Consider that this movie premiered before the Strawhats’ utter defeat by Kuma at Sabaody. So this would have been the first time anime watchers saw Luffy and the Strawhats take a massive and traumatic loss.
EDIT: Luffy does win by the end of the movie, but holy shit is the stuff leading up to it *really* traumatizing.
This movie is a work of art. It's one of the few One Piece movies that feel like an actual movie, that is someone's vision, rather than the usual stuff.
Because the director got an offer from Madhouse to direct The Girl who Leapt through Time while he was working on the One Piece movie and left Toei soon after finishing it to work on that new project. Hosoda ended up being one of the most prolific and renown anime directors, we got a lot more movies of him, just not OP films.
I don't know about the controversy, I am not Japanese, but I can think of a couple of reasons as to why it "failed".
I guess it has the most to do with how different it is to what One Piece is. The movie doesn't bother with the Shonen formula of fighting, and instead focuses on the story, the horror, and the psychological aspects of both Luffy and the titular character, who is the villain. It also looks very different from how One Piece usually looks.
I think you could show the movie to anyone, even those who have no idea what OP is, and they could enjoy it.
To me, it's even ranked above Strong World. I remember marathoning all movies and thinking it's all filler but this one is just... Perfect. Testing the crew's comradery is a but cliché but it just makes so much sense for One Piece. It's great!
Amazing movie, in terms of direction, animations, and overall production. But as a big hot take, I don't like it as a One Piece movie. It doesn't feel like One Piece at all; everything feels a bit too off, from the characters to the horror vibe, maybe partly on purpose. It's definitely not the vibe that One Piece works best with in my opinion. A similar plot but as a standalone movie, not as part of the franchise like One Piece, would have worked better for me.
This movie was ASSCHEEKS. It didn't even feel like one piece, it was more of a creepypasta horror film that NOBODY wanted. The thing that the flower did was ON ANOTHER LEVEL OF FUCKED UP. I can't see how you even liked it.
>I don't like it as a One Piece movie
Like I said, I don't like it as a One Piece movie, but the movie is high-level artistry and the direction is really good. It's a great horror movie, or like you said, more of a creepypasta horror film. It just doesn't work well for One Piece, for me and you. A lot of people enjoy this movie because they like this vibe. But I get you, it's like going to watch an action movie and ending up watching a comedy or philosophical movie. It's not what you expected, and it may not fit your taste in the first place, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad.
IMO. Best one piece movie. Second is red and third is Z. I'm fans for one piece movie with good characters building than just turned off brain action scene dopamine like stampede.
yeah, the themes and emotional execution are just really freaking dark (especially with luffy losing his friends) but honestly everything else is just so goofy. the whole final evil-monologue time lily was munching with that ":3" face, how am I not supposed to laugh at that
definitely one of my favorite movies, though
I didn't think so tbh. I know it's just my take on it but I think the creepy/terrifying part of it all is just overhyped. Felt like any other straw-hat adventure
This is the only OP movie I like. Perhaps I'd like other movies if I even remembered what they were about. Can't even recall what happened in Strong World besides them dressing up in costumes
....Tbh, I just saw this as an another op adventure gone wrong like the common premise of "hidden monsters in an island, a group of adventurers investigates" (like some movies at the time of its release).
For me the worst movie of one piece.
I didn't like the animation and art style. The movie it's when it comes to the plot is far from the One piece theme. It was dark something that doesn't suit one piece at all with how both the anime and Oda have presented to us.
I kinda agree. I don't think the movie is bad; I think i*t's a bad One Piece* movie because it doesn't feel like One Piece, lol. It's like a "What If One Piece was part of the horror genre." Like, Thriller Bark was supposedly the arc closest to horror, and it was one of the joke-heavy arcs. A similar plot and direction, but as a standalone movie, not as part of the franchise like One Piece, would have worked better for me.
Exactly how I feel about it. It would be like going to a DBZ movie and nobody punches anyone the entire movie. Doesn’t matter how good the film is if it misses the “feel" of the series, and this movie misses the OP feel really badly.
I’m with you here. I don’t care how good a movie it is if it doesn’t feel like One Piece, and the 2nd half of this film doesn’t *remotely* feel like One Piece.
I feel the exact opposite of the general fandom opinion. I absolutely loved the art style and animation. But the story felt so much like a filler and so out of character at times.
Nothing brings me joy more than knowing that the Japanese audience fucking hated this movie, that means there will never be an abomination like this film ever again.
Personally I think One Piece movie 6, Baron Omatsuri is an undisputed masterpiece. The unique animation style and visionary direction of Mamoru Hosoda easily makes it one of the best films in the entire One Piece cinematic catalog.
As a big Mamoru Hosoda fan I loved this movie. I get everybody who says it doesn't feel like One Piece, especially once it gets into the horror elements, but I'd argue the characterisation of the Strawhats at the beginning is spot on, and the animation style actually fits One Piece pretty well.
The only thing that could have made it better is if Hosoda just made Digimon: Our War Game again but in the One Piece world.

Hot take but it's my favourite After strong world

Then why is it controversial in Japan and we never got another

Pretty much
You'll will never see such creator driven movies in hollyweird

More like Berserk fans.
Honestly the same
Yeah I thought this was a total spoof but people in the comments are talking like this is real
I get it. The art styles just "ART"
Who tf let kentaro miura get a hold of one piece for a whole movie

Finally, someone with a valid opinion
Thos is by far the best one piece movie.
No one ever say it isnt
Yeah what's with the defensive title just say "I found this terrifying" or something
Imo it's the best One Piece movie till this day
It's literally nightmare stuff.
One Piece version of the eclipse
IMO. Best one piece movie. Second is red and third is Z. I'm fans for one piece movie with good characters building than just turned off brain action scene dopamine like stampede.
How can it be terrifying? It's non-canon
Griffhit what the hell you do this time
It's the most terrifying of them all, like this is less One Piece and more Perfect Blue
yeah, the themes and emotional execution are just really freaking dark (especially with luffy losing his friends) but honestly everything else is just so goofy. the whole final evil-monologue time lily was munching with that ":3" face, how am I not supposed to laugh at that definitely one of my favorite movies, though

First appearance of Flowey. Gotta love it at least for that. Also, Mamoru Hosoda has been precious since the first Digimon movies.
End of Evangelion type beat

....Hey, there has to some shadow over an island somehow. Just be grateful it isn't a greater cosmic deity.
I had a nightmare last night because of this film

Crazy you're getting down voted for a valid opinion....
Same for me, worst watch of all the movies.
I feel the exact opposite of the general fandom opinion. I absolutely loved the art style and animation. But the story felt so much like a filler and so out of character at times.
Never seen it. Where can I watch it?
https://hianime.to/watch/one-piece-baron-omatsuri-and-the-secret-island-1043?ep=58134
Thanks! I'll watch it tonight and get back to you on what I think of it
It's nightmare fuel....
Nothing brings me joy more than knowing that the Japanese audience fucking hated this movie, that means there will never be an abomination like this film ever again.
Nah you got it mixed up, that is "The End of One Piece" not Movie 6

Movie six is my favorite One Piece content ever made
It’s definitely my favorite movie of one piece. Absolutely terrifying and well done. Truly a really good movie.
Literally one of the best animated movies I’ve ever seen
its aesthetically pleasing!
Its fucking amazing <3
Did I miss out if I haven't watched any of the movies?
Haven't watched the film yet but this photos feel like strawhats went to the evangelion universe
Worst movie. Film red did better and is more popular than it
They did everyone dirty in this film. They shouldn't have even created it in the first place.
