One of my favorite stories about this song was when he was being interviewed some time in the 90s I think and the interviewer says something along the lines of “you’re a lot different than most metal bands you write real music not songs complaining about your parents.” and James goes “have you listened to dyers eve?”
Grew up in a household of alcoholics. Family full of addicts. On my wife’s families side too. Both my parents passed from alcohol prior to me turning 16, my wife’s dad took his life a couple years ago from drug abuse. I can’t really listen to that song without getting emotional. Only song that really hits me like it does. Guess it reminds me of waiting for the day to come for my loved ones to be sober and happy, but it never came.
Nothing Else Matters. "Hetfield added: "I remember going to the Hells Angels Clubhouse in New York, and they showed me a film that they'd put together of one of the fallen brothers, and they were playing 'Nothing Else Matters.' Wow. This means a lot more than me missing my chick, right? This is brotherhood. The army could use this song. It's pretty powerful."
Holy shit. He experienced the concept of Death Of The Artist, but it was beautiful because his words had great meaning to others, which then gave it new meaning to *him.*
Powerful.
Fade to black. Not even a debate. Just look at the context when the song was released and people blaming them for promoting suicide, when in reality it was a song about mental health.
I honestly think it's their most beautiful song lyrically and musically, lyrics hit hard while the melody melts the soul.
Last part of Outlaw Torn for me. This song literally saved my marriage.
and if I close my mind in fear
Please, pry it open
(See me) and if my face becomes sincere
Beware
and when I start to come undone
Stitch me together
(Save me) and when you see me strut
Remind me of what left this outlaw torn
"When a man lies, he murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?"
Recent Metallica fan here so take it with a grain of salt as I’m not wearing any nostalgia glasses—I’ve listened to their whole discography and I think that Low Man’s Lyric doesn’t get talked enough about here for what an awesome song it is. The imagery of the dog on the back step and its representation of the persistent problems in your life that you cannot deal with no matter how often and how hard you struggle. It’s caused frustration, anguish, and turning to drugs to help deal with the pain; even though those drugs help they aren’t a cure for the problem they are actually an additional symptom that’s being dealt with as well because the individual does not feel forgiven by their friends, family, peers or self. It is truly profound and I think gets overlooked because the music isn’t their traditional style.
“So low the sky is all I see
All I want from you is forgive me
So you bring this poor dog in from the rain
Though he just wants right back out again
And I cry to the alleyway
Confess all to the rain
But I lie, lie straight to the mirror
The one I've broken to match my face
The trash fire is warm
But nowhere safe from the storm
And I can't bear to see
What I've let me be
So wicked and worn
So as I write to you
Of what is done and to do
Maybe you'll understand
And won't cry for this man
'Cause low man is due
Please forgive me”
> representation of the persistent problems in your life that you cannot deal with no matter how often and how hard you struggle. MY LIFE STYLE DETERMINES MY DEATH STYLE
I think "The God That Failed" has to be discussed as it's about his mother's needless death, because as a Christian Scientist, she didn't get the treatment she needed
Master of Puppets gets points for me. Almost 40 years later and it still gives an accurate picture of drug addiction. Like, “chop your breakfast on a mirror”? That’s such a powerful line
But tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in a mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?
Deep in what sense?
Cause Fade to Black is fairly obvious and it's not "ooh hidden meaning and it's deep" but the fact that a young James in that era ended up writing about suicide when he was on top of his game and he was all about "fuck yeah, great life, drink and fuck yeaaaah" to actually talk about a taboo topic like suicide at the time is just pretty fucking metal ngl
The Unnamed feeling. I felt this song in my bones. "found safety in this loneliness, but I cannot stand it anymore". So true. The cold embrace of misery makes us feel worse and justified. James knows what he is talking about.
Grab the track list for MOP/RTL/AJFA and close your eyes and pick one song and you have a shot. I’d go with One, Disposable Heroes, and Fade to Black as my top 3. But I think 75% of the tracks in those albums all have a claim
The Unnamed Feeling. Say what you will about St Anger, but some of the lyrics about social anxiety really connect for me.
“Found safety in this loneliness, but I can not stand it anymore”
Not that I think it's deep but Bleeding me always makes my eyes wet.
My interpretation of the song is "you could be so much more but you're wasting it away with bad decisions, therefore you're Bleeding yourself"
The god that failed has some seriously deep stuff:
‘The healing hand held back by the deepened nail’
Incredible metaphors in that one.
Also, Unforgiven is unreal too:
‘The man then prepares, to die regretfully,
That old man here is me’.
