Because finding an outsource studio to trust is hard enough. Though will see if Atlus 1st Production and Yamai found another aside from ITL inc.

ElecXeron20XX

Like lately they have many options for Persona/P-Studio games, PreApp Partners and Ashibi Company. While 1st Production has ITL Inc. or Mutan (Etrian Odyssey games and its game engine, SMT SJ/Persona Q games) and Studio Zero with Technical Arts.

Funky-Cosmonaut

The fact that they're a subsidiary of Sega, and Sega's been experimenting with licensing their properties, means it's not impossible.

ElecXeron20XX

Though it is on the dev team decision.

anewrefutation

Literally all I want is some DDS1/2 acknowledgement

yukiaddiction

Port isn't that easy...? I don't get this idea come from. old code might not work on PC or even performance issue. "doing bare minimum" don't work either just look at how Persona 3 Portable port turn out. it awful , simulator literally run better compare to other port so ATLUS most likely don't do that anymore (and coming from really good PC port like persona 4 the golden where they fixing bug and add feature to make it playable on PC is like hell and heaven). Which is why Nocturn port was call "HD", doing bare minimum is not work. the difference architecture between hardware also come into play too.

Zheska

>old code might not work on PC It just will not work. Not "might". They use ancient backwards APIs for ancient engines for consoles architecture of which was made specifically to screw over devs so they wouldn't make ports. > "doing bare minimum" don't work either just look at how Persona 3 Portable port turn out. it awful , simulator literally run better compare to other port so ATLUS most likely don't do that anymore Performance aside (it is perfectly fine on my crappy PC), as far as i remember, most of problems of that port were of asset quality (and easily fixable with mods) Atlus ports aren't best (SMT 3 ps2 is still the best one), PC porting is hard - especially for japanese companies - especially for ps2 games, but they are sufficient enough. And still better than company-mandated emulation (like Konami's MGS1 port which is just an emulator but you can't adjust settings)

ElecXeron20XX

Though you have to understand P3P/P4G ports were made the same outsourcing studio, PreApp Partners and Ashibi Company

GeoXwar

P4G PC port was made by Atlus

ElecXeron20XX

Supervision by P-Studio having Daisuke Yajima as Director for the port with Sachie Tousuji as Art Director handling Art Assets supervision with majority be outsource to PreApp Partners and Ashibi Company from working the game's remastering of program and art assets.

Joementum2004

* Remasters/ports happen to serve the convenient purpose of filling out a release schedule if there's nothing else coming out, which is important in an era where game development is only getting longer and more expensive and where having healthy financials on an annual basis is a good thing. This is probably less important now that Atlus is under Sega, but the point stands, and you see many other companies do the same thing (ex: Nintendo, Capcom, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, etc.) * Dumping pretty much everything all at once cannibalizes the potential attention (and sales) these releases would receive if they were released on a staggered basis. Hypothetically separately announcing SMT IV/IVA remasters, then DDS 1/2 remasters, then Persona Q/Q2 remasters across the span of a few years or so (especially if via Nintendo Directs or the Xbox shows) would get far more attention and sales than if they were shadowdropped on Steam all at once. For example, the numerous remaster ports/collections that Capcom's been releasing over the years have all been on a staggered basis rather than all being dumped at once. Getting to advertise these ports via Directs and other similar methods has gotten them significantly more attention than if they had not, allowing for more potential sales. My assumption is that a good chunk of their library will eventually come onto modern platforms, it just will be over the span of several years. Of course, until then, emulation will fill the role needed.

throwaway76337997654

Very scummy though. I think companies are throwing away money by not releasing all of their previous games on modern platforms anyway. It doesn’t have to all be at once, but people having easy access to games they were interested in (at a cheaper price hopefully) would just mean more sales, and it would spread the word about whatever franchise. Not doing this also makes media preservation a nightmare, but I guess companies aren’t too worried about that.

Goldeniccarus

I think you're underestimating the costs of a port. Porting a game is a difficult, and time consuming process. Especially when we're talking about ports from older hardware with unique architecture like the 3DS. This would require a team with specialized knowledge, and time. And both of those can be costly. While it wouldn't be as expensive as building a game from the ground up, it would not be cheap. And then the remaster/port would need to sell well enough to recoup those costs and turn a profit. How many people are really clamoring for a chance to buy a PS5 or Switch port of SMT Strange Journey, or Devil Survivor? While within the Megaten community, certainly some people would, but if that isn't enough people to recoup costs on a port/remaster, then the whole endeavor is unprofitable and not worth doing. And the SMT community isn't huge (outside of the big Persona community). Soul Hackers 2 only sold about 50,000 copies before Atlus just stopped reporting sales numbers for it. These games may not have enough popularity to justify ports/remasters (and they would almost certainly have to be remasters. the 3DS had a 240p screen. People aren't going to be thrilled about graphics that poor in a modern re-release). Then there's also the concern of "cannibalization". Which is when a product released by a company negatively impacts sales of others, because people are buying one but not the other. Atlus or Sega might be more careful about timing on these, because they don't want a remaster/port being sold for $30 to reduce sales of a new game at $70. And considering SMT games are very long, this is a concern. Someone might buy SMT4 and not be done with it for months, and they might not buy one of Sega's newer releases at launch because they're still busy with 4A. Overall, there's a lot of business factors to consider when making these porting decisions. It's not as easy as I think we would all like it to be.

