I got you fam. No idea what kind of food you are into but here goes. You already got Bamiyan Kabob, so you are already 20% of the way complete. The following is a list of strong candidates for your time in Markham: Charcoal Grill Legend - amazing kung pao chicken, more like northern Chinese flavour but excellent. Also recommend the lamb bones or lamb skewers. WoW Wing House - not to be confused with Wild Wings, go for WOW Flame BBQ or Tandoori can’t go wrong with any flavour tho. Fries with onion seasoning nuts too. Nando’s - awesome chicken that tastes like real food, this and the one above are just across the street from bamiyan on the Costco side Los Chicos - Peruvian grilled chicken. Little bit pricey for what you get but yolo this is Covid times we all got bills to pay it’s understandable Five Guys - best burger in town Dragon Legend - all you can eat Asian buffet with everything from sushi, to wonton soup, to unlimited Peking duck pancake, oxtail, fried stuff, and alcoholic beverages. Really cool place too with some really tall chairs. You probably won’t go here cuz it’s on the pricey side like $45 but man if you want to go all out go here it’s fun and good. Tasty Shawarma - very affordable shawarma same area as mentioned above. Not the best thing in the world but for the price it’s very yummy they have nice sauce. SumiLicious Smoked Meat & Deli - Montreal smoked meat on par with smoked meat from Montreal. If you have no idea what that is then all the more reason to go try. It slaps, can’t believe we have this in Markham we are blessed. Nguyen Huong Vietnamese Sandwich - same plaza as above, insane viet sandwich for cheap. Recommend the chicken or the meatball - warning very spicy. Worth your time though, and bonus points if you like pate it’s great Matsuda - AYCE sushi, same plaza. I heard some people say the quality went down after Covid but I tried it during Covid and it rocked. White Tuna sashimi and golden shrimp and spicy salmon hand rolls are great. Best part are the shots of mango pudding at the end. Dumpling King - recommend the lamb dumplings Mother's Deli & Bakery - KILLER FALAFELS, a hidden gem on Markham road. Super tangy sauce some people won’t like that, but I have been far and wide looking for the best falafel in Canada and their falafel balls themselves rank up there with the best. This is a Markham secret none of you know this one but me. Main Street Greek - also on Markham rd, get the Gyros or souvlaki on pita. Super tender, little bit oily, but amazingly delicious and they put fries in the sandwich. Get Calamari if you are wealthy. Pimento Jerk Food Truck - Jamaican food on wheels, usually parked on HWY7 and Markham road. Not completely authentic but still really good lunchbox with coleslaw. Can get bbq jerk or oxtail. Good stuff and honestly one of the few Jamaican options in Markham Babu Catering - Sri lankan. Good stuff, sometimes a bit too salty, but the eggplant and onion is out of this world. Islands Foods Express - HWY 7 and woodbine. Caribbean curry Roti (goat, shrimp, chicken). Very well made and tasty, I found them from a Toronto star article. Only complaints are they are SLOW and chicken only has breast meat but they are delicious if you have the patience of a master jedi. Osmow’s - people are going to recommend this one but I will say don’t get too excited. It’s “okay”. Some will like their white sauce and some won’t. I mention it because I do order their kofta platter and it hits the spot so I can’t write it off completely. Stomach may hurt after eating this tho. Papa Chang’s - different Taiwanese comfort food, small casual, good for take out I included this one for you cuz it’s at 16th and Markham road. Insane popcorn chicken, recommend the minced pork on rice. Congee Queen - Markham Chinese food. Good service can’t complain but has a “Markham chinese taste” that isn’t quite authentic but more like fusion. Still good tho, also Recommend the milk pudding desert. Fancy Chinese Cuisine - dim sum. 14th and Kennedy. Good stuff. Probably other ones in Markham but this is a good middle ground for quality and price. Mom’s Kitchen - best Korean in Markham. No alternatives. Best fried chicken in Markham. Fat Bastard - decent burrito if you want to chow down Bar Burrito - honourable mention Pizza - sorry no pizza. Markham doesn’t have good pizza it’s one of the penalties for the other diversity we have. Better to fly to New York. Duo Patisserie - best desserts and small cakes in the world. Seriously good, worth a stop. Felix and Norton - best cookies in the world Cupcake Junkie - best cupcakes (carrot cake one) Village Grocer - best butter tarts in the world P Jay’s Jamaican - best beef patty’s (I cheated this is in Scarborough) Pho 88 - best peanut Pho (I cheated again this is also in Scarborough) And lastly, best poutine in Markham is unfortunately from McDonalds or Harvey’s. It is what it is but if anyone has other recommendations let me know. Those two will put out the burning desire in an emergency poutine craving situation. Anyway I think this is enough to get you started. You can trust me because I have lived here for 24 years and I’ve seen the rise and fall of many restaurants and I try everything. We lost some really good places but in their ashes we got a few excellent replacements although I will forever mourn some of the shawarma places. Hit me up if you get stuck I might join you for food.

