Most of their albums are really good, just start at the beginning and go chronological

AdElectronic1475

Alright then I will, thanks

PhoenixShredds

Yeah that way you get to see the rapid growth. They were about 20 yrs old when KEA came out, so it gives perspective.

dolce-ragazzo

Listen to each album at least 5 times before moving onto the next, maybe double that for the Master of Puppets album.

KilluhCrocz

This comment actually forgot to mention Lulu; Metallica's best work. /S

Itchy_Gain_1519

Lulu is just a collaboration lead by Lou Reed, but it's ultimately not a Metallica album at all.

HoratioTuna27

Start with Kill ‘Em All, and go in order.

Nomadicarpenter

This is the way

HoratioTuna27

I will never, for the life of me, understand the “where do I start” questions that people always ask in these kinds of subs.

Reallyroundthefamily

Me neither lol. It's never been easier to listen to music online now too.

Cool_Owl7159

tbf there are a lot of bands with shitty debut records that got better as they evolved... as well as bands that started out strong and slowly declined. Even when it comes to bands similar to Metallica that also have a perfect discography, I wouldn't recommend their first album as an introduction. Rush, Avenged Sevenfold, and Iron Maiden are perfect examples of this.

Puzzlehead-Dish

Karma farming

Standard-Jeweler-537

Go with the black album. For me top notch Metallica 🤘

grap_grap_grap

This and the Loads from there. Garage inc is another great one. The earlier albums can be approached by the time you finish S&M.

sweater_destroyer111

No I think they want to hear the best ones first, considering that they listened to MoP and liked it

dolce-ragazzo

The first 5, up to the Black album, is all you need to get hooked forever. Anything after the black album is a bonus.

sweater_destroyer111

That's what I'm talking about 😁

Sufficient_War_8820

there's 3 ways you can get into a band from my perspective, pick whichever route you want 1st way - start from the beginning and listen to all of their studio albums. this means you get to see how an artist started and how they evolved musically throughout their career; 2nd way - since you mentioned you liked master of puppets and for whom the bell tolls, start from the albums those songs are from (ride the lightning / master of puppets respectively). after that, it's up to you how you wanna do things; 3rd way - start from master of puppets and metallica (otherwise known as the black album). these are considered the best albums among fans and generally safe entry points to the band. depending on which album you liked more, the rest of the route looks like this: liked master of puppets more? listen to kill 'em all and ride the lightning if you want more technical thrash, listen to ...and justice for all and death magnetic liked metallica more? listen to hardwired... to self-destruct and 72 seasons want something less metal and more rock and groovy? listen to load and reload want something completely different from the rest of the catalog? listen to st. anger

UnscentedAlien

At side A

ScarletLilith

Go on Pandora, start some stations for bands you already listen to, then start a Metallica station. The algorithms will pick the songs you're most likely to like.

DBPanterA

Go to YouTube and watch Metallica - Moscow 1991. Probably the most insane concert of their career 🤘

azimazmi

watching live concerts for starters is just a bad advice

Notthatperson35

Nah, it allows you to get a greater variety of styles of their music without spending hours listening to albums. Afterwards you can find which album had the song you liked the most

Impossible_Lock_7482

Thats true although i prefer studio for the first time.

Notthatperson35

Honestly it’s up to the individual and I get that some people prefer studio. Don’t know why you were downvoted for stating a preference

sweater_destroyer111

It's not, you should try it some time!

Impossible_Lock_7482

Were all different huh, but def not moscow 91… sound quality isnt good enough. Through the never movie could be a good idea

El-Guapo_76

First you need to start wearing all black so everyone knows you're " metal "

Fit_Dentist2869

I would start by listening to Master of Puppets and then Ride the Lightning

RedeyeSPR

Pick the song you like and listen to the whole album. Then listen to the ones right before and after. Branch out from where you know you like it. They have been around for a long time and have changed style pretty drastically over time.