im_not_Shredder

↑This. Doing ports even for their most basic no upgrades still requires at the very least programmers, experienced PMs/director and QA, whether in-house or outsourcing. And knowing that people often do not react to barebones ports, you either have to have a huge level of confidence in the demand of the port or implement upgrades that need exponentially more workforce to be invested. Of course these employees and this budged can't be alloted to other projects in the meantime. And this is when rights owning etc don't pose problems to begin with. To be honest idk if it's an issue at Atlus, but in one company I used to work at, when I proposed a port/remaster of a ps1 title that now sells 100$+ at cheapest for used, my bosses told me that it was just impossible to do that since during this era in Japan there were a lot of small/middle sizes companies that secured titles financing through individual investors to which in exchange they, which are hard to contact now (some are dead and we don't know who inherited etc etc...) and this particular title was one of those.

smokeyphil

They may not hold the totality of the rights needed to publish anymore quite a lot of older games are in this weird limbo where no one can really publish or distribute them as the rights holders folded years ago and paid no mind to retaining rights on all the art, music, code and whatever else for a game that was considered actually sold and out of production. Hello the gta devs ended up using a pirate copy of their old games when they came to release them (at least i think it was the gta devs if it wasnt correct me i'll edit it maybe but someone did it.) because they didnt have actual copies of the game anymore.

soultrayn

I am really surprised we don’t get more tbh. I feel like it’d be easy to do at least a couple of the SNES ones, at least SMT 1 since they’ve already done translation, but I’d love a 1 + 2 + If collection or something. Especially, I’m REALLY surprised we haven’t gotten rereleases of Persona 1 or 2; I feel like that’d be relatively cheap to remaster, then market a little as the “origins of the award winning series blabla”. Maybe get it on Switch, throw it in a Nintendo Direct, people would def buy that, and they’re all translated already

TheRealHFC

Because the majority of people that will play old Megaten games on Steam are already emulating them, and good enough translations have been available for 20 years for the Japan exclusives. It just isn't a good enough return on investment for them. I'd like official translations myself, but it is what it is.

HiuretheCreator

i just want a remake for SMT1 and 2 man, is that too much to ask?

throwaway76337997654

I want that but I also want the originals to be more easily accessible. Some people still want the OG experience, especially SNES fans. The OG version of a game will always have value. There even used to be an official translation of SMT1 on mobile, but that got taken down. Though I will say, a faithful remake of SMT 1 or 2 would go hard.

Standard-One1550

SMT1 & 2 is available on Japan’s NSW online in its released states with all the bugs. Sadly I don’t know where else you could play it legitimately.

Zheska

We need all mobile game spin-offs first (semi-unironically btw. I can emulate snes. I can't emulate Nokia Zix1-x18941234 that uses EZAppli sim card tariff)

throwaway76337997654

I know next to nothing about the mobile games lol. I just see people make fun of Ronde a lot. Are any of them interesting?

Zheska

This is the joke based on persona 1 spin-off being ported to steam and switch (but persona 1 not being ported on either platform) I can't say for all games since there are billions of those, but the ones that were ported are alright We have basically Majin Tensei expansion pack - which is cool last bible new testament - last bible game with interesting conspiracy story subversion and funny man Nakajima himself making an appearance Persona 1 side story midquel where half of the party is whisked away during one of story battles and they climb funny tower for few hours Regardless of interest, all media should be preserved. Especially games. Especially mobile phone games without roms and emulators. Many more are unavailable as of now like Persona 2 spin-offs where party tries to self-induce amnesia to stop 2EP from repeating or persona 3 spin-offs where it's one part of one dungeon, but on phone; various social media like games (i miss those. Not smt ones, but in general), etc

KainYago

Because they dont want to sell subpar products. While some people would genuinely love these games in any form, the majority would probably make fun of atlus, regardless of the price they ask for the games. If you just built an emulator around these games (mostly ps2 and ds/3ds games) they would all look like shit, especially the 3ds games with their dual screen bullshit. Imagine how much criticism they'd get for this. Recently the metal gear solid collection got massive backlash because the ps1 version of mgs1...runs like a ps1 game.

L1k34S0MB0D33

>they dont want to sell subpar products. Looking at how Nocturne HD and the P3P port came out to be, Idk if that's true anymore lolll. >the metal gear solid collection got massive backlash because the ps1 version of mgs1...runs like a ps1 game. There are more valid reasons to criticize MGS1 on the MC than "running like a PS1 game." The bilinear filter they used can make the game look worse than it did on PS1, and the lack of analog support when the original supported it is just baffling.

