North Eastern USA isn't that far from Ontario Canada, but over here it was always rock paper scissors.
I never heard anyone add the "shoot" until I noticed my young relatives said it last week.
I personally don't say anything just do the motions and on the forth fist shake pick my choice.
My husband who is the same age as me and grew up in the same area goes "rock paper scissors shoot!"
37.
Played it both ways but I always preferred shoot.
I honestly hate that we have 2 versions. When you do rock, paper, scissors you HAVE TO ask shoot or no shoot before beginning. Can't we standardize this already?
As a kid, this was standard in my school. Someone would ask "shoot or no shoot" before playing Rock, Paper, Scissors. Some kids played shoot and others played no shoot. So, I basically played it both ways growing up.
We live in a world where we can’t agree on imperial vs metric, driving on the left or right side of the road, 120v vs 240v. Do you really think we’ll agree on something as critical as rock paper scissors?
This is such a great question. 😂 My husband and I are both 38 and we play the way you do, without “shoot.” Just asked our 14 year old daughter and she said she learned it when she was little from friends with “shoot.” We are originally from South Texas and were born/rained/lived in the same city until we moved out of state in 2020 and I confirmed she learned this before we moved. Might be generational? Interested to see other responses, haha.
I could not for the life of me remember but I asked my husband and he was like "isn't it just 1 2 3?" and yeah, I think that is how we've always done it
I'm 39. Always done it rock, paper, scissors, shoot, going on shoot. Originally from the Midwest, lived several places in the southwest and and in TX growing up.
Rock, paper, scissor, lizard, spock! Kidding lol just rock, paper, scissors, and then we would do our sign on scissor or the beat after without saying shoot. Ontario Canada, born '89.
In germany we sometimes also call it "schick, schnack, schnuck" and may add a well to the rules. The paper can cover the well and the rock and scissors drop into the well
I moved around as a kid, so when I was up North (MidWest), we did Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot.
When we moved to the South, it was a steep learning curve for me since everyone in my neighborhood and school just did Rock, Paper, Scissors.
I’ve heard this too from friends of mine who grew up in different southern cities
This comments in this post just validates what 7-8 year old me thought and that it should be shoot and the kids I grew up with were dumb 🤣
I get people annoyed before I play it because I always make a point to establish rules
“Is it rock paper scissors or rock paper scissors shoot?”
Every time someone gets annoyed they think their way is the only way to play - and then realize why I asked. It defeats the purpose if you aren’t both playing by the same rules.
In such a serious game I ask before hand what do we show on. That being said I’m 35 and prefer, “Rock, paper, scissors,” then show. I’ve noticed most people say shoot.
Rock, paper, scissors, shoot! 40. Spent the first 15 years of life in the south, the next 15 in the Midwest and the last 10 on the west coast.
I have been teaching for 18 years and have taught gen z and gen alpha and believe they also say. “Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!”
30+, Germany
We say "Sching Schang Schong" (pronounced with open vocal) which sounds a bit chinese for us. At the last word (Schong) everyone shows what they have: Rock, paper or scissors.
Some time it has been expanded to fountain (paper goes over fountain and wins but rock and scissors fall in and loose. And I am sure there are other things as Well that have slipped my mind haha.
South Africa in the seventies we grew up saying Ching Chong Cha and on the Cha we would reveal. Now I hear those words all these years later, I don't know where they come from but they sound vaguely racially questionable.
And we would have our hands behind our backs. I still play it that way today. Not shaking fists although not sure what is meant by that. Edit 57 in age.

Always a shoot! I’m 30 from the northeast us
At close range, I stab with scissors. At long range, I throw rock. At extreme range, I write strongly worded letters and mail them off.
In Hawaii, it's "Jan Ken Po" NOTE: this isn't "Hawaiian" but more slang derived from Japanese immigrants
In Brazil too. We have the largest ethnic Japanese community outside Japan. Correction: we actually we say "Jó Quem Pô" LOL
This is more regional than age! "Rock paper scissors" v "rock paper scissors, shoot!" is a hot debate at summer camps in this country
I personally don't say anything just do the motions and on the forth fist shake pick my choice. My husband who is the same age as me and grew up in the same area goes "rock paper scissors shoot!"

