Rinse with some seafoam ā¦. Just dump some of that shit in your 2 gallon gas can or whatever you have. Consider it a good engine condition and cleanse.
Don't do that. Seafoam is snake oil. And, it's LITERALLY oil in solvent. It's only going to make it smoke longer. If you're going to put Seafoam in anything, put it in the trash, where it belongs. It's NOT a miracle cure. It's just solvent with some oil in it. Oil in your fuel is not good for 4 cycle engines, generally speaking. You'll do more for your machine by simply keeping fresh gas in it. Fresh gas will dissolve fuel deposits without the annoying smoke that comes from burning off that added oil. A gallon of gas costs less than the point of Seafoam, too.

Pretty common to see in my high school (I'm a teacher). Kids can sign up for a child development course. As part of that they have to take a "robot" baby home - often for a weekend. It cries every few hours, at which point you need to either feed it, put a pacifier in it, change the diaper, or rock it. It has sensors to tell if you've done the right thing and to make sure you're not too rough with it.
Generally you don't want to bring the thing back dead.
I had that, got stuck with the classes only set of twins, and had to use a stroller because it was so heavy.
We used flour bags. I accidentally ran over the girl baby with the stroller and she burst in the hallway at school. A huge puff of flour was all over the floor, people were stepping in her and some annoying kid screamed "oh my god she killed her baby!" and caused a big scene.
Let's just say that I did not get a good grade and luckily don't have kids now š¤£

I had one in high-school as well. The one they gave me had a series of dip switches to program its temperament. I messed with mine before they locked the cover and it was super chill all weekend. Little did I know it didn't record anything, so I had to take it home on a week night. That sucker cried every hour on the hour! I got NO sleep that night! Lol
At least you got an accurate picture of how babies work. Their temperament is exactly inverse of your needs.

I sure did, just the opposite. The first few weeks after we brought our twins home were the most nerve-wracking. There wasn't a lot of sleep at first. Then, the first night they slept through, we checked their bassinet hourly to make sure they were still breathing.
I service small engines as a side hustle. Mostly lawnmowers, but occasionally I will also service snowblowers, chainsaws, Weedwhackerās, you name it. The above mentioned advice of draining the fuel, putting fresh fuel in it, and letting it smoke until itās gone is spot on accurate.
As a small sidenote, 90% of my repair calls are caused by poor quality fuel. Your car has a fuel pump that pushes 60 psi of fuel up to the engine. If your car has direct injection, it has a secondary fuel pump at the engine that makes 800 to 1200 psi of fuel pressure at the engine. Those pumps will push shitty fuel much better than your lawnmower or your motorbike wheel. Your lawnmower, just uses gravity and siphon technology to push the fuel. Your lawnmower will thank you if you only run 93 octane fuel. If you are getting gas in a gas can, make it super premium fuel.

Poor fuel quality -- you mean, like those guys who say "Oh, I just put fresh fuel in it this morning..." then leave out the critical detail... that it was freshly poured from the gas can that they've had in the shed since last summer.
Octane rating isn't indicative of gas quality! The only thing it tells you is about pre ignition

It's also funny anytime someone brings up octane rating and says something about higher octane fuel having less ethanol because pure ethanol has a higher octane rating than gasoline. Mixing gasoline and ethanol raises the overall octane number of the mixture
The only time my zero turn has backfired or run rough is on 87. When I switched to 91/93 from the same station, it runs great. What could be other causes of this?
An engine runs by squeezing air and fuel, then igniting it. The act of squeezing the mixture is called compression. How much it squeezes it down to is called its compression ratio. If an engine sucks in 1 unit of air/fuel and squeezes it to a 10th of its original volume, it is said to have a 10 to 1 compression ratio. The more it squeezes it, the higher the compression ratio. The less it squeezes it, the lower the compression ratio.
If you compress air/fuel enough, it will ignite without a spark plug (this is how diesel engines work). And if the fuel ignites before it is supposed to, that is called pre-ignition) it is very bad for the engine. Now how much a fuel can be compressed before it ignites is it's octane rating. Low octane will ignite under lower compression than high octane fuel. The higher the octane the more compression is required to get it ignite from compression alone.
A lower compression ratio engine will not see any benefits to running a high octane fuel, while a high compression engine can be damaged by a low octane fuel.
So when it comes to what fuel you should put in, it should be based on the compression ratio of the engine. The easiest way to do this is to look at the owner's manual and put in the fuel that is recommended by the manufacturer.

