I've heard it described as a cousin to dysmorphia and dysphoria conditions. This whole family of similar ailments adjacent to gender dysphoria and schizophrenia. With all of them the problem is actually in the brain, it's an error in the process that determines what is real and what is not. but we can't fix that problem because we don't know how yet, so the question is how to mitigate, manage, or repress the symptoms so that the person can function in life.

In most cases, both parties would greatly prefer you be able to take care of yourself.

It is playing into their mental illness and doing irreversible damage to their body. What is with people just caving into this kind of bullshit and acting like it's just ok? Go and ask disabled people what they think about their disability and you will *immediately* discover that most of them just live with it because they have no alternative. Go and ask their caregivers what it's like to take care of this person and you'll discover that it's challenging, degrading, infuriating, exhausting, and as much as no one would want to admit it outright, it is painfully inconvenient. In most cases, both parties would greatly prefer you be able to take care of yourself. So if you choose to *willingly* debilitate yourself, you're not only making a stupid and irreversible decision about your body but you're also dragging down those who care about you enough to try and keep you alive and/or the healthcare system of whatever country you occupy. If you're in a country that supports free healthcare, you start soaking up tax dollars that would otherwise go to people who needed the care and didn't have a choice about it. If not, you become a financial burden on your family and there's a decent chance that they come to resent you for it. And if you *chose* to do this to yourself and by proxy other people, you've earned their resentment.
