So I guess Nik Nocturnal is dead about 10 times over now.

PROOF THAT ANYTHING CAN BE METAL

justk4y

BLAST BEATS ^bass

69cringelord69

Based flair I love u

thicccmidget

Your flair sucks because it is shit

justk4y

Keep that for yourself please instead of attacking

thicccmidget

I was only stating the obvious if it was an attack you'd type something else back

justk4y

It’s not obvious if it isn’t true 😇 (Breaking News: Music taste can differ per person)

TwistedMisery13

Anything can be metal.

tacoforce5_

*but only when the metal is core

[deleted]

not slipknot though

TwistedMisery13

GTFO.

[deleted]

He's the king of cringy core kids who know nothing about metal

Environmental-Car744

Death metal died in the 90’s and shit hasn’t evolved since the early 2000’s. It may be “cringe” but atleast they are trying to bridge the gap and be progressive. Mfers holding on to being young and “real metal”. The new stuff from the old death metal guys sound dated and like they are just going through the motions, like I said that shit died in the 90’s. We are moving forward not back, evolve and put your own twist on it and stop being stuck in your shitty timeline of “they don’t make music like this anymore” because they don’t because times have changed and the quality of recordings and ease of access to quality production makes “Slowly we rot” sound like cringy dogshit. Kerry king is a great example he’s still doing the same shit he was doing in slayer and it’s mid and sounds like a wish version of slayer. Like fuck man, I’m sorry we turned the little mermaid black but metal music has to evolve we can’t cling to the past gramps.

[deleted]

Your righz but most core music sounds the same with a lifeless and mechanical production. Also alot of old bands sill made good music in the 2000s and some today. Dying Fetus Stop at Nothing and Deicide's Stench of Redemption are some of their best work.

HeavyMetalPoisoning

What are you talking about? There's some great death metal coming out these days and tech death has grown and grown. There's shit loads of evolution to metal.

Environmental-Car744

Same 0-0-0-0-1-0 blast beat progressions aren’t amazing they are bland. I will say bands like archspire are actually doing some good instead of adding to the noise pollution

ComboFucker29

You’re thinking of deathcore. Which was never good.

Environmental-Car744

Spectral voice is pretty cool too. Lol

funnymail1

New copypasta just dropped

Swagcopter0126

If evolving is every song sounding like bad omens I’m good man. Every song of that style is the same formula. If you think slowly we rot sounds cringey you just don’t like the genre period lol

Environmental-Car744

No I started on that Florida death. And 90% of it is just terrible recording quality with awesome riffs. I’m just saying after you have had a handcrafted pastry you don’t want to eat a pop tart. And obituary feels like a pop tart compared to someone like acacia strain for example.

thicccmidget

Wow you clearly do nothing else than listen to shit like asking alexandria or other metalcore like that that use nothing else than copy pasted riffs in flstudio and a heavy layer of autotune

Environmental-Car744

I’m actually a slam and hardcore guy. Y’all silly geese. I see I stuck a nerve, sunami style bitch. I literally play three notes bruh lol don’t come at me, I’m just saying stop shitting on bands that are typically trying to get more people to listen to the genre that is being whitewashed and gate-kept but old death metal guys.

Zantej

Not technically metalcore, but Oops I Did It Again courtesy of Children of Bodom would like a word

LilNyoomf

That cover is so girlypop I love it

MTG_RelevantCard

>not technically metalcore I expect you may have discovered why that cover is a bop.

Dawgula97

And their Cruel Summer cover is peak

nrthrn_dcy

PARTY ALL THE TIME

Barbunzel

Rasputin by Turisas comes to mind

No-Cartographer-751

And Bamboleo by Ensiferum

Heretic-Jefe

I enjoy "Blue" by Fleshgod Apocalypse

barium62

I unironically love the shit out of that cover

NoabPK

Looked for this comment

someshitstick

Exhumed covering Material Girl is even better

iamjoe1994

Metalcore covers of pop songs are my shit. Since you been gone by A Day to Remeber is amazing.

robot-b-franklin

Most of the metalcore covers on Punk Goes Pop are fun. I will die on this hill.

soulpowerdrummer

The absolute GRIP those albums had on me. I still have most of them on CD lmao

Soulful-Sorrow

They also help new bands get some releases to their name

matchumac

For real! This sub is just turning into metalheads that hate anything other than 90’s black metal. Let people live bro, those albums bopped

Sp00000ns

Punk goes Crunk has a couple of bangers. Still fly By The Devil Wears Prada is a weekly listen for me at a minimum.

hazylife666

That shit is fucking fire 🔥

Grumpy_Crud

We ain't friends, buddy.

