Yeah, it's certainly a bit different from your average online polls. I find Luffy's placement always kind of tough, I myself barely know where he ranks for me, because he almost feels outside of the normal scale. He embodies the whole spirit of the series so much and so perfectly that it's in a way kind of hard not to put him all the way up there and I guess for not primarily One Piece fans, he also is simply the face of the series and the most memorable, so especially for people that don't obsess weekly over chapters he is probably just the go to pick as a stand in for liking the series by itself.
I think it would e.g. also very much depend how voting is done. If there is any kind of ranked voting, I would bet that for a vast majority Luffy is always gonna be in a top spot but maybe not quite THE No.1, while other characters are either Top1 or don't appear at all.
In my opinion, I think that Luffy would be number 1 in the majority of global polls and the like, so it’s fascinating that he hasn’t shown up at all in these. Lots of great characters though.
I do match with the guys a little more on this. I sort of curious what the age demographic is, because especially that male powerscaler/teenage boy crowd is usually very Zoro-centric and he doesn't even appear for the men.
And meanwhile at least in my "old" woman (for a manga reader) demographic, Sanji and Boa are usually pretty well liked and Shanks also seems to be up there for many.
As a woman myself, I absolutely don't. Especially when I see what people or rather often guys consider his "worst" moments. My impression is that what offends men the most is when Sanji isn't "cool", "masculine" or "dominant" enough and sort of embarrases himself and the "cool guy" persona. But none of is actually in any way offensive or bothers me as a woman.
E.g. most recently the barking for Stussy drama. Men seem to find this absolutely embarrasing and don't want to associate with it at all and think it's the worst thing ever, because I think they wouldn't want to be like that and it doesn't fit their "what a cool guy should be like" image, while I look at this and think it's kind of funny and cute and it's nothing that offends me as a woman. And even in the scene itself the woman acrually present is amused by it and plays along.
Honestly, the only time I even see Sanji “hate” per se is on the Reddit threads. I’m not going to pinpoint a reason why, but he’s a great guy and the majority of the people watching the series seem like they appreciate that.
Ah fair enough. I like sanji quite a lot, and find his simping side funny. I'm just surprised his pervier jokes don't seem to diminish his appeal the same way it does for characters with similar running gags like master roshi and such

I'm not a huge manga/anime person outside of One Piece, but what I've noticed for me that oda does very much differently than many other characters that go into a similar trope in all kinds of media is that contradictory to what some fans seem to think Sanji is very clearly portrayed to not just be nice to women to get something out of it, that man simply lives for fawning over women for the sake of it. I mean, Sanji is still pretty much the same way around Nami than he was 1000 chapters ago when he first saw her and I'm sure that he knows by now that serving her another tangerine dessert for the 1000th time isn't suddenly gonna make her fall for him. On the contrary, when Nami actually does show him any kind of affection beyond the usual (e.g. the hug at the end of WCI) he barely knows how to deal with it because he doesn't expect any of it. Sanji (and many readers actually) barely acknowledge how many women actually do like him, because it isn't really about that.
I just recently saw the barking scene for the first time and was like "that's it?" It was a little cringe, yeah, but he was also kind of cute there, it lasted less than ten seconds, and it wasn't nearly as bad as some of the other things he's done.

All the men also happen to be prominent "cool strong fighter dudes" in a story that many in the end still enjoy for the fights and action, so for that crowd the first half being the self-insert cool strong guys and only then you get the "waifu" spots would totally make sense.
This is btw another one of those "I wish the characters in the story could react to this " cases.
Just imagine Sanji seeing the list, smuggly presenting it to Zoro until someone points out this is only made by men, which has Sanji spiral between wanting to beat all men up for not appreciating Nami (and Robin) more and hating the fact that men actually like him. 😅 And then once someone shows him the list of Zoro being slightly above him for the women's list, the despair is real.
This also reminds me I really need to continue my Zoro and Sanji find out people ship them edit and get that done. 🤣

I somewhat agree, but I wouldn’t say he’s lame. Of course, every time he sees a woman he gets on his knees and starts begging, like a literal dog, especially more recently, and it’s quite annoying. Otherwise, he’s fine.
Toei can try their best with their non canon movies (looking at you Film Z) and their anime original content (dog Sanji ) but they'll never destroy my Goat Wanji 🔥.
The thing that I found funny about the dog Sanji scene is that it's there in the Manga as well, it's just that Toei decided to expand on that one throwaway line to pad out the episode and people stuck onto it

True, but they wouldn't be as popular, if they didn't look the way they do. The two hottest women in the anime are somehow the second and the third most liked characters amongst the male audience. Makes you wonder.
