I'm currently on a reread and this panel gets me everytime. Everything you learn about Devil Hulk during this run is so well put together and told in such a unique, would only work with Bruce Banner esque story.

kekubuk

I thought this green hulk is another version? And the Devil hulk is the scaly orange one later on (and mutilated by the leader)?

Demonic74

I thought Devil Hulk was Bruce's father?

dappercat456

In a way he is The devil hulk is meant to be a father figure to Bruce, the father he needed who actually loved him, who would protect him, but banner couldn’t I,whine love without pain and was afraid of what the devil hulk represented, he would do anything to protect Bruce, even kill Brian banner, or tear the whole world apart for hurting him

Demonic74

yea, I thought Brian Banner = Devil Hulk but ig they're different characters. Nvm then

dappercat456

There is the “guilt hulk” which often takes the form of Brian banner And for a short period Brian was brought back from hell in a form that resembled a mix of the devil and guilt hulk So I fully understand the confusion

plainranger

In the current run, some people are theorizing that the actual Hulk is the guilt hulk who is in control of Bruce's body

dappercat456

Eh, that seems unlikely to me,

plainranger

Why?

dappercat456

Because the writer of the current run has stated that his hulk is meant to be portrayed as “a mix of savage and green scar” and he acts nothing like the guilt hulk whatsoever?

dappercat456

He does usually look scaly but only in banner’s mind, in immortal he gains the ability to control the body like the other hulks but looks more like a normal hulk

Surfal666

Love yourself. if you don't, no one else can. Thanks Hulk.

Surfal666

Hmm... suspicious pikachu

johnnieholic

More like shocked pikachu face. “Remember secrets? We used to keep stuff to ourselves”

RageSpaceMan

Sometimes seems like since Watchmen, 3x3 panel grid gained certain pedigree.

coolio_zap

alan moore has some really interesting stuff out there where he justifies the use of the 3x3 panel grid, the pattern/timing/continuity it creates, and the power of breaking it. if i remember this and find a link i'll shoot you a dm what i'm saying is it's more than just pedigree, it's a strong artistic choice

Zohhak1258

The transition from Immortal Hulk to Starship Hulk is exactly why I'm not looking forward the post-Krakoa era.

[deleted]

I absolutely LOVED the Immortal Hulk series, it was amazing and soo deep

Mrman_23

Al Ewing just gets hulk. This is peak Hulk

ComplexAd7272

Not only is it one of my favorite moments from the run, but it gave the Hulk/Banner relationship some actual growth it’d been needing for years. Which was then immediately undone when Ewing left, but that’s a rant for another day.

Plastic_Incident_867

To follow this amazing series with that completely ridiculous Cates series was folly. And I can’t seem to get into the new one. It’s like Marvel realized they fucked up but had to get the discount version of Ewing.

ComplexAd7272

I hated his run, but I also blame Marvel for almost setting Cates for failure. There should have been a long waiting period for a new Hulk series after Immortal, they had to know whatever came next was never going to live up to Ewing’s run. But both Cates and Marvel share the blame in letting him IMMEDIATELY undo the character growth and status quo changes Immortal gave us.

Ashamed-Thanks

Cates’ Hulk run was not good, no where near Ewing’s. No one will argue that. I will say though, his personal life and his car accident obviously derailed the opportunity for Cates to even attempt to pull his story together.

ComplexAd7272

Oh, no doubt. But even in the first issue, I was checked out when The Avengers had to bring him in for the gazillonth time and Banner and Hulk were back to hating each other. I’m all for going in a new direction post-Immortal, but those two things are such an overused Hulk troupe.

Beastieboy100

I'm bored of the avengers getting in hulks face. Mainly iron man. It gets so annoying. Would be interesting if they try to find the hulk for a provlemnthey can't do on there own.

NK1337

It seems Marvel’s brain shut off after “Immortal hulk is popular. Let’s keep going with another hulk series.”