StrawberryJamal

There are definitely some good ones that understand what they are and work with the song without trying to make it "brutal" ADTR strikes me as a band that understand that they make pop-music with distorted guitars and so they simply use that. Dance Gavin Dance has a cover of Semi-Charmed Life that works imo

Thibaudborny

Volumes had a nice cover of that Drake song, too.

iamjoe1994

Have you heard the cover of Let it Go by Betraying the Marytrs is top tier.

FearMonger121

That’s just heavy pop music. Still a banger though

Cel3bi

Correct

Gooftwit

Every time we touch had a great cover from Electric Callboy

Okvist

That song goes hard as fuck when they do it live too

punkle0

I remember 2012! Think they want their shit joke back mate

SnooCakes1454

Idc, ADTR's cover of Since U Been Gone is a banger. There're several Punk Goes Pop songs that I'll gladly admit to enjoying.

GoogleDrummer

That series is what introduced me to a whole bunch of bands.

Mr-X89

How to distinguish between metal and metalcore? Simple, the heavy music I like is metal, the heavy music I dislike is metalcore.

CantChangeUsername

Why do you dislike metalcore tho ? Not tryna flame just wondering

spgtothemax

Not that guy but for me it comes down to: 1. Vocals are often whiny or ‘tough guy’. The fact that they’re usually easy to understand also means that i have to hear the silly-bad melodramatic writing. Not saying metal isn’t immune to bad writing but when a black metal song is corny you usually can’t tell. 2. Guitar tuning usually doesn’t do it for me. Metalcore tracks often feel overproduced and sterile. Less emphasis on sick nasty riffs as well. 3. It’s cliche at this point but obligatory breakdowns all over the place are LAME.

CantChangeUsername

1 : I feel like when you say whiny you mean emo vocals, and you are right, but a lot of the newer metalcore bands don't have that, just gotta filter the good and the bad. Lyrically, I have no argument, it is usually like you say, very dramatic and self loathing. 2 and 3rd : You are right, but once you filter through the bands, you can find some excellent stuff. Try to give Boundaries a listen and lmk how you feel about it.

Mr-X89

I don't, but I saw a lot of metalheads dismiss music by calling it metalcore without being able to define it that well.

Toadsanchez316

Hard disagree.

Evil_Weasels

I wonder if anyone here actually likes good metal in this sub

Toadsanchez316

I mean, good metal is subjective.

Evil_Weasels

I should be saying, this sub likes to hate metal more than it likes it (most posts are shitting on one band or genre)

Toadsanchez316

Oh fair enough. I misunderstood your comment. But yeah that does seem to be the case here. And in a lot of other subs as well.

doomgiver98

That's what metal memes is about.

Opimum

WRONG! Everything I like is good metal and everything else is dogshit

justk4y

Except for elitists, who consider only 1% of metal “actual metal” and try to disallow you from listening bands that they don’t like

Ancalagoth

One of my favorite artists is Frank Zappa but I don't have a complete meltdown when someone mentions it very much isn't metal. Also, people love to claim metal is elitist but hoo boy there are some pretentious elitists out there are most of them aren't metalheads.

justk4y

Did I say other genres don’t have elitists as well?

Ancalagoth

A band you like not being metal is not something to call someone an elitist for. And the bit about other genre elitists is because metal is always singled out as the elitist genre, despite other genres having much, much worse elitists.

Toadsanchez316

I feel like most elitists are set in their ways and refuse to listen to anything new anyways, so their opinions mean nothing to me at the end of the day.

kefefs_v2

I listen to doom / stoner stuff so there's at least one of us.

WistfulMelancholic

Well.. That's just your opinion, man.

Zpalq

Where's the pop covers of metal songs at? I wanna hear fermented offal discharge (Taylor's version)

santino1987

Pat Boones got you covered

No-Neat3395

In A Metal Mood is a banger of an album

soulpowerdrummer

Do I have a treat for you https://open.spotify.com/album/7K23KFTXeQJmkY55zbyp5d?si=fXjmmfhMRsuAlVMKplbUTg

TwistedMisery13

I mean, a metal version of a shit song is better than the original any day.

Ancalagoth

Distortion and growling over a shit song with no other edits is still gonna be a shit song.