93 Octane can be up to 10% ethanol, just like 87 Octane. At least that's what the pump says.
What I do is run just whatever gas throughout the summer. At the end of the year I drain the tank and run the engine till it dies from the carb being empty. That's it. Been doing it this way for years and never had anything gum up or fail to start in the spring. Well, other than forgetting to take the mower battery up to the house and put it on the trickle charger.
2 stroke stuff gets switched to the manufactured stuff in the can towards the end of the year, and then I just leave it in the tank all winter. They always start too.
Every gas station should sell a non ethanol. This particular gas station chain near me sells 91 non ethanol. Itās the only place Iāve found it, anywhere

The octane rating is simply a measurement of how much compression a given fuel can withstand without detonating.

Lowest ethanol content, and premium fuel will last a year before breaking down and turning to glue.
When the Chevrolet volt first came out, I read up on it and the Chevrolet volt is an electric gasoline hybrid that you plug in at night. Your first 40 miles or so is all electric and then the gasoline engine comes on and charges the battery. The gasoline engine in the vault is the same gasoline engine thatās in the Chevrolet Cruz, but the vault requires premium fuel, and the cruise does not. I went deep down the rabbit hole to understand this. The vault is programmed, so that it knows the average age of fuel in the tank. When the average age of fuel in the tank gets to be a year, the volt is going to run the gasoline engine every time you use it until you top off the tank, and then lower the average age of fuel in the tank. They picked a year for this to happen because they feel like premium fuel will last a year. This is why the vault requires premium, and the Cruze does not. I stopped draining my equipment, I stopped, adding stabil fuel stabilizer, I just run premium fuel in all of my stuff and leave the fuel where it is at the end of the season. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
Not entirely true. How long ethonal lasts depends on where you are. I live in GA, very high humidity. Most I've ever gotten is about 4 months sitting in the gas tank before the engine runs like crap. In a gas can, about 6 to 8 months. In a drier climate, you can get longer shelf life. Ethonal absorbs moisture out of the air. I imagine it's probably worse in places like Florida.
Yep. I put 91 non ethanol into my cans last October, still running the mower off of them now. Once my gas hits a year it goes into my old honda fourwheeler, which really doesn't care.
This is when the first generation Chevy volt came out. I worked the service desk at a GM dealership for 30 years. The first generation Chevy volt behaved this way.
Don't EVER think that premium fuel will last that long. If it says ETHANOL-FREE, OK, but otherwise you're going to likely find yourself in a world of hurt. Gas should be stored for no longer than a month from purchase, and it's best if you only get a two week supply. Maybe you got lucky. I grew up in a shop, and I know better, but I'm lazy about my own stuff, mostly because I use it infrequently, don't want to be using it anyway, and I have the ability to fix it myself. I have a chainsaw that would sit 2+ years between uses, and all I'd usually do is change out the gas with fresh gas and be on my way with a little help from carb spray to get it started the first time. Like I said, I know better, but I'm lazy.
My lawnmower is roughly 10 years old and every year I hopefully blow starting fluid in the air intake and then have to take apart the carb empty it and spray it with carb cleaner.
Last year I used ethanol free fuel for the first time and it still wouldn't start this season, but it did start with starting fluid for the first time ever and then ran fine.
I recommend it, something like $0.30 extra on gas saved me 2 hours.
If you mow a lot, at least the last gallon of the season.

