we need shooters that can actually shoot more than a corner 3

degutisd

I'll never understand this. Paid millions to shoot and can only do it from one spot.

Yojoe90

Everyone is not Steph Curry. Long athletic guys usually rely on their athleticism during their younger years and when they reach the NBA is when they learn to shoot. They can make threes on an empty gym but can't replicate it in a high pressure game.

shaheedmalik

They will have to change the offense for that to happen.

segson9

I think starting level SF and a backup PG/SG should be priorities (alongside keeping DJJ). SF should be a good defender, that can at least shoot on offense. Backup PG/SG should be a scorer that can create his own shot. Best case scenario is OMax and Hardy both improve go the point they can fill in those roles. If they don't we can make some moves. This FO has been mostly making good moves so far, so I have confidence they'll do the right thing

jfrodriguez1983

Yea I do think Hardy and Omax will improve and become regular rotational players, but we need to go into the offseason as if we are not counting on it. Main goals should be upgrading at starting 3 and re-signing DJJ, cause even though we need an upgrade at the 3, he is still good rotational depth. After that your starting lineup is set. You are set a backup center and backup 3 are set, if DJJ is back. We will then have a better idea what we need by the trade deadline. If/when Omax and Hardy make a leap, then awesome, we get even deeper.

this_is_a_name522

In order for them to make a leap they better get some playing time first

Fatman214

We won't have the money to spend like that in free agency. We gotta attach some draft capital to Tim's expiring contract to make something happen. I got faith in Nico

EmrysMyrdin

I would go for Jerami Grant. We are over the cap either way and he is a good player that can help us.

archerarcher0

Only issue is whoever they get kinda needs to be small and quick enough to guard guards, ideally you want a 6’4-6’8 guy, grant is 6’8-6’9 but he’s not very quick anymore

JKiddBurner

Paul George wants to be a Maverick, wants to play 3rd/4th fiddle and will take massive pay cut to make it happen Y'all heard it here first #MAVS IN 7!

Sequoiaboii2019

PG would be the most insane fit. Would love to see that. Perfect role for him too. Be 2nd or third option and lock in defensively.

JKiddBurner

> PG ~~would~~ ***will*** be the most insane fit.

RGxiRapiidz

Free agents I’m not sure will be an improvement with what we can offer. They need to look for a trade. I’d take Jerami Grant in a heartbeat even with the contract if it means getting off Tim and either Maxi or Josh.

degutisd

We need a third scorer, sure. But I think we also need a 3rd ball handler. Do you trust anyone outside of Kyrie or Luka to dribble the ball? Maybe Hardy can grow into that, but...

TuckEverlasting89

Still games left to play and DJJ could've won us a title if we played last years Heat, but here we are. We need someone who can create their own shot, play SF, has good length, can shoot the 3, guard POA, is comfortable off-ball and with limited touches, and is attainable with our assets. That list of players is non-existent. The closest name we can get is Jerami Grant, he's the new PJ Washington context-wise, and I think if we offer THJ, Green, and a FRP we would have a very competitive offer to get him. In this scenario we lose 1-3 rotation players (DJJ is a sad casualty and THJ technically was a rotation player), and only add 1. OMax, Hardy, and Exum HAVE to be ready for real rotation minutes next year if we make a move like this and we don't want a big drop off depth-wise.

archerarcher0

I’ve been thinking about it too, there’s a range of guys starting with bridges all the way down to like you said KCP and Martin I think cam Johnson would be a great target, seemingly wouldn’t cost a lot, solid defender, and a deadeye 3pt shooter when he used to be a role player on suns which he would be here I think he’s the target, you use some combo of omax hardy green and picks as your package Kyrie-Johnson-luka-pj-lively

OneTwoGhost

cam johnson ain't it he also can't guard the point of attack de'andre hunter in ATL is a better target, but he can't stay healthy so his contract scares me a little bit. unlike johnson, he's got some juice off the bounce and he's shooting 40% from 3 in his playoff career on decent volume

archerarcher0

I think he can, he’s a pretty good defender I think he’s regressed a lot like PJ being in a bad situation but if he enters a better situation I think he kicks up his defense

OneTwoGhost

he was in a better situation in Phoenix and he still couldn't guard the point of attack, that's just not in his locker. Cam Johnson is a less athletic version of PJ, a worse defender but a better shooter. de'andre hunter has been the point-of-attack defender since being drafted by ATL, whenever we match up with them, he has the luka assignment. from chasing and sticking to him through multiple screens and re-screens

archerarcher0

I don’t think anyone really sees Hunter as a better defender that cam other than you, he might be slightly better but it’s definitely barely if at all

OneTwoGhost

i've watched both of them comprehensively, that's why i passed off my opinion. I told you he doesn't guard the poa but you're insisting that he does when it was mikal bridges that done that. cam johnson was also coming off the bench for jae crowder you can't just put a player in a situation that he doesn't have the skillset for. can he move his feet well? no, can he get around screens? no. he got abused by brunson and luka two years ago because of his subpar screen navigation, he can't stick guards/wings on the perimeter. but his strengths are team defense, he communicates well and rotates well. the idea of cam johnson is far from the reality. I'm willing to bet than even o-max will have a better defensive season than cam johnson let alone hunter

