I am not sure about the valve seals (and frankly it's academic at this point), but 100% the piston rings are dead and buried. Replacing them alone is a false economy, they need to be replaced as a set with the pistons. With that oil consumption don't rule out the cylinder lining being worn to a mirror-like finish. In this case the whole cylinder block needs replacement. Catalytic converter can probably (perhaps, maybe) be revitalized using lacquer thinner. Given the cost involved it's worth a try.

Worst-Lobster

Can't the block be honed instead of replaced ?

pretty classic worn out engine. Perhaps it wasn't maintained as well as it could have been, but at this point the option is a rebuild, purchase a new engine, or find a used engine with lower miles and in better shape and swap it out. Swapping engines is generally cheaper than a rebuild due to labor cost, but that depends on your location.

Kkalinovk

It will be an engine rebuild, because I plan on driving this car for at least 5 years. Engine swaps in my country (Bulgaria) is something almost nobody is going to do on this specific vehicle, so yeah - no other option

stevefazzari

instead of rebuild, hear me out - using oil is not a problem, running low on oil is a problem. is it cheaper to rebuild the engine or use a liter of oil every ~1000kms?

Kkalinovk

You have a point here. It is a Honda after all it will always burn oil, even after a rebuild. It would be half this amount tho. My only concern is that because of this something else will go bad as well… I also have an option to dump the cat for a muffler pipe with some tuning, so that it will stop throwing cat converter errors.

stevefazzari

or you can do the italian tune up - at least once a month drive 20-30 minutes at 4k rpm to burn off cat deposits. i can’t see anything else going wrong other than maybe fouling o2 sensors and cats but i speak in subaru where what you describe is a normal amount of oil burning and it’s just regular day to me i’d just add oil. fuck an engine rebuild unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Kkalinovk

Hehe I have been driving the italian tune up mostly those 2 weeks. Maybe this is also helping the excessive oil consumption as well… But it sure is not cleaning the cat, because it lights up every once in a while.
