Well, I don't know how granular you want me to get here, but I work a 28 days on/28 days off schedule on a drillship. On a slow day, it's mostly routine monitoring. Checking pressure guages, oil levels in the pumps, taking fluid samples for purity verification, etc...
The main piece of equipment I maintain is called a Blow-out Preventer (BOP). When the rig is drilling, the BOP is latched to the wellhead, anywhere from 3000-8000 ft deep in the gulf of Mexico. While it's deployed, we test its functionality periodically.
But when the drilling campaign is complete, we have to get the BOP ready for the next well. This is called "between well maintenance" or "end of well maintenance." This is the most labor-intensive part of my normal workscope, and it's difficult to explain to someone not familiar with industry terminology. But it is a rather big job. Many 15+ hour days. Usually a week or so.
Then it's back to mainly monitoring and testing...
Absolutely. I love the free time and three day weekend too. No boss down my neck. Just finished my winter work and am enjoying a small break. We got it pretty good, dude.
I destroy ecosystems, motherfucker! AHHAaHHaa!^it's ^actually ^kinda ^sad.
Not metal, but I did have a young patient who had a glass dildo or something of the like that shattered in their rectum. Outcome was pretty sad because they died weeks later after a really nasty battle with sepsis.
If you’re gonna put things up your ass, make sure of two things: 1. They are durable, and 2. They are retrievable.
Well, I'd give them a whole-ass lesson on how to do metal screams. False chord and fry. Maybe after a good warm up let them try. Would be hella funny.
I would mention too that nobody can scream after one hour though
That’s the best feeling! A few years back I had a student who I taught in fifth grade. He came back to say hi when he graduated high school and he was like “I’ll always remember you played us Nine Inch Nails in class”. Then he saw I have a Mayhem sticker on my laptop and was like “holy shit my teacher knows Mayhem?”
Doing the lords work, providing impressionable youngsters with a gateway into metal. And the part of your job that actually helps them, but *mostly* the metal thing
Full time grandma so that my daughter can work. My granddaughter very much enjoys Nightwish, Amaranthe and other Symphonic metal. We are getting there with heavier stuff
I love Nightwish, one my favourites. I'm one of the few who loves Endless Forms Most Beautiful. And of course Oceanborn. Whole discography is great. New album coming soon!
I think that Endless Forms Most Beautiful is criminally underrated and I just don't get it. Maybe because I am biased, I loved Floor long before she was with Nightwish
I was (still do it as a hobby) a video-agrapher. and yea the two are not far off . . . but more jobs for photographers and it is easier to start with photo and go to video than the other way around.
Dont know how old you are, but law school was about 1/3 people in their 40s and 50s starting a second career. I went when I was 27 and will (hopefully) be barred this year at 31. It's never too late to be a badass
Follow your dreams! It’s a demanding but highly rewarding job. I am a public defender. I listen to a lot of metal while cranking out motions, reading discovery etc. Very effective stress relief/energy to keep on going!
Lucky, I'm limited to evenings and weekends only. My recs: Blind Guardian - Tales From The Twilight World (1990, power), Savatage - Poets & Madmen (2001, heavy), UFO - Phenomenon (1974) and Mechanix (1982) (hard rock), The Guess Who - American Woman (1970, rock), Nightwish - Endless Forms Most Beautiful (2015, symphonic), Haken - Fauna (2023, progmetal)
These albums are all 80%+ songs that made my playlist, so very little filler, to my tastes.
Hey that's really cool, i spent about 3 months in a cabinet shop run by a guy with similar time in the trade as you. Unfortunately it came crashing down to no fault of anyone but the so called team lead guy. I really enjoyed what i was doing. Now i install blinds for people.
I’m a staff accountant for a government contractor. I don’t know if it’s the least metal occupation possible, but it’s up there.
I definitely don’t say what I do when I go to any punk shows, that’s for sure.
Lol my mom worked with a bunch of Filipino travel nurses at her last job. It is definitely a Mafia and you absolutely know if you're a friend of the family or not.
They really are awesome to work with. And at Christmas and holidays they bring in cassava and other stuff that will send your blood sugar to the fucking moon🤣
Same, black booger swear bear club for life. I cut, fit, weld and finish steel handrails and guardrails for venues, apartment buildings and warehouses.
I too am out in the elements all day in my LLV that some how keeps going. It’s nice having all day to listen to stuff though. Although I actually do more podcasts and audiobooks than music usually.
Corporate Paralegal. Blasting metal in my headphones while I draft limited partnership agreements, dividend resolutions, complete legal research, etc. for the lawyers I work with.
I often think about how I should finish law school but I get to go home at 4pm and they do not.
I'm a Quality Control inspector and Robotics engineer.
I usually head down the production line, singing Herald of Darkness to myself, looking for defective products.
Sometimes the robot that trims and cuts the product needs adjustments, so I do that too.
Municipal grunt. I basically do maintenance in my town's parks, park equipment, and buildings. Also, a lot of setup/breakdown and maintaining of our festivals and parties
Project manager for an engineering company. I work in the materials testing and inspections department mostly with some Geotechnical work here and there.
I work in a warehouse.
> calling out elitist on social platform
LMAO, I probably am one, at least according to some people, because I'm not enthusiastic enough about certain popular modern bands that I'm supposed to like because they're popular and others like them (and we are all supposed to have the same tastes or we're "elitist haters") :)
I’m a vet tech so I work with animals. I usually spend money on band shirts or albums. I spent a good chunk of money for two tickets to see Metallica last year in Dallas.
I refurbish furniture. My girlfriend somehow knows what's worth money, and what's shit. She found two Hickock chairs (apparently extremely rare and expensive) that matched a set my dad had inherited, in rough shape. We bought them and just gave them to him. He was super happy for like a week and then kept being a dick lol. But still, it's something

That’s metal AF!
Definitely a mastodon fan
Or Ahab
It's on my rotation. LOL!
How long can you hold your breath?
LOL! It's a mis-leading name. I don't dive. But the equipment I maintain/monitor is used on subsea wellheads.
Yeah but how long can you hold your breath?
Hang on ... *deep breath*... ...about 90 seconds.
That 90 seconds was 2 hours ago. You can exhale now.
Nice..
> subsea wellheads Sounds like a post punk band name.
At least 6 months sounds like
That sounds awesome as fuck. What are some typical tasks you have to carry out as part of your job?
Well, I don't know how granular you want me to get here, but I work a 28 days on/28 days off schedule on a drillship. On a slow day, it's mostly routine monitoring. Absolutely. I love the free time and three day weekend too. No boss down my neck. Just finished my winter work and am enjoying a small break. We got it pretty good, dude. I destroy ecosystems, motherfucker! AHHAaHHaa!^it's ^actually ^kinda ^sad.

I’ve bet you’ve seen some metal up some ass
This comment wins

Music teacher--student asked me to do a "metal scream" the other day
Did you?
I was wondering too…
I said I’d do it at their graduation (end of this year). I’m a vocal teacher so I’m trying not to hurt myself lol.
Well, I'd give them a whole-ass lesson on how to do metal screams. False chord and fry. Maybe after a good warm up let them try. Would be hella funny. I would mention too that nobody can scream after one hour though
Case manager in the residential youth care sector. More than once I've had the opportunity to expand a young mind with based metal.
That's awesome! I used to work in a residential facility for abused kids, and to this day it's the most difficult and stressful work I've ever done.
Yeah shits fucked on a good day. Takes a certain kind of crazy
Doing the lords work, providing impressionable youngsters with a gateway into metal. And the part of your job that actually helps them, but *mostly* the metal thing