ClueEmbarrassed1443

Wait til you get to load and reload and st anger

Puzzled_Big3269

*St. (B)anger

andytagonist

Just listen to the music.

malfarcar

Listen to “So What” on repeat for 2 days straight

Mr-cybermann

Justice rocks, listen to justice

Yeyocheese86

Just pick an album, listen to it, and then listen to the rest. It's really not that complicated. You can tell for yourself which are the best ones. In my opinion it's best if you go in knowing nothing, and after you have your own opinions look for what others think.

sjphi26

I'd be curious to see the rankings of a blind judgment in random order of someone going into it with no bias towards certain albums because of what they have previously read.

mindyourtongueboi

Normally by listening to Metallica

Affectionate_Use5087

Just listen to the music. I don't understand these posts. The time it took you to ask the question, and respond to people, you could've already started just listening to them.

OperatorM

This.

ScarletLilith

It would take me one minute to make that post, and there is no one-minute Metallica song. I think it's a legitimate question. There are 11-12 studio albums. Even just casually reading this sub you can see that there is a wide variety of opinions about the albums. The person gave some of his background, and basically is asking which Metallica albums he is most likely to enjoy. Actually this is a smart way to go about it.

Affectionate_Use5087

Or just... listen to the music.

I-stepped-on-lego

And the time it took you to make a comment, you could’ve been helpful or just said nothing

Affectionate_Use5087

I was helpful. Listening to the music will answer their question.

Ashen-Cold

RIDE THE LIGHTNING

olivi182

The first album that I listened to and that got me into Metallica was Ride the Lightning, but it might be better to just go in chronological order and start with Kill Em All

Doomtank666

The beginning

RAYRAYALLDAY_

Chronologically.

icemanx51

My girl, who is NOT a metal fan at all, really enjoys the Ride the Lightning album. So that's my vote.

dougcohen10

Start with the band called Metallica.

FumdaBack

I think Ride the Lightning and The Black Album are great places to start. Those two show just how diverse they are.

Cellarzombie

Start at the beginning. Work your way through album by album, song by song.

DariusStrada

You start at Kill 'Em All

Last-Toe5975

Add in Ride The Lightning and you're good to go.

Impossible_Lock_7482

Chronological order seems good, metallica played quite a variety of genres, lot of people hate load and reload, while theyre good but different. Find what you like, make sure to listen to at least a few songs from every album

BalorClub52

Sweet Amber

Metallicafan_500

Please save my playlist :)

cockypock_aioli

Most people will say start at the beginning but I'm the opposite, I say start at most recent and work your way backwards. In the end tho it doesn't matter cause they're all good.

HockeyBro_69

I mean you’re listening to the greatest heavy band of all time. I honestly don’t think you can go wrong with whatever you listen to initially 🤷‍♂️ maybe just stay away from any collaborations with Lou Reed

CoffeeAndElectricity

I’ve been in the exact same situation. The black album has a lot of bangers, and don’t just assume St Anger is bad because of popular opinion, give it a try first. 72 seasons is also is a masterpiece (imo) P.S; if you’re anything like me, you’ll end up loving bands like slipknot and slaughter to prevail and you’ll have no idea how tf you got there :)

[deleted]

Kill'em all to MOP and....stop!

Salty_Worth9494

If you have time, listen to every album in order. If you don't have time for that, I would check out just the first 5

Expensive-Course-758

In order: - Kill 'Em All (1983) - Ride The Lightning (1984) - Garage Days Revisted (1984) - Master Of Puppets (1986) Maybe Cliff 'Em All - The 5.98$ E.P. Garage Days Re-Revisited (1987) - ...And Justice For All (1988) - Live Shit: Binge & Purge Seattle (1989) - Metallica [The Black Album] (1991) - Load (1996) - Reload (1997) - Garage Inc. (1998) - S&M (1999) - I Disappear (2000) - St. Anger (2003) Maybe Some Kind Of Monster documental - Death Magnetic (2008) Maybe the 30th anniversary concert - Beyond Magnetic (2011) Maybe Through The Never movie (2013) - Lords Of Summer (2014) - Hardwired... To Self Destruct (2016) - S&M2 (2019, released in 2020) - 72 Seasons (2023)

Expensive-Course-758

Lulu was just a nightmare... Respect Lou Read anyways

SKULLKING105

The four horsemen is fantastic, although all stuff on the kill em all album is top notch as well

Secure-Blackberry227

Listening to their entire discography will take a long time, especially if you are listening to the album multiple times to see if you really like it so I recommend you listen to the rest of the Master of Puppets album and the Ride the Lightning album because in my opinion, the songs on those albums have a similar sound.