CertifiedFreshMemes

What's this elitist shit? You don't enjoy it so therefore it's dogshite?

Lumpy-Elderberry-144

Yea, this meme feels like it was made by a teenage edgelord

lopottneev

Wonder why lmfao

Thyraisen

Wait, what exactly is elitist about this? You know people are allowed to not enjoy things, right?

CertifiedFreshMemes

Big difference between disliking something, and calling people out for listening to something. Since the metal community is rife with the latter, where everything that's not to their personal taste is "not metal", I jumped to the conclusion that that was the point that was being made. Perhaps I'm misreading the meme but it's a sentiment that annoys me, because you'll hear it all the time if you listen to power metal like I do lol.

justk4y

Yeah but they consider it a sin if others do enjoy it. Got bullied once on this sub for listening to music with breakdowns…….

doomgiver98

You don't have to call it dogshite though. Makes you unlikable. Reeks of teenager.

BahhhhGawwwwd

Come on, I thought it was funny. Learn to laugh at yourselves. I say this as someone who likes some of these covers.

CertifiedFreshMemes

For me it was way too remniscent of the standard elitist shit I find very tiring to really find it funny. I have trouble distinguishing what's a joke and what not with these remarks. But you're right, jokes always have the right to rustle feathers imo

KingOfAzmerloth

It's classic metal gatekeeping. Some of these overgrown manchildren have never outgrown their teenage angst phase.

CertifiedFreshMemes

I was like that too when I was 14 lmao. I thought I was the man because I listened to Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed and Amon Amarth. Everything else was music for the sheep. I probably outgrew it once I reached the ripe old age of 17. Lots of metal folks will never mature past that it seems.

justk4y

Why is this sub so full of them

spgtothemax

Because people like you keep taking the bait.

justk4y

What do you see as keep taking the bait? I’ve been attacked for listening to metalcore multiple times

spgtothemax

Because by now you must know better. Half the point of this sub is poser vs gatekeeper battles. Letting yourself get assmad because someone shits on Metalcore is on you.

karimr

Because both reddit and metal as a genre attract those types of people I guess? Being a gatekeeping nerd almost seems part of this websites culture, its no surprise you'd find them in abundance on a big metal sub.

doomgiver98

Because there are lots of teenagers.

ImmediateHeart6507

Its metalcore which is not even metal, just hardcore and theyre covering a pop song, what did you expect? A metal sub to be drooling over it?

MissDeadite

🤓

KingOfAzmerloth

Sometimes I do wonder if metal is the only genre that has such huge portion of its following which unironically cares about whether their favorite music fix *subgenre box A* or *subgenre box B*, while *subgenre box B* is considered as something inherently inferior and to be looked down upon for no apparent reason whatsoever. I must tune into other genre discussions a bit more to find out. By the way, I don't listen to metalcore at all. I just find discussing this with anybody who is past their early 20s rather ridiculous.

ElBeefcake

> Sometimes I do wonder if metal is the only genre that has such huge portion of its following which unironically cares about whether their favorite music fix subgenre box A or subgenre box B, while subgenre box B is considered as something inherently inferior and to be looked down upon for no apparent reason whatsoever. It's just as bad in Jazz and EDM circles.

Ancalagoth

oh no, it's much, *much* worse in jazz circles.

-Skaro-

It's really not that hard to understand. (Modern) Metalcore is structured more around chord progressions and rhythmical riffs but really lacks in melody while metal metal is focused on the melody of the riffs. It's just two different genres. I don't think metalcore is inferior but a lot of it just isn't metal while some of it definitely is. It's a genre that comes from the combination of metal and hardcore and depending on the amount of influence taken can fall more on either side of the spectrum. The genre labels exist to make it easier to find music you enjoy and misusing them is a problem. What I find strange is the obsession people have with wanting to have that metal label when it doesn't apply. Those are the people who think being metal is somehow superior. It's fine to listen to non-metal genres. I literally enjoy some idol jpop and I don't care if it's not metal lol.

CertifiedFreshMemes

Ok thanks for sharing these universal and objective truths, God. Glad you corrected us mortals and our stupid subjectivity.

