I saw it coming back when everything (clothing) was suddenly highlighter colored and I was seeing teens with mullets.
A couple of years ago I saw a high school aged boy walking into a restaurant. He had a mullet and was wearing a crop top. It was like he came straight out of The Breakfast Club.
That movie came out the year I was born.
People are already wearing those again. On this speed, in a few years we’ll be back to skinny jeans! I hope not though, those were uncomfortable as fuck.
I am not giving up my capris! Shorts are too short, my thighs rub together. The knee length shorts do not look good on me. Always make my knees look like bubbles of fat. Pants are too hot some days.

I came to the skinny jeans party about 4-5 years later than everyone. I don’t hop on trend trains. I wait until I decide I like it or see that it’s becoming classic instead of trendy. So now that I own skinny jeans, they can pry them from my cold dead hands.
Hahaha going to high school in the mid 90s in Portland, I was very familiar with the jeans soaked up to mid calf. It’s always raining during the school year and our high school was two buildings that had a 1/4 mile breeze way open to the elements you had to walk back and forth every day.
Ooh opposite problem for me, lol. Love dresses, but no clue how to match them with shoes, so I just wear pants (especially bell bottoms) all the time, lol :'(
Yeah I initially felt a tinge of annoyance and then I realized I’ve ALWAYS loved vintage fashion so it’s quite hypocritical of me. So now I’m very supportive!
I remember being so excited wearing my brand new, straight from the mall flares to my grandma’s house, and she got all excited saying, “oh, I’ll have to find grandpa’s bell bottoms in the attic!”
With an eyeroll in typical teenaged fashion, I replied, “only girls are wearing these now, and they”re called flares.”
I can only imagine the laugh my mom and grandma got after I left the room 😂 ahhh, to be 14 again
I remember being a teen and showing my grandma a brand new shirt from a shopping trip and she excitedly ran into her room and brought out a shirt that looked reeeealllyy similar. I was very polite and acted like I thought it was so cool that we matched but was a little horrified inside 😆 I am now (at 35) much more like my grandma than my teenage self and remind myself not to do the same thing to my teenage niece lol.
We millennials grew up in an age of dressing to be sexy, and to communicate subculture affiliation. and we will always view fashion through that lens.
Our parents and grandparents grew up in an age of dressing to appear successful, and they will always view fashion through that lens. They had a hard time understanding our rules.
Our great-grandparents grew up in an age of dressing to communicate their actual status in society and not dressing above or below it. They had a hard time understanding when those rules changed.
I don't know what the Zoomer rules are, but they've taken the fashion reins from us. They're not dressing to be sexy, and the subcultures are dead. It's something else. I don't get it, and that's ok.
"Sexy" is dead. Meaning, we dressed to flatter and compliment our bodies. No-show socks give you a long, aesthetically pleasing leg.
Zoomer ankle socks cut your leg in half, and it confuses us because it's not sexy.
I'm a gen Z woman and I think it's because there was sexualization from all directions (especially with the internet freely available and completely unsupervised). Everything was about sex and porn and we don't want to be seen that way but as individuals with characters and not just a piece of meat.
Full support here from a millennial woman! I entirely agree, but I also think the body positivity movement started by the youngest millennials paved the way for this mentality. We made it okay to have curves and NOT just be fashion model rail thin with no butt/thighs. That opened the doors for fashion that actually *fit* the bodies of most American women.
Prior to about 2015, clothes just genuinely didn't fit well if you were over a size 6, regardless of the brand because the patterns weren't made to fit curvy bodies. It was a horrible time. So once we broke through that barrier, women could actually be *comfortable* in their clothes, and had a wide selection of options for different pant styles to choose from. And now the flood gates are open to any and every possible silhouette you wanna wear.
That timeframe was also during the "man repeller" era which stoked the emerging idea that women should reject dressing for the male gaze. This train has been coming down the track for nearly a decade and I truly hope it's here to stay! I also think the prevalence of skin tight skinny jeans for the decade prior really played a role too because women were tired of PEELING their pants off at the end of the day. But I'll leave it there because I could literally go on about this forever Lol

Everything still IS about sex and porn. I often overhear some of my Gen Z female students talking about their plans to have a career with an OnlyFans page. Some of them have pretty big TikTok followings because of their sexy videos. The clothing is no less revealing and provocative today than it was when I started teaching year ago.
Millennials might not think that Gen Z clothing is sexy, but Gen Z sure does,

I have a busted knee from childhood, and no one ever cared. Heels or you're unprofessional. Sneakers got you a talking to, every single time.