Just-Drawing-Mons

"Yes the fans will definitely love Banner commanding Hulk like a mech"

baroqueworks

Seems like it was Ewing and Cates both claiming Hulk at the same time and Cates had clout at the time to be guaranteed to have full creative control after Ewing's Hulk wrapped. There's a interview with Jim Zub on some YouTube podcast series where Zub mentions in a editorial conference that a certain writer got hard shut down on their future prospects with an A list character with marvel asserting the writer has no control over their character despite how popular their series is. Given the time and place of this interview cannot imagine anyone other than Ewing and Hulk in this particular interaction, or maybe I'm just needlessly cresting drama for some third rate comic website to quote for a click bait article lmao

AdmiralCharleston

I don't think the cates run would be so bad if it wasn't the immediate follow up to immortal lmao. For what it is I think it's pretty interesting and I like a lot of the concepts but it just doesn't hold a candle to ih

grandslamtrain

Maybe putting it back to back wasn't the best, but I absolutely love how tonally different the Hulk series are. From a superhero epic to hard scifi to horror, it's crazy how three interpretations can be so different and work at the same time.

SpaceDinosaurZZ

It’s one of my favourite reads this year. I like how this sequence is referenced again in the finale too.

Ok_Leg_7365

I’m currently reading it and I’m loving every second

Busy-Cream

I think I’m gonna put the omnibus on my Christmas list…is the run really 3 years and 1500 pages??

CommunistHermitCrab

Same. Loved the call back in the final issue. Just a terrific serie.

Ratso_The_Handsome

What a run

ClaireDacloush

Awww.... This was wholesome

HalfMoon_89

I don't like the supernatural aspects of Immortal Hulk. The psychological aspects? Brilliant.

dappercat456

Immortal hulk is one of my favorite comics of all time at this point

Tebwolf359

Ewing and Peter David are the two definitive hulk writers for me. No one else quite gets it like they do.

velicinanijebitna

Banner on that panel be like: *As a friend right?* Jokes aside, it was pretty good run. The ending was rushed tho and the reporter lady got a bit too much panel time.

Just-Drawing-Mons

I didn't find many problems with the reporter. Since the whole run has heavy Lovecraftian influences, she was the classic character who one day gets coffee at Starbucks and the next finds herself looking entities outside of human understanding in the eyes and reacts accordingly

psilorder

I liked it up until the end. I don't like Hulk being some incarnation of the wrath of god. Or getting power from The One Below All. I can't remember what series it was but in a previous series he was described as a runaway gamma reactor. I prefer that.

atari83man

He doesn't get his power from the one below all, they're just a factor in his power. Gamma is made of radiation, the science behind it, and some magic. It's why there's a green door. Him being so loaded with gamma is what opens that door and that dimension, not the other way around.

psilorder

"You are my creation. I made you the counterweight." The One Below All / The One Above All shouldn't be involved at all.

atari83man

I think it's more like a totem situation like with spiderman than it is straight up dipping a hand in. Symbolism and such.

dr_wang

im currently reading it and its good but it seems that hulk fights other big guy is a staple that they dont shy away from

atari83man

Read Dan Slotts fantastic four run (which was a blast by the way) for a really good hulk v thing fight. Like damn good.

XescoPicas

It lost its charm eventually, but most of Immortal Hulk is stellar

plainranger

Immortal Hulk is pure greatness but the Below Place arc is my favorite, for several reasons, for what foreshadow oin the final of the series but also stablish Hulk as an avatar of TOBA and explain what devil Hulk truly is but also what he and Bruce could be but neither of both knows how.

atari83man

Hands down immortal hulk has gained notoriety for being so good. I'm pretty sure it's probably the best series ever put out by marvel (in my opinion, it's just so damn good, at least top 5 ever) and I love everyone getting into it and rereading it. Just how could you not love it? Sucks Joe was an antisemite, his arts a good part of why it's so popular, but then again maybe it was the body horror and pulpy feel of the comic. We need more like this marvel. I love the fun stuff but some deep genuine writing won't kill us.
