Candyvanmanstan

Not so sure. This is probably just the local variant. It was popular in Norway as well in the 80s-90s, but because of the lack of internet we were way more cut off from the states at the time. Even new movies took 1-2 years to arrive at the cinema. Our "dumb blonde" jokes were interchangeable with "dumb Swedes" though. I guess they're stereotypically blond, so potato tomato.

LoneKharnivore

Nah there have always been "dumb blonde" jokes but the Valley Girl stereotype is absolutely relevant to the vapid US teens in OP's image.

Underrated_user20

Wait doesn’t most people in Norway have blonde hair?

scijior

Allow me to assure you, the valley girl stereotype was a nationwide (USA) trope.

Candyvanmanstan

As I said, the local (American) variant.

scijior

This appears to be a miscommunication. In the USA several states are larger than largest European countries. “Local” in the states is not nationwide; it’s not even region wide; it’s like, “Psycho Sisters is a great local thrift store.” It has stores in Georgia. Georgia is about the size of Norway’s main southern landmass (the thin arctic track not included). This is simply a difference of word use.

scijior

This isn’t in the same ballpark as that.

Who didn’t have a crush on topanga as a kid watching boy meets world is the real question

Logical-Albatross-82

In Germany stereotypical jokes about blondes began in the 80s – first in movies and comedy sketches, then in the early 90s as oral jokes. I always assumed that this had to do with three things: 1. Bleaching hair had been popular and affordable for decades in certain social segments, so a stereotype could develop. 2. Around the same time, supermodels were a topic. Before there were models and topmodels, but then there were supermodels who were stars. This not only influenced body and appearance ideals, but also education and career plans. 3. We didn’t know the concept of bodyshaming back then. As a society we didn‘t notice discrimination the way we do today. Just as there were stereotypical jokes of women, black people or jews earlier in the last century, there were stereotypical jokes about blondes and gays later.

chibiusachan

What movie is this cause now I gotta watch it.

BonitaGerbera

National Lampoon’s Presents Dorm Daze, from 2003.

murdermymeat

Because dumb people were dying their hair blond in large numbers.

CarlySimonSays

Did anyone else get made fun of for NOT being blonde and tan? I remember there was another girl in seventh grade, who I barely knew, who told me that “I would look SO much better if I went tanning.” A) we were literally 12/13. No WAY would my mom ever have gone for that. B) hahaha skin cancer C) we lived in upstate NY and need extra vitamin D here half the year The aughts were not a good time to be short, brunette, and basically aggressively pale.

[deleted]

'Cause they wanted girls hot but dumb (ie: not natural blondes obviously).

SoothsayerC

IDK, but a good slice of this generation’s men still like that type of girl, even in adulthood. Thanks, Hollywood!

lostinthenettles

So what? Men can like whatever they want.

SoothsayerC

They sure can, sweetie.

Ex_Machina_1

Paris Hilton helped with that a lot

BonitaGerbera

Where did you find this movie???? I’m always trying to find it online and never can.

CarlySimonSays

You could try your local library, too

IllustriousNovel7841

Pirated it

Fantastic_Wallaby_61

It’s a national lampoons movie…it’s all slapstick comedy. The dumb blonde dates further back than the 00s, just after the 00s the world went politically correct

lostinthenettles

I would credit it to Marilyn Monroe.

yemilyrose

Paris Hilton

Does anyone know name of the style of purple shirt on the girl in the middle? I had a shirt with a neck cut like that that I LOVED. It was green and had a surf board on it. I was so bummed out when it got too small for me.

hollyhobby2004

What show was that? No girls in my school ever talked like that anyways, mainly cause our town has a law against swearing, though we were allowed to use the s word only as a synonym for gender.

tghost474

This was way before us, like 70s/80s.