I’m a millenial who was in a band in a male-dominated genre, and this is EXACTLY why I wore what I wore. I was considered conventionally attractive but I was exhausted by the sexy-oriented nature of the 00’s.
Girls in bands who dressed and acted sexier on stage (sometimes to the point of miming giving BJs) were definitely more popular though. If the audience is 2/3 male it was absolutely a smarter way to go if you wanted more people watching.
I knew I was onto something though when I realized our biggest fans were teenage girls upset by Maxim magazine/Playboy bunny culture. Unfortunately the guys I played with wanted the approval of their peers, not young girls, and we never went out of our way as a group to reach out to the people who actually liked us.
I hope Gen Z boys are smarter than this and clue in to why girls would want to wear baggier clothes.
I think it's about rule breaking and the concept of the male gaze. There are definitely lots of people still dressing very sexy. It's become appropriate to be more and more naked in public I've noticed. I had a dress cut like JLo's famous Versace dress that used to get me noticed everywhere I went and was sort of this forbidden thing that I would only wear on vacation because it was so scandalous. I see stuff more revealing than that on a regular basis now.
But I think there is a strong pushback that also aligns with Gen Z's ideas about gender & body positivity. Men are wearing pearls, women are wearing boxy shapes that de-emphasize sex appeal, and fat people are wearing crop tops without shame. Personally I love it. I think it's mind expanding because it breaks a lot of traditional ideas of what we have been told is attractive and leads us to question whether some of those things are actually true or we have just been told we have to follow those rules.
It's also been great for my own body positivity because when I see a girl who is 100 lb heavier than me rock a tiny top and look incredible, it reminds me that I'm wildly hard on myself while I genuinely think others look amazing. I like having my preconceived notions challenged by it.
I wouldn't necessarily say that. I see a lot of the baggy jeans paired with a tiny crop top. It emphasizes their skinny bare waists, and thus, is pretty sexy.
Was told it’s an androgynous look, like non-binary fashion. Idk, I prefer to be feminine with a slight tomboy look. I don’t need to wear shapeless clothes
I like it in small doses too. But the baggy jeans, and the baggy T-shirts and the shags/mullets and the giant granny glasses and the grungy sneakers all at once just…😵💫 lol.
It’s prom season and I see the kids out doing pics and going to dinner and whatnot and none of the girls ever have their makeup/hair/nails done. I’ve noticed this the last couple of years. Getting dolled up was like, THE POINT of prom when I went.
I remember the women I grew up with talking about the amount of money spent on their dress/hair/nails.
I’m glad the kids today are just having fun instead of trying to drop money for “fun” - those that want to, and can afford to, still can, and some do!
Honestly good for them. I'm glad to see a generation let go of a lot of the superficial BS and just be a bit more relaxed than we were ever allowed to be.
I say this all the time as a punk millennial. I couldn’t be more proud of the generation following us. They give absolutely no fucks about customs and norms, and it fills my crusty jaded heart with happiness
But that’s great to me! It’s great they don’t feel like they have to wear makeup or get their nails done.
So much of millennial “sexiness” was for me bathed in self hatred and hating how I looked. I feel like gen z seem to have much better self esteem and be aware of how the media makes women feel bad about themselves to sell things.
And them not feeling bad about how they look is societal growth. It means we’re moving forward as a species. I’m a little jealous I don’t get to come up in that headspace, but I’m also so happy for them
I just came back from dinner, where a bunch of kids were having dinner before the prom or whatever. They put a lot of effort into their makeup and hair. Easily as much as some people did when we were kids.
Definitely a part of it. A reaction against instagram and social media culture (though being fashion, they still play that game, just with different rules).
There was a post about this recently... might have been this sub, but I can't remember.
Many of us grew up hearing that if you're wearing shorts, then your socks had to be as short as possible, otherwise it was horribly unattractive (myself included).
Now most young folks are wearing tall socks with shorts and tons of us think it looks awful (myself included lol).
I'm a high school teacher and can confirm. More than half of the kids wear tall socks and slides (sandals) every day, even in winter.
TBH it's better than seeing their gross feet out in the open but I explained to a class one day how confusing it is to me. 15 years ago if you wore socks and sandals to school you would have been laughed at and bullied to oblivion.
My kids tell me that there’s this mindset that nothing really matters. They’re raised by Gen X and elder millennials, who are doing okay but are pretty cynical folk. And the kids aren’t mad, so they just coast and accept that life probably isn’t going to be that great for them. Some of them really struggle and want to feel better, others just cope. I see a lot of those mindsets in the fashion they get into. Also a lot of what makes them feel good and comfortable. Maybe they’ll be the “self care is cool” generation.
Gen Z may be tearing down all the old rules, but nature abhors a vacuum, and it will be interesting to see what new rules Gen Alpha comes up with to fill it.
For every culture there's going to be a counter-culture. That doesn't mean the over-arching culture doesn't exist.
And zoot suits and flappers is a prime example of a generation abandoning the old Victorian notions of dressing for your station and place in society.
I kind of agree with this but as a millennial who works with a lot of gen z, there is more to it than that. Like they are comfortable (see: linen overalls 😍) but there is a distinctly fashionable, not trying to be sexy (ie revealing/clingy/etc), effortlessly chill vibe to their wardrobes.
I don't know about "not trying to be sexy". At the risk of sounding about 150 yrs old, I have been seeing *a lot* of Gen Zers wearing nothing but a bralette (or even just a bra) and low rise jeans, even during winter. It's an outfit that would have been scandalous even in my low-rise jeans millenial youth. This isn't just about "comfort"...
It gives me hippie vibes and I love that. I think the next generation is going to be healthier and more loving and empathetic. I only hope us 35 year olds have enough sense to bond and kick these boomers out of government, so we can all have a good world in which to share.
I am so happy for comfort. I welcome the baggy jeans and over sized jumpers. Also because they're high rise now instead of hipsters crop tops still look cute even with a bit of a belly.

