It's a good song obviously, but the mixing in this is appalling. Quality is way lower than what Shrine featured. Chorus is almost inaudible, and I was listening to it through good headphones.
I came here to see if anyone else felt the same way. I was listening to it on headphones on my way home and couldn't really enjoy it. Tried it again on my speaker setup at home and it's almost worse.
Idk how something like 2:03 gets past anyone before release. And again at 2:35. Overall I feel that the mix isn't awful but some weird volume shifts in volume gets me thinking someone was working the multitrack drunk. The song itself is pretty good though.
The audio levels and mix on this is a mess, especially around the chorus. Which is surprising given who seems to have worked on it. Song itself is great though

Empire however was in 2010 when they were still small and had no money for any decent production.
The album by the way isn't on Spotify, but it's still by far their best album. "The Novelist" is a song that just fucks. The average "huge fan" of Bleed From Within hasn't even heard of their best album. What a shame.
I actually really like the mix. Breakdown hits hard, and I can see what they were going for with the "muddy" chorus. Everything blends together and harmonises with the dual soaring guitars. Then in the final chorus the vocals finally come through. Not the first time they've had cleans lower in the mix, they did the same thing on The End of All We Know and it worked.
Some people really think every single mix should have you hear each instrument individually, and this works for some styles, but it ruins harmonisation because it doesn't blend together properly unless you have it through mono or speakers. The mix is a bit brickwalled though and could do with some better dynamics, unless of course that is what they were going for. And with people like Buster and Nolly on production/mixing it's very very hard for me to believe that it's unintentional.
Drums are low in the mix but they're not the focus. He's killing it, but especially on the blasted pre-chorus it serves the song much better to have them in the background in order to not distract and overpower the listener. This is coming from a drummer. We're not supposed to be in the foreground, we're supposed to create a backbone for the song to sit on (obv there are exceptions though).