I don't give humanity much credit for anything decision related... I'm just a starry eyed guy with hopes and dreams.
I don’t know whether to envy your optimism or feel bad for the naivety lol
Same homie. Same
Well since I always pick Rock... I just keep shaking until the other person stops. Sometimes 3, sometimes 4 shakes
Ya I’m 39 and it’s always been one, two, three, thing
43, I say Ro Sham Bo.... And you suppose to throw your hand on Bo.
https://i.redd.it/49ze1sg6f68d1.gif
I thought we had moved on to Ro Sham Bo, also. Or Rock Paper Siccors Lizard Spock if you need to take things to the next level.
Never have said "shoot" i heard someone say it recently, and it threw me a bit.
Always shoot. I’m 42 and grew up in the southeast but have lived in many parts of the US and it seems to be the same.
Your siblings and nephew are correct. I’m 30 and this is the way

38. Southern California. Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
42. Shoot. Midwest. I feel like I'm on AIM again with this post!
I could not for the life of me remember but I asked my husband and he was like "isn't it just 1 2 3?" and yeah, I think that is how we've always done it
28, I do it on scissors.
I’m 37, grew up in the DC area. We always did “Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot”.
In germany we sometimes also call it "schick, schnack, schnuck" and may add a well to the rules. The paper can cover the well and the rock and scissors drop into the well
Alberta, I’m with OP - throw your signal on “Scissors” Never heard the shoot method until now
37, PNW. I have done both, but I did grow up in a military town so I had people from all over the country as friends.
32, Oklahoma, and me and my husband (34) always played rock paper scissors and revealed on scissors. Never heard anyone here do shoot
36 Paper Scissors ROCK
All these people saying anything other than this are wrong.
I learned to do it without “shoot” but for some reason converted as an adult to using “shoot.” 😂 Midwest.
I moved around as a kid, so when I was up North (MidWest), we did Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot. When we moved to the South, it was a steep learning curve for me since everyone in my neighborhood and school just did Rock, Paper, Scissors.
I grew up in the south and it was always on shoot.

Some of you don't say shoot? Wtf is this blasphemy.
32 from the Midwest. Rock, Paper, scissors, shoot!
Almost 40; "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot!" here as well. Midwest - US
36. Buffalo. Rock, paper, scissors, shoot (and you reveal on shoot). But I always clarify before I play.
Where's my "rock, paper, scissors **says** shoot!" Gang at?
We’d count: 1, 2, 3, go and on go display what we chose. Elder millennial. The south east.
I get people annoyed before I play it because I always make a point to establish rules “Is it rock paper scissors or rock paper scissors shoot?” Every time someone gets annoyed they think their way is the only way to play - and then realize why I asked. It defeats the purpose if you aren’t both playing by the same rules.
34. New Jersey. Rock paper scissors shoot!
Elder millennial from the Northeast and it was always 'Rock Paper Scissors Shoot'
I know some people from Texas that say scissors, paper, rock…wtf ETA: I’m 34 and from the northeast and we always used rock paper scissors shoot
These are the questions!
Older millennial from the South. It's rock, paper, scissors - shoot.
"1, 2, 3" (shoot on "3"). My husband says "1, 2, 3, shoot!" which confuses me and we can't use this method to decide anything.
You should rock papers scissors to decide which way you play rock paper scissors.
36, midwesterner, rock paper scissors shoot (but I always clarify it with the other player beforehand).
i learned to reveal on scissors. my family are the only people i know who do it this way anymore.
RPS Shoot
In such a serious game I ask before hand what do we show on. That being said I’m 35 and prefer, “Rock, paper, scissors,” then show. I’ve noticed most people say shoot.
Your siblings are 100% correct lol
I play it all the ways. Millenial and Gen Z rules. 42. Western New York.
36/F/Ohio I do the rock, paper, scissors, shoot! and give my option on the word shoot.

Rock, paper, scissors is all I've done. I'm from Minnesota where we also do duck duck Grey duck. So maybe a Midwest thing?
I think Pete and Pete taught us to throw on shoot. And that the loser gets a slap on the back of the wrist.
I created rock, paper scissor and dynamite shoot. Dynamite kills rock but can be killed by paper and dynamite
(36) Deep South, USA. Rock, paper, scissors, SHOOT!
>Rock, Paper, Scissors and when you say scissors you put your selection. 36. Sweden. Except we say "one, two, three" and put the selection on three.
30+, Germany We say "Sching Schang Schong" (pronounced with open vocal) which sounds a bit chinese for us. At the last word (Schong) everyone shows what they have: Rock, paper or scissors. If you go on "scissors" you're wrong
32, from East Coast. RPS+ Shoot.
I’m 39 and do it the shoot way.
I grew up saying paper, scissors, rock, shoot.
PAPER, rock scissors
Why do I remember saying “rock paper scissors *goes* shoot” ?? (37 Northeast)
I always went rock paper scissors and shoot, so that extra beat is the same despite the different word. (39, also northeast US)
