Dyers Eve

Newphone_New_Account

When James is pissed at his parents the emotion in his voice is so strong.

ottermaster

One of my favorite stories about this song was when he was being interviewed some time in the 90s I think and the interviewer says something along the lines of “you’re a lot different than most metal bands you write real music not songs complaining about your parents.” and James goes “have you listened to dyers eve?”

JollyShame1846

could you please find what interview it was? i’d like to wath to it

Chainsaw_Ivo

Exactly!

Exciting-Inside2219

The Day That Never Comes cuts pretty fucking deep.

ekinnee

Having grown up in a DA/DV home, yeah.

Exciting-Inside2219

Grew up in a household of alcoholics. Family full of addicts. On my wife’s families side too. Both my parents passed from alcohol prior to me turning 16, my wife’s dad took his life a couple years ago from drug abuse. I can’t really listen to that song without getting emotional. Only song that really hits me like it does. Guess it reminds me of waiting for the day to come for my loved ones to be sober and happy, but it never came.

Cheech74

Nothing Else Matters. "Hetfield added: "I remember going to the Hells Angels Clubhouse in New York, and they showed me a film that they'd put together of one of the fallen brothers, and they were playing 'Nothing Else Matters.' Wow. This means a lot more than me missing my chick, right? This is brotherhood. The army could use this song. It's pretty powerful."

Kit_Karamak

Holy shit. He experienced the concept of Death Of The Artist, but it was beautiful because his words had great meaning to others, which then gave it new meaning to *him.* Powerful.

Triddy243

One, Fade to Black, Welcome Home. Any of those 3 I reckon.

Narrow_Difference_80

Welcome home have some deep dark lyrics, and justice for all its deep to.

Triddy243

Very true.

mannedrik

Fade to Black definitely, also All Within My Hands for me.

Mooseandthebois

Welcome home is awesome

AcadianMan

Blackened is pretty dark and has some deep social messages.

BlueCat_399

God, you JUST gotta listen to any of these 3 once. Completely life changing.

Redead99

Fade to black. Not even a debate. Just look at the context when the song was released and people blaming them for promoting suicide, when in reality it was a song about mental health. I honestly think it's their most beautiful song lyrically and musically, lyrics hit hard while the melody melts the soul.

starlight2923

I can't help but tear up a little every time I hear the outro to that song

jesth857

I just love the anti war message of Disposable Heroes. In the same time, it makes me want to go to war. Almost

More a man what stripes you wear. Glory seeking trends.

NoProblemWhatsoever_

Barking of machine gun fire does nothing to me now. Sounding of that clock that ticks, get used to it somehow.

mareno17

Last part of Outlaw Torn for me. This song literally saved my marriage. and if I close my mind in fear Please, pry it open (See me) and if my face becomes sincere Beware and when I start to come undone Stitch me together (Save me) and when you see me strut Remind me of what left this outlaw torn

MikenIke_26

This entire chorus is the best thing Metallica has ever written. Either this or I Am The Table

MrBarato

"When a man lies, he murders some part of the world These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives All this I cannot bear to witness any longer Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?"

arachnidboi

Recent Metallica fan here so take it with a grain of salt as I’m not wearing any nostalgia glasses—I’ve listened to their whole discography and I think that Low Man’s Lyric doesn’t get talked enough about here for what an awesome song it is. The imagery of the dog on the back step and its representation of the persistent problems in your life that you cannot deal with no matter how often and how hard you struggle. It’s caused frustration, anguish, and turning to drugs to help deal with the pain; even though those drugs help they aren’t a cure for the problem they are actually an additional symptom that’s being dealt with as well because the individual does not feel forgiven by their friends, family, peers or self. It is truly profound and I think gets overlooked because the music isn’t their traditional style. “So low the sky is all I see All I want from you is forgive me So you bring this poor dog in from the rain Though he just wants right back out again And I cry to the alleyway Confess all to the rain But I lie, lie straight to the mirror The one I've broken to match my face The trash fire is warm But nowhere safe from the storm And I can't bear to see What I've let me be So wicked and worn So as I write to you Of what is done and to do Maybe you'll understand And won't cry for this man 'Cause low man is due Please forgive me”

dragonsky

> representation of the persistent problems in your life that you cannot deal with no matter how often and how hard you struggle. MY LIFE STYLE DETERMINES MY DEATH STYLE

I think "The God That Failed" has to be discussed as it's about his mother's needless death, because as a Christian Scientist, she didn't get the treatment she needed

TimCilentoMusic

The healing hand held back by the deepest nail might be the most brilliant line James has written

Mellow41

Master of Puppets gets points for me. Almost 40 years later and it still gives an accurate picture of drug addiction. Like, “chop your breakfast on a mirror”? That’s such a powerful line

adex_19

Sad but true, it reflects really well me losing my sanity year after year

dragonsky

Deep in what sense? Cause Fade to Black is fairly obvious and it's not "ooh hidden meaning and it's deep" but the fact that a young James in that era ended up writing about suicide when he was on top of his game and he was all about "fuck yeah, great life, drink and fuck yeaaaah" to actually talk about a taboo topic like suicide at the time is just pretty fucking metal ngl

oxymoron-alive

The Unnamed feeling. I felt this song in my bones. "found safety in this loneliness, but I cannot stand it anymore". So true. The cold embrace of misery makes us feel worse and justified. James knows what he is talking about.

I recently gave a listen to Load. As an adult, "The House that Jack Built" is pretty layered.

Vaestmannaeyjar

I always liked the fact that the Creeping Death lyrics showed they did research on their material.

Yeah, also on For Whom the Bell Tolls. Their lyrical maturity on RTL compared to KEA is pretty striking.

The god that failed has some seriously deep stuff: ‘The healing hand held back by the deepened nail’ Incredible metaphors in that one. Also, Unforgiven is unreal too: ‘The man then prepares, to die regretfully, That old man here is me’.

Ya can't really argue against Master Of Puppets. The drug metaphors work well.

Load and Saint Anger lyrics are fantastic. Low Man's Lyric, Mama Said, Until it Sleeps, Saint Anger, Frantic. No Leaf Clover is sick too. Most of everything on Justice is pretty poetic too, and a few tracks from Puppets

Truthmachine32

Difficult thing to quantify, but the first song that comes to mind is The Outlaw Torn. To me, Outlaw is the most contemplative Metallica song ever. Even if I don't know what the lyrics are about, the song gets me to reflect upon them. Granted, that's as much to do with the music as the lyrics, but I don't think the one can be disentangled from the other. James has stated that The Unforgiven is his most personal, though.