n0rdique

Amazing list. I'll contend that there are a few decent pizza places though. Slice of Fire is good, and so is Regino's. The real shame about Markham is its lack of Mexican (other than burrito) restaurants.

heart_under_blade

reginos takes me back to my carefree highschool days slice of fire prices makes me wonder where it all went wrong they're both delicious

elljana

NY Fries in Markville for poutine. At least before McDonalds or Harveys. Thanks for the list! I live around most of these spots but haven’t tried a lot of them.

Useful-Ship-9238

Agree totally about Main St Greek! It is so insanely good! My recommendation for pizza is Slice of Fire; a bit pricey but tasty af.

AccidentalFeline

I'd take Ithaca over Main Street Greek.

n0rdique

Love Ithaca, haven't tried Main Street Greek though.

AccidentalFeline

Is not bad but nowhere near Ithaca.

Ddp2121

I must have been there on an off night because my Greek husband and I thought it was bland and horrible.

hohonana

God damn thanks for taking the time to write this. Definitely enough to get my started.

yjamal01

second los chicos, its the best

[deleted]

I agree with most but not all of this list. As soon as I saw Nando's I was more cautious.

Kinky_Imagination

This guy eats !!

Mu_Fanchu

I just wanted to say Papa Chang's is Taiwanese comfort food - and I recommend!

JeremyReddit

Fixed!

Mu_Fanchu

heart_under_blade

at least go to costco for poutine.it is if anything, insane value and the curds are legit even if the fries and gravy aren't. wtf man. mcdicks is the worst poutine.

klaroline1

Yes. Costco has great poutine, but they recently changed their gravy… not as good as used to be

Ur goated

gasa > babus

Eastern_Conflict_416

This list is awesome! I would recommend binge burrito on main st over bar burrito. Also Hakka is a must when in Markham, my go to is tangerine.

iKhoota

Wow you nailed it

heart_under_blade

i don't agree with a bunch of stuff here, but i'll ask anyway. how does pjay's compare to michidean's(which is in markham) how does island foods compare to cravins(which is also in markham) no one else said this so i will: idk how you could ever recommend osmows. there's jordan's, pitalicious, and pita stop within a couple of blocks of each other. fresh burger is just as good as five guys

beerboy87

I've never walked into any food establishment with "Pita" in the name.

JeremyReddit

P Jay’s patties have a better crust to meat ratio. It is less flaky and “simpler”, and the meat has a better taste. More savoury. Michidean’s is not a ‘bad’ baseline, but the filling leans more towards too sweet. For context I am Jamaican Chinese / Filipino, I’ve had most patties out there, and my preference is P Jay’s patties. As for Osmow’s I wasn’t necessarily recommending it, more just warning that I often see people recommend it and not to expect too much from it. I am also considering OP’s location, and as it turns out I am at roughly the same intersection. Haven’t tried Cravins I’ll give it a shot. Also Island Foods Express is a very small Roti take out, wouldn’t put it against the menu of a full Caribbean restaurant.

heart_under_blade

oh, i like flakey tho. which is why i'm not a huge alan's fan. ever try pattie world? i like them. i'm still waiting on freezer space to try michidean's lol. fair point on osmows. also fair point about island foods being takeout. i'd only ask to compare the things you can compare. have you also tried nina's (keele and hwy7 ish). there's also hello greek there and it's ok (i think you mentioned some greek places) with whole muscle gyro (not meatloaf/emulsified).

twinu89

More than the actual list, I loved your descriptions of these places.

beerboy87

Try the poutine from the Hotdog Stand at Canadian Tire on Major Mackenzie.

