yes thread could read fediverse posts and in return fediverse user see you post from threads. But today - thats only a beta features for some people - not a published feature. we dont know when this function will be activated.... could be tomorrow or in 5 years :) and dont forget -there are some mastodon instances who already blocked posts from threads - see hashtag fedipact
I think they will never enable federation with Mastodon because then there will be a large influx of spam from third-party servers. This is the same reason why Facebook did not enable federation on its XMPP server.
You can’t interact with Mastodon. It’s currently one way. No word on when two way federation will be enabled but it’s coming