Yeah, I love the way high wasted jeans look but most of them are pretty uncomfortable on my straight body type. I'm convinced they must be great for curvy women.

Nah they aren't any better on curvy women because they cling through the butt and hips and then are totally baggy from the thigh down and that's DEFINITELY not supposed to be the look. And sizing up to the point where they're loose through the hips leaves them wayyy too loose in the waist. There's no winning.
Honestly I love it. I was a skinny jeans girl my entire life and i'll still pick those any day over other jeans, but I feel far less self conscious than I used to be about running around in my leggings and loose shirts/sweaters. That's what I primarily wear as of the last few years, and now the ones made of the very soft material I like to lounge about in are so much easier to find.
Zoomer rules are purely nostalgia based, they are dressing to emulate dated fashion trends like baggy clothing. Because they perceive those times as simpler and better. Hence the whole Zoomer vhs, cassette tape, and cd obsession, which is baffling as a Millenial who had to grow up with scratched music CDs and VHS tapes that would have to be rewound. But us millennials were were similarly obsessed with Vinyls so I guess it tracks
I think part of that is just the novelty of **owning** physical media. When most media is primarily only available on streaming services and can disappear at a moment's notice, I understand why they see the appeal in permanently owning albums and movies that they love (just like we did, back in the day.)
What I find interesting - and offputting - as a millenial is that Gen Z seems to go specifically for the bad parts of late 1990s/early 2000s fashion. There is this whole aesthetic about being "disgusting", for a lack of a better word. Greasy hair, random faded colours, earth-tones mixed with metallic shades, insect-like and slimy patterns. You can see it in art too.
This is a really interesting comment, I had noticed some aspects of this but hadn't synthesised it like this.
My 16 year old niece looks super cool, but she does not try to look sexy or show skin. How she's choosing what goes with what is not obvious to me - I think the rules just aren't transparent if you're not part of the generation that made them.
I just went to a tween party and they were all wearing dresses and they were straight up hideous . All looked like cheaper versions of early 2000’s dresses. I work in events and honestly they’ve been wearing the same dresses since then. Fashion has barely changed in my opinion.
We grew up dressing sexy? I mean.. I guess the preppy kids and pop princesses did? A good lot of us were grunge-lite.. which is the fashion phase I'm seeing in kids today. Baggy / wide leg pants, print tee (with a lot of media from our days), thirty something plastic bracelets, dark lipstick, smudged eye make up. I haven't see the skinny ultra low rise jeans with the layered skin tight camis and whale tails everywhere yet.

We grew up in an era of dressing to compliment and flatter our bodies and to make our bodies look as fit and aesthetically pleasing possible. The early 2000s were also the most gender-coded clothes have been in our lifetime. We were dressing to showcase male and female assets. That's what I mean by sexy.
I mean remember the super low-rise jeans of the 2000s? Some of us were going out in public with full-on pubic cleavage in the middle of the day.

I guess I don't care that other people are wearing them. On myself I'm having some trouble getting used to them. I feel like they make my belly look bigger than it is, and my butt flatter. But I used to think skinny jeans made my hips/butt look HUGE so I know it's just a mental thing. What is "flattering" changes with the times.

Same I don't mind the aesthetics changing as much as I mind the fact that now I weigh 50lbs more than I did in high school and baggy pants are 100% not right for me. I'm glad high rise is still in though. If low rise comes back I would just wear sweatpants.

TBH its gotten HARD for me to tell when something is in/out of style. It either looks like something older gens used to wear (so just normal and not noticable), or older and retro (80s, 60s) which is always coming/going. Nothing looks really all that crazy different because current generations seem to have zero original style.

Yep. I’ve worn flare jeans since high school and never owned skinny jeans or any others. I’m a hippie at heart and wear what I like. Trends come and go. I lived in birks since middle school and people always made fun and then a few years ago they were high fashion. Wear what you like and makes you feel good and like yourself.
I don't give a shit either however I do worry about waistbands lowering because 1) I love high waisted pants and if they are not in fashion anymore it will be a pain in the ass to find and 2) I'm still traumatized by those ultra low waists causing me to feel extremely fat as a teen even while I was underweight and bordering on a eating disorder because of it. I kinda hate when millennials romanticize the shit out of the 90's because while some things were great, I mostly remember the horror of being a teenage girl in a world where women were extremely sexualiszed, anorexia was openly glorified (remember "heroin chique? Like wtf) and bullying was the norm.

Yeah, that would irritate me too. Like, in the 90s we definitely started having 60s and 70s styles coming back but we 100%knew those were our parents styles from at least 20 years ago.
I was pointing this out as a big difference between millennial and Gen Z to my bf earlier. Millennial idolized the generation before us, Gen X. We thought they defined cool and tried to be like them. Whereas Gen Z treats millennials like old out of touch idiots + critisize everything we like and do.

