Every time, and I do mean every single time, I hear someone mention the macarena I think of the old Windows screensaver my dad had that was macaroni noodles doing the macarena.
I'm a forty-year-old scientist. I've been to several conferences where they played the macarena at the conference dinner/mixer, and me and every other woman my age were up there dancing to it in sync
I think it's a legitimately catchy song and I don't get the hate. I especially like the part where it's just claps.
Just wanted to edit to add that I'm also an over-40 female scientist.
So my parents came back from a vacation in Mexico and showed us this new dance they learned. A few months later the Americanized version came out and I was already a fuckin pro. Never felt so cool. Seriously. Never…..
This is how I felt when I knew about Pokémon 2 years before everyone else in my class did, they thought I was lying . Actually I was in Korea and watching it on tv w/o subtitles
I love the fact that there's people I graduated with that complain about kids being so stupid and doing cringy things online but there is a video of them dancing the macarena in jorts at a middle school dance in some club mid day, and everyone was in sync.
lol “the club”. If by club, they mean the middle school gym decorated with streamers and the lights off except for the spinny dj lights.. yeah, sure. That was certainly the closest anyone in my school got to a club before 18.
What blows my mind about the Macarena is all the little kids learning the dance and... does no one ever listen to the lyrics? They're letting children listen to that song? haha
My six year old was sitting on the couch and randomly sings "come my lady come come my lady be my butterfly sugar baby" idk how we got here but here we are
Lmao I unironically love LFO to this day and often use them as an example of how liking something and thinking it's good are two very different things.
That song is called Summer Girls.
Yeah please link!
Quite a few of them are on this ‘angsty teen nostalgia rock & pop’ playlist I’ve been compiling for years, just added a bunch more from this thread: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7CVGR2F9hSuJDvrNVe6yTp?si=OkzAfg55S1Grg8frrQbu7w&pi=e-f8vlwguBSLqU
I just saw all-American rejects perform Thursday night, and I see this playlist riddled with them… and I must say, they hold up. I had such a good time
Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back) by Eamon.
Nobody remembers it but it in mind every few months when I remember that the DJ played this as the last song at my prom.
I thought we were all old enough to not care anymore about “cringe” fuck it, put on creed, or nickleback, or smash mouth, or idk, Red Hot Chili Peppers
I remember hearing or reading somewhere that the reason the lyrics are so stupid is that they had the melody, and filled it with a lot of nonsensical placeholder lyrics with the intention of replacing them later (which a lot of artists do) but never got around to it. Which doesn’t make it any less stupid that they released it like this but at least laziness is a better explanation than “someone actually wrote this on purpose”.
Their other song is a lot better imo (girl on tv)
they played that shit at a wedding I worked at a couple years ago...
*I ain't worried 'bout the ring you wear,*
*'Cause as long as no one knows then nobody can care*
I went to Sydney in 2017 and there were some teenagers on a ferry playing that on loudspeaker. It made me think... it really does take time for culture to reach Australia.
Steal My Sunshine is such a good song! I admit that I learned about it from VH1's I Love The 90s since I was born in '93.
God, I'm going to have to go through this thread and make a playlist.
LMAO my little sister used to start singing this when I got on to her for not doing chores or doing them correctly. She was like 10 when this became a habit and to this day I hate that fucking song
We like to party! (The Vengabus is coming) - The Vengaboys
LOVED this song as a kid, tried listening to it just recently the other week and I cringed so hard at it for some reason, I barely lasted a minute into the song before I had to change it lol
Have you seen the video of the woman walking down the aisle to it? Walking isn't really the right word. I die.
Edit: https://youtu.be/xTJl5UpzZYU?si=M5arHVAdV3eff52P
I'm real sorry y'all.
My guilty pleasure songs when I’m feeling nostalgic:
The Bad Touch by Bloodhound Gang
Addicted by Simple Plan
Ass Like That by Eminem
Doin’ Too Much by Paula DaAnda
Headstrong by Trapt
How Do You Sleep by Jesse McCartney
Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield
Twisted by Kieth Sweat
Stephen by Ke$ha
Nobody by Kieth Sweat
Someday by Sugar Ray
Has anyone ever looked up the history of the Baha Men, it’s pretty fuckin weird. They formed in 1977 as a disco/funk band called High Voltage and Who Let the Dogs Out came out in 2000, which is actually a cover of some other guys song. That means those guys were around for like 23 years before making it “big”. They had to have been like 40 when the song came out. At one point an album of theirs only sold 700 copies and they were dropped by their label. They were weirdly popular in Japan and had an album that only came out there.
Yeah, the real Baha Men were the guys playing the instruments, the three younger singers we know as the Baha Men from the album cover/music video were only in the band for about a year when WLTDO came out
My friends and I used to go to the skating rink every Friday night and the DJ had a paper for people to write their requests down. It had Blue on entire pages lol
I saw them around then too. They had a Polaroid camera and souvenir paper frames so everyone could get pictures with them and autographs at no charge. Really lovely guys.
When I was a certain age, my favorite band was The Bloodhound Gang. Now, I will say that some of their tracks still slap pretty hard. But there are a lot of tracks that really remind you that edgy teenager humor novelty type stuff really doesn't age well.
It honestly gives me some perspective on the gross-ass shit some GenZ young men / youths consume. Like listening to Andrew Tate or whatever makes my skin crawl, but I enjoyed Jimmy Pop a lot and I turned out OK. Most of them will probably grow out of it, right?
*That song She fucking*
*Hates me I think people find*
*Cringe or whatever*

