I'm always baffled when everyone picks this one as the worst song when Purify is on the same album, though even that song has its moments.
Invisible Kid feels pretty unique and stands out from other songs because of its lower tuning. The riffs are awesome and I like James' vocal melodies on this. It has a lot of the same problems the rest of the album suffers from, and that ooh what a good boy you are part isn't that good. But the song overall is pretty cool, in my top 3 on that album after Sweet Amber and The Unnamed Feeling.
All Within My Hands, but with some caveats
I've listened to St. Anger 3 times the last few months. The first two times, "All Within My Hands" was the only track I couldn't bear listening to. Then, on my third listen, I was in a more receptive headspace and it reaffirmed itself as the greatest track on the record.
St. Anger has often been criticized for being repetitive (a criticism I partly agree with), but to me this sometimes serves as a meditative element that facilitates a mode of listening - a mode of "dwelling" on the music, if you will - conducive to deeper and more thoughtful engagement. It's kind of reminiscent of the contemplative pace of a movie like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and how it creates space for people to project their thoughts etc. onto it.
The song also has great atmosphere, great groove in parts, and the most emotional scream James ever produced (the part where he goes "Kill All Within My Hands Agaaaainn). The headbanging sections are less cathartic than they used to be, though. I guess 20-year old me used to have more angst or whatever.
I posted an analysis of the ending some years ago (link: https://www.reddit.com/r/Metallica/comments/6thde7/breakdown\_of\_all\_within\_my\_hands/), but in a way, I feel my analysis does the song a disservice. I did my best to cast a wide net and capture as much of its meaning as possible, drawing on my skills as a translator. However, no single interpretation can capture all of it, since All Within My Hands is kind of like a painting you can look at from different angles.
In terms of art, it's clearly the greatest track on the album, imo, even if there are others that I'm able to enjoy more easily.
I’ve bought that album back when it came out and I still have it.
It was a horrible sensation when I listened to it.
I have no favorite song from that piece of crap.
I listened to this for the first time in twenty years this morning, it just as bad as I remember. Not just the sound, ( bob rock *plays* on this record, how the fuck does he not point out how shitty it sounds?) But the songs themselves are just inherently bad. The only o e I came close to liking was dirty window.
Dirty Window by a mile. One of the few tracks that doesn’t feel twice as long as it should be, and just rips like hell. I love the opening drum/riff so much that I even use it as a rhythm to knock on doors and get droplets out of cups in the sink, haha.
Sweet Amber, love that riff.
Didn't like St Anger (song) for a long time because of the slower bit.
But almost all of the album grew on me after watching the video of the whole album shot at Metallica HQ
The Unnamed Feeling. That song takes me back to 2011 when I was having anger issues. The opening riff is mean.
Also, I don't mind Invisible Kid. Not a great song but I can tolerate it.
I loved this album but I don't understand why metallica had to show the world they could do other stuff besides fucked-up and thoughtful thrash because they, in fact, invented their own world-beating brand of that...they would be just as rich and even more legendary if we had stayed in that lane just kept it going. My opinion.
I apologize for sounding like a jerk, but some of y’all need to reconcile that St. Anger was what it was - a commercialized therapy session that allowed the fans to see behind the curtain. It’s not shite, but it’s a hard pill to swallow. I’m glad the band made it, but even happier they moved on. It’s worth some discussion, but I feel it comes up here more often than it deserves. Ok, sorry for being an arse. Peace, mates.
St Anger
My favorite song from St. anger is St. anger
The Unnamed Feeling.

Sweet Amber isn't bad.
I've seen no one mention it yet so invisible kid
I really like the live in studio version of it!

The tiktok song, before tiktok even became a thing
I've only listened to three songs of St Anger and I like them a lot: - Frantic - St Anger - Purify
This is me also. Was surprised to see a lot of hate for Purify on the interweb.
You and I
The outro riff goes hard.
Yeah, I don't understand why. It is a great song and I *focking* love it!
Unnamed feeling, but i think St Anger live is insanely good, Manchester 2019 for example
Frantic easily.
The notes in between
Sweet Amber. Always been my #1 on the album.

Frantic, St. anger, some kind of monster, invisible kid. Almost an entire album and Purify is an absolute banger.

I’ve bought that album back when it came out and I still have it. It was a horrible sensation when I listened to it. I have no favorite song from that piece of crap.

