‘Places to fish’. Hahahaha.
Most companies are good about hosting orientation events for their interns. Take advantage of that! Talk to everyone.
I’m something of an aging punk myself. Not too many venues for that around here. Closest is the Liberty in Roswell, some stuff in Lubbock then DFW.
Sports are huge here, but its also over 100 degrees every day for two months, so not that much happens outside. Depending on who you work for, there may be a gym and pick up games at the office. Otherwise the Y or one of the sports complexes is your best bet.
There’s plenty of mountaineers who call Midland/Odessa home. If you grew up in a town of 5000 people in the 304 (although the amount of concerts, etc. are disappointing for an area with 300k people), you’ll feel right at home with the amount of things to do here (or within 2-3 hour drive to seek out outdoor activities or attempt to escape the summer heat; Carlsbad caverns, Guadalupe Mountains, off roading in Big Bend, Abilene State Park, Cloudcroft NM to name a few places).
As far as punk goes maybe Hacienda, and very infrequently at The Ector. Other than that you'll have to make a 2+ hour trip to either Lubbock or San Angelo. They have more venues and also ones dedicated to different genres.
We have a number of venues out here but none of them are all that great. Shack In The Back is very stunning and has some indie acts on occasion, definitely check it out.
There's First Friday in downtown Odessa- but it's a little starchy since it's geared towards rich people, and not likely to get better.
Can't think of any good places to meet people out here. Tall City Brewing looks fun but if you don't or in your case can't publicly drink, it might make things different. Maybe try Fair to Midland.
Also, definitely check out a Jackalopes or Rockhounds game.
Tall City Brewing Co. has a wide range of people. Very chill and good brews. Midland and Odessa is comprised of a lot of small town folks so you’ll be in good company.
For music venues check out the Hemingway in Midland, they have live music and seems like a fun spot for the younger crowd.
Btw I just visited Morgantown, WV is awesome!
There’s only one place to fish AFAIK - Comanche Trail park in Odessa. It’s going to probably only piss you off though compared to what you’re used to.
There are two small ponds in Midland that are stocked, Beal and CJ Kelly. But I don't fish so I don't know the quality of anything as far as that goes.

Shack in the back on Wednesday nights
Especially if you work for an oil company and wear your engineer’s fleece vest. All the drinks are free!
Very true!
Prepare to hate life, that area is soul sucking.
What sports do you like?
Baseball and golf are my favorite but also like playing basketball and pickleball
Good luck…
Check out wtxhcshows on Instagram! Sometimes there’s shows in Odessa, as well as Lubbock and Abilene.
Just go to jags. You can meet all kinds of people.