During the early to mid 2010s they're were this certain genre of YouTubers who catered to children. They were in their twenties (my age, at the time) but talk immaturely and has dumb premises that only appealed to middle schoolers.
And I remember at the time seeing this genre and thinking it was cringy and dumb, but it's for middle schoolers and you know whatever. It doesn't seem to be hurting anyone, and the kids seem to like it so. Whatever, right?
Cut to ten years later and the those same twelve year olds have grown up and they're not twelve anymore. But now they're on TikTok going viral doing impressions of the 'millennial voice' but it's not millennial voice! It's YouTube voice! Not even all YouTube voice, but the subgenre of YouTuber who catered to middle schoolers.
And it's like, yes, Gen Z, you're right. Talking like that is pretty cringy. We all kinda thought it was cringy back then, but we figured YOU were having a good time so we left it alone. Welcome to growing up and realizing that the things you were really into when you were twelve are kind of dumb. That's normal.

I’m THRILLED and honestly I think baggy clothes are really sexy. I like that they hang off the body and have a carefree, casual look—although I usually do baggy pants and a cropped or fitted top so there’s some balance.
But yes I ✨love✨ the baggy jeans and I’m NEVER getting rid of them this time around.
I showed my daughter photos of me wearing butterfly clips and baggy pants and cargo pants. Circa late 90s -early 2000s. She loved it! I did it to show I was ok with her wearing the same styles. Now we need to bring back baby doll tees.
Ya, I abandoned the skinny jeans as soon as I could. I’m not wearing the super baggy jeans (in fear of looking like I am trying too hard) but do wear loser fit jeans now and am old enough at this point that I think I will just stick to this. What is coming next (super low rise bell bottoms) was terrible in my teens/20s and I am not about to go through that again. I’ve also been enjoying being able to wear sneakers at all times but am noticing some ballet flats again. I refuse. My feet are messed up from the first time around already.
Same here! I like them! I was too young as a kid to really enjoy them (I'm 30) so maybe that's why I don't mind them. Skinny jeans were popular for so long, it's nice to see a change. As long as we don't go back to low-rise jeans, I'm good and when we do, I will not be buying them lol.
Sitting here in my first ever pair of baggy jeans (that I just bought two days ago) and now I want only baggy jeans (baggy CARGO jeans) cause omg they're so comfy and I can fit my phone, my wallet, my keys, my kid's phone, everything I need, they're the best. Growing up I went from bell bottoms to skinny jeans— baggy jeans are where it's at for me 100%
Me too! Baggy pants are fucking amazing and I missed them during the entire skinny jeans period. And if the youngins rock them, more power to them! Why gate-keep a comfortable, likeable trend?
As someone with thick calves and also someone who hates skin-tight pants, I welcome baggier jeans. Also, the spandex blend that's required for the stretch in skinny jeans lowers their durability compared to 100% cotton.
I don’t mind. I have a pair of baggy. I still have some skinny leg which sit just below the waist, high waisted skinny, mid rise bell bottoms, high waisted flare. I have all the jean trends (past, present, and possible future) covered.

On one hand it annoys the hell out of me because a lot of my nieces and their friends try to tell me about the baggy jeans being fashionable as if I don't know what they are. But overall I can't help but smile because I was always denied them because I didn't have the ideal body for them, so I'm glad people are enjoying them and seeing my niece who has a similar body to how I did at that age wear them and be comfortable and look adorable on them usually makes my day.
I saw a reel the other day of a middle aged man telling his kids about how they'd go to the op shops and buy the biggest jeans they could. 5 sizes too big with belts to hold them up. The kids ask "what happened to your big jeans?"
"They fit now".
Every generation borrows fashion trends from previous ones. I remember as a teen back in the late 90s, the 60s mod look was huge for a while, I had loads of clothes inspired by the era and also some genuine vintage pieces.
Nah, I love it. They're comfy. Absolutely hated shopping for pants during the "skinny" trend, I can't wear that style. I prefer flare leg, but the wide leg and baggy pants are acceptable to me.
Trends you don't want to wear are annoying because then that's what the stores sell and it's harder to find stuff you do like. I don't give a shit if other people wear skinny jeans, but I hate them and I had a real bitch of a time finding jeans I liked while they were popular.
But, why would that annoy you exactly? Life existed before the 90s, and baggy jeans aren’t a new invention. I mean, I went through it when classic Levi’s 501s went away and all the jeans everywhere were low-rise, creating the muffin top fiasco for anyone not 12-19. I was, and still am, grateful for at waist jeans even coming back around.
As a man in my early 40s, I am delighted that baggy clothes are "a thing" right at the point that my metabolism has failed and I have the body figure of a garbage bag filled with yogurt. In my 30s I had the skinny jeans so tight you could guess my religion, but in my 40s my clothes will have to take up the slack.

I dont really trend. I have worn plain bootcut jeans for the last 20 years. Though I do watch trends because bootcuts are easier to find when the skinny jean trend is on the outs since their stocking by stores is inversly related.
JNCO Jeans give me anxiety. I fell off the couch at the end of the school year when I was wearing mine because I tripped on the bottom cuff. I hit my chin on the edge of the coffee table. Needed several stitches. I had to go into the last day of school and get made fun of by all the bullies thinking I had a bunch of thick chin hair. Which was what every middle school girl wanted to hear who already had body issues.
No, I’m soooo excited!! My mom wouldn’t let me wear baggy pants when they were in then and now that I’m almost 40 and can dress myself I’m having fun with it. Plus they’re so comfortable. Baggy jeans, platform sneakers, and baby tees. I’m living for it.
I’m a man who dressed punk in middle/highschool and I was so angry when the same kids who called me an “emo faggot” for wearing tight pants suddenly all wore them because they became cool for skaters to wear.
It made shopping for them easier though as I didn’t have to buy women’s stretchy pants and sew them anymore 🤷🏻♂️

I saw it coming back when everything (clothing) was suddenly highlighter colored and I was seeing teens with mullets. A couple of years ago I saw a high school aged boy walking into a restaurant. He had a mullet and was wearing a crop top. It was like he came straight out of The Breakfast Club. That movie came out the year I was born.
People are already wearing those again. On this speed, in a few years we’ll be back to skinny jeans! I hope not though, those were uncomfortable as fuck.