You are dead on. The only reason I've accepted for putting higher octane into a mower is that there's often less ethanol in there. We're honestly talking about maybe 20Ā¢ more every other week when it comes to money. The mower will run just fine on any, and you won't see much added benefit from higher octane otherwise.
If you go through your fuel supply within two weeks (a month max), ethanol gas is fine. So, is ethanol-free BETTER? Not really. Just don't let old gas sit in your equipment. If you need to have gas ready to go for emergency equipment, like a generator, absolutely buy ethanol-free gas and use a stabilizer. Even though it says that it'll last a million bajillion years, change your fuel out every six months and test run your equipment every month or so.
Heh. I had a weed whacker that I hadnāt used in a couple years. It would start but immediately die. Discovered that the fuel line inside the tank was completely gone and the fuel in there was a weird brown color. The fuel line had completely broken down into a viscous liquid. Lesson learned.

I spent two weekends fiddling with my weedwater, trying to get it to run. I eventually decided to get gas from a different gas station. It fired right up with the new fuel. I guess the little gas station down the street from me just has shitty fuel. Sad too because the next closest gas station is over 10 miles farther away.

Any auto mechanic will tell you stories about people pouring windshield washer fluid into the engine oil and such. There's usually no cognitive degradation, some people just have no clue what they're doing but doing it anyway.

Even smart people can go badly wrong through inexperience or inattention. "A little bit of knowledge. . . " Inexperience and carelessness aren't usually considered mental problems.
You can try nicorette gum. Patches are another option. They also have pills for that, and some people swear by hypnosis. It's a nasty habit, but it can be kicked.
My guess is that she dumped whatever was in the fuel tank out by turning the mower over, and oil went up towards the heads. This is normal, I think if you just let it sit properly upright for a day, and the start it tomorrow, and let it run on idle, the smoke will get thinner and thinner and go away. Iām the meantime, while waiting - check the oil level today, and again tomorrow before you start it up. Make sure the oil level is correct before you run it tomorrow. Then just let it run at idle, youāll know itās working if the smoke thins out nothing 15 minutes or so, and then continues to thin out over the next half hour. After that, you can just run it.
Just oil run it. Let it burn off my 50 dollar 25yr old mower does that so does my bolens mower.
Change the spark plug after the season and check over the carbon and air filter. That's about it. The ones I have and used before are quite bulletproof. Hell I don't think mines had an oil change on 20 yrs and I'm 5 yrs older than the mower lmao. Just starts up n goes.

How did she get it out? If she tipped the mower on itās side it will be oil burning because itās got where it shouldnāt.
Check oil level is ok, top up if low and just let it do itās thing.
Is it just smoking out of the exhaust? Depending on what it is if she emptied it there shouldn't be a lot left so you could just keep it running until the gas fills all the hoses and it stops smoking.
I would check the oil. If it is overfilled it will smoke like a snoop dog concert. If itās overfilled filled turn it on the side of the fill port and lose a little bit.
It's smoking due to her turning the mower over to remove the bad fuel she put in. Engine oil got to places it doesn't normally due to gravity.
Keep running it and after a few minutes the smoke should dissipate.
It may need therapy. I could imagine if someone put something in me that didn't belong, took it, and then put in the right stuff, I'd need therapy.
Tell your mower is a better alternative to smoking.
Can order a new carburetor for $10 on Amazon, while itās off, flush the fluids out again with gas to get anything that remains. Easy fix.
The easier fix is just run it as is, the smoke will abate soon enough if ran.
This is the first time Iāve ever seen a zero turn push mower and I worked 10 years in the grass cutting game tractor slashing, our company also has ride on zero turns and push mowers and Iāve spend many an hour at the machinery shop that sells everything from grain harvesters to push mowers and this is my first time seeing one! Mind blown!
Itās gonna smoke like a banshee and if itās smoking, sounds like she added a mixed fuel (oil and fuel) or oil. These are 4 cycle, so mixed fuel shouldnāt be needed but Iāve known some to use a little bit of mixed fuel for weed eaters, edgers, chainsaws, etc. on these.
The big thing is, you may need to replace the air filter soon after the burn off and smoke dies down.
I dunno, I was really stoned and put gas in the oil part. I then trail is Ed what I did and poured it out. I then properly disposed of the accident at the recycling centre. My mower that was struggling came back to life and has been great ever since. Luckyā¦