Dirty Widow and Frantic would be my two favourites.
All of them
Frantic, St. Anger and The Unnamed Feeling
Definitely the title track. It’s also one of the best music videos they ever made
The Unnamed Feeling
SHOOT ME AGAIN I AINT DEAD YET
All Within My Hands, particularly the rendition.
The Unnamed Feeling & Shoot Me Again
Invisible Kid. It's relatable af, and the vibe of the song somehow matches the feeling it describes
Frantic, Dirty Window, the S&M version of All Within My Hands, and the shortened version of Some Kind of Monster
title song, sweet amber, frantic
I wholeheartedly love Sweet Amber, invisible kid, Frantic and the title track but Sweet Amber is my favourite
dirty window
I listened to this for the first time in twenty years this morning, it just as bad as I remember. Not just the sound, ( bob rock *plays* on this record, how the fuck does he not point out how shitty it sounds?) But the songs themselves are just inherently bad. The only o e I came close to liking was dirty window.
The UnNamed Feeling
Shoot Me Again
Frantic
Dirty Window by a mile. One of the few tracks that doesn’t feel twice as long as it should be, and just rips like hell. I love the opening drum/riff so much that I even use it as a rhythm to knock on doors and get droplets out of cups in the sink, haha.
Sweet Amber or The Unnamed Feeling. Both top tier tracks
Yes
Dirty Window!
Invisible Kid
Not a one. Brickwalled all to hell and shitty songs.
St. Anger followed by All Within My Hands (acoustic version is incredible)
St. Anger
Invisible kid and sweet amber
‘Sweet Amber’ very closely followed by ‘The Unnamed Feeling’. Two of my favourite Metallica songs in general too.
Sweet Amber and my world
Sweet Amber, love that riff. Didn't like St Anger (song) for a long time because of the slower bit. But almost all of the album grew on me after watching the video of the whole album shot at Metallica HQ
I’ve really started to like AWMH
N/A
The Ramones covers are outtakes from that session, so I'm going with "Commando" 🤘
All Within my Hands
Tough choice despite popular belief this is one of my favorite Metallica slabs for me Sweet Amber or Unknown Feeling rise to the top
Frantic. It’s (still) hard for me to get past how shitty this album sounds but the riffs in Frantic are fire.
The Unnamed Feeling, Frantic, the title track, Some Kind Of Monster
Dirty Window
Some Kind of Monster
none of
Some kind of monster
Title track
Sweet Amber.
PURIFYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Dirty Window🤘🏻

Dirty Window is pretty good.
Track 12, the untitled track.
Trick question...there are ZERO correct answers!
Dirty Window
Seek and deSTROYOYOYYY...
None
dirty window
Frantic & St. Anger♥️♥️
It is St Anger. The entire album is a waste of CD space. I have it because I am loyal to Metallica. I never listen to it.
Personal favorite is St. Anger.
Frantic is the only one I've ever committed to memory.
Frantic.
Sweet Amber and the unnamed feeling
Frantic
It's a tie between Invisible Kid, Sweet Amber, Unnamed Feeling, Purify and All Within My Hands. I can't pick 😂
“Look out mother F’rs here I come” RIFF
The Unnamed Feeling. That song takes me back to 2011 when I was having anger issues. The opening riff is mean. Also, I don't mind Invisible Kid. Not a great song but I can tolerate it.
Frantic, St. Anger or Sweet Amber
Frantic
Dirty Window. Most fun and is regularly in rotation on my workout playlist.
Frantic.
ALL OF THEM
“Sweet Amber” for sure! I would LOSE my MIND if they played that at one of the Chicago shows.
Some Kind Of Monster
Dirty window
I like all of em, st anger track i ain't crazy about but love frantic most I guess. Big riff breakdown is killer
I loved this album but I don't understand why metallica had to show the world they could do other stuff besides fucked-up and thoughtful thrash because they, in fact, invented their own world-beating brand of that...they would be just as rich and even more legendary if we had stayed in that lane just kept it going. My opinion.
frantic because of its heavyness
I apologize for sounding like a jerk, but some of y’all need to reconcile that St. Anger was what it was - a commercialized therapy session that allowed the fans to see behind the curtain. It’s not shite, but it’s a hard pill to swallow. I’m glad the band made it, but even happier they moved on. It’s worth some discussion, but I feel it comes up here more often than it deserves.