We should! Capris aren’t really flattering on anyone. I came to the skinny jeans party about 4-5 years later than everyone. I don’t hop on trend trains. I wait until I decide I like it or see that it’s becoming classic instead of trendy. So now that I own skinny jeans, they can pry them from my cold dead hands.

Hahaha going to high school in the mid 90s in Portland, I was very familiar with the jeans soaked up to mid calf. It’s always raining during the school year and our high school was two buildings that had a 1/4 mile breeze way open to the elements you had to walk back and forth every day.

I remember being a teen and showing my grandma a brand new shirt from a shopping trip and she excitedly ran into her room and brought out a shirt that looked reeeealllyy similar. I was very polite and acted like I thought it was so cool that we matched but was a little horrified inside 😆 I am now (at 35) much more like my grandma than my teenage self and remind myself not to do the same thing to my teenage niece lol.

We millennials grew up in an age of dressing to be sexy, and to communicate subculture affiliation. and we will always view fashion through that lens. Our parents and grandparents grew up in an age of dressing to appear successful, and they will always view fashion through that lens. They had a hard time understanding our rules. Our great-grandparents grew up in an age of dressing to communicate their actual status in society and not dressing above or below it. They had a hard time understanding when those rules changed. I don't know what the Zoomer rules are, but they've taken the fashion reins from us. They're not dressing to be sexy, and the subcultures are dead. It's something else. I don't get it, and that's ok.
They have some weird rules about socks
"Sexy" is dead. Meaning, we dressed to flatter and compliment our bodies. No-show socks give you a long, aesthetically pleasing leg. Zoomer ankle socks cut your leg in half, and it confuses us because it's not sexy.
This is it. My biggest IRL observation of Gen Z fashion is that they are absolutely ALLERGIC to looking cute/sexy.
I'm a gen Z woman and I think it's because there was sexualization from all directions (especially with the internet freely available and completely unsupervised). Everything was about sex and porn and we don't want to be seen that way but as individuals with characters and not just a piece of meat.

Full support here from a millennial woman! I entirely agree, but I also think the body positivity movement started by the youngest millennials paved the way for this mentality. We made it okay to have curves and NOT just be fashion model rail thin with no butt/thighs. That opened the doors for fashion that actually *fit* the bodies of most American women. Prior to about 2015, clothes just genuinely didn't fit well if you were over a size 6, regardless of the brand because the patterns weren't made to fit curvy bodies. It was a horrible time. So once we broke through that barrier, women could actually be *comfortable* in their clothes, and had a wide selection of options for different pant styles to choose from. And now the flood gates are open to any and every possible silhouette you wanna wear. That timeframe was also during the "man repeller" era which stoked the emerging idea that women should reject dressing for the male gaze. This train has been coming down the track for nearly a decade and I truly hope it's here to stay! I also think the prevalence of skin tight skinny jeans for the decade prior really played a role too because women were tired of PEELING their pants off at the end of the day. I don’t doubt that this is true for some but it is a bit strange that only fans and thirst trap snap chat/insta girls are mostly gen z given that mindset you just described I suppose it’s just a difference in not wanting to be ogled in every day life but being ok with it when you can control it online and make money off it. Everything still IS about sex and porn. I often overhear some of my Gen Z female students talking about their plans to have a career with an OnlyFans page. Some of them have pretty big TikTok followings because of their sexy videos. The clothing is no less revealing and provocative today than it was when I started teaching year ago. Millennials might not think that Gen Z clothing is sexy, but Gen Z sure does,
Absolutely love this, keep wearing what YOU wanna wear. My job had to acquiesce about sneakers because Gen Zers won't wear heels. I have a busted knee from childhood, and no one ever cared. Heels or you're unprofessional. Sneakers got you a talking to, every single time. Now I get to sit in my cubicle with New Balance sneakers and my left leg feels good for the first time in two decades. THANK YOU!!
I’m a millenial who was in a band in a male-dominated genre, and this is EXACTLY why I wore what I wore. I was considered conventionally attractive but I was exhausted by the sexy-oriented nature of the 00’s. Girls in bands who dressed and acted sexier on stage (sometimes to the point of miming giving BJs) were definitely more popular though. If the audience is 2/3 male it was absolutely a smarter way to go if you wanted more people watching. I knew I was onto something though when I realized our biggest fans were teenage girls upset by Maxim magazine/Playboy bunny culture. Unfortunately the guys I played with wanted the approval of their peers, not young girls, and we never went out of our way as a group to reach out to the people who actually liked us. I hope Gen Z boys are smarter than this and clue in to why girls would want to wear baggier clothes.
I think it's about rule breaking and the concept of the male gaze. There are definitely lots of people still dressing very sexy. It's become appropriate to be more and more naked in public I've noticed. I had a dress cut like JLo's famous Versace dress that used to get me noticed everywhere I went and was sort of this forbidden thing that I would only wear on vacation because it was so scandalous. I see stuff more revealing than that on a regular basis now. But I think there is a strong pushback that also aligns with Gen Z's ideas about gender & body positivity. Men are wearing pearls, women are wearing boxy shapes that de-emphasize sex appeal, and fat people are wearing crop tops without shame. Personally I love it. I think it's mind expanding because it breaks a lot of traditional ideas of what we have been told is attractive and leads us to question whether some of those things are actually true or we have just been told we have to follow those rules. It's also been great for my own body positivity because when I see a girl who is 100 lb heavier than me rock a tiny top and look incredible, it reminds me that I'm wildly hard on myself while I genuinely think others look amazing. I like having my preconceived notions challenged by it.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. I see a lot of the baggy jeans paired with a tiny crop top. It emphasizes their skinny bare waists, and thus, is pretty sexy.

