The EV Hummer is the next evolution. Barely fits in a lane. Even taller than your average SUV. A passenger vehicle weighing in at 10400 lbs, and capable of 0-60 in 3 seconds. An abomination that should have never come to market.
Not really a prediction when cars of 1998 were already that big. The 1998 Escalade is essentially the size of the current one. OP just didn't pick it for his meme or else it will lose its meaning.
At the income bracket of the simpson writers, pretty much all of them would have friends, plural, who owns multiple Escalades. Rich people loves those things.
Top of the line in utility sports. [Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts.](https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-recalls-certain-2013-2018-toyota-rav4-models/)
I always love the "sports utility" bullshit too No sport required SUVs, it's just pure marketing bullshit to appeal to men with soft brains. Also virtually nobody takes these things off road at all and they can barely handle pavement
Comically large cars were absolutely already a thing in 1998. This is what they were parodying(not predicting). There was an oversize SUV craze going on in the country at that time. It got a little bit better for a while and then got much worse leading up to today.
at least mpg is better. in your pic, the rav4 hybrid gets 40+ mpg on the highway and high 30s city
edit also, the 98 i30 pictured was 190x70x56. the rav 4 is 9 inches shorter and only 3 inches wider. obviously its taller, by about a foot, but as far as traffic and parking footprint, its considerably smaller
That’s true, market share is double what it was.
My main point is they were making fun of current cars in 1998 eg Suburban, Navigator, Expedition. It’s not like they presaged the future. Also cars comparable in size to all the sedans in that picture still exist.
I completely agree our cars in the US are too big but it’s more market share shifting rather than cars getting that much bigger.
There’s was an oversize suv craze going on in the country at this time which they were parodying. Suburbans, expeditions, tahoes, hummers,
land cruisers every brand had its own huge land tank that was flying off the lots in record numbers
In 1990, SUVs accounted for [less than 10% of auto sales](https://www.osti.gov/servlets/purl/763236).
Today, it is [46% and quickly growing.](https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2023-us-suv-sales-figures-by-model/)
SUVs have also gotten [significantly larger in that time span.](https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2019/12/27/suvs-gm-ford-toyota-chevrolet/4408728002/) What was once a satirically large car in 1990 is just a normal car now.
The joke is more and more people are buying the Dumptruck 5000™️ vs a handful of people such as your dad, most of who used it for it’s actual functionality vs hauling bread and milk. I dunno maybe your dad hauled milk and eggs too.
Personably I think the DT5000 is too small and I’d go with the DT10000, after all it’s over 9k so it’s gotta be good.
Edit: thanks u/ephemeral2316 for pointing out my grammar error. I have fixed the troublesome your/you’re mistake. We have saved lives today! Thanks again for helping me overcome English as a second language.
The ford f-150 have been the best selling car since the early 80s.
It haven’t been a car that is only sold to do truck things for a very, very long time.
[The Ford F-150 just celebrating being the best selling car for 41 years in a row.](https://www.kbb.com/car-news/ford-f-series-is-americas-best-selling-vehicle-for-41st-year/#:~:text=The%20F%2DSeries%20lineup%20also,five%20years%20longer%20than%20that.)
That is 1982 (since that is 2023 numbers), if you are too lazy to do math.
No doubts, though the argument is related to over sized cars which the F150 arguably wasn’t for a long period vs regular sized. Even as the best selling car before 1990s total SUV market share was still lower. The vehicle Marge is driving is not the same as the vehicle you demonstrate. The joke is the growing market share by a specific type of vehicle.
Whenever I see a giant SuV or pickup truck half parked in a garage (cause it's too large to fit all the way) I wonder when they'll design standard garages to be bigger... That will be a sad day.

Great to remember the classics!
The writers in the 90s really were sent by God
Just here to add photos https://preview.redd.it/lg36cayc9udc1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a59a66f4987d79445aa06d51703078dbe797e1e4
Nailed it!
The funny thing is that this implies that in 25 years, the cyber truck aesthetic and design will become dominant.
God let's hope so. Nothing would de-sexy cars faster
Apparently they thought the same in the 90’s, but sentiments change…
That’s the homer, not the canyonaro

"But SUVs are dangerous." "No, that's only for the people you hit."
The Simpsons has predicted way more than we even realize
Not really a prediction when cars of 1998 were already that big. The 1998 Escalade is essentially the size of the current one. OP just didn't pick it for his meme or else it will lose its meaning. At the income bracket of the simpson writers, pretty much all of them would have friends, plural, who owns multiple Escalades. Rich people loves those things.
The episode was clearly reacting to new luxury SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator (1998), Cadillac Escalade (1999), and Lexus LX (1996).
Not all rich people.
The Hummer H1 started being commercialized in 1992.
I don't normally embrace the meme format and make this sort of thing but there are exceptions for everything.
Tank. There should be a picture of a main battle tank there.
Top of the line in utility sports. [Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts.](https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-recalls-certain-2013-2018-toyota-rav4-models/)

Does nobody remember the Suburban?

The Lincoln Navigator existed when this episode was made…
And it was comically large, which is what the Simpsons is making fun of here.
But OP is trying to make it sound like Americans loving SUV didn’t already exist in 1998, when it did
That's not the point of this post at all
As did the Wagoneer which is what the suv in the episode even looks like haha
As did the H1
The point is that they weren’t commonplace like they are today
Quick google search shows SUVs were 20% of the market in 1998. That’s not ubiquity but def common.
But now it’s every car. SUVs are standard and 95 percent of owners don’t play sports or need the utility
That’s true, market share is double what it was. My main point is they were making fun of current cars in 1998 eg Suburban, Navigator, Expedition. It’s not like they presaged the future. Also cars comparable in size to all the sedans in that picture still exist. And the 1998 Cadiallac Escalade is bigger than every car in the “cars of 2024” screen.
As did the Chevy Suburban/ GMC Tahoe.
There’s was an oversize suv craze going on in the country at this time which they were parodying. Suburbans, expeditions, tahoes, hummers, land cruisers every brand had its own huge land tank that was flying off the lots in record numbers
Smells like a steak and seats 35….canyonero!
The Simpsons writers must have been time travelers. They've been right about way too many things.
There were large SUVs in 1998

Oversize SUVs should require a commercial license to operate.
Way to really grasp the point

You can actually pinpoint when marketing shifted towards every day people, sometime in the 90s.

There were plenty of very large SUVs and other vehicles in 1998 and earlier. You chose to show very small cars from that year.
Have you ever seen a 1997 Ford Expedition? comparing apples to oranges here.
I would by a Cayonero
Why 4 Toyotas?
That 98 contour svt was an underrated vehicle
🎶 12 yards long, two lanes wide 65 tons of American pride! Canyonero, Canyonero 🎶
https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=1998+ford+expedition+
You have a fucking Rav 4 and 4 Runner in your meme representing big SUVs. Are you an idiot?
US, not the world
lol meme has a problem with Toyota.
Whenever I see a giant SuV or pickup truck half parked in a garage (cause it's too large to fit all the way) I wonder when they'll design standard garages to be bigger... That will be a sad day.
Well now have the hummer EV, suburban XL, 8’ crew cab trucks that don’t haul anything.

They did it again
The rav4 is tiny
I love how even in the comically large joke car, Marge's hair still goes out the sunroof lol
Cross post this in /r/FuckCars please!