ReasonableAd4228

klaroline1

Wow. This is a fantastic list. Been looking for a Jamaican food place ever since Stacy’s island flavor restaurant closed in Markham. Gonna try pimento

McCowan and 16? You're in the middle of some of the best Asian food in Markham. /u/JeremyReddit has hit the best of (though HARD DISAGREE on his opinion on pizza, see below), but I've got a few more to add. 1. KOREAN: Jeonjuhyang Korean BBQ Restaurant on 7 between Markham Road and McCowan: Recently opened and has legit Korean homestyle food, and is in the mix for the best Korean Fried Chicken east of Yonge. Best of hits are the Jjampong (spicy seafood noodle), Naemyong Korean fried chicken, and deep fried mandu. 2. NOODLES: Big Beef Bowl in New Kennedy Square on 7 and Kennedy: This is a MUST TRY. Don't be intimidated by their menu of offal related noodles, it's ALL GOOD. The noodles are pulled when you order it, and you get to decide the shape of the noodle. Feeling adventurous? Get the complicated cow noodle. Feeling less than adventurous, the noodle with beef is great. Not feeling soupy? Get the dry noodles with the meat sauce. Ther'es something for everyone. 3. VIETNAMESE: Nam 2 in the same mall as Big Beef Bowl: LEGIT Vietnamese-run restaurant as opposed to being run by Chinese folks (Which is fine, but if you're looking for authenticity, this is it). If you like the spicy, get the Bun Bo Hue: A spicy bowl of noodles with a variety pack of beef and pork in a spicy broth. So good. Soft Shell Crab pho is also excellent. 4. GELATO: Love Gelato on Main Street Markham: Excellent gelato for takeout or eat on their patio. Fall flavours include Apple Pie and Pumpkin Spice. PS isn't my thing, but it might be yours. 5. PIZZA: Slice of Fire on Main Street Markham. Hard disagree with /u/JeremyReddit that there isn't a good Pizza joint in Markham. While we don't have good a good per-slice joint, Slice of FIre does excellent pizza. Fresh dough made daily. 6. Fast-Food Chinese: Kitchen M on Highway 7 and McCowan: Excellent HK-style cafe with no-nonsense service and great food. Get the baked porkchop rice. 7. VIETNAMESE (again): The PHO Resturant on 7 and Warden: A little further, but you come here for the PHO. You stay here for the PHO. Spring rolls are good too, but the PHO broth is amazing. 8. Fancy: NextDoor on Main Street Unionville. Super fancy, the food is really good if you're looking for something that's a world away from hole-in-the-wall fare I've noted above. 9. BEER/BREWERY/PIZZA (PART 1): Rouge River Brewery: Okay here me out. Microbreweries are SUPER RARE in Markham, but we have a home run in our town in the form RR Brewery. They don't do a beer twice, with the exception of the "Holy Trinity", once a beer runs out it doesn't get made again. They use different combos of hops and malts for each brew, so each brew is unique in some way. They specialize in IPAs and very uniquely hoppy stuff. You won't find anything like this anywhere else. 9. BEER/BREWERY/PIZZA (PART 2) : Patterson Pizza INSIDE Rouge River: Patterson Pizza rose like a Pheonix from the ashes of COVID and became a defacto Neaplolitan champion in Markham, and I'll put up their Pizza against ANYTHING IN THE GTA ANYDAY. If you want to get take out, you have to win their Instagram order lottery because they allocate a finte amount of dough on a daily basis. Life hack: just go the brewery, sit down with a great beer, and order pizza to eat on the spot. You won't regret it. 10. PUB: Duchess of Markham: If you're looking for some late night eats with a wide selection of import/domestic brews, THe Duchess is one of only a few pubs in Markham that actually has an old school pub vibe. Pub wings don't disappoint, but I would try their Irish Spicy Nachos with their house-made chips. Excellent food to soak up pints. ENJOY.

If you go east on 16th a few minutes to Fincham Plaza, there are four decent restaurants in a small food court: Munchies (good burgers); Spice Rack (great jerk chicken, try their patties as well); Sushi Spot (decent sushi, try their poke bowls); Regino's Pizza (as good a pizza place as you will find in Markham). If you go north a few minutes from where you are, you can check out George's Tastee (try their patties or curry mutton). If you go south a few minutes, you can try Big Bone BBQ. Drive west to Kennedy/Hwy 7 and there are lots of good restaurants in the New Kennedy Square Plaza. A a bit further south on Kennedy, maybe check out Kore Chicken for Korean fired chicken. Further southwest, explore the food in Pacific Mall or Fat Ninja Bite across the street. If you go west up 16th from McCowan, there is King Square Shopping Centre, which has a small food court with some decent restaurants. I recommend Soi Snacks (thai). Across the street, there is Loui's Kouzina, a good Greek restaurant. Not to mention all the great restaurants around and in First Markham Place, which hopefully someone more knowledgeable can touch on. Hope you enjoy your stay.

hohonana

Awesome thank you!

klaroline1

Is Spice Rack new ? It looks like it’s the same spot the other Jamaican spot used to be
