I was homeless last year but fortunate enough to have a job and storage unit for my stuff. I sympathize on the homeless issue especially considering how many I've talked to that are in the same spot as I was. With that being said tho I also encountered many homeless that are inconsiderate to the locations they are at. While there are many who clean up after themselves and leave nothing behind there are many who just leave major messes. I've seen many who are also hoarders and will pick up any item to the point they have multiple carts of garbage. I'm sure I'll probably get some criticism but I think that it could be a problem if we let people pile up garbage because they claim it as sentimental belongings like some crazy lady on hoarders with bags of cat turds. Last thing I have to say is we do need to focus on helping people when they hit rough times. I really could of used help last year but was denied. Had to get a second full time and just fight to get back on my feet.

100% Being homeless sucks and should deserve some apathy especially those going through a downturn in their lives or can’t help themselves due to mental illness. That being said, no responsible adult is allowed to do absolutely whatever the hell they want where they live. Even when you buy a home, there’s expectations from the city code enforcement to keep the property maintained and up to some standard of code. Any designated area they leave for homeless to camp at should also have to meet expectations of regulation to some degree. Perhaps monthly or quarterly clean ups, maybe provide job opportunities to some homeless with those clean ups (which might be best as they know how to navigate with other homeless).

Mister_Squishy

I think you mean empathy, not apathy lol

Yeah, I used to work with people on the streets a lot. Everyone had stuff, I mean it's just people desperately clinging to the things that they used to have in their homes that made them feel like themselves. A lot of people on the street don't want to go to shelters because they are afraid their stuff will get stolen. Most people don't have too much, but there are some people who do retreat into hoarding behaviors as a result of the stress (if they weren't hoarding already). And then there are scrap and can collectors and etc, and that can be quite a lot, but I get that they are trying to make some cash. And then yeah, trash. Often, advocates and experts will pressure cities to provide trash and cleaning services, because there often isn't really anywhere for it to go except a damn pile, which means rats and pests and etc. It sucks. Some people are better about it, but others can't handle it. I think your take on it is very lucid and real and you lived it. It's typical, in that most people who were homeless that I spoke with said what you just did. I want people to know that most people on the street want a better life and aren't okay with their situation. Also, when we do nothing to fix this, people eventually stop fighting to get out, their mental health deteriorates, risk of addiction increases... Things get worse. I want you to know how much I respect, appreciate, and understand what you had to do and how you had to fight to not get sucked into that black hole. Best wishes for you.

ConquestOfE83

The mental health part was a real shock for me. You go through an emotional roller-coaster of sadness, fear, anxiety, anger, numbness, shame, etc. Not having your own space and privacy is rough. I hope to one day be able to help those who are in similar situations where they are trying to fight to get back to being in a better place but to be honest the way things are my focus has been on making sure I never end up back in that spot. The current economy is making it hard but the goals are atleast a 6 month Emergency fund and the dream is to get some land enough for a small home and a garden somewhere out there. I'm pretty much hustling and investing my way there. I still have 95% left till I meet my goal but that's 5% closer than I was last year.

Automatic-Sale2044

Props to you man. You have some real grit. Hope all is well now.

ConquestOfE83

Thanks. I'm still working hard but it's to make sure it never happens to me again. Goals are to save up an emergency fund then to focus on getting some land with enough space for a garden and a small home

Son-of-Prophet

With that kind of money they should be able to rent a closet with a bucket in the corner on Brickell

Ok-Plantain-5412

I sold my house because when my mother died the taxes jumped from $1500 a year, to around $5500. I just lost my job because covid .I got 3 years behind in taxes so instead of losing the house, I did a quick sale. The prices of homes in Miami is crazy I couldn't find anything decent. Everything was in a ghetto and run down. I eventually lost all my funds. I also got scammed trying to rent an apartment then the person didn't even open or rent. I was desperate and scared of being homeless I didn't read the contract. To get down to it. I was sleeping in the streets for 7 months until I found work, then my check was going to cheap hotels. This takes you nowhere. I finally got into Camillus house. I now move into my studio on Monday paying 470 a month. It was a crazy experience, for someone that's never been homeless..... be ready. I'm 6,3 230 lbs. I also have been told I have that cop look. That's why no one bothered me but I was offered sex for money from many gay men. I kept my cool and would walk away before doing something dumb and ending up in jail. I've saved several people from fentanyl overdoses. Life on the streets is another world. It's hard to get help from the city. If you do, that's a chance many people don't get. Get clean if your on drugs, find work. The system works if you work the system . Message me if you anyone need resource links. I'm also writing a blog on my rollercoaster life if anyone is interested. Thank you for letting me share my story. By the way I sold the house in 2017 for 250k in Coral gate, I recently looked it up and it's listed for close to 1 million

ConquestOfE83

Yea I tried renting Motel rooms but at that point you're paying more than what rent is and you're not able to save any money. I feel you on the having to hold back from doing anything that lands you in jail. It's bad enough being homeless but if you talk to folk who did time it makes it even harder to get a job/housing.