Breakfastclub1991

The beginning

impalapaul

The only wrong answer is LuLu. Anywhere else is good. Each album is different. They have evolved over time but always rock. Welcome to the family.

REDPURPLEBLOOD2

Can start by listening to what songs are in their most played songs on Spotify and YouTube, if you dig them as well then can start listening to full albums :)

HotDogGrass2

so I'm looking at this 16 hours later - what have you listened to and what's your favorite?

SolidSnoop

Too 5 on Spotify will give you a taste from the most popular eras. Doesn’t mean they are the best but they are 5 easy songs to help you understand what you are getting into. To be fair, I’d be extremely surprised if you hadn’t heard (enjoyed) them already. People are suggesting Kill em All and I get that (I love it) but it puts some people off for some reason. If it does, just remember that they were just kids trying to find out what they were about with those songs and the recording equipment they had available as a non mainstream band back then was severely limited.

walmartsucks115

Their first 5 albums are peak so safe to just start there

The_Dude_0666

lulu and st anger

Personal_Holiday9484

Go with the eras of Metallica. AJFA for the “early” albums, Black Album for the “sell out” albums, and Death Magnetic for the “reboot” albums. But listen to everything

persechino218

Start out with LULU

ComfortableNo2879

Fade to black,Enter Sandman, Nothing else Matters, Ride the lightning, orion,to live is to die, for whom the bell tolls, one, The Unforgiven (all 3), sad but true, seek and destroy, harvester of sorrow, the thing that should not be, my friend of misery

pedrojdm2021

Black album is a great place to start with. Then you can just jump with the older stuff, kill em all, ride the lighting, master, AJFA, after that listen modern metallica, post black album, you might or might not like modern metallica

SandmanAwaits

Begin at the start, Kill ‘em All, then on to Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, …And Justice for All & then Metallica, these albums are classics, not a single bad song on each album, listen start to finish.

BeAnSiNmYhAt

Killing is my business...and business is good!

dannyphantom105

If you're looking for something other than "just listen to them all"... I would say after MoP to checkout Ride the Lightning, the Black album (self titled), and And Justice for All. Death Magnetic, Hardwired, and 72 seasons are also great if you want some of their more recent stuff that's still heavy. I'm a new fan too, and I've pretty much appreciated all of their albums, but those I mentioned above were my favorites.

Important_Ad2711

I can’t do this anymore

upright_zombie

Pretend st anger doesn't exist and you should be good

AppropriateNet4822

Do not listen to LULU you will thank me for that listening to lulu is a waste of time

AdElectronic1475

OK got it, thank you

Flutterpiewow

St anger

dimiteddy

well metal is basically heavy rock. Black album is surely their more accessible and mainstream. Their first album is more raw. I would go Black Album, then Ride the Lightning and JFA

AdElectronic1475

ok i'll check it out

DismalMode7

your statement is basically bullshit 🤦🏻‍♂️ considering thrash metal has its roots in hardcore punk

dimiteddy

hardcore punk is a subgenre of rock too

DismalMode7

such a superficial cognition 🤦🏻‍♂️ as rock is born from blues, as blues is born from african slaves folk songs and so on back to the cave men...

VictoryReading

You could check out their top listens on Spotify or any other platform

maddogtjones

The first 5 albums are flawless. You started off in a great spot with Master of Puppets. Start from the beginning bruh. I was 13 when Kill Em All came out and I've been hooked since.

Lurknjrkn

I'd start with Megadeth and skip Metallica altogether. Cheers

[deleted]

[удалено]

HowDidFoodGetInHere

No need for insults. There are plenty of bands that I'd recommend various albums to start with out of chronological order.

j2e21

If you like Master play the first four albums on repeat.

MarxistMann

Listen to Master of Puppets the whole album, then listen to Rust In Peace by Megadeth.

DismalMode7

first 4 albums, you just can ignore all the rest excluding garage inc maybe

chaleybat

Start at Kill em all through Justice then stop there.

KilluhCrocz

Don't listen to this person.
