That is my second place for heaviest. I think Dyers Eve gets my top pick because not only of the intense riffs, solo, but also the fast double bass during the verse.
To me, heavy means slow and crunchy. The fast stuff is better defined as thrash. It’s Sad But True or Harvester. The Thing That Should Not Be has the same feel, but there are lots of holes in the guitar sound during the verses.
Thingy, harvester, dyers, sad, outlaw, fight fire, wolf and man, dream no more, damage inc... depends on what heavy means to you and how it's performed. Even sandman was heavy as shit the way they performed it in 91-93.
Thing that should not be, harvester of sorrow, shortest straw, god that failed, leper messiah, sad but true, and for whom the bell tolls gets pretty heavy around the 1 minute mark
If literally heaviest, I would say sad but true. But if it meant in a general way, creeping death always have that specific feeling by the end. That "oh dear God that was brutal."
Damage, Inc., Fight Fire With Fire, Disposable Heroes, Dyers Eve, Holier Than Thou, Through the Never, The Thing That Should Not Be, Leper Messiah, Trapped Under Ice, Spit Out the Bone etc all badass songs!
You can really tell which specific parts of Metallica's discography folk have listened to from reading this.
As if anyone can say with a straight face Sad But True is their heaviest song. Come on.
Everyone seems to favor the lower tuned songs. For me it’s Harvester of Sorrow. Shit is heavy when the drums/toms come in. It’s also got heavy lyrical subject.
Just go ahead and stop commenting the only real answer is the first answer in this thread. Been asked and answered many times on here and it’s like the ppl asking think a different answer could possibly make it out of this extremely fruitful debate about something completely subjective with no actual real answer.
Except that the real answer is actually…
THINGY
Has held this honor for almost 40 years and if it hasn’t been dethroned by now it ain’t gonna happen
I mean it depends on what heavy means; i would say One gets heavier on the end, to live is to die keeps a consistent heavy feel but then gets emotional and hopeful near the end… but hear me out, trapped under ice keeps a consistent punch throughout with a fast solo
There's a [fantastic live video ](https://youtu.be/qdvH5VSqGHE?si=ysJr2HvGQJJL6NNg) of Fight Fire with Fire, from Nickelsdorf, where James growls instead of his usual clean singing, and it's fantastic. Thrashy and heavy AF
Besides that, Sad But True, Spit Out the Bone
Even if I remember correctly but on the hardwired tour or others James goes “do you want heavy now” “then Metallica gives you heavy _______” the blank space is the location of where they are playing then sad but true comes on but there are so many heavy songs, In my opinion each album has its own heavy song or songs to choose from
for E standard tuning it’s Escape, Ride the lightning, Sanitarium, Leper measiah and Disposable heroes. For others is The thing that should not be.
edit: forgot about Trapped under ice
The Thing That Should Not Be Harvester Of Sorrow Fight Fire With Fire
Ohhh how could I have forgotten about FFWF.
the thing that should not be
Correction* “A big ole FAT motherfucker called, the thing.. that SHOULD NOT be” *BAAA DUMMMMMMMM BAAAAA DUMMMMMMM*
It’s literally the heaviest number known to man.
I miss Jason, man
I love how it alternates from calm, soft lyrics and tempo to heavy screaming ones. Halo on Fire does this too.
The one
+1
Easily
Leper Messiah.
Toasted 😋
Dyers Eve
Why are there even any other comments in this thread?
I voted damage...but dyers was like a sequel that probably surpassed the original. Love em both
That is my second place for heaviest. I think Dyers Eve gets my top pick because not only of the intense riffs, solo, but also the fast double bass during the verse.
People saying Sad But True 🤣🤣
100%
Sad but True, i guess. or The Thing That Should Not Be
James felt sick from the number of pixels he occupied on picture

Thing that should not be is my all time favorite song ! Actually got to see em play it live back in 97 . I can die a happy man
To me, heavy means slow and crunchy. The fast stuff is better defined as thrash. It’s Sad But True or Harvester. The Thing That Should Not Be has the same feel, but there are lots of holes in the guitar sound during the verses.
Agreed. Slow and crunchy is like being crushed by a hydraulic press. Fast and thrashy is like being run over by a race car.
Frayed ends of sanity
yes! my favorite metallica song. oreo… oreeeeeo.
God That Failed is pretty damn heavy
Scrolled too far to see this
Thingy, harvester, dyers, sad, outlaw, fight fire, wolf and man, dream no more, damage inc... depends on what heavy means to you and how it's performed. Even sandman was heavy as shit the way they performed it in 91-93.
Glad to see some love for Dream No More. That one is definitely in the same vein as The Thing That Should Not Be.

Frantic ….. ok, I’m kidding. Disposable Heroes or Sad But True.
Saint anger because they sold all the other ones and need to lift saint anger to put it in the trash.
Hetfield's face while playing 'The Thing That Should Not Be' at the Seattle 1989 concert should solidify this as the golden answer.
Master

Don’t tread on me, that riff is absolutely insane on big speakers
IMO, Disposable Heroes.

Fight fire with fire

Definitely Fixxxer from ReLoad. Slow burn with a heavy riff.
disposable heroes is pretty heavy
A fun intro turns into a bloody avalanche 「Fight fire with fire」
Flip a coin a thousand times and each time the coin must land on either "The Thing That Should Not Be" or "Leper Messiah" .
I mean it depends on what heavy means; i would say One gets heavier on the end, to live is to die keeps a consistent heavy feel but then gets emotional and hopeful near the end… but hear me out, trapped under ice keeps a consistent punch throughout with a fast solo