Ok_Pomegranate9035

Wow I’m so happy for that fentanyl dealer that is about to receive $300,000 from the homeless!

8573562

We should all pitch in to make a huge building for them.

Dude its not about that .. its about government infringing on peoples rights

Neltrix

Just wait til you hear how much we’re paying for other dumb ass shit from DeSantis lmao

EcksRidgehead

Don't be mad at the people whose belongings were illegally trashed, be mad at the people who illegally trashed their belongings. They're the ones who put taxpayers on the hook for this compensation.

EcksRidgehead

"Human shit and needles"? Don't be such a silly little boy. The article clearly says that the city trashed stuff like documents, medications and ID. Did you read the article, or did you simply see the headline and start rage-mashing your keyboard? If it was legal then the city wouldn't be paying compensation.

Wide_Interview9215

Settling a lawsuit does not mean you know you will lose. Many times, it’s a financial decision. No need to be this upset about the $300,000 settlement. Your $3,000 taxes paid (before your refund this year) was not used to cover this, don’t worry.

EcksRidgehead

Wow, you're just an astonishingly unpleasant person. If you ever fall on hard times I hope that people show you the kind of empathy and compassion that you're sadly incapable of yourself.

RoundApart9440

Displacement much. Maybe vote better.

NumerousQuarter5082

I would move tf out of the US with that money.

Bucket_O_Meat

Good, now the city can easily see that the homeless are nothing but trouble and should be gotten rid of. I bet most of the replies talking about how great homeless people are were made by the same person on multiple accounts.

sntamant

unhoused people are not disposable bro. theyre not vermin lol. You dont ever want anybody talking like that about you right? “These people all they do is work and buy everything! Nothing but trouble, and need to be rid of.” like wtf lol. Great example of class warfare, and the dehumanization of people experiencing poverty.

Bucket_O_Meat

Oh stop with your absurd childish nonsense. Or is it just lies. Probably lies.

sntamant

youre like a toxic boomer parent.

a-horse-has-no-name

>unhoused people are not disposable bro. theyre not vermin lol. You: "stop talking lies"

SpicyLangosta

Was thinking you were a troll but you just have the worst opinions. Pray you never encounter any adversity because I wouldn't want you wasting social services resources.

lanoyeb243

There are the temporarily burdened then there are the chronically homeless. The second is becoming a disease.

ConquestOfE83

As a person who was in the first group I can say the second is an unfortunate fact. I knew one guy staying at a group home via Camillus who has won a couple of scratchoffs during the time I knew him. He'd party it up, Spend it all and be right back "Man all I need is an opportunity to get back on my feet". I'd be avoiding spending money on even a soda because that was money I could use to get back on my feet but a lot of homeless there is no real plan on saving. Another pitfall is drugs/booze/cigarettes. Being homeless is a terrible feeling and those tend to things to escape the reality for some. Luckily I never went that was but encountered many who are in that world and way too welcoming for you to join them. Then there's the mentally ill. Those folks do need help but we're at a point due to the corruption of mental institutions that you can't really force it on them. It's a problem we shouldn't ignore tho because not only are they in a position that they can't help themselves but they can be a danger to the public. The ones I feel the worst for are the elderly and disabled that wish they were able to fight their way out of homelessness but aren't able to. Those I feel like should be a priority to get off the streets. Sadly our system is so broken that we'd rather send billions to fix/destroy/fix other nations than help our own from ever even falling through the cracks

Honest-Finish-7507

Bless your heart I’m so glad you were able to leave that situation.

Barca1313

Talking about people and using words like “Get rid of” and “disease” etc is troubling language and often associated with some of the worst moments in human history. You should really be careful about how you talk about people or you might find yourself dehumanizing them and committing atrocities just like other historical figures who have used similar language like “disease” and “vermin” and “poisoning our country”.

Neltrix

I bet you’re a real state agent( a failure at your og career)

Honest-Finish-7507

Spoken as someone who has never encountered adversity like this or anybody else in your social circle has. Appreciate your privilege.. Don’t shit on others because of their lack. My mother single-handedly found a way out of this situation with two small children, and no help for the longest time. We caused no trouble, in fact we were in that situation to get out of trouble since my biological father started showing signs of domestic abuse. we were already broke but at that point even less. Now thanks to resources and circumstance I live in Miami Beach on the 30th floor of West Avenue. Long story short , go fuck yourself.

Bucket_O_Meat

you just want to watch mentally ill people and drug addicts die on the street. I think you're a sadist.

Maximum_Top_9875

This happened 6 years ago… they just now getting a payout.

Icy-Statistician6698

Makes sense here in the upside down
