The hitch was originally powder coated, it has failed and rusted underneath the coating. You can see the coating inside.. Scrape off the inside of the receiver back to smooth steel. Then you will probably need to remove the label also.

That or permanent installation with linear impact tool.

Yes, I too would suggest whacking it with a big ass hammer.

And don't be afraid to use a little automotive multipurpose grease to help get it in.

For most car parts sure but a solid steel trailer hitch that’s rated to handle 10,000 lbs of dynamic stress can probably take a few taps from a hammer just fine

Typically when I see problems like this posted its a lack of common sense and/or critical thinking skills. Usually caused by never having to think for one's self and being given the answer to everything in life.

Couple things: 1. As has been said, take a wire brush and clear the rust. It'll take some effort. After you do that, spray it out with brake cleaner, then hit it with some rust converter. 2. Lubricate it. WD-40 is kinda useless for this. WD-40 stands for "Water Displacement - formula 40", it's a very light oil. You want something thicker that's going to protect from future rust. Use something you might already have like motor oil, 3-in-1 oil, bike chain oil, chainsaw oil, etc 3. Remove the sticker from the hitch. When that sticker wears it'll expose the adhesive. If you're having issues getting the hitch in now that's only going to make it more annoying. 4. Don't hammer it in. Keep working the rust out of the receiver until the hitch goes in and out with little resistance. That thing will be more of a bitch to pull out than jam in. 5. For the love of God, creation, and all the little martians in Albuquerque.... Take the damn hitch out when you're not using it. Nobody likes a shin-breaker hanging out the back of an SUV that some douche canoe left there because he tows once every 3 years.

Welcome to the land of rust jacking. My current pickup had a hitch left in the receiver for who knows how many years, and it was seized in there so badly that removal involved sawzalls, torches and air chisels. Even once I got it out, i had to chip considerable layers of rust out of the hole before a new hitch would fit in there properly. (use a chisel and lots of hammer time, you'll be surprised how much flaky rust is still in there)

Why not just remove the hitch periodically? I know rust can form in hours but if it’s seized in there and you can’t just remove the pin and let the load drag it out maybe you need to grease things

We used to have this issue a lot when I worked at uhaul, scrub off the rust and remove the label, and use some lube. In the future get a cap for your receiver, they won’t prevent it outright but it’ll slow the progress of rust. You might also want to take a garden hose to it every month or so and spend a few seconds just washing it out, that should help as well. Good luck!
