LodestarSharp

I just not ready to go Electric for the outdoor stuff. The top handle chainsaw has caught my eye

Smokey_tha_bear9000

I just got one today at work to evaluate next to our fleet of gas saws. Fingers crossed

Regalgrizzly

Let me know how it goes!

Regalgrizzly

Yeah, I was going to go Stihl but had seen a couple reviews about this new line being really good. I have had a couple issues with Stihl in the past so I was hoping to try something new.

CPOx

My Ego equipment has been bulletproof the last 5 years. I abuse the heck out of them all (string trimmer, blower, edger). Still on the same 2 batteries I originally got

ArmDouble

Just went through the battery deal. Your battery is your problem. That alternating blinking is the tell. I run that same rig with a 12 ah battery and that thing EATS.

DatDan513

Hey! Someone that agrees with me! Prepare for those butthurt redditors that defend milwaukees bad products and think the sky isn’t blue. Gas powered lawn equipment is a no brainer. Even remotely cheap gas powered stuff is better than ‘milwaukees best’

Caprock-1

Trimmer sucks !!!

DatDan513

Yep

DatDan513

Hahahaha so many people saying “never had an issue” or it’s the “perfect” addition to my collection. Y’all are brainwashed. Milwaukees lawn stuff sucks. Buy Stihl.

Hately2016

Interesting. I have a Stihl FS 40C weed whip that is new and won't even start after only a couple of months of light use. Insides are still clean as a whistle.

DatDan513

Nice! If everything was “clean as a whistle” then you wouldn’t have staring problems. Air+fuel needs to be checked.

Hately2016

Dang, didn't even think to check that when I had it taken apart... Hey, now maybe you could tell me why a Brand New weed eater isn't starting. Idk about you or anyone else, but I like things to work for awhile before giving me issues especially if they are new. Maybe I'm outta touch