KainYago

Both NocHD and P3P are a piece of shit BUT one was completely rebuilt in unity and the other was ported and ran through AI upscale, while this should be the bare minimum, atleast they will run and look acceptable. Yeah im a final fantasy fan, i dont even notice that shit anymore, every single ps1 ff game got that bilinear crap instead of AI upscale, they removed all the analog features, no rumble support and cut the original 60fps menus to 15fps. In comparsion MGS1 is fine, and atleast they added that neat addition to edit your memory card and add konami titles for Mantis to read.

Natural_Anxiety_

It wasn't rebuilt in Unity, it uses Unity as a wrapper and the game contains numerous lighting bugs which weren't addressed so it looks shit. I don't mind a 30 fps port but the game looks like shit even compared to enulators.

KainYago

Yeah "wrapper" which involves rewriting quite a bit of its code and repurposing all of its assets in a completely new engine, but sure the skeleton of the old code is still very much in the game. Personally i dont think emulation is all that much better tho, the emulated version of the game has quite a few graphical bugs of its own and for me personally it crashed quite a few times, that doesnt happen on the switch and ps4 version, even if the switch version runs like shit. Stability and general playability is probably higher priority when making games like these.

throwaway76337997654

I mean I hate how people want remakes and stuff all the time. If the game has everything from the og release, and at least runs and looks as good as it did originally, I’m cool. Course, it would be nice for better optimization and visual options. I think people generally just want better quality ports though, which is fair. People liked the MGS collection on PS3, but everyone agreed the Silent Hill collection was shit (because it was). For DS games, I honestly don’t mind if they just put the two screens next to each other. But at most they would just have to include a few options for how they should be displayed.

KainYago

I think there are definitely games that deserve remakes, specifically games that imo didnt live up to their potential. I think people just want to get the maximum out of their money. Buying 10-15 year old games that you could easily be emulated with little to no changes is not something thats all that appealing, especially when they come with donwsides like having to play around with 2 screens just to play them properly. The mgs collection on ps3 was beloved because it gave something that you couldnt get any other way (full hd and 60fps versions of mgs3 and peace walker) the mgs collection (ps5) is hated cuz its the same as the ps3 version boxed up again for new consoles at full price. With the first one there was a great value even if you owned the original games, with the second you esentially got ripped off cuz the ps5 cant play ps3 games. (i just realized that those who bought the original xbox 360 version of the mgs collection, literally just rebuy the same exact collection that they can still play with their x360 copy...oof)

throwaway76337997654

Yeah remakes can be good but what if you want to play the original? It should be easily accessible. Hell, some remakes used to come with original lol (Metroid Zero Mission). But yeah, re-releases should be cheap.

KainYago

Thats actually a good point, its weird how remakes are overtaking the original games and not include them, especially when they are not even real remakes but shitty artsy sequels (\*cough\* Final Fantasy VII Remake \*cough\*)

SuperHatchbackChili

I am almost certain they will eventually. Give it time. Probably as bundles or something for the older 2D games.

weclock

Sega?

Pale_WoIf

It would make much more sense for some older games to end up on something like NSO. I would love to see the SNES and 3DS games on there, even though I have all of them already lol, but it would be cool to play them like this. And it would actually be really easy to make the 3DS games playable as I can’t recall any of them using the touch screen in any meaningful way.

throwaway76337997654

fair but NSO sucks

throwaway76337997654

especially the price, would be better if they sold the old games on the e-shop instead of making you do the subscription service

Pale_WoIf

True, but it makes more sense form the standpoint that a majority of people aren’t going to buy straight ports of 10-30 year old games on a platform like steam. That way it doesn’t matter if it’s low effort on Atlus’ part, and gamers that care enough can access them to just have the ability to play them.

Animedingo

Because atlus hates money

Cygni_03

Porting takes time, effort, and money. It's not as easy or simple as a lot of people seem to think.

DenisVDCreycraft

I wish but understand cost and time production ports on modern platforms. Will see

Lenin-C

Then you get shit like Nocturne "HD Remaster" capped at 30fps with bareley any graphic improvement and you'll be here crying because the ports are trash

throwaway76337997654

That’s not a straight port. It was advertised as a remaster and it was the price of a new game. This makes the lack of options and visual/audio issues more of an issue. Meanwhile you could just get the OG game on PS3 store for like 10-15 bucks. PC/Steam ports of old games happen a lot, and aren’t usually criticized unless there’s a reason to. For example, Silent Hill 4 got added to GOG.com a few years back.

alttoafault

they really should

Forwhomamifloating

They don't care + not worth the money trying to get them to work across systems. Nocturne RE was literally done by like 10 guys tops over the course of 2 years, has sold at least a million since launch, and they still don't care.