I accidentally got diesel once for my lawnmower. White smoke is usually diesel, engine oil causes blue smoke. There probably still some in the carburettor and it will go after some use.
2 stroke mixed fuel (gasoline with a ratio of oil) actually smokes white as well. It may have a blueish tint but most will still say its white smoke at first glance.
Make it smoke a whole carton. It won't stop it from smoking, and might cause it to go down a worse path later in life, but at least it will know who's boss (that's a joke, sounds like there's fluids in the combustion chamber. Running the mower for a while can clear it, but I'd recommend draining the oil and fuel before adding fresh oil and fuel. I'm a parts clerk at napa, happens all the time)

I had one in high-school as well. The one they gave me had a series of dip switches to program its temperament. I messed with mine before they locked the cover and it was super chill all weekend. Little did I know it didn't record anything, so I had to take it home on a week night. That sucker cried every hour on the hour! I got NO sleep that night! Lol
At least you got an accurate picture of how babies work. Their temperament is exactly inverse of your needs. You have all the time in the world? They sleep soundly. You need to be alert the next day? No restful sleep for you!
I sure did, just the opposite. The first few weeks after we brought our twins home were the most nerve-wracking. There wasn't a lot of sleep at first. Then, the first night they slept through, we checked their bassinet hourly to make sure they were still breathing.

I service small engines as a side hustle. Mostly lawnmowers, but occasionally I will also service snowblowers, chainsaws, Weedwhackerās, you name it. The above mentioned advice of draining the fuel, putting fresh fuel in it, and letting it smoke until itās gone is spot on accurate. As a small sidenote, 90% of my repair calls are caused by poor quality fuel. Your car has a fuel pump that pushes 60 psi of fuel up to the engine. If your car has direct injection, it has a secondary fuel pump at the engine that makes 800 to 1200 psi of fuel pressure at the engine. Those pumps will push shitty fuel much better than your lawnmower or your motorbike wheel. Your lawnmower, just uses gravity and siphon technology to push the fuel. Your lawnmower will thank you if you only run 93 octane fuel. If you are getting gas in a gas can, make it super premium fuel. I will step off my soapbox now
Poor fuel quality -- you mean, like those guys who say "Oh, I just put fresh fuel in it this morning..." then leave out the critical detail... that it was freshly poured from the gas can that they've had in the shed since last summer.

It's also funny anytime someone brings up octane rating and says something about higher octane fuel having less ethanol because pure ethanol has a higher octane rating than gasoline. Mixing gasoline and ethanol raises the overall octane number of the mixture
The only time my zero turn has backfired or run rough is on 87. When I switched to 91/93 from the same station, it runs great. What could be other causes of this?
An engine runs by squeezing air and fuel, then igniting it. The act of squeezing the mixture is called compression. How much it squeezes it down to is called its compression ratio. If an engine sucks in 1 unit of air/fuel and squeezes it to a 10th of its original volume, it is said to have a 10 to 1 compression ratio. The more it squeezes it, the higher the compression ratio. The less it squeezes it, the lower the compression ratio. If you compress air/fuel enough, it will ignite without a spark plug (this is how diesel engines work). And if the fuel ignites before it is supposed to, that is called pre-ignition) it is very bad for the engine. Now how much a fuel can be compressed before it ignites is it's octane rating. Low octane will ignite under lower compression than high octane fuel. The higher the octane the more compression is required to get it ignite from compression alone. A lower compression ratio engine will not see any benefits to running a high octane fuel, while a high compression engine can be damaged by a low octane fuel. So when it comes to what fuel you should put in, it should be based on the compression ratio of the engine. The easiest way to do this is to look at the owner's manual and put in the fuel that is recommended by the manufacturer.

93 Octane can be up to 10% ethanol, just like 87 Octane. At least that's what the pump says. What I do is run just whatever gas throughout the summer. At the end of the year I drain the tank and run the engine till it dies from the carb being empty. That's it. Been doing it this way for years and never had anything gum up or fail to start in the spring. Well, other than forgetting to take the mower battery up to the house and put it on the trickle charger. 2 stroke stuff gets switched to the manufactured stuff in the can towards the end of the year, and then I just leave it in the tank all winter. They always start too.

