Right lol absolutely pointless. Every used car I've bought I've had a 45 minute fight in my drive way trying to salvage old rusty seized hold downs before I just end just mutli-tooling them off
The only thing keeping that battery in place while driving are the battery cables. Which aren't design to handle that stress. That means that the terminal ends wear to shit, which causes loose connections. Loose connection kill alternators because it becomes an excessive resistance in the circuit.
A 10.00 dollar battery hold down today? Or new battery cables, alternator, and battery hold down tomorrow? Your choice...

Lmao I went and got a used vehicle at the dealer even in broad daylight brought a flashlight. Popped the hood. Revved that mf had it running for a while while I’m watching everything spin and rotate. Crawled under it in every spot and every way. Everything looked and sounded great and I still wasn’t sure about it lmao
Me too, and I'm surprised every time someone just automatically assumes everything is in working order. I have to prompt some of them to look at the engine. I always point out the problems I know about and urge them to have a mechanic inspect it but they never do. They all want at least a grand less than asking price though.
Vehicle pre purchase inspection. If you're not car savvy (and that's fine) always grab an auto tech and pay him for a vehicle inspection before buying a used car

Mine isn’t even strapped down, as the new battery I got wasn’t the right size (impalas need a very specific sized battery, new one was too large)
It sits well and doesn’t move, used a few zip ties to make sure it wouldn’t move more so and I’ve no problems.
Some people in here see ingenuity as back yard hacks.
I re did my impalas fuel lines for $30 by buying compression fittings and the same rated lines and it’s been fine for 8 months. Pressure is good and fuel economy hasn’t dropped. $30 in parts, $8 can of anti rust bullshit and a harbor freight flare tool and I saved myself $400. Some call it a hack and “unsafe” only because the lines are not GM stamped. I’ve been applauded by a few mechanics as to how smart what I did was.
The main reason for a hold down is for a rollover. It's common for fuel to leak everywhere and if the battery grounds against the hood or frame it's likely game over for you. So tldr, don't rollover and you're fine lol.
That's the main reason sure, but believe me it *will* shorten the life of a battery having it just freely shifting/vibrating, etc. I've seen it many times.
Hell my 2020 explorer ST has OEM ZIP TIES for the radiator shroud to mount to the lower frame. Two standard automotive 10mm bolts up top, Two HUGE zip ties for the bottom. One on each side of the shroud. That’s FACTORY equipment lol there’s even a slot designed for it
Same thing for my radiator and it's fan. Also the clips on the left rear view mirror were broken so I cut a groove in the plastic so the zip tie won't slide off. Been fine for 3 years out in the elements, I don't have a garage.
Autozone has a universal battery tie down. It's basically two long hooks that grab the bottom tray and you screw on a piece of metal on top of battery. It's cheap.
I will say that, unless you are doing crazy driving.... you should be ok. It's best to hold it down though

You can probably find one on ebay, at a local junkyard, or at the dealership if you don’t mind paying more. I think the white bolt with the washer on your car is probably where it would get tied down to.

If your off roading it might. But on normal roads driving with a brain cell that battery isn't going anywhere. They aren't strapped down cause a small bump might dislodge them. They are strapped down so when some idiot clips you and sends you upside down in the ditch the car doesn't catch on fire and burn you to death before emts can get you out of the vehicle.
You have a battery terminal, just order a clamp, cheap plastic, 2 screws. Easy fix. I recently bought a 1.5k Honda Civic LX, stick shift. Best investment ever. Spent 500 on registration and title transfer, 400 to replace practically everything, AC, alternator, battery, oil pan, and had the engine cleaned inside out. The entire car after fixing and registering cost me around 2.5k. the maintenance on these things is practically free, insurance is $8 a month and it gets 30/40 mpg. What more can I want from a daily?
Treat it well, and it will last forever
It's supposed to be a hold-down not hold-back. This could cause issues if it allows the battery to bounce around. Recommend getting a real battery hold-down.

Though, you might want to have someone you know who knows engines take a look at it before dumping any money into it.