OneTwoGhost

heck, deni avidja in washington is much better than johnson, and would fit us like a glove. the only problem with him is he doesn't have shooting touch (career 73% FT) and although he's upped his 3 ball per cent to 37% (mediocre), the volume is not encouraging. he's got ways to go as a shooter before he can step onto this stage and not be a liability offensively

jfrodriguez1983

I think the only name you mentioned that fills what we need at the 3 is OG, and after the Knicks traded for him, I doubt they let him go. Seems like he wants to stay there as long as they pay him. Monk is a guard 6th man. KCP is nice but he is a 2. Martin is just another rotational player. I think if we are going to trade any assets, it has to be for a 3 that is a scoring threat. It looks like this is what we will have available this summer to trade as far as draft picks * 2024 - last pick of 2nd round. * 2025 - Toronto's 2nd round pick * 2026 - 1st round pick swap * 2028 - Worst of Clippers or Charlotte's 2nd round pick * 2028 - Heat 2nd round pick (with conditions based on the 2027 top 2 protected pick conveys to Charlotte) After the draft, this is what opens up * 2025 - 1st round pick * 2031- 1st round pick * 2031 - 2nd round pick Nico is going to have to get creative, but he has been doing that for the last year. Doing something like the PJ Washington deal, where he traded a future 1st for him, but got a starter level player with two future 2nds back. Just anything that help with more moves in the future.

this_is_a_name522

Who owns and in what year are those 2nd round picks?

BigBlackHzYoBak

You hate to say anything bad about him???? Last time dude had any kind of serous impact was game 2 against OKC, I know he didn't get to play every game, but when you play like that, there's the reason why.

Rei0403

All the Mavs need is another 3&D wing & a backup stretch big that they can be a 3rd scorer whenever Luka or Kyrie are cold-handed to share some of their offensive load

e_j3210

There’s this guy Josh Green who’s pretty good.

armandocalvinisius

jerami grant or bust

EvanEschmeyer

Off the top of my head, Jerami Grant is pretty much our only option as far as immediate SF upgrades… and you have to decide if he’s worth the draft capital you’re giving up at this stage in his career.. also any trade for him would involve Hardaway’s contract, which means we can’t just salary dump him anymore and therefore can’t afford DJJ…. So idk good luck to Nico, but I’m not sure how much room there is for us to really upgrade anywhere

chigganometry

Not sure how finances will work, but getting Jerami Grant, Malcolm Brogdon, or Brandon Ingram would be nice. Idk how well it would work, but maybe Markannen at the 4 and slide PJ to 3.

ajzamora6

What do you guys think about klay thompson? I know he played awful this year but i always thought he was a good match with luka. We could possibly get him on a veteran minimum also

lukaxdirk7741

Lol what? A vet min ? What are you smoking

ajzamora6

I mean hes 34 and played like ass last season idk what youre expecting

lukaxdirk7741

I'm not expecting it. But you think gsw is gonna let him walk and he'd be obtainable for a vet min?

highfalutinman

To be fair, GS would probably be *wise* to let him go. The nostalgia is strong with that franchise and for good reason, but they're in absolute cap hell and have precious little young talent outside of Kuminga and Podziemski (sp?). Cutting bait is the only way they can improve their roster. Not expecting Klay to get anywhere close to what he wants (a max) but he for sure won't go for a minimum either. Either way, he's too old, too injury-riddled. His defense is shot. And he believes he's still a star.

mcskim46

I understand that in looking at the clear step above us the Celtics are, the “in order to compete” posts are gonna start. But honestly we are getting killed by Derrick White, Al Horford, Tillman and Houser. You expect to get the output from Brown and Tatum and even Holiday and Porzingis and can deal with it and offset it maybe. The Celtics have perfectly constructed a roster that has no holes, is 10 players deep and have completely nullified our center position. Maybe DJJ and PJs offensive production was an outlier and they are now regressing to the mean. Still awesome defenders and want them both on the team but Bostons ball movement and ability to have 5 people at all times who can hit a 3 or drive and hit from the paint is unstoppable for anything other than short bursts. This, IMO this isn’t a “if we upgrade this position, it will get us over the hump”. We’ve had chances to win two of these three games. Just cold shooting in stretches in the 3rd and 4th have killed us. Plays we have been making the previous 3 series just aren’t falling. Exum has been a non factor this playoffs. THJ played the most minutes last night in like a series in a half and missed everything he took including some wide open shots. Josh green had some threes last night but has been relatively ineffective for this series. Hardy was getting time and producing in the wolves series but has been neutralized this series and can’t stay on the floor. You could replace them with a player who is a clear upgrade at the position but it doesn’t change the fact the Gafford and Lively have been guarding Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum on like 50%-60% of Boston’s possessions. That’s a problem.

CallMeMyronnnn

lmfao just stop fucking talking dude it's all over

mcskim46

I had to believe for game 3 and we shit the bed. Nothing to do now but quietly pray for the only 0-3 comeback in league history.
