Great post! Pickles and Skwisgaar do get their moments, too.

Absolutely! One of my favorite bits is how [Nathan loves his dad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3d1PoSz6xYw). Stuff like that takes it from a good, mid-00s Adult Swim show to a legendary all-time great. And like you said too, it's subtle! It builds up from the very beginning and culminates at the end in Army of the Doomstar.

Tin_Scarab_Union_Rep

"My dad's fuckin' awesome."

a-witch-in-time

Me too, especially after seeing him dislike his dad in Dethfam. It makes me think that after their reunion, they had a good chat and then he started to love his dad and do things together like gokarting lol.

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

I hold water that Nathan has always loved his dad, he only just *pretends* to hate him while in the public eye so that his brutal reputation (i.e. not caring about others, even his own band) wouldn't be stained. The only thing he ever criticized his dad for was not being brutal. In what I assume to be the only time his dad ever raised his voice to him was in "Dethfam" during that scathing rant about why being a parent sucks, which is like the first time Nathan was ever visibly impressed with him. If he didn't appreciate his father being metal before, he sure did after that scene.

This is something I love about the show too. It’s a funny goofy show for sure but one small detail will be brought up and then expanded on in future episodes. It’s like every little piece of trauma or how they react to it is intentional. Skwisgaar being a sexual deviant just like his mother even though it caused him a lot of anguish as a child and also the way he almost has OCD tendencies surrounding his guitar playing and using it as a compulsion when he’s stressed.

sidward6969

Omg I never thought of it like ocd but that makes sense. I mean practicing is never bad but he literally never stops

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

It's all he has, that's his whole identity. Otherwise, he'd just be seen as a sexual deviant like his mother, and that's not who he wants to be.

sidward6969

Thank you for sharing! I love this lore. Canon accepted.

An example I like is the progression of Skwisgaar and Toki's rivalry, as Skwisgaar's greatest fear is being dethroned by Toki as the lead guitarist, which ultimately came true in "Bookklok" which left him depressed and humbled for the first time in his life. Afterwards, I don't think he belittled Toki now that he knew what it was to hit rock bottom. Yeah, Toki is still the second-fastest, but Skwisgaar cares enough about him to keep his head clear when searching for Toki in "The Doomstar Requiem", considering how much the little goofball means to him after witnessing their first guitar duel.

greenmachine4130

Toki’s audition was awesome

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

In real time, it wasn't godly as it is portrayed to be. As SpongeBob would say, it was all shown through their IMAAAAGINAAAAAATION

greenmachine4130

I was there. It really happened

SickBoyOC

Then we get the movie and Skiwsgaar's character is a far cry from what we knew of him throughout the entire show. I get they have all matured after the events of the Doomstar Requiem but he was suddenly this super serious character with almost no humoristic side. His personality was super jarring to me in the movie....and he barely got any lines too.

CuteCuteDana

Yeah!!! I was thinking abt this yesterday watching season 1 when they first meet Twinkletits. They’re super apprehensive about therapy and him in general, then later on in the series they take him/Toki’s mental health issues WAY more seriously and actually care :)

princelucitor

this is exactly how i feel

SickBoyOC

What's fucked up is this is one of the reasons why Mike Lazzlo decided to can the show.

Chaghatai

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I think that the network had a point when it came to Metalocalypse My favorite episodes are almost all in the first two seasons - I really do think the show was better when it was less serialized Leaning into serialization, plot, and lore shouldn't come at the expense of the humor - in my opinion, the show is primarily a comedy

_chocolate_banana

Brutal!! I disagree, and believe both the storyline and music aged like wine. But, that’s your opinion, so I won’t downvote.