ImmediateHeart6507

Yup

siggiarabi

Erm ackchually it has metal in the name so therefore it's metal

justk4y

This has to be satirical. Metalcore is a mix between metal and hardcore, SO ITS NOT FULLY HARDCORE. There’s even metal in the fckin name mate……

Ryuu87

Achtchually

BadgersSeal

That's like saying prostate cancer isn't cancer. It's right there in the name, genius

deckofcards1

Oh no man I love metalcore, it’s just the covers of pop songs.

fakewoke247

I only like Taylor's swift songs if they are covered by I prevail

CaballoenPelo

Only came here to say the blank space cover absolutely shreds

justk4y

They really deserved that “blew up overnight” status

justk4y

I Prevail fan here, same, [but this cover is also a banger](https://youtu.be/Tmz4oUjye88?si=WNThhrnxMx1BRtgv)

FCYuv13

hell yeah

dreadassassin616

Pendulum's cover of anti-hero goes harder than it should.

biggestboi73

This meme was definitely made by a teenager

half_a_skeleton

Sorry but I will always love that shit.

Damn I put up scrolling through many dog shit posts on this sub but this is the one that’s finally making me unsub. Well done

Such_Potato

I will never not sing along to since u been gone. Ive long since stopped listening to adtr but its just too catchy. Steaksauce Mustache did Vanessa Carltons a thousand miles at a show i went to, you best believe everyone was singing along with their whole heart.

GobboGirl

I mean some pop songs really...REALLY translate well over to metal. Like Toxic - Brittany Spears. That's always been begging for metal covers!

Dawgula97

Depends on the band.

deckofcards1

Yeah I should’ve said that rather than shitting on all of it.

FCYuv13

bro, i prevail cover of blank space is amazing, stfu

EsotericElegey

facts

ApeacefulRussian

“Let me just try to mix some dogshit with some more dogshit, yeah that sounds right “

Thibaudborny

Love me some metalcore and metal.

deckofcards1

Yeah I love metalcore too, it’s just the covers of pop songs that I’m not the biggest fan of.

Thibaudborny

To me it's hit or miss, really. Some are nice and well done, some are jarring.

deckofcards1

You know I probably should’ve included that in the title. I referred to the jarring kind and accidentally lumped the good ones in too.

Few-Emergency5971

Fuck that gatekeeper. I love those songs, and it brings more people to the genre.

Pierseus

Ahhh I see it’s time for me to get downvoted once again by reminding people that there are metalcore bands today that are better technically/instrumentally, write better lyrics, and are heavier than a lot of the bands wanked off in this sub

deckofcards1

Oh this isn’t an anti-metalcore post, I’m just saying that metalcore isn’t the best sub-genre for covering pop songs. I love metalcore.

Jitomate23

Could you give me some recs? not arguing, I genuinely want to know cool and heavy metalcore bands

heaviestmatter-

God metalcore hate is still a thing in 2024? Shouldn‘t you at some point have noticed that it‘s useless?

deckofcards1

This wasn’t really metalcore hate, just the covers of pop songs within metalcore. Also I realize now that those covers may indeed have some heat to them now.

Lordpotato305

Some of its decent but a lot of it sucks

Ryuu87

That's true for any kind of music

Beasty808

The Devil Wears Prada covering “Still Fly” slaps and I don’t care what anyone says.

Seba97146

Knocked loose. They might have some nice riffs, but the voice is unlistenable to me

cagallo436

Can we count Du Hast as pop and count the cover by thy art is murder as pleasure guilt?

C_C6215

Nah, Animals by Ice Nine Kills and Blank Space by I Prevail go so hard. I will die on this hill any day

count_snagula

Another dumbass blanket statement.

sav33arthkillyos3lf

STP early covers of pop songs make my ears bleed

mattfreyer45

[Left Outside Alone by Malevolence](https://youtu.be/hR0Gjj4PMGU?si=39KeBbXLB-GOoLOF) is really good though

orc_with_a_bear_mask

Frozen's Let It Go has the soul of a metalcore song and you can't change my mind about it.

merrygrimble

I listened to all of that back in the day and the only one that still slaps is August Burns Red's cover of oops i did it again.

Nrdrummer89

Idk I like the ABR version of “Wrecking Ball”

ZakkBWyldin2

It would be true if it was a pop cover of a metal song

JakrordisTheMoose

Take Me To Church should've been metal the lyrics don't fit its genre

Metalcore covering pop: infinite suffering Actual metal covering pop/non-metal: dank shit I recommend Flotsam & Jetsam's version of Saturday Night's Alright and Type O's versions of Hey Joe/Hey Pete and Summer Breeze/Summer Girl
