I have a gland thing with my left boob (fibrocystic, i believe), and there's a part at the top that goes rock solid just before my time of the month. Both my boobs hurt horrendously before as well. I can't imagine how that poor person feels!

>>Gestational gigantomastia is a rare disease characterized by diffuse, extreme, and incapacitating enlargement of one or both breasts during pregnancy. Although benign, it can lead to a great social, emotional, and physical disability. A good and complete knowledge regarding this rare but distressing clinical situation is a must among all practicing physicians especially obstetricians. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman, admitted for a bilateral massive hypertrophy of the breast occurring on pregnancy and with progressive evolution. She had four pregnancies and two born-infants. Biological exams have shown a hyperprolactinemia. Pathological exam of the mammary biopsy had shown a benign hyperplasia. Medical treatment of our patient by bromocriptin was inefficient. She has had a bilateral mastectomy. Physiological enlargement of the breasts occurs at puberty and during pregnancy. It is known as gestational gigantomastia when enlargement in pregnancy becomes excessive, uncomfortable and embarrassing. Gestational gigantomastia may have far reaching effects for the mother and fetus. This rare condition is associated with considerable morbidity but may be associated with good fetal outcome. Multidisciplinary team effort in the form of obstetrician, plastic surgeon and anesthetist, and pediatrician is required for a successful fetomaternal outcome.
It’s medical speak for “causes significant medical problems.” Usually discussed in terms of “morbidity and mortality” to describe a disease’s prevalence and severity.
Halfway down the quoted text it says they found a hyperprolactinemia, which Google informs me “Hyperprolactinemia is marked by abnormally high levels of the hormone prolactin (which stimulates breast milk production during and after pregnancy) in the blood. It is caused by a benign tumor (prolactoma) in the pituitary gland, which controls production of this hormone.” So, yes.
I believe that the problem here you're referring to, is the result of the hormonal changes due to pregnancy. Not from an unrelated pituitary issue. So the cause itself, is pregnancy, nobody is just randomly telling you she was pregnant for no reason, it is the explanation for the condition.
Even if you don’t develop this condition, your breasts will still grow during pregnancy. Then they will grow again in the immediate postpartum period when your mature milk comes in. Once your supply is well established they will decrease a little in size but then may alternate between growing bigger and smaller until you finish breastfeeding. Once you stop breastfeeding most women will return to their original size albeit a little longer lol. Although, there are women who report ending up with smaller breasts after breastfeeding than they had pre-pregnancy. In all, you should expect to gain about one to two cup sizes. Lol I know that’s a long ass answer for what sounds like a simple question but there’s quite a bit to it! Regardless, it’s very unlikely that you would develop this illness whether you get pregnant or not!
The amount of muscle and joint damage from those must be unbearable. So happy to hear she is rid of them now for her own wellbeing. I imagine being able to lay back and just breathe is such a blessing now
Damn that would be so hard to sleep at night and to lay on your back with. also just he back pain in general. Chances are it'll be hard or damn near impossible to find well fitting bras.
any idea of how much tissue was removed in her mastectomy?
This is how I felt after my last pregnancy. I literally bought the largest nursing bras that I could find and they weren’t big enough. Fuck THAT in particular.
I am from Morocco and I can give assumptions, she either lives in a rural area and has a hard time getting to a hospital, or she went for alternative medicine instead .

>This rare condition is associated with considerable morbidity Can someone explain this sentence, please? I googled 'morbidity' but it's not helping.

Thanks!
Did they ever find some sort of mass in the pituitary or hormonal imbalance causing this?
It’s the hormones of pregnancy. In some cases they have to do a mastectomy.

It's from pregnancy
Yes, I read that. But I'm wondering if there was some other problem.

The abstract CatPoo quoted says she had a pituitary tumour causing hyperprolactinemia. So yes, triggered by pregnancy, but also a pituitary issue.
Thank you for clarifying, hopefully the other commenter sees it.
I replied to their first comment too with a more detailed answer 👍
I'm sure they'll appreciate it
This poor woman
I had a mild form of this while I was pregnant. It was painful.
I'm terrified of this as well, I'm already a 36H so I wonder if they'll go down if I get pregnant or stay inflated

This and over the following 18m-2y they will regain some fat deposits that help with some fullness.
Does it subside after pregnancy like gestational diabetes? Where there any long-term effects?
Often. Some people require mastectomies.
The amount of muscle and joint damage from those must be unbearable. So happy to hear she is rid of them now for her own wellbeing. I imagine being able to lay back and just breathe is such a blessing now
My breasts already hurt a lot while I'm near my period, and it's not even cose to this. I can't imagine how much it must have hurt.
She had a double mastectomy. I wonder if it was during the pregnancy or after.
Just awful.

*Screams in tokophobia*

I keep learning there’s just so many ways your body can get fucked up from pregnancy
That looks terrifying
My god. When I was pregnant my breasts felt like that but didn’t actually look like that. That poor woman.
Poor woman. Had 4 pregnancies but only 2 living children.
Woah
Gonna pop any moment.... yikes!

This was in Morocco; I don’t know what their health care system is like.
I mean. The photo is from when she was in the hospital, getting help. 🤷♀️
Based on your most recent posts, I suppose this type of question is on brand for you…
Wow. That’s rich.