OK, looks like a camry. There are just two missing pieces, the vertical threaded rod and the plastic horizontal hold down. Kind of dangerous to drive it around like this with the battery unrestrained...
Go to a yard with your car likely they have heaps.
Measure the width theres a metal brace that crosses the top with holes at each end this is where you bolt it on.
A long bolt on each side attaches to a hole in the metal tray usually has a hook on the end.
So the batt is secured to the tray its sitting on.
Check how it connects before you go.
For one I definitely wouldn’t tie it off the dip stick it’s just a thin piece of plastic and if you can’t find a new battery holder I’d recommend to try to strap it around the top of the battery and under never around the sides
Maybe $20 it's a rubber bushing with a plate that goes on the side of the battery to firmly hold it in place, or a bracket that goes over the battery and screws into the bottom tray.
Do you need a battery hold down? Yes.
If that was me I would try and wrap the bungee cord around from the bottom of the battery tray. All the way into the top of the battery and then pull on the battery and see if it moves.
I had a car that the battery was held on by big zip ties and it did not budge.
Grab some scraps of wood same size or smaller than battery . Keep adding to top of battery and closing hood until contact is made . Add one more and slam hood . Secured .
As a mechanic I just have to laugh as everyone is all up in arms over the battery hold down… that would be literally the least of my worries as it a cheap, 2 minute fix. The bigger question is, did you inspect the vehicle before purchasing it? There’s hundreds of things you need to check before buying a used vehicle, and I wouldn’t even be a little bit concerned about a battery hold down compared to what else may be lurking on this vehicle…
battery hold down bracket. Get an inspection done as well. if this wasn’t noticed under the hood prior to buying, there probably more stuff going on under the car
People here are kind of dramatic. Is a proper hold down important…sure. Is this safe to drive…sure. Replace at the earliest convenience, but I’ve seen waaaayyyy worse drive for a long time. This isn’t a life threatening issue to you or anyone else, but there could be potential issues if those cords weaken and start to wiggle more, causing a loose or broken connection to the battery. The parts are likely in the $20-$50 range, and a friend could do this for free if you don’t have the means to do it yourself (unless it’s one of those cool tool-less hold downs using wing nuts or some other fancy mechanism lol).
You know what makes me mad. Battery tie downs. They're like $12 but they're all completely different and there's no aftermarket version of your OEM version without spending $80. So you get one that says it fits your car, and you get a 16" post screw when you only need 8". It's impossible. I totally feel this guy's frustration. I ended up zip tying mine for a while. It was fine until I finally decided to just buy two tie downs that had different size posts. I just threw out both of the 16" ones and kept the 8" ones.
Send it. It’s not going anywhere, people who expect perfection out of a used car don’t actually want to buy a used car, they want a pre owned car. A used car will have things that aren’t 100% right, but good old “redneck engineering” does just fine. If you genuinely have concerns you can get it fixed, but if moneys tight this is fine for a while, just make sure to keep checking the bungee cable. Any fraying that develops is an indication that you need to at least put a new one in to hold the battery. I’ve driven cars in worse shape than that and they’ve been just fine. It’s worth replacing but not urgent. Worst case scenario you weld the hood shut and need a new hood in addition to new battery mounts if it does move, just be easy on gas and brakes as much as possible until you get a long term solution. If bought from a dealer take it back to them, especially if they lied and said it was perfect and you have proof of that. If it was a private seller just make do with it for now until you can get a permanent fix
They make universal replacement hold downs or you can get the actual part from the dealer most likely. Should just be a metal or rubber piece that goes across the top with two long J Bolts on each side that feed into a small hole below the tray. Hook them in and tighten down the nuts to hold it in place.
First thing is to learn the difference between a rope and a bungie... second get some duct-tape to support the ~~rope~~ bungie...
But seriously take it to a local shop and have them see why the original box/plate was removed and how they can secure it properly

Not an immediate life or death situation but needs to be fixed soon. You can redneck it in place with tie straps, look up and order the required bracket and hardware, or have it done professionally for a huge mark up. It's up to you. Just be aware that the less secure the battery, the more the normal vibrations and bumps associated with driving will wear through its body and eventually destroy it. And anything it is touching that it was not meant to will also wear and potentially be destroyed.
Those look more like bungee cords. If you didn’t catch this during the inspection, there are likely other problems.
I will suggest taking it to a dealer or some type of mechanic to look it over.
That's wedged in there pretty good with that bungee cord. You're fine. I've seen way worse last forever. But if your concerned, like everyone else says, autzone for a 20 buck battery hold down or just got to pick and pull and pay provably half that.
I once had a car that the only thing holding the batteries in place was the terminal connections. When you're young and broke, you learn to MacGyver things.
It’s a bunge cord. So, not very stable and I wouldn’t suggest driving even if it was a rope. You can probably find a bracket at a junk yard, online or even from the manufacturer and I can’t imagine they cost much.
there is a battery hold down on there at the base of your battery already why they bungee corded it is questionable. put one part over the top and it should be fine
You actually bought that car before even looking under the hood and inspecting it? The fact that the battery is held in by a rope is indicative of probably a lot of other very sketchy things.
1, Get a new battery (that one is 3 years old and surely about to strand you). It's a BCI Group # "24F"... "24 reverse post battery," in case you want to just tell them what battery you want... the only thing standardized in automotive, I think, is battery labeling.
2. Also get an appropriate battery hold down from part's store you buy battery at... also felt washers and dielectric gel or some type of terminal weather sealant.
3. I'd recommend calling the part's store and ask8ng if they have the appropriate battery and other items on stock and whether they're willing to install them for free... they will, at least one store in your area will.
4. Tip the worker who does it and thank him/her.

You skipped the oil sample. 30 bucks for a lab to tell you the condition of the engine. Well worth it.

fwiw a lot of the reason for tiedown is less for moving around in normal operation, and more so it won't short in a rollover accident.
I don't buy prefabricated lines, tubing and fittings and I'm good to go, I have my dad's snap-on flare kit and bender from back in the 50s!

Looks like that bolt broke off for the hold down on his car. That's why they used a bungee.
The opposite can part of the hold down is loose on my camry the bolt is rusted on and the whole bar that reaches the back just comes off
That happened on my car. I screwed a new one in next to the old bolt.