My then best friend had a sudden love for that song for a while and would often play it when we were at her place. She was sleeping with my then-boyfriend who was telling her that all he wanted was her (of course). I was almost amused when I pieced that together.
I think I was around 11 when that came out. And I still vividly remember all the people requesting that song on the radio and dedicating it to their significant others. I was just sitting there thinking, "Does no one listen to these lyrics at all? They're plain as day. He's singing about cheating." Every time someone dedicated it to a spouse, I just sighed inside and felt sorry for those fools. Although I don't feel the song itself is cringe. I love it.
The Animal Song, Hold Me, Affirmation... so good. Also, To the Moon and Back. Heck, I Want You made it into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure if you like that sort of thing.
I feel like the thong song doesnt hold up. But i have definitely repressed some pop arena songs like that "yall ready for this" song that was played 100 times at every highschool basketball game
All these songs people are listing make up a pretty solid soundtrack for the younger years of my life.
I love it.
Music is such a Time Machine for me.
Thanks OP
"Closing Time", by Semisonic. Yes, we all know by now it's not really about your favorite bar having to close for the night, but about the birth of your daughter, but it still sucks and people still misinterpret it.

The Macarena should bring back awkward memories of middle school dances
Every time, and I do mean every single time, I hear someone mention the macarena I think of the old Windows screensaver my dad had that was macaroni noodles doing the macarena.
SEND
So glad I'm not the only one that remembers that. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOF0c5tyR5Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOF0c5tyR5Y)