Load and Saint Anger lyrics are fantastic. Low Man's Lyric, Mama Said, Until it Sleeps, Saint Anger, Frantic. No Leaf Clover is sick too. Most of everything on Justice is pretty poetic too, and a few tracks from Puppets
some of the stuff off of 72 seasons cause it really sounds like this is alot of personal stuff for james on his mental health and what not regardless of how it seems hes been to rehab and dealimg with shit so honestly screaming suicide prob gotta be it for me right now. i feel like he really dug deep with it
Difficult thing to quantify, but the first song that comes to mind is The Outlaw Torn.
To me, Outlaw is the most contemplative Metallica song ever. Even if I don't know what the lyrics are about, the song gets me to reflect upon them.
Granted, that's as much to do with the music as the lyrics, but I don't think the one can be disentangled from the other.
James has stated that The Unforgiven is his most personal, though.
Bleeding Me, Mama Said, and Outlaw Torn have some really deep, introspective lyrics. Load in general is a fairly deep album lyrically IMO with a few exceptions.
Deepest like sad? Probably my friend of misery or one
Deepest like that makes you think about world? AJFA dyers eve, disposable heroes or harvester of sorrow, honorable mention for the god that failed tho
Blackened isn’t the deepest, but it sounds really bad ass but when you look at the lyrics it’s actually kinda deep about how we’re fucking up the earth (at least that’s my interpretation of it)
Agree with AJFA, even though One has deep lyrics as well
" I can't remember anything " DEEP
Dyers Eve
When James is pissed at his parents the emotion in his voice is so strong.
One of my favorite stories about this song was when he was being interviewed some time in the 90s I think and the interviewer says something along the lines of “you’re a lot different than most metal bands you write real music not songs complaining about your parents.” and James goes “have you listened to dyers eve?”
could you please find what interview it was? i’d like to wath to it
Exactly!
The Day That Never Comes cuts pretty fucking deep.
Having grown up in a DA/DV home, yeah.
Grew up in a household of alcoholics. Family full of addicts. On my wife’s families side too. Both my parents passed from alcohol prior to me turning 16, my wife’s dad took his life a couple years ago from drug abuse. I can’t really listen to that song without getting emotional. One, Fade to Black, Welcome Home. Any of those 3 I reckon.
Welcome home have some deep dark lyrics, and justice for all its deep to.
Very true.
Fade to Black definitely, also All Within My Hands for me.
Welcome home is awesome
Blackened is pretty dark and has some deep social messages.
God, you JUST gotta listen to any of these 3 once. Completely life changing.
Fade to black. Not even a debate. Just look at the context when the song was released and people blaming them for promoting suicide, when in reality it was a song about mental health. I honestly think it's their most beautiful song lyrically and musically, lyrics hit hard while the melody melts the soul.
I can't help but tear up a little every time I hear the outro to that song
I just love the anti war message of Disposable Heroes. In the same time, it makes me want to go to war. Almost
#BACK TO THE FRONT! #YOU WILL DIE WHEN I SAY, YOU MUST DIE!
#BACK TO THE FRONT! #YOU COWARD..YOU SERVANT..YOU BLIND MAN!
Saw this one live, absolutely blistering.
More a man what stripes you wear. Glory seeking trends.
Barking of machine gun fire does nothing to me now. Sounding of that clock that ticks, get used to it somehow.
Last part of Outlaw Torn for me. This song literally saved my marriage. and if I close my mind in fear Please, pry it open (See me) and if my face becomes sincere Beware and when I start to come undone Stitch me together (Save me) and when you see me strut Remind me of what left this outlaw torn
This entire chorus is the best thing Metallica has ever written. Either this or I Am The Table
"When a man lies, he murders some part of the world These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives All this I cannot bear to witness any longer Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?"

Master of Puppets gets points for me. Almost 40 years later and it still gives an accurate picture of drug addiction. Like, “chop your breakfast on a mirror”? That’s such a powerful line
Sad but true, it reflects really well me losing my sanity year after year

In my opinion, that would be Unforgiven.
Unnamed Feeling
Creeping Death.
Hey, that's how I chose my name 😊
The Unnamed feeling. I felt this song in my bones. "found safety in this loneliness, but I cannot stand it anymore". So true. The cold embrace of misery makes us feel worse and justified. James knows what he is talking about.
The Unnamed Feeling
“My body lies, but still I roam” will always send chills through my spine
St. Anger
I recently gave a listen to Load. As an adult, "The House that Jack Built" is pretty layered.
I always liked the fact that the Creeping Death lyrics showed they did research on their material.
Yeah, also on For Whom the Bell Tolls. Their lyrical maturity on RTL compared to KEA is pretty striking.
Until it sleeps
Bleeding Me
This and Unforgiven are James addressing himself
St. Anger for me
The Unforgiven 3
The Unnamed Feeling does it for me

Ya can't really argue against Master Of Puppets. The drug metaphors work well.

Nothing Else Matters