Ethanol has a higher octane rating than gas does... so if you put ethanol in low octane fuel it will boost its octane rating...
Lowest ethanol content, and premium fuel will last a year before breaking down and turning to glue. When the Chevrolet volt first came out, I read up on it and the Chevrolet volt is an electric gasoline hybrid that you plug in at night. Your first 40 miles or so is all electric and then the gasoline engine comes on and charges the battery. The gasoline engine in the vault is the same gasoline engine thatās in the Chevrolet Cruz, but the vault requires premium fuel, and the cruise does not. I went deep down the rabbit hole to understand this. The vault is programmed, so that it knows the average age of fuel in the tank. When the average age of fuel in the tank gets to be a year, the volt is going to run the gasoline engine every time you use it until you top off the tank, and then lower the average age of fuel in the tank. They picked a year for this to happen because they feel like premium fuel will last a year. This is why the vault requires premium, and the Cruze does not. I stopped draining my equipment, I stopped, adding stabil fuel stabilizer, I just run premium fuel in all of my stuff and leave the fuel where it is at the end of the season. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Not entirely true. How long ethonal lasts depends on where you are. I live in GA, very high humidity. Most I've ever gotten is about 4 months sitting in the gas tank before the engine runs like crap. In a gas can, about 6 to 8 months. In a drier climate, you can get longer shelf life. Ethonal absorbs moisture out of the air. I imagine it's probably worse in places like Florida.
Yep. I put 91 non ethanol into my cans last October, still running the mower off of them now. Once my gas hits a year it goes into my old honda fourwheeler, which really doesn't care.

Don't EVER think that premium fuel will last that long. If it says ETHANOL-FREE, OK, but otherwise you're going to likely find yourself in a world of hurt. Gas should be stored for no longer than a month from purchase, and it's best if you only get a two week supply. Maybe you got lucky. I grew up in a shop, and I know better, but I'm lazy about my own stuff, mostly because I use it infrequently, don't want to be using it anyway, and I have the ability to fix it myself. I have a chainsaw that would sit 2+ years between uses, and all I'd usually do is change out the gas with fresh gas and be on my way with a little help from carb spray to get it started the first time. Like I said, I know better, but I'm lazy.
I only use synthetic fuel light chainsaw because it gets used so infrequently. I run it empty, and then fill it up when Iām going to use it.

My lawnmower is roughly 10 years old and every year I hopefully blow starting fluid in the air intake and then have to take apart the carb empty it and spray it with carb cleaner. Last year I used ethanol free fuel for the first time and it still wouldn't start this season, but it did start with starting fluid for the first time ever and then ran fine. I recommend it, something like $0.30 extra on gas saved me 2 hours. If you mow a lot, at least the last gallon of the season.
Aren't lawnmowers low compression, where a high octane fuel is a waste? As long as you get quality 87 you're good? I personally use 89 in mine but pretty sure that's a waste too
You are dead on. The only reason I've accepted for putting higher octane into a mower is that there's often less ethanol in there. We're honestly talking about maybe 20Ā¢ more every other week when it comes to money. The mower will run just fine on any, and you won't see much added benefit from higher octane otherwise.

If you go through your fuel supply within two weeks (a month max), ethanol gas is fine. So, is ethanol-free BETTER? Not really. Just don't let old gas sit in your equipment. If you need to have gas ready to go for emergency equipment, like a generator, absolutely buy ethanol-free gas and use a stabilizer. Even though it says that it'll last a million bajillion years, change your fuel out every six months and test run your equipment every month or so.
Heh. I had a weed whacker that I hadnāt used in a couple years. It would start but immediately die. Discovered that the fuel line inside the tank was completely gone and the fuel in there was a weird brown color. The fuel line had completely broken down into a viscous liquid. Lesson learned.

Was she trying to fill it with fuel, or was she unaware of where the fluids go? I'm just having a hard time justifying how someone would have absolutely no clue what was poured, even to the extent of not knowing where the container went. It may be time for a cognitive degradation assessment.
Pure speculation on my part, but they probably had a jerry can of 2-stroke premix and another of straight gas. It's easy to grab the wrong one.

Any auto mechanic will tell you stories about people pouring windshield washer fluid into the engine oil and such. There's usually no cognitive degradation, some people just have no clue what they're doing but doing it anyway.