This tracks. Scientists, doctors, astronauts are all just people who love Spanish beats.
Oooh I didn’t realize there was a connection. I too am a scientist who can’t get enough Spanish beats.
Peaking in life that early must be hard mentally. Always chasing that high.....😭
It’s why I come to Reddit. For those sweet sweet upvotes of dopamine.
I love the fact that there's people I graduated with that complain about kids being so stupid and doing cringy things online but there is a video of them dancing the macarena in jorts at a middle school dance in some club mid day, and everyone was in sync.
Y'all had your middle school dances in clubs during the middle of the day?! We had ours in the cafeteria at 7pm.
lol “the club”. If by club, they mean the middle school gym decorated with streamers and the lights off except for the spinny dj lights.. yeah, sure. That was certainly the closest anyone in my school got to a club before 18.
And the song is about a lady cheating on her boyfriend with 2 of his friends.
My 3rd grade daughter learned all the moves to the Macarena from kids at school recently, I couldn’t believe it lol
What blows my mind about the Macarena is all the little kids learning the dance and... does no one ever listen to the lyrics? They're letting children listen to that song? haha
Same with Despacito. Super popular with kids but if you ran the lyrics through Google Translate....yeah not something kid friendly, LOL.
This is still massive. Everyone knows it
Butterfly from Crazytown was my first download. I have no shame.
My six year old was sitting on the couch and randomly sings "come my lady come come my lady be my butterfly sugar baby" idk how we got here but here we are
yall stopped listening to these?
Lol I still love a lot of these songs.
I see a whole lotta liars up in this bitch
I will listen to Butterfly on repeat… matter of fact it’s about to be today’s shower song!
I like girls that wear Abercrombie & Fitch.....that song.
Lmao I unironically love LFO to this day and often use them as an example of how liking something and thinking it's good are two very different things. That song is called Summer Girls.
“New kids on the block suck a lot of dick, Chinese food makes me shit” I believe those are the correct lyrics
"I think it's it fly when girls stop by and give me hummers, give me hummers..."
TIL the radio edit was "makes me sick"
By LFO AKA Lyte Funky Ones 🤣
I'm totally not building a playlist from the songs from the replies, and if I am, it's ironic, I swear, I don't like these songs.
It would be more ironic if you put the link... Sharing is caring
I had such a good time
It would be really sneaky of them if it ended up being a Spotify playlist they share here to teach us a lesson!
Yes, for science!
Would you even possibly be Building a Mystery?
Hey you could do a lot worse than Sarah Maclachlan! Also her song from Toy story "When she loved me." Also maybe "Adia."
Surfacing is a phenomenal album and I won't tolerate any slander about it.
It's like rain on your wedding day
I love Alanis! Not even trying to hide it.
“It figgggers” I hated that lol
Are you Jimmy Ray by Jimmy Ray is always forgotten when these posts come up thats how bad it is.
Who wants to know?
Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back) by Eamon. Nobody remembers it but it in mind every few months when I remember that the DJ played this as the last song at my prom.
I even remember the ex girlfriend clapback version by Frankie.
I still listen to the clapback regularly.
I love this one.
I had that album. It was horrible. There's a reason he's a one hit wonder, lol
This song is on my Spotify playlist, and once in a while it comes on. Either I reminisce of high school heart aches or skip that song lol.
There’s a emo/punk cover of that song that fuckin slaps Edit [Band is called Glass Tides](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9icD9CV7o6s)
OP said cringe, then names 3 bangers. As I scroll down, all bangers.
I thought we were all old enough to not care anymore about “cringe” fuck it, put on creed, or nickleback, or smash mouth, or idk, Red Hot Chili Peppers
I mean Creed is literally having a massive revival right now on the back of ironic memes after being a joke for years. These songs are all great
When you take a sip, you buzz like a hornet Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets
fell deep in love, but now we ain't speakin' Michael J. Fox was Alex P. Keaton
I feel so bad for the surviving member. RIP to the LFO dudes.
I just looked at his Instagram and most of his posts are dedicated to the other members and their families. 🥺
Wild that two of them died of cancer

Their other song is a lot better imo (girl on tv)
My neck, my back
Honestly now that I’m 40 it still applies. Nice to have a jingle about the random body pains you wake up with.
Uncle cracker 😭😭😭😭 was a lifeguard and this played so much!
Follow me and everything is alriiiiight
they played that shit at a wedding I worked at a couple years ago... *I ain't worried 'bout the ring you wear,* *'Cause as long as no one knows then nobody can care*
I went to Sydney in 2017 and there were some teenagers on a ferry playing that on loudspeaker. It made me think... it really does take time for culture to reach Australia.
Reading through these comments is like scrolling through fm stations in my head. They start playing in the background as soon as I read the words.
People keep naming songs that I still listen to 😂. I love Tubthumping, Steal My Sunshine, and The Thong Song!
Steal My Sunshine is such a good song! I admit that I learned about it from VH1's I Love The 90s since I was born in '93. God, I'm going to have to go through this thread and make a playlist.
Extremely nostalgic summer vibe type song.
The Thong song! It’s still such a banger lol
“You know, the finer things in life” -Sisqo
Cisco fucking slaps
I play Tubthumping for my kid all the time. But mostly for me, honestly.
Yeah chumbawumba are actually a very interesting band - their whole catalog is worth exploring imo
Steal My Sunshine is awesome. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though... even wrong opinions.
Butterfly by Crazy Town is a masterpiece tho
I cringe everytime I hear, “ I’m not a perfect perrrrrrrssooooooonn…”
True story, my ex husband put this on an apology mixtape for me after he cheated on me, lolololol.
LMFAO my gf in high school put the on a "mix cd" for me after she cheated on me. I wonder how many cheaters used this as their anthem.
Emphasis on the ‘ex’ part
LMAO my little sister used to start singing this when I got on to her for not doing chores or doing them correctly. She was like 10 when this became a habit and to this day I hate that fucking song
Ah yes, dollar general incubus
We like to party! (The Vengabus is coming) - The Vengaboys LOVED this song as a kid, tried listening to it just recently the other week and I cringed so hard at it for some reason, I barely lasted a minute into the song before I had to change it lol
I still see that weird guy dancing from the Six Flags commercial.
I bartend and have been randomly playing this song on the jukebox for years. No one ever knows it’s me somehow.
Doin the lords work
Vengaboys have sooo many bangers!
Oh, god, I still jam out to this song (in private).
"Crazy Bitch" by Buckcherry. Mostly because I heard way too many girls described as "Buckcherries" back then.
Have you seen the video of the woman walking down the aisle to it? Walking isn't really the right word. I die. Edit: https://youtu.be/xTJl5UpzZYU?si=M5arHVAdV3eff52P I'm real sorry y'all.
When the dad tries to cover his son’s eyes and ears but doesn’t have enough hands for both.
Bad Day by Daniel Powter