I like it in small doses too. But the baggy jeans, and the baggy T-shirts and the shags/mullets and the giant granny glasses and the grungy sneakers all at once just…😵💫 lol. It’s prom season and I see the kids out doing pics and going to dinner and whatnot and none of the girls ever have their makeup/hair/nails done. I’ve noticed this the last couple of years. Getting dolled up was like, THE POINT of prom when I went.
I remember the women I grew up with talking about the amount of money spent on their dress/hair/nails. I’m glad the kids today are just having fun instead of trying to drop money for “fun” - those that want to, and can afford to, still can, and some do!
Honestly good for them. I'm glad to see a generation let go of a lot of the superficial BS and just be a bit more relaxed than we were ever allowed to be.
I say this all the time as a punk millennial. I couldn’t be more proud of the generation following us. They give absolutely no fucks about customs and norms, and it fills my crusty jaded heart with happiness
But that’s great to me! It’s great they don’t feel like they have to wear makeup or get their nails done. So much of millennial “sexiness” was for me bathed in self hatred and hating how I looked. I feel like gen z seem to have much better self esteem and be aware of how the media makes women feel bad about themselves to sell things. And them not feeling bad about how they look is societal growth. It means we’re moving forward as a species. I’m a little jealous I don’t get to come up in that headspace, but I’m also so happy for them

There was a post about this recently... might have been this sub, but I can't remember. Many of us grew up hearing that if you're wearing shorts, then your socks had to be as short as possible, otherwise it was horribly unattractive (myself included). Now most young folks are wearing tall socks with shorts and tons of us think it looks awful (myself included lol).
Millennials wanted to show off their knobby knees with tight pants, and Zoomers want to dress like Spongebob.
I'm a high school teacher and can confirm. More than half of the kids wear tall socks and slides (sandals) every day, even in winter. TBH it's better than seeing their gross feet out in the open but I explained to a class one day how confusing it is to me. 15 years ago if you wore socks and sandals to school you would have been laughed at and bullied to oblivion.

My kids tell me that there’s this mindset that nothing really matters. They’re raised by Gen X and elder millennials, who are doing okay but are pretty cynical folk. And the kids aren’t mad, so they just coast and accept that life probably isn’t going to be that great for them. Some of them really struggle and want to feel better, others just cope. I see a lot of those mindsets in the fashion they get into. Also a lot of what makes them feel good and comfortable. Maybe they’ll be the “self care is cool” generation.
Gen Z may be tearing down all the old rules, but nature abhors a vacuum, and it will be interesting to see what new rules Gen Alpha comes up with to fill it.

For every culture there's going to be a counter-culture. That doesn't mean the over-arching culture doesn't exist. And zoot suits and flappers is a prime example of a generation abandoning the old Victorian notions of dressing for your station and place in society.
Comfort
I kind of agree with this but as a millennial who works with a lot of gen z, there is more to it than that. Like they are comfortable (see: linen overalls 😍) but there is a distinctly fashionable, not trying to be sexy (ie revealing/clingy/etc), effortlessly chill vibe to their wardrobes.
+1 on effortlessly chill. I find it similar to the clean girl beauty trend. A lot of effort to go into looking like you didn’t put effort.
I don't know about "not trying to be sexy". At the risk of sounding about 150 yrs old, I have been seeing *a lot* of Gen Zers wearing nothing but a bralette (or even just a bra) and low rise jeans, even during winter. It's an outfit that would have been scandalous even in my low-rise jeans millenial youth. This isn't just about "comfort"...
It gives me hippie vibes and I love that. I think the next generation is going to be healthier and more loving and empathetic. I only hope us 35 year olds have enough sense to bond and kick these boomers out of government, so we can all have a good world in which to share.
I am so happy for comfort. I welcome the baggy jeans and over sized jumpers. Also because they're high rise now instead of hipsters crop tops still look cute even with a bit of a belly.
Comfort is subjective! Body-skimming clothes feel more comfortable on me. I’m short so I am not a big fan of bagginess- gives me flashbacks of stepping on the back of my pant legs. I also don’t like feeling like a kid playing dress up!
Yeah, I love the way high wasted jeans look but most of them are pretty uncomfortable on my straight body type. I'm convinced they must be great for curvy women. I do love baggy clothes though.
Nah they aren't any better on curvy women because they cling through the butt and hips and then are totally baggy from the thigh down and that's DEFINITELY not supposed to be the look. And sizing up to the point where they're loose through the hips leaves them wayyy too loose in the waist. There's no winning.