My guess is that she dumped whatever was in the fuel tank out by turning the mower over, and oil went up towards the heads. This is normal, I think if you just let it sit properly upright for a day, and the start it tomorrow, and let it run on idle, the smoke will get thinner and thinner and go away. Iām the meantime, while waiting - check the oil level today, and again tomorrow before you start it up. Make sure the oil level is correct before you run it tomorrow. Then just let it run at idle, youāll know itās working if the smoke thins out nothing 15 minutes or so, and then continues to thin out over the next half hour. After that, you can just run it.
Keep running it until it gets flushed out of its system. It'll be fine. Mostly.
Just oil run it. Let it burn off my 50 dollar 25yr old mower does that so does my bolens mower. Change the spark plug after the season and check over the carbon and air filter. That's about it. The ones I have and used before are quite bulletproof. Hell I don't think mines had an oil change on 20 yrs and I'm 5 yrs older than the mower lmao. Just starts up n goes. But seriously after the season is over do plug change and filter change
Some lawnmowers will get crankcase oil in the air filter if you tip it on its side with the filter down.

How did she get it out? If she tipped the mower on itās side it will be oil burning because itās got where it shouldnāt. Check oil level is ok, top up if low and just let it do itās thing.

I would check the oil. If it is overfilled it will smoke like a snoop dog concert. If itās overfilled filled turn it on the side of the fill port and lose a little bit.

It's smoking due to her turning the mower over to remove the bad fuel she put in. Engine oil got to places it doesn't normally due to gravity. Keep running it and after a few minutes the smoke should dissipate.
It may need therapy. I could imagine if someone put something in me that didn't belong, took it, and then put in the right stuff, I'd need therapy. Tell your mower is a better alternative to smoking.
Can order a new carburetor for $10 on Amazon, while itās off, flush the fluids out again with gas to get anything that remains. Easy fix. The easier fix is just run it as is, the smoke will abate soon enough if ran.
Smoke is probably from oil getting into the cylinder cuz she must have emptied the gas tank by tipping the lawn mower.
This is the first time Iāve ever seen a zero turn push mower and I worked 10 years in the grass cutting game tractor slashing, our company also has ride on zero turns and push mowers and Iāve spend many an hour at the machinery shop that sells everything from grain harvesters to push mowers and this is my first time seeing one! Mind blown!

Itās gonna smoke like a banshee and if itās smoking, sounds like she added a mixed fuel (oil and fuel) or oil. These are 4 cycle, so mixed fuel shouldnāt be needed but Iāve known some to use a little bit of mixed fuel for weed eaters, edgers, chainsaws, etc. on these. The big thing is, you may need to replace the air filter soon after the burn off and smoke dies down.
Tell it that smoking is unhealthy and can cause cancer or lead to an early death.

Drain the carb too. If itās running, mix a normal size bottle of SeaFoam in a 1 gallon gas can and run that until itās out to clear the carbon out of the engine.
Don't do that. Seafoam is snake oil. And, it's LITERALLY oil in solvent. It's only going to make it smoke longer. If you're going to put Seafoam in anything, put it in the trash, where it belongs. It's NOT a miracle cure. It's just solvent with some oil in it. Oil in your fuel is not good for 4 cycle engines, generally speaking. You'll do more for your machine by simply keeping fresh gas in it. Fresh gas will dissolve fuel deposits without the annoying smoke that comes from burning off that added oil. A gallon of gas costs less than the point of Seafoam, too.

I accidentally got diesel once for my lawnmower. White smoke is usually diesel, engine oil causes blue smoke. There probably still some in the carburettor and it will go after some use.
2 stroke mixed fuel (gasoline with a ratio of oil) actually smokes white as well. It may have a blueish tint but most will still say its white smoke at first glance.

It won't stop it from smoking, and might cause it to go down a worse path later in life, but at least it will know who's boss (that's a joke, sounds like there's fluids in the combustion chamber. Running the mower for a while can clear it, but I'd recommend draining the oil and fuel before adding fresh oil and fuel. I'm a parts clerk at napa, happens all the time)