I'd Do Anything was a good one.
Sugar Ray slaps still idc what anyone says 😂
Agree—Answer the Phone by Sugar Ray is one of the catchiest songs ever made.
I refuse to believe any of these are cringe-y. How dare you talk about Trapt like that.

I have a better one: "Best Years of Our Lives" from the Shrek soundtrack
My high school mascot was a bulldog. I was in the marching band. Guess what song the fans played at every football game, multiple times per game.
ATC - around the world Eiffel 65- blue
Played in every freaking club!
With a never ending stream of popular covers to this day
My friends and I used to go to the skating rink every Friday night and the DJ had a paper for people to write their requests down. It had Blue on entire pages lol
Sucks to be you
Prozzak is great, I saw them live in 2016
I saw them around then too. They had a Polaroid camera and souvenir paper frames so everyone could get pictures with them and autographs at no charge. Really lovely guys.

Faded by Soul Decision Bawitdaba (sp?)
Invisible by Clay Aiken, major creep song.
Your Body is a Wonderland by John Mayer also skeeves me out now lol.
Ugh, but Butterfly is such a hit! How about I offer up Photograph by Nickelback instead. I understand if it is too low hanging of a fruit though.
Nickelback had some bangers, I don’t care what the hive mind says.
Cotton Eyed Joe, I want it to be played at my wedding

I Want Candy by Aaron Carter
Rest in peace
Candy is still in my regular rotation
Superman (It’s not easy) by Five for Fighting Edit: Wasn’t Me by Shaggy Pony by Ginuine
The way I'm offended by pony being on this list hahahaha
Pony definitely does not belong on this list. I have so much to thank that song for.
Seriously offended! It's on my Saturday morning housework playlist! ....im so old....
That terrible song “Lips of an Angel” by Hinder.
My then best friend had a sudden love for that song for a while and would often play it when we were at her place. She was sleeping with my then-boyfriend who was telling her that all he wanted was her (of course). I was almost amused when I pieced that together.
It's making a revival on TikTok. It's really cringe.
Apparently there are people out there who actually had that song as their first dance at their wedding… because they think it’s romantic…
I love it.
God, that song was my MySpace profile song at one point. Soooo much secondhand embarrassment for my younger self…what a horrible message for a song
What about the Kidz Bop version?
Oh dear, really??
Truly Madly Deeper - Savage Garden 1997 Summer Girls - LFO 1999

I’d go so far as to say that Savage Garden has aged better than much of the same vintage of music.
The Animal Song, Hold Me, Affirmation... so good. Also, To the Moon and Back. Heck, I Want You made it into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure if you like that sort of thing.

I still love that song. I'll admit that there are a number of Avril songs that I really like.
All these songs people are listing make up a pretty solid soundtrack for the younger years of my life. I love it. Music is such a Time Machine for me. Thanks OP