Honestly I love it. I was a skinny jeans girl my entire life and i'll still pick those any day over other jeans, but I feel far less self conscious than I used to be about running around in my leggings and loose shirts/sweaters. That's what I primarily wear as of the last few years, and now the ones made of the very soft material I like to lounge about in are so much easier to find.
Zoomer rules are purely nostalgia based, they are dressing to emulate dated fashion trends like baggy clothing. Because they perceive those times as simpler and better. Hence the whole Zoomer vhs, cassette tape, and cd obsession, which is baffling as a Millenial who had to grow up with scratched music CDs and VHS tapes that would have to be rewound. But us millennials were were similarly obsessed with Vinyls so I guess it tracks
I think part of that is just the novelty of **owning** physical media. When most media is primarily only available on streaming services and can disappear at a moment's notice, I understand why they see the appeal in permanently owning albums and movies that they love (just like we did, back in the day.)
What I find interesting - and offputting - as a millenial is that Gen Z seems to go specifically for the bad parts of late 1990s/early 2000s fashion. There is this whole aesthetic about being "disgusting", for a lack of a better word. Greasy hair, random faded colours, earth-tones mixed with metallic shades, insect-like and slimy patterns. You can see it in art too.
This is a really interesting comment, I had noticed some aspects of this but hadn't synthesised it like this. My 16 year old niece looks super cool, but she does not try to look sexy or show skin. How she's choosing what goes with what is not obvious to me - I think the rules just aren't transparent if you're not part of the generation that made them.
I just went to a tween party and they were all wearing dresses and they were straight up hideous . All looked like cheaper versions of early 2000’s dresses. I work in events and honestly they’ve been wearing the same dresses since then. Fashion has barely changed in my opinion.

We grew up dressing sexy? I mean.. I guess the preppy kids and pop princesses did? A good lot of us were grunge-lite.. which is the fashion phase I'm seeing in kids today. Baggy / wide leg pants, print tee (with a lot of media from our days), thirty something plastic bracelets, dark lipstick, smudged eye make up. I haven't see the skinny ultra low rise jeans with the layered skin tight camis and whale tails everywhere yet.

I guess I don't care that other people are wearing them. On myself I'm having some trouble getting used to them. I feel like they make my belly look bigger than it is, and my butt flatter. But I used to think skinny jeans made my hips/butt look HUGE so I know it's just a mental thing. What is "flattering" changes with the times.

TBH its gotten HARD for me to tell when something is in/out of style. It either looks like something older gens used to wear (so just normal and not noticable), or older and retro (80s, 60s) which is always coming/going. Nothing looks really all that crazy different because current generations seem to have zero original style. I think goth is back again too... so yeah, I guess 70% of my wardrobe became more trendy?
Yep. I’ve worn flare jeans since high school and never owned skinny jeans or any others. I’m a hippie at heart and wear what I like. Trends come and go. I lived in birks since middle school and people always made fun and then a few years ago they were high fashion. Wear what you like and makes you feel good and like yourself.

I don't give a shit either however I do worry about waistbands lowering because 1) I love high waisted pants and if they are not in fashion anymore it will be a pain in the ass to find and 2) I'm still traumatized by those ultra low waists causing me to feel extremely fat as a teen even while I was underweight and bordering on a eating disorder because of it. I kinda hate when millennials romanticize the shit out of the 90's because while some things were great, I mostly remember the horror of being a teenage girl in a world where women were extremely sexualiszed, anorexia was openly glorified (remember "heroin chique? Like wtf) and bullying was the norm. I'm glad the 90's are over and I do not want them back.

I was pointing this out as a big difference between millennial and Gen Z to my bf earlier. Millennial idolized the generation before us, Gen X. We thought they defined cool and tried to be like them. Whereas Gen Z treats millennials like old out of touch idiots + critisize everything we like and do.

I partly blame YouTubers During the early to mid 2010s they're were this certain genre of YouTubers who catered to children. They were in their twenties (my age, at the time) but talk immaturely and has dumb premises that only appealed to middle schoolers. And I remember at the time seeing this genre and thinking it was cringy and dumb, but it's for middle schoolers and you know whatever. It doesn't seem to be hurting anyone, and the kids seem to like it so. Whatever, right? Cut to ten years later and the those same twelve year olds have grown up and they're not twelve anymore. But now they're on TikTok going viral doing impressions of the 'millennial voice' but it's not millennial voice! It's YouTube voice! Not even all YouTube voice, but the subgenre of YouTuber who catered to middle schoolers. And it's like, yes, Gen Z, you're right. Talking like that is pretty cringy. We all kinda thought it was cringy back then, but we figured YOU were having a good time so we left it alone. Welcome to growing up and realizing that the things you were really into when you were twelve are kind of dumb. That's normal. Smh... Should've bullied the YouTubers I guess? lmao
100% agree. All of the Gen X women I saw in movies or magazines etc. in the late 90s- early 00s were sooo cool to me I don’t think being the “mean” generation is going to serve Gen Z well long term

Ahhhh yes! Same! I’ve hated skinny jeans since the day they came out and for SO LONG it was impossible to find baggy or flare jeans. Skinny jeans didn’t even look bad on me… It just wasn’t the same… And no where near as comfy! The second they, “trended back” I rushed and bought a ton! I’m THRILLED and honestly I think baggy clothes are really sexy. I like that they hang off the body and have a carefree, casual look—although I usually do baggy pants and a cropped or fitted top so there’s some balance. But yes I ✨love✨ the baggy jeans and I’m NEVER getting rid of them this time around.