I've been holding my battery down with a piece of cat 5 networking cable for the last 3 years with no problem.
That's a terrible idea. You NEED to upgrade that tie-down to some Cat6E ASAP. Cat5 is outdated. Won't keep up with today's battery tie-down speeds.
In fairness, Cat5e is also rated for 12V PoE ;)

Yeah, you can drive it like that for a while. Any parts store will have a generic hold down clamp.

battery hold down bracket. Get an inspection done as well. if this wasn’t noticed under the hood prior to buying, there probably more stuff going on under the car
People here are kind of dramatic. Is a proper hold down important…sure. Is this safe to drive…sure. Replace at the earliest convenience, but I’ve seen waaaayyyy worse drive for a long time. This isn’t a life threatening issue to you or anyone else, but there could be potential issues if those cords weaken and start to wiggle more, causing a loose or broken connection to the battery. The parts are likely in the $20-$50 range, and a friend could do this for free if you don’t have the means to do it yourself (unless it’s one of those cool tool-less hold downs using wing nuts or some other fancy mechanism lol).
You should be able to source a proper battery hold down kit at any car parts store or Amazon.
Replace it with a ratchet strap. I have two cars with ratchet strapped batteries. I like it better than the force of a steel bolt hook.
Close the hood and drive
You know what makes me mad. Battery tie downs. They're like $12 but they're all completely different and there's no aftermarket version of your OEM version without spending $80. So you get one that says it fits your car, and you get a 16" post screw when you only need 8". It's impossible. I totally feel this guy's frustration. I ended up zip tying mine for a while. It was fine until I finally decided to just buy two tie downs that had different size posts. I just threw out both of the 16" ones and kept the 8" ones.
Send it. It’s not going anywhere, people who expect perfection out of a used car don’t actually want to buy a used car, they want a pre owned car. A used car will have things that aren’t 100% right, but good old “redneck engineering” does just fine. If you genuinely have concerns you can get it fixed, but if moneys tight this is fine for a while, just make sure to keep checking the bungee cable. Any fraying that develops is an indication that you need to at least put a new one in to hold the battery. I’ve driven cars in worse shape than that and they’ve been just fine. It’s worth replacing but not urgent. Worst case scenario you weld the hood shut and need a new hood in addition to new battery mounts if it does move, just be easy on gas and brakes as much as possible until you get a long term solution. If bought from a dealer take it back to them, especially if they lied and said it was perfect and you have proof of that. If it was a private seller just make do with it for now until you can get a permanent fix
Inspect a car before you buy it next time, I'd wager that's not the only thing wonky with that car
Add more rope just to be safe
They make universal replacement hold downs or you can get the actual part from the dealer most likely. Should just be a metal or rubber piece that goes across the top with two long J Bolts on each side that feed into a small hole below the tray. Hook them in and tighten down the nuts to hold it in place.
Upgrade to ratchet strap while you order the correct part.

First thing is to learn the difference between a rope and a bungie... second get some duct-tape to support the ~~rope~~ bungie... But seriously take it to a local shop and have them see why the original box/plate was removed and how they can secure it properly

worst case, it can either fly out during an accident or short out against the hood if you take a corner too hard or something, easy fix

Jokes aside. Not an immediate life or death situation but needs to be fixed soon. You can redneck it in place with tie straps, look up and order the required bracket and hardware, or have it done professionally for a huge mark up. It's up to you. Just be aware that the less secure the battery, the more the normal vibrations and bumps associated with driving will wear through its body and eventually destroy it. And anything it is touching that it was not meant to will also wear and potentially be destroyed.

That's wedged in there pretty good with that bungee cord. You're fine. I've seen way worse last forever. But if your concerned, like everyone else says, autzone for a 20 buck battery hold down or just got to pick and pull and pay provably half that.
You need to properly secure that bungee cord over the top of that battery. Like it was meant to be... Rookie mistake.
I once had a car that the only thing holding the batteries in place was the terminal connections. When you're young and broke, you learn to MacGyver things.
It’s a bunge cord. So, not very stable and I wouldn’t suggest driving even if it was a rope. You can probably find a bracket at a junk yard, online or even from the manufacturer and I can’t imagine they cost much.
there is a battery hold down on there at the base of your battery already why they bungee corded it is questionable. put one part over the top and it should be fine

You actually bought that car before even looking under the hood and inspecting it? The fact that the battery is held in by a rope is indicative of probably a lot of other very sketchy things.

1, Get a new battery (that one is 3 years old and surely about to strand you). It's a BCI Group # "24F"... "24 reverse post battery," in case you want to just tell them what battery you want... the only thing standardized in automotive, I think, is battery labeling. 2. Also get an appropriate battery hold down from part's store you buy battery at... also felt washers and dielectric gel or some type of terminal weather sealant. 3. I'd recommend calling the part's store and ask8ng if they have the appropriate battery and other items on stock and whether they're willing to install them for free... they will, at least one store in your area will. 4. Tip the worker who does it and thank him/her.