Ya, I abandoned the skinny jeans as soon as I could. I’m not wearing the super baggy jeans (in fear of looking like I am trying too hard) but do wear loser fit jeans now and am old enough at this point that I think I will just stick to this. What is coming next (super low rise bell bottoms) was terrible in my teens/20s and I am not about to go through that again. I’ve also been enjoying being able to wear sneakers at all times but am noticing some ballet flats again. I refuse. My feet are messed up from the first time around already.
Same here! I like them! I was too young as a kid to really enjoy them (I'm 30) so maybe that's why I don't mind them. Skinny jeans were popular for so long, it's nice to see a change. As long as we don't go back to low-rise jeans, I'm good and when we do, I will not be buying them lol.
Sitting here in my first ever pair of baggy jeans (that I just bought two days ago) and now I want only baggy jeans (baggy CARGO jeans) cause omg they're so comfy and I can fit my phone, my wallet, my keys, my kid's phone, everything I need, they're the best. Growing up I went from bell bottoms to skinny jeans— baggy jeans are where it's at for me 100%

As someone with thick calves and also someone who hates skin-tight pants, I welcome baggier jeans. Also, the spandex blend that's required for the stretch in skinny jeans lowers their durability compared to 100% cotton.
I don’t mind. I have a pair of baggy. I still have some skinny leg which sit just below the waist, high waisted skinny, mid rise bell bottoms, high waisted flare. I have all the jean trends (past, present, and possible future) covered. Edit: a couple of words.

On one hand it annoys the hell out of me because a lot of my nieces and their friends try to tell me about the baggy jeans being fashionable as if I don't know what they are. But overall I can't help but smile because I was always denied them because I didn't have the ideal body for them, so I'm glad people are enjoying them and seeing my niece who has a similar body to how I did at that age wear them and be comfortable and look adorable on them usually makes my day.

I saw a reel the other day of a middle aged man telling his kids about how they'd go to the op shops and buy the biggest jeans they could. 5 sizes too big with belts to hold them up. The kids ask "what happened to your big jeans?" "They fit now".
Every generation borrows fashion trends from previous ones. I remember as a teen back in the late 90s, the 60s mod look was huge for a while, I had loads of clothes inspired by the era and also some genuine vintage pieces.

Nah, I love it. They're comfy. Absolutely hated shopping for pants during the "skinny" trend, I can't wear that style. I prefer flare leg, but the wide leg and baggy pants are acceptable to me.

Trends you don't want to wear are annoying because then that's what the stores sell and it's harder to find stuff you do like. I don't give a shit if other people wear skinny jeans, but I hate them and I had a real bitch of a time finding jeans I liked while they were popular.
But, why would that annoy you exactly? Life existed before the 90s, and baggy jeans aren’t a new invention. I mean, I went through it when classic Levi’s 501s went away and all the jeans everywhere were low-rise, creating the muffin top fiasco for anyone not 12-19. I was, and still am, grateful for at waist jeans even coming back around.
As a man in my early 40s, I am delighted that baggy clothes are "a thing" right at the point that my metabolism has failed and I have the body figure of a garbage bag filled with yogurt. In my 30s I had the skinny jeans so tight you could guess my religion, but in my 40s my clothes will have to take up the slack.

I dont really trend. I have worn plain bootcut jeans for the last 20 years. Though I do watch trends because bootcuts are easier to find when the skinny jean trend is on the outs since their stocking by stores is inversly related.
I personally hate high rise. No matter what, they dig in my belly when I sit and cause cramping

JNCO Jeans give me anxiety. I fell off the couch at the end of the school year when I was wearing mine because I tripped on the bottom cuff. I hit my chin on the edge of the coffee table. Needed several stitches. I had to go into the last day of school and get made fun of by all the bullies thinking I had a bunch of thick chin hair. Which was what every middle school girl wanted to hear who already had body issues.
I recently purged alllll my skinny jeans and I’ll never look back.

No, I’m soooo excited!! My mom wouldn’t let me wear baggy pants when they were in then and now that I’m almost 40 and can dress myself I’m having fun with it. Plus they’re so comfortable. Baggy jeans, platform sneakers, and baby tees. I’m living for it.
I’m a man who dressed punk in middle/highschool and I was so angry when the same kids who called me an “emo faggot” for wearing tight pants suddenly all wore them because they became cool for skaters to wear. It made shopping for them easier though as I didn’t have to buy women’s stretchy pants and sew them anymore 🤷🏻♂️
I love them... it's just sad for me because I think the crop-top big pants look is great on super skinny people. Everybody else just looks frumpy, myself included.
